Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to work out the magnetic forces on heat/mass transmission in a cavity filled with a nanofluid and wavy porous medium by applying the incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) method. Design/methodology/approach: The cavity is filled by a nanofluid and an undulating layer of a porous medium. The inserted two circular cylinders are rotated around the cavity's center by a uniform circular velocity. The outer circular cylinder has four gates, and it carries two different boundary conditions. The inner circular cylinder is carrying Th and Ch. The Lagrangian description of the dimensionless regulating equations is solved numerically by the ISPH method. Findings: The major outcomes of the completed numerical simulations illustrated the significance of the wavy porous layer in declining the nanofluid movements, temperature and concentration in a cavity. The nanofluid movements are declining by an increase in nanoparticle parameter and Hartmann number. The variations on the boundary conditions of an outer circular cylinder are changing the lineaments of heat/mass transfer in a cavity. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to simulate the thermo-solutal convection resulting from a circular cylinder hanging in a rod inside a ∧-shaped cavity. Design/methodology/approach: The two dimensional ∧-shaped cavity is filled by Al2O3-water nanofluid and saturated by three different levels of heterogeneous porous media. An incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) method is adopted to solve the governing equations of the present problem. The present simulations have been performed for the alteration of buoyancy ratio (−2≤N≤2) , radius of a circular cylinder (0.05≤Rc≤0.3) , a height of a rod (0.1≤Lh≤0.4) , Darcy parameter (10−3≤Da≤10−5) , Lewis number (1≤Le≤40) , solid volume fraction (0≤ϕ≤0.06) , porous levels (0≤η1=η2≤1.5) and various boundary-wall conditions. Findings: The performed numerical simulations indicated the importance of embedded shapes on the distributions of temperature, concentration and velocity fields inside ∧-shaped cavity. Increasing buoyancy ratio parameter enhances thermo-solutal convection and nanofluid velocity. Adiabatic conditions of the vertical-walls of ∧-shaped cavity augment the distributions of the temperature and concentration. Regardless the Darcy parameter, a homogeneous porous medium gives the lowest values of a nanofluid velocity. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present numerical simulations for magnetohydrodynamics natural convection of a nanofluid flow inside a cavity with an H-shaped obstacle based on combining artificial neural network (ANN) with the finite element method (FEM), and predict the heat transfer rate and system entropy. Design/methodology/approach: The enclosure is assumed to be inclined. Changing the inclination angle results in a different obstacle shape, which affects the buoyancy force. Hence, different configurations of the contours of the fluid flow, isotherms and the entropy of the system are obtained. The outer walls of the cavity as well as the central part of the obstacle are kept adiabatic. The left vertical portion of the hindrance is cooled, whereas the right vertical part of the obstacle is a heated wall. Using dimensionless variables allows obtaining a dimensionless version of the governing system of equations that is solved via the consistency FEM. The coupled problem of pressure and velocity is overcome via the Increment Pressure Correction Scheme, which is known for its accuracy and stability for similar simple problems. A numerical computation is performed across a broad range of the governing parameters. A total of 304 data sets were used in the development of an ANN model. That data set was conducted from the numerical simulations. The data set underwent optimization, with 70% sets used for training the model, 15% for validation and another 15% for the testing phase. The training of the network model used the Levenberg–Marquardt training algorithm. Findings: From the numerical simulations, it is concluded that the H-shaped obstacle boosts heat transfer rate in comparison with the I-shaped case. Also, raising the value of the inclination angle improves the entropy of the system presented by the Bejen number. Furthermore, strength heat transfer rate is obtained via decreasing the Hartmann number while this decrease decays the values of the Bejen number for both positive and negative amounts of the nonlinear Boussinesq parameter. Slower velocity and a better heat transfer rate characterize nanofluid compared with pure fluid. Leveraging the capabilities of the ANN, the developed model adeptly forecasts the values of both the average Nusselt and Bejen numbers with a high degree of accuracy. Originality/value: A novel fusion of FEM and ANN has been tailored to forecast the heat transfer rate and system entropy of MHD natural convective flow within an inclined cavity containing an H-shaped obstacle, amid various physical influences. