One in a series of booklets whose purpose is to stimulate greater interest in and more effective understanding of world affairs among American citizens, this six-chapter booklet traces the development toward improved relations between China and the United States. The chapters include: "Toward a New Consensus: 1978-1986"; "Strategic Triangle: The Impact of Sino-Soviet Relations"; "The Taiwan Issue"; "Economic Relations"; "China's Reform Process"; and "The Future of the Relationship." By now, it is very well understood and agreed by majority scholars of the world that the 21st Century Belongs to Asia. It is hailed as the Asian century in a way that this century marks the 'revival' and not the 'rise' of the original world superpowers. With the economies of US and Europe dwindling in pace, and the emerging economies like China and India increasing their momentum to take lead in future, the international attention has inevitably been focused on the critical understanding of these Asian Giants and the entailments it will have on future course of international relations. Currently, both the countries have embarked on a very similar state of affairs. China elected its new President in March 2013 and India is electing its Prime Minister and the new government in 2014. This paper tries to analyse why a significant leadership transition is the need of the hour for both the countries. It puts forward the important challenges that both the new governments will have to address tactically, in order to maintain the status quo of both countries as the future superpowers. The article announces the death of Prime Minister Chou Enlai of the People's Republic of China due to cancer. It states that his death was broadcast every half hour preceded by solemn music on radio stations all over China and appeared in newspapers throughout the world. It also states that flags at the U.S. consulate in Hong Kong, British Hong Kong Club and all the red banners in China flew at half-mast. It mentions he was instrumental in some major policy decisions in China until the last few months of his life while most of his responsibilities were delegated to First Vice Premier Teng Hsiao-ping.

In this article journalist Scotty Reston discusses views of Chinese Premier Chou En-Lai related to improved relations of China and the U.S. Chou asserts the transformed attitude of China towards the U.S. and expects a position for Peking, China in the United Nations. Chou declared that U.S. troops would be withdrawn from Viet Nam, Japan, and Thailand. It mentions the deep anxiety of Chou over a revival of Japanese militarism that would threaten both Korea and Taiwan.

Despite this rising assertiveness, China's grand strategy officially remains that of 'Peaceful Development.' In consequence, scholars have disagreed about the trajectory of China's grand strategy in light of its often ambivalent behavior. To explain this ambivalence, this article will take a closer empirical look at two important developments regarding China's international affairs: The softening on China's preoccupation with territorial integrity and sovereignty has been exhibited in taking sides with Russia in the Ukraine Crisis, as well as its continually increasing participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions. In contrast to more common materialist explanations, this article argues that the ambivalence of these actions can best be explained by contextualizing them with China's history and sense of legitimacy. It reports that Schlesinger was also invited for a continued visit in the Middle Kingdom after the death of the Chinese leader Mao Tse-tung and to meet three top persons in the post-Mao leadership in China during the last day of the tour. It notes that Defense Minister Yeh Chien-ying and Foreign Minister Ch'iao Kuan-hua have aired their contempt for the U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and the U.S.-Soviet Union detente. It adds that Chinese Premier Hua Kuo-feng argued that the Soviet government is still keeping its imperialist traditions.
