The article discusses two publications released by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), Creators in the Academic Library: Instruction and Outreach and Creators in the Academic Library: Collections and Spaces. It focuses on teaching creator research and enhancing students' understanding of their practice and emphasizes the role of academic libraries in creating collections, and communities for creators using academic literature technical standards and how-to manuals.

The article focuses on the donation of opera scores and orchestral sets from the New Zealand Opera Society to the National Library of New Zealand. The 350 vocal scores of 40 operas with orchestral performance materials for ten operas substantially increased the important music collection of the National Library. New Zealand Opera Society president Leslie Austin remarked on handing the donations to the National Library, stating that the Society was keen in making the collection more available and the best to way to make that happen is adding the opera scores and orchestral sets to the Cadence database of the National Library.

The University of Michigan (U-M) has announced that the University Library and the U-M Museum of Natural History have created a Web site featuring images and descriptions of thousands of specimens of fish, mammals, and fungi local to the Great Lakes region. The site draws material from the U-M Museum of Natural History, more than 16,000 digital images and 115,000 data records from the Fish and Mammal divisions of the university, and material from the Museum of Zoology and the Fungus Collections of the U-M Herbarium, made available electronically by the University Library. The databases list both scientific and common names and include records for specimens collected in the Great Lakes region from the 1850s to the present. Links among related records assist the user in navigating the collections.

The National Center for Education Statistics' biennial collection of statistical data from college and university libraries will open officially on November 22, 2004. Academic library directors received a letter containing a registration certificate in October, including a user identification and password to access the web-based forms. The interactive menus, available on the agency's web page will be available on March 22, 2005. As soon as possible after the end of the data collection period, 2004 data will be available in the Academic Libraries Peer Comparison Tools. Upon completion, a summary report of the 2004 data will be posted on the agency web site.

The University of Florida Libraries (UF), like many academic libraries, have been purchasing more e-books with each passing year. While most libraries that purchase e-books seemingly do so on very few platforms, the UF libraries currently have their collection of e-books available in over 35 different platforms. While this presents quite a challenge in terms of management it also presents an excellent opportunity for comparative analysis. Recent research focuses on the analysis of packages and the "big" deals, and highlights usage statistics but do not go into depth about the platforms and publishers. This article will compare Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) e-book platforms from both aggregators and publishers by examining features and usage statistics and making recommendations for consideration. The article focuses on the strategic partnership between libraries and archives to build the Unearthing Saint Augustine Colonial Heritage digital history collection at the University of Florida. Topics discussed are the significance and impact of the project in terms of the study of historic city of Saint Augustine, Florida, the steps for digitization, its system architecture, functionality and interface, georeferencing and dissemination of digitizes files, and project sustainability.

The article focuses on guidelines for library services at the U.S. colleges for undergraduate students, which have been approved by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). It states that libraries should have their own mission statements and goals. The author explores her creation of an electronic library (EL) to replace the one used by the faculty when the space is renovated at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire during the spring of 2013. Topics discussed include the extraction of content for the EL with the LibGuides computer software, the estimated viewing of 18,000 electronic books compared to 4,000 printed books from September 2012 to May 2013 and advantage of the 24/7 access to digital content for researchers.

This article highlights the Rare Books and Manuscripts Section program of the 124th Annual Conference of the American Library Association on June 23-29, 2005 in Chicago, Illinois. Some speakers discussed the issues, challenges, and responsibilities involved in collecting and managing treasured cultural materials. David Easterbrook of the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies at Northwestern University, described the library's efforts to make the collection available to everyone, regardless of affiliation.

This section presents an update on issues and events related to digital libraries in the U.S. as of October 2004. Swets Information Services announced that the ALPSP Learned Journals Collection (ALJC) in partnership with Swets has expanded for its second year and now offers a range of 430 titles from 44 diverse international publishers. The ALJC enables small- and medium-sized publishers to package their journals under a single umbrella license, pricing model, and delivery platform--offering libraries the benefit of a single negotiation. The University of Michigan announced that the Scholarly Publishing Office of the University of Michigan University Library has joined with Lightning Source Inc. to bring high-quality, hardbound reprints of 19th-century books to libraries and book-sellers using print-on-demand technology. The volumes are produced from digital images created through the university library's preservation reformatting program. GeoScience World announced that it is developing a comprehensive online resource for journals in the earth sciences.The GeoScience World portal will be developed and hosted by Stanford University's electronic journals service, HighWire Press.The initial collection will incorporate titles from 22 leading societies and institutes from six countries, including the seven founding organizations--American Association of Petroleum Geologists, American Geological Institute, Geological Society of America, Geological Society of London, Mineralogical Society of America, Society for Sedimentary Geology, and Society of Exploration Geophysicists.

This article reports that a consortium of libraries at five New York State independent colleges and universities have been awarded a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support development of a resource-sharing system for academic libraries throughout the state. The project, called the ConnectNY, allows the institutions to share library holdings, making the collections of all five readily available to students, faculty and staff.

Online educator and elearning consultant Patricia Delich narrates about the Yuba College library not having a platform to host her self-published ebook. Librarian and doctoral student Elena Heilman discusses using Drexel University's ebook resources through the Web-based discovery service Summon. The solution of placing a read-only PDF version of Delich's ebook on Yuba College's portal is explored.

The article reports on the participation of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill Library and School of Information and Library Science in the Open Content Alliance (OCA). OCA is a group of international organizations that are constructing a permanent archive of digitized text and multimedia materials on the Web. The school is the first from a university to join the alliance, and the library is the first library to contribute manuscript materials. And collections included in the archive are freely available for access and reuse.

Then-President Lee Eliot Berk led the creation of the book "Berklee: The First Fifty Years," by Ed Hazell in the effort to preserve Berkee's history. The nature and diversity of content and format of the materials in the archives reportedly make the task of creating an archive challenging.

The article details the process by which Smith College Libraries developed a multilevel information literacy program that is unique to individual majors. After initially lacking support for the creation of a information literacy program, librarians gradually developed relationships and liaisons with each department that would help increase program interest and ultimately the program itself. The article covers the benefits of faculty involvement in the creation of the program as well as the challenge of sustaining the program's workload.

As e-books emerge into the public consciousness, "open access" (a concept already familiar to scholarly publishers and academic libraries), will play an increasing role for all sorts of publishers and libraries. This chapter of The No Shelf Required Guide to E-book Purchasing discusses the meaning of open access in the context of e-books, the ways open access e-books can be supported, and the roles that open access e-books will play in libraries and in our society. Four student films about the importance of open access to research and data were voted the best during the fourth annual Sparky Awards. The University of Kansas (KU) has taken the lead in forming a coalition with 21 other universities to establish the Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions (COAPI).

The article describes the process of creating the Charles E. Bracker Orchid Photographs digital collection of Ball State University Libraries. The digital photographs were taken by Charles E. Bracker, a former botany and plant pathology professor at Purdue University who collected orchids with his wife Anri. Archivists, digital projects librarians, subject specialists and systems administrators participated in the project, which involved arranging, describing and making the photographs available online.

The article focuses on the use of podcasting by the Universal College of Learning (UCOL) tertiary library in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Producing some library instructional podcasts provided one opportunity to achieve the Library 2.0 goals of changing how our library made itself available to customers. They decided to make the podcast files available in the MP3 digital audio file format to ensure that file sizes were kept to a minimum and could be played on the widest variety of devices. There are a number of devices and software that can be used to record and edit podcast files simply and easily.