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of gravitational modulation on natural convection in a square inclined porous cavity filled by a fluid containing copper nanoparticles. Design/methodology/approach: The present study uses a system of equations that couple hydrodynamics to heat transfer, representing the governing equations of fluid flow in a square domain. The Boussinesq–Darcy flow with Cu-water nanofluid is considered. The dimensionless partial differential equations are solved numerically using finite difference method based on alternating direction implicit scheme. The cavity is differentially heated by constant heat flux, while the top and bottom walls are insulated. The authors examined the effects of gravity amplitude (λ), vibration frequency (σ), tilt angle (α) and Rayleigh number (Ra) on flow and temperature. Findings: The numerical simulations, in the form of streamlines, isotherms, Nusselt number and maximum stream function for different values of amplitude, frequency, tilt angle and Rayleigh number, have revealed an oscillatory behavior in the development of flow and temperature under gravity modulation. An increase of amplitude from 0.5 to 1 intensifies the flow stream (from |ψmax| = 21.415 to |ψmax| = 25.262) and improves heat transfer (from Nu¯ = 17.592 to Nu¯ = 20.421). Low-frequency vibration below 50 has a significant impact on the flow and thermal distributions. However, once this threshold is exceeded, the flow weakens, leading to a gradual decrease in heat transfer rate. The inclination angle is an effective parameter for controlling the flow and temperature characteristics. Thus, transitioning the tilt angle from 30° to 60° can increase the flow velocity (from 22.283 to 23.288) while reducing the Nusselt number (from 16.603 to 13.874). Therefore, by manipulating the combination of vibration and inclination, it is founded that for a fixed frequency value of σ = 100 and for increased amplitude (from 0.5 to 1), the flow intensity at inclination of 60° is boosted, and an increase of the heat transfer rate at inclination of 30° is also observed. Convective thermal instabilities may arise depending on the different key factors. Purpose: Natural convection in finite enclosures is a common phenomenon in various thermal applications. To provide the thermal design guidelines, this study aims to numerically explore the potential of using internal baffles and nanofluids to either enhance or suppress heat transport in a vertical annulus. Furthermore, the annular-shaped enclosure is filled with aqueous-silver nanofluid and the effects of five distinct nanoparticle shapes are examined. In addition, the influence of baffle design parameters, including baffle position, thickness and length, is thoroughly analyzed. Design/methodology/approach: The finite difference method is used in conjunction with the alternating direction implicit and successive line over relaxation techniques to solve nonlinear and coupled partial differential equations. The single phase model is used for nanofluid which is considered as a homogeneous fluid with improved thermal properties. The independence tests are carried out for assessing the sufficiency of grid size and time step for obtaining results accurately. Findings: The baffle dimension parameters and nanoparticle shape exhibit significant impact on the convective flow and heat transfer characteristics, leading to the following results: sphere- and blade-shaped nanoparticles demonstrate around 30% enhancement in the heat transport capability compared with platelet-shaped nanoparticles, which exhibit the least. When considering the baffle design parameter, either a decrease in the baffle length and thickness or an increase in baffle height leads to an improvement in heat transport rate. Consequently, a threefold increase in baffle height yields a 40% improvement in thermal performance. Originality/value: Understanding the impact of nanoparticle shapes and baffle design parameters on flow and thermal behavior will enable engineers to provide valuable insight on thermal management and overall system efficiency. Therefore, the current work focuses on exploring buoyant nanofluid flow and thermal mechanism in a baffled annular-shaped enclosure. Specifically, an internal baffle that exhibits conductive heat transfer through it is considered, and the impact of baffle dimensions (thickness, length and position) on the fluid flow behavior and thermal characteristics is investigated. In addition, the current study also addresses the influence of five distinct nanoparticle shapes (e.g. spherical, cylindrical, platelet, blade and brick) on the flow and thermal behavior in the baffled annular geometry. Purpose: Nowadays, the most important challenge in mechanical engineering, power engineering and