This book contains a collection of 14 papers dealing with guidance and guidance programs in the Philippines, the Republic of China, Japan, and Thailand. An overview of the place of American counselors in international guidance and benefits to counselors and the counseling profession of world-wide contacts is reviewed in the initial paper. Issues facing the helping professions in Asian countries are discussed, including career counseling and manpower development and the role of public and private educational funding. Among the programs described are counselor training, vocational counseling, career information resources and testing programs in the Philipines, manpower development and junior high placement services in China, career guidance in Japanese senior high schools, and a guidance information-week fair in Thailand. A report from the South China University of Technology discusses a new method for on-site monitoring of foodborne pathogens using a smartphone-assisted paper-sensor combined with phage-derived bacterial-binding proteins-nano magnetic beads (PBPs-MBs). The PBPs-MBs were used for rapid separation and enrichment of targeted bacteria from food samples before detection on paper-based sensors. The paper-based sensor, loaded with a lytic agent, induced bacterial lysis and release of specific endogenous enzymes, resulting in characteristic color changes on the paper. A smartphone app was used for color analysis and direct detection of three foodborne pathogens. The research concludes that this smartphone-assisted biosensor has promising application potential for point-of-care testing of foodborne pathogens in resource-scarce areas. In the present paper, we review two of the most neglected intestinal food-borne trematodiases: echinostomiasis, caused by members of the family Echinostomatidae, and gastrodiscoidiasis produced by the amphistome Gastrodiscoides hominis. Both parasitic infections are important intestinal food-borne diseases. Humans become infected after ingestion of raw or insufficiently cooked molluscs, fish, crustaceans, amphibians or aquatic vegetables. Thus, eating habits are essential to determine the distribution of these parasitic diseases and, traditionally, they have been considered as minor diseases confined to low-income areas, mainly in Asia. However, this scenario is changing and the population at risk are currently expanding in relation to factors such as new eating habits in developed countries, growing international markets, improved transportation systems and demographic changes. These aspects determine the necessity of a better understanding of these parasitic diseases. Herein, we review the main features of human echinostomiasis and gastrodiscoidiasis in relation to their biology, epidemiology, immunology, clinical aspects, diagnosis and treatment. Researchers from Beijing Technology and Business University have conducted a study on the chemical components of Fu brick tea and its potential preventive effects on metabolic syndrome. Fu brick tea is a type of dark tea fermented by fungi and contains compounds that can relieve metabolic diseases, protect the liver, improve immunity, enhance antioxidant activity, and regulate intestinal flora. This journal issue contains a series of papers concerned with exploring the role that adult education can play in developing communities. The first paper, "Major Challenges and Prospect of Adult Education for the Year 2000" (T. M. Sakya), provides an overview of adult education in Asia and the Pacific, emphasizing the vastness of the region, the fact that 63 percent of the total world population live within it, and the rapid change that has characterized this region during the past decade. In the second paper, "The Role of Adult Education in Community Settings," W. M. K. Wijetunga points out that lifelong learning is not new to Asia and draws on his knowledge of Buddhism as an illustration of this fact. He emphasizes that adult education should always be focused on the disadvantaged members of societies with the aim of giving them the means to overcome their situation and gain equality. The remaining six papers were written by adult educators in countries of the region and outline the role that adult education is playing in each of these countries and what each hopes to achieve in the future. According to Mohamad Safri Shahul Hamid, deputy chief executive officer (CEO) at CIMB Islamic in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, it will be an opportunity to develop the sukuk market by bringing high quality foreign names for the issuance of the sterling-dominated sukuk.
