Purpose – The purpose of this study is to develop a model that illustrated how influences are interpreted and then shaped by an economy into its commitment towards corporate social and environmental responsibility (CSER). Design/methodology/approach – The paper considers this question: is this possible to find some first and second effects about CSER in 24 sectors of Catalonian economy? Findings – The analytical model is used in order to develop a conceptual model to explain the forgotten effects or CSER in Catalonia, Spain. Originality/value – This paper applies the theory of the forgotten effects with the analysis of the causes or external elements to the Catalonian economy and of the effects or reflections that it produces in the sustainability. This paper presents a hydroinformatics management tool designed to optimize the program of measures (PoM) to achieve the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) objectives in the internal Catalonian watersheds. The tool incorporates the Qual2kw water quality model to simulate the effects of the PoM used to reduce pollution pressure on the hydrologic network. It includes a Multi- Objective Evolutionary Algorithm (MOEA) to identify efficient trade-offs between PoM cost and water quality. It also uses multi-criteria visualization and statistical analysis tools as a user-friendly interface. This management tool is based on the Pressure-Impact concept, selecting the most effective combinations of sewage treatment technologies from millions of technologically admissible combinations. Moreover, the tool is oriented to guide stakeholders and water managers in their decision-making processes. Some guidelines are also given in this paper on the use of analytical relationships from the field of evolutionary multi-criteria optimization algorithms for different parameters (elitism, crossover and mutation rate, population size) to ensure that the MOEA is competently designed to navigate the criteria space of the management problem. Additionally, this paper analyzes the results of applying the management tool in the Muga watershed, whereby guaranteeing its convergence within a reasonable computational time, in order to simplify the decision-making process. A new technology called METAPHOR, developed by the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC), has the potential to reduce the time to pregnancy in assisted reproduction. METAPHOR generates 3D images of embryos obtained through in vitro fertilization, allowing for a non-invasive visualization of the embryo's metabolism. In studies with mice, the technology was able to double the success rate in selecting viable embryos compared to traditional microscopy. The method is also accurate in analyzing oocyte metabolism, allowing for the selection of the most suitable oocytes for in vitro fertilization. The researchers are currently working on fine-tuning the technology for human embryos and plan to bring it to assisted reproduction clinics in the future. [Extracted from the article]

Water scarcity is a long-standing problem in Catalonia, as there are significant differences in the spatial and temporal distribution of water throughout the territory. There has consequently been a debate for many years about whether the solution to water scarcity must be considered in terms of efficiency or equity, the role that the public sector must play and the role that market-based instruments should play in water management. The aim of this paper is to analyse the advantages and disadvantages associated with different policy instruments, from both a supply and a demand viewpoint, which can be applied to water management in Catalonia. For this purpose, we use a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, in which we introduce an ecological sector that allows us to analyse the environmental and economic impact of the alternative policies simulated. The calibration of the exogenous variables of the CGE model is performed by using a social accounting matrix (SAM) for the Catalan economy with 2001 data. The results suggest that taking into account the principle of sustainability of the resource, the policy debate between supply and demand in water policies is obsolete and a new combination of policies is required to respect the different values associated with water. The illusion of carefree merrymaking is quickly dispelled when one observes knots of men on practically every corner with rifles strapped to their shoulders. Even some of the young men promenading with their sweethearts on the Rambla carry guns ready for instant action. It is true that if one judges by externals, the situation has all the earmarks of a proletarian revolution. Actually the probability of an uprising is remote. Spain is having its February, not its October revolution, and Catalonia must be considered in relation to the country as a whole.

This article presents the socio-economic conditions of Spain. The phenomenon of the seasonal worker is, indeed, very common in Spain. In Catalonia thousands and thousands of wretched men, women and children could be observed traveling by train to help in the grape harvest in France. FOR most Spaniards, life is a hard struggle. Apart from the phenomenon of seasonal labor, there is the equally common phenomenon of "moonlighting"-holding down two or more jobs in order to make ends meet. Increasing political and social awareness of the importance of protecting the geological heritage is compelling geoscientists to consider new methods for reconciling conservation and exploration of their research sites. Terrestrial Light Detection And Range (LiDAR) imaging is an accurate method of collecting 3D spatial data that has so far been under-utilized in the geological sciences. This aim of this paper is to assess the value of integrated LiDAR and photogrammetric imaging as a tool for synchronizing scientific exploration with conservation of geological heritage sites. Fumanya (Catalonia) is one of the most important Cretaceous tracksites in Europe, but the nature of exposure of the track-bearing surface has hindered quantitative documentation of the ichnites. Using integrated Light Detection And Range (LiDAR) imaging and photogrammetry it has been possible to construct high-resolution Digital Outcrop Models (DOM) of the tracksites. Photo-textured DOMs are a powerful visualization tool and function as fully 3D interactive databases that preserve information about the site that would otherwise be lost to erosion. LiDAR-derived DOMs have the potential to contribute profoundly to future geoconservation projects, particularly as a tool for documenting and monitoring heritage sites and promoting education and tourism.