electronics is a development of effective cooling systems for heat-generating units. Taking into account this challenge, this study aims to deal with computational investigation of thermogravitational energy transport of pseudoplastic nanoliquid in an electronic chamber with a periodic thermally producing unit placed on the bottom heat-conducting wall of finite thickness under an influence of isothermal cooling from vertical side walls. Design/methodology/approach: The control equations formulated using the Boussinesq approach, Ostwald–de Waele power law and single-phase nanofluid model with experimentally based correlations of Guo et al. for nanofluid dynamic viscosity and Jang and Choi for nanofluid thermal conductivity have been worked out by the in-house computational procedure using the finite difference technique. The impact of the Rayleigh number, nanoadditives concentration, frequency of the periodic heat generation from the local element and thickness of the bottom solid substrate on nanoliquid circulation and energy transport has been studied. Findings: It has been found that a raise of the nanoadditives concentration intensifies the cooling of the heat-generating element, while a growth of the heat-generation frequency allows reducing the amplitude of the heater temperature. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to apply an incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) method to simulate the Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) free convection flow of a nanofluid in a porous cavity containing rotating hexagonal and two circular cylinders under the impacts of Soret and Dufour numbers. Design/methodology/approach: The inner shapes are rotating around a cavity center by a uniform circular motion at angular rate ω. An inner hexagonal shape has higher temperature Th and concentration Ch than the inner two circular cylinders in which the temperature is Tc and concentration is Cc. The performed numerical simulations are presented in terms of the streamlines, isotherms and isoconcentration as well as the profiles of average Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. Findings: The results indicated that the uniform motions of inner shapes are changing the characteristics of the fluid flow, temperature and concentration inside a cavity. An augmentation on a Hartman parameter slows down the flow speed and an inclination angle of a magnetic field raises the flow speed. A rise in the Soret number accompanied by a reduction in the Dufour number lead to a growth in the concentration distribution in a cavity. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to use an incompressible smoothed particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) method for simulating buoyancy ratio and magnetic field effects on double diffusive natural convection of a cooper-water nanofluid in a cavity. An open pipe is embedded inside the center of a cavity, and it is occupied by solid particles. Design/methodology/approach: The dimensionless governing equations in Lagrangian form were solved by ISPH method. Two different thermal conditions were considered for the solid particles. The actions of the solid particles were tracked inside a cavity. The effects of Hartman parameter, Rayleigh number, nanoparticles volume fraction and Lewis number on features of heat and mass transfer and flow field were tested. Findings: The results showed that the buoyancy ratio changes the directions of the solid particles diffusion in a cavity. The hot solid particles were raised upwards at aiding mode (N > 0) and downwards at an opposing mode (N < 0). A comparison is made with experimental and numerical simulation results, and it showed a well agreement. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study the natural convection and radiation heat transfer inside Nonagon inclined cavity with variable heated source length, which contains a porous medium saturated with nanofluid in the presence of uniform heat generation or absorption under the effect of uniform magnetic field with variable direction. The shape factor of nano particles is taking account for the model of nanofluid. Design/methodology/approach: This study is established in two-dimensional space. The 2D numerical study is effectuated with Comsol Multiphysics based on the on the finite element method. The 2D equation system is exposed on dimensionless form taking into account the boundary conditions. Findings: Results obtained show that the convection heat transfer is ameliorated with the augmentation of heated source length. The convection heat transfer is enhanced by increasing Rayleigh, Darcy numbers and the heated source length; however, it is reduced by rising Hartmann number. The presence of radiation parameter lead to improve the convection heat transfer in the presence of both uniform heat generation/absorption. The average Nusselt number reaches a maximum for an inclination of cavity γ = 45° and a minimum for γ = 60°. Both the increase of the shape factor of nano particles and the solid fraction of nano particles improve the convection heat transfer. Originality/value: Different studies have been realized to study the heat transfer inside cavity contains porous medium saturated with nanofluid under magnetic field effect. In this work, the Nonagon geometric of cavity studied has never been studied. In addition, the effect of radiation parameter with relation of the shape factor of nanoparticles in the presence of uniform heat generation/absorption on the heat transfer performance have never been investigated. