Although source-sink relationships in wheat are well studied, the performance of tillers as transient sinks is still unclear, especially under stress conditions. Thus, this work aimed to study the yield relationships of wheat stems in contrasting genotypes as affected by tiller treatment under stress conditions. Two experiments were conducted under greenhouse conditions using BRS Guamirim (high tillering) and BRS Parrudo (low tillering) wheat cultivars. Four tillering treatments were applied on late tillers in the first growing season (2016) and three in the second (2017): (i) free-tillering, (ii) detillering, (iii) physical suppression (only in the first season) and (iv) "spikes removal". The main stem and the first four emitted tillers were considered as primary tillers. Plants were submitted to drought (2016) and defoliation stress (2017) at preanthesis. Intraspecific competition among tillers increased under drought stress conditions and decreased the plant performance. Nonproductive late tillers do not improve the performance of primary tillers of wheat plants under drought stress, mainly in high-tillering cultivars. The reduction on the thousand grain weight of only 'Parrudo' detillered plants indicates that assimilate remobilization from late tillers to primary tillers and main stem seems to be more effective in low-tillering cultivars. The study of weed interference periods and the economic threshold level (ETL) of weeds on crops allows the adoption of management methods and the rationalized use of herbicides. The objective of this study was to determine the periods of interference and to test mathematical models to determine the economic threshold level of ryegrass in the wheat crop. Two experiments were carried out in a randomized block design with four replications. The first experiment was conducted in the 2014/2015 agricultural season. The periods of interference and control of ryegrass were studied in wheat. The periods of interference and/or control were: 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 120 days after emergence (DAE). The second experiment was conducted in the 2016/2017 agricultural season. The ETLs were studied, being the treatments composed of wheat cultivars and 12 populations of ryegrass, in competition with the respective cultivars. The results allowed concluding that the management methods of weed ryegrass must be adopted in the period between 11 and 21 days after crop emergence, which is described as a critical period of control of this weed. The wheat grain yield loss competing with ryegrass reached 59% when grown with ryegrass. For ETL, the linear regression model of the rectangular hyperbola adequately estimates grain yield losses in the presence of ryegrass. The cultivar presenting the lowest values of ETL, that is, less capacity to live with the weed, was TBIO Alvorada. The other cultivars presented similar ETL values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Karyotyping and chromosome complement knowledge are a prerequisite for cytogenetic mapping. The aim of this study was to characterize 1 common wheat cultivar (BH 1146) and 4 durum wheat genotypes (IAC 1003, Langdon, P19 and P33) from the breeding program of the Agronomic Institute of Campinas (IAC), using karyotype analysis together with Chromomycin A3/4'-6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (CMA/dAPI) banding techniques for longitudinal characterization of chromosomes and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) in the mapping of the 45S rdNA region. durum wheat chromosome complement number was 2n = 4x = 28 with the following karyotype formula: 22m + 6sm. Common wheat chromosome complement number was 2n = 6x = 42 with the following karyotype formula: 34m + 8sm. Tetraploid and hexaploid genomes presented 2 pairs of chromosomes with secondary constriction and terminal satellites. All 5 wheat genotypes exhibited CMA and dAPI bands and signals in the 45S rdNA regions (FISH-probe pTa71) which varied in number and location on the chromosome complement. All lines showed greater amount of dAPI bands than CMA bands. The FISH-rdNA 45S in situ hybridization signals, related to the nucleolar organizing regions (NORs), were observed in common wheat, presenting signals for the 45S rdNA sequence in 3 pairs of chromosomes. durum wheat presented signals in 2 pairs. The CMA bands coincided with the location of 45S rdNA region in the chromosomes of durum wheat. The techniques were efficient for chromosomal characterization of all 5 genotypes.
