Reflective practice as a professional development strategy allows us to envision different work scenarios. One of those is known as Collective Reflective Practice, which permits participants to share their pedagogical experience and/or self-assess their own practice in a context of dialogue that sets the conditions for a reflective peer practice. This paper shows the results of an analysis of a collective reflective practice called «Hablemos docencia» (Let's Talk about Teaching). An initiative developed by the Universidad del Norte's Center for Teaching Excellence in Barranquilla, Colombia. In this space, professors from different disciplines have the opportunity to reflect on their teaching practices in a group and collaborative setting. Grounded in insights by Tsangaridou and O'Sullivan (1994), we use a quantitative methodology and ex post facto approach, which characterizes the effect of «Hablemos docencia» on a group of professors. In this paper, we first offer an analytic perspective on the papers in this volume, framing our discussion within the context of academic development as a discipline and highlighting common lines that cut across the nine contributions. We then offer insights about the current state of research on the evaluation of academic development and suggest directions that are likely to advance our theoretical and empirical knowledge in this area and anchor us firmly in evidence-based practice. We suggest that clarifying the mechanisms of change when professional learning occurs and measuring the changes in student learning outcomes that are associated with professional learning are important avenues for future research. This paper describes faculty perceptions of the impacts of a professional development (PD) programme for faculty called Interculturalising the curriculum. Over 70 faculty members have participated since 2008. Participants in the study represented four cohorts from 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013, from a broad range of academic disciplines. We begin with a review of the literature relevant to the rationale for, and challenges of, intercultural faculty development. We describe the theoretical frameworks and design of the programme. Next we present the results of a survey and one-on-one interviews with 20 past participants. The findings of the study combined with real changes in pedagogy and curriculum provide evidence that well-planned, theoretically grounded, intercultural PD for faculty can promote long-lasting impacts for both the educators and their students. This article views all educational approaches as either traditional (teacher-centered) or non-traditional (learner-centered), with not much emphasis placed on differentiating between the non-traditional models. The purpose of this paper is to describe the impediments to changing one's approach to teaching and some strategies to overcome those impediments. We will also focus our attention on those educators who seek to change from a traditional approach to a more non-traditional approach to teaching. The three main sources of resistance described are the students, the administration, and the individual attempting the change. Student ratings of teaching have received much attention in both higher and medical education research. Paramount has been the attention to the robustness of the instruments used to capture these ratings as a source of feedback for teachers. However evidence is scarce with regard to what happens after ratings are fed back to the teachers. This paper will focus on feedback facilitation strategies needed for medical teachers in the workplace setting to improve their teaching. First, the attributes of clinical teaching will be introduced, followed by a disquisition on feedback uptake, and finally reflection as a tool to improve teaching. This paper reviews two studies made about teachers' profiles and their beliefs concerning their own teaching in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile. These beliefs are interpreted as their subjective theories, which are assumed to be representative of the culture in the health science system and the dominant university systems. These beliefs influence their behavior and they are not often explicit. Using different techniques of data gathering, beliefs concerning teaching, teaching techniques, the reasons why these are chosen and the evaluation of what is learned are explored along with some ethical and social aspects of teaching. These two studies look for elements to improve faculty development programs. It has been observed that beliefs related to practical, non-reflective thinking are predominant. It is suggested to reinforce faculty development programs to stimulate analytic and reflexive thinking as well as to improve the values in student-teacher relationships that might be based on reflection on the practice. It is concluded that teacher-training courses have influenced those who took them and they are contaminated by the scientific paradigm of health sciences professions. Limitations in those who have taken the courses have been observed. However, these limitations are of a lesser degree than in those who have not taken the training courses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