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the unsteady magnetohydrodynamic mixed convective nanofluid flow by using Buongiorno two-phase model to achieve an appropriate mechanism to improve the efficiency of solar energy systems by mitigating the energy losses. Design/methodology/approach: The transport phenomena occurring in this physical problem are modelled using nonlinear partial differential equations and are non-dimensionalised by using non-similar transformations. The quasilinearisation technique is used to solve the resulting system with the help of a finite difference scheme. Findings: The study reveals that the effect of the applied transverse magnetic parameter is to increase the temperature profile and to reduce the wall heat transfer rate. The Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis parameters that characterise the nanofluids contribute to the reduction in wall heat transfer rate. The presence of nanoparticles in the fluid gives rise to critical values for the thermophoresis parameter describing the behaviour of the wall heat and mass transfer rates. Wall heating and cooling are analysed by considering the percentage increase or percentage decrease in the heat and mass transfer rates in the presence of nanoparticles in the fluid. Research limitations/implications: The investigation on wall cooling/heating leads to the analysis of control parameters applicable to the industrial design of thermal systems for energy storage, energy harvesting and cooling applications. Practical implications: The analysis of the control parameters is of practical value to the solar industry. Social implications: In countries, such as South Africa, daily power cuts are a reality. Any research into improving the quality of energy obtained from alternate sources is a national necessity. Originality/value: From the literature survey in the present study, it is found that no similar work has been reported in the open literature that analyses the time-dependent mixed convection flow along the exponentially stretching surface in the presence of the effects of a magnetic field, nanoparticles and non-similar solutions. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to present the surface roughness effects on mixed convection nanofluid flow with liquid hydrogen/liquid nitrogen diffusion. Design/methodology/approach: The small parameter (α) is considered along with the frequency parameter n to study the surface roughness. The non-similar transformations are used to reduce the dimensional non-linear partial differential equations into dimensionless form, and then, the resulting equations are solved with the help of Newton's Quasilinearization technique and the finite difference scheme. Findings: The impacts of several dimensionless parameters such as Brownian diffusion parameter (Nb), thermophoresis parameter (Nt), small parameter (α), etc., are analyzed over various profiles as well as gradients. Also, the investigation is carried out for in presence and absence of nanoparticles. The influence of surface roughness is sinusoidal in nature and is more significant near the origin in case of skin-friction coefficient. The addition of nanoparticles enhances the skin-friction coefficient and reduces the Nusselt number, while its effects are not noticeable in case of mass transfer rates. The presence of suction/blowing, respectively, enhances/decreases the Sherwood number pertaining to the liquid hydrogen. Practical implications: The results of the present analysis are expected to be useful for the design engineers of polymer industries in manufacturing good quality polymer sheets. Purpose Laminar natural convection of nanofluids in a square cooled cavity enclosing a heated horizontal cylinder is studied numerically. This paper aims to investigate in what measure the nanoparticle size and average volume fraction, the cavity width, the cylinder diameter and position, the average temperature of the nanofluid and the temperature difference imposed between the cylinder and the cavity walls, affects the basic heat and fluid flow features, as well as the thermal performance of the nanofluid relative to that of the base liquid.Design/methodology/approach The four-equation system of the mass, momentum and energy transfer governing equations has been solved using a computational code incorporating three empirical correlations for the evaluation of the effective thermal conductivity, the effective dynamic viscosity and the coefficient of thermophoretic diffusion, all based on a high number of experimental data available in the literature. The SIMPLE-C algorithm has been used to handle the pressure-velocity coupling. Simulations have been performed using Al2O3 + H2O, for different values of the average volume fraction of the suspended solid phase in the range 0-0.04, the diameter of the nanoparticles in the range 25-75 nm, the temperature difference imposed between the cylinder and the cavity walls in the range 5-20 K, the average nanofluid temperature in the range 300-330 K, the ratio between the cylinder diameter and the cavity width in the range 0.1-0.5 m, the ratio between the distance of the cylinder axis from the bottom wall and the cavity width in the range 0.2-0.8 and the ratio between the distance of the cylinder axis from the left sidewall and the cavity width in the range 0.2-0.5.Findings The main results obtained may be summarized as follows: the overall solid phase migration from hot to cold results in a cooperating solutal buoyancy force which tends to compensate the friction increase consequent to the viscosity growth due to the dispersion of the nanoparticles into the base fluid; the effect of the increased thermal conductivity consequent to the nanoparticle dispersion into the base fluid plays the major role in determining the heat transfer enhancement of the nanofluid, at least in the upper range of the investigated average temperatures; at high temperatures, the nanofluid heat transfer performance relative to that of the pure base liquid increases with increasing the average volume fraction of the suspended solid phase, whereas at low temperatures, it has a peak at an optimal particle loading; the relative heat transfer performance of the nanofluid increases notably with increasing the average temperature, and just moderately as the imposed temperature difference, the width of the cavity and the distance of the cylinder from the bottom of the cavity, are increased; the relative heat transfer performance of the nanofluid increases as the nanoparticle size, the cylinder diameter and the distance of the cylinder from the sidewall, are decreased; as a consequence of the local competition between the thermal and the solutal buoyancy forces, a periodic flow arises when the cylinder is located in the vicinity of one of the cooled walls of the enclosure.Originality/value Framed in this general background, a comprehensive numerical study on buoyancy-driven convection of alumina-water nanofluids inside a cooled square cavity containing a heated circular cylinder is executed by the way of a two-phase model based on the double-diffusive approach accounting for the effects of the Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis. Purpose – The purpose of this work is to study the mixed convection boundary layer flow past a vertical cylinder in a porous medium saturated with a nanofluid. Numerical results for friction factor, surface heat transfer rate and mass transfer rate have been presented for parametric variations of the buoyancy ratio parameter Nr, Brownian motion parameter Nb, thermophoresis parameter Nt and Lewis number Le. The dependency of the surface heat transfer rate (Nusselt number) and mass transfer rate on these parameters has been discussed. Design/methodology/approach – Solutions of the set of non-similarity equations are obtained by employing the implicit finite difference method together with Keller box elimination method. Findings – It was found that the heat transfer rate decreases and mass transfer rates increase as Lewis number increases. The heat and mass transfer rates increase as the buoyancy ration parameter increases. As the thermophoresis parameter Nt increases, the heat transfer rate decreases where as the mass transfer rate increases. As the Brownian parameter Nb increases, the heat transfer rate decreases. Brownian motion decelerates the flow in the nanofluid boundary layer. Brownian diffusion promotes heat conduction. The heat and mass transfer rates increase as the buoyancy ratio number Nr increases. The Brownian motion and thermophoresis of nanoparticles increases the effective thermal conductivity of the nanofluid. Both Brownian diffusion and thermophoresis give rise to cross diffusion terms that are similar to the familiar Soret and Dufour cross-diffusion terms that arise with a binary fluid. Research limitations/implications – The analysis is valid for steady, mixed convection two-dimensional boundary layer flow in a nanofluid-saturated Darcy porous medium. An extension to non-Darcy porous medium is left as a part of future study. Practical implications – The research is applicable for enhancing heat exchanger effectiveness by employing nanofluids.
