Ensuring that the behavioral health workforce keeps pace with rapid research advances, pharmaceutical developments, shifts in managed care and changing treatment protocols ranks among the field's most urgent challenges. Few would dispute that the gap between what the nation's up-and coming counselors, psychiatrists, nurses and psychologists are taught and what they encounter in the real world of practice is huge. Enter a group that is making determined strides in closing that gap the Annapolis Coalition on "Behavioral Health Workforce Education." It's mission is to promote consensus on the nature of the workforce crisis and to promote improvements in the quality and relevance of education and training by identifying and implementing change strategies.

The article reports that a University of Illinois researcher has concluded that students who completed AlcoholEdu, an online prevention program, reported 50 percent fewer health, social and academic consequences from drinking. In addition, a National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism-sponsored study on the interactive alcohol prevention program myStudentBody also revealed positive results on its effectiveness. Many education-based solutions to the college drinking problem have been tried, but there has been little rigorous, multi-institutional research on their effectiveness.

This paper explores recent research trends in human osteology, based on articles published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology (AJPA) during two 5-year intervals: 1980--1984 and 1996--2000. Topical "visibility" is measured in terms of article counts; "impact" is estimated through citation indices. Our results indicate that human osteologists continue to publish a range of methodological, analytical, and descriptive research papers that address a broad array of subjects. Analytical articles are cited more frequently than descriptive articles and thus have higher impact, reflecting the discipline's continued commitment to problem-oriented research. Differences in publication patterns exist between scholars during early and later stages of their careers. Articles published by students and Ph.D.s within 2 years of their doctoral degree are more frequently descriptive than analytical, when compared to people with longer career histories. Topics such as pathology, forensic anthropology, and biodistance modeling remain highly visible, while articles on the dentition have waned. An increase in functional research directed toward the postcranial skeleton is also reflected in our data. While continued visibility for morphological investigations is apparent, the impact of recently developed applications in bone chemistry and molecular anthropology is amply documented in our data, particularly during the more recent survey years., ((c) 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

The article discusses the findings of a study on student engagement conducted among 133,000 students at 257 two-year colleges. According to the study, remedial students exert more effort than students in regular classes. The findings also revealed that 27 percent of remedial students often or very often consult with an instructor or advisor about their career plans as compared to 21 percent for regular students. Open access to publications through electronic journals has dramatically expanded downloading and use of this literature and spurred the rise of alternative metrics to assess article impact. Open access publications have been shown to gain more citations than articles with restricted access, and seven of the 10 most popular articles in 2012 were free public access with the most response, as documented through altmetrics, coming from non-scientists. Altmetrics also enables post-publication filtering and peer review in a nearly immediate timeframe for very large open access journals. Online activity measured through altmetrics highlights attention to the article on its own, less dependent on the validation of a journal name. The field of altmetrics is young, still limited to certain open websites, but with potential for considerable expansion, development and application. At ASIS&T’s RDAP13 Summit, one panel explored the shared interests and challenges faced by researchers, institutions, various repositories, publishers and the public. Common hurdles include engaging researchers in the process at the outset, organizing and documenting research data, contending with diverse media types and file formats, spanning disciplines and rewarding participation. Amy Nurnberger of Columbia University Library noted the importance of understanding authors’ needs and recognizing comparable issues faced by libraries and publishers. Jared Lyle of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research stressed the value of working with researchers early in their process and establishing a personal, supportive and consultative connection. John Kunze described tools available through the California Digital Library to facilitate data curation at several stages of the research process, ultimately depositing data to a repository and enabling its publication and sharing. The collective experiences highlighted common themes, including the value of local collections and partnerships as well as the need to simplify the process with easy-to-use tools. Methods for determining research quality have long been debated but with little lasting agreement on standards, leading to the emergence of alternative metrics. Altmetrics are a useful supplement to traditional citation metrics, reflecting a variety of measurement points that give different perspectives on how a dataset is used and by whom. A positive development is the integration of a number of research datasets into the ISI Data Citation Index, making datasets searchable and linking them to published articles. Yet access to data resources and tracking the resulting altmetrics depend on specific qualities of the datasets and the systems where they are archived. Though research on altmetrics use is growing, the lack of standardization across datasets and system architecture undermines its generalizability. The United Kingdom’s Digital Curation Centre (DCC), established in 2004, is the country’s digital preservation and data management authority. From 2011 to mid-2013 the DCC’s Institutional Engagement program provided support for digital preservation and data management to 20 universities. The initiative was stimulated by the realization that research data leads to broader advances when shared, as well as by pressure from funders to implement formal data management practices. Experience with the first cohort of universities revealed differences in readiness for data management, the importance of a local champion and support staff and the need for dedicated funding. Unfamiliar but necessary working relationships emerged, as did the need to align institution requirements with funder priorities. Common challenges were planning for effective data management, data storage and training for researchers and staff. The DCC will apply the lessons learned with the first cohort to other higher educational institutions, adjusting its approach to serve each university’s specific needs while promoting the shared purpose. Knowledge organization systems (KOS) for government information facilitate access, management and dissemination of information produced with government funding. Supported by taxpayers, the information product is a public good with potential impact on the economy, and ready access to it extends its value. Determining the economic value of KOS in the government setting is complicated by the idea of return on investment, given the drive for free and open public access and difficulty identifying a presumed economic benefit and beneficiaries. Intellectual property use and technology transfer based on government information fuel industries and economic markets, demonstrating the value of the information, while the systems for organizing that information promote easy access and rapid dissemination. KOS are critical tools that expand paths to government information, opening a broader range of topics for wider audiences, providing semantic resources to enrich information and promote discovery and machine readable metadata to support automated processes and interoperability. The author reflects on the availability of big data and how it is shaping the research profession. He argues that big data and predictive analytics are more than a hype due to the existence of the technology to mine and analyze such data sets which are abundant and easily accessible. He believes that given the new tools for big data, there is a need for the researcher to change skillsets that is fitting of a data scientist.

A February 2013 government mandate directed federal departments and agencies to develop plans to promote access to the publications and data generated from federally funded scientific research. Panelists representing the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Studies and the National Institutes of Health Office of Extramural Research shared updates on their agencies' progress. While each agency has more or less stringent policies in place for preserving data and making it accessible, the mandate expands their application without additional resources or guidance on writing or evaluating data management plans. The agencies represented will make efforts to minimize the burden on researchers, but audience members questioned who will handle the data management. Eight brief talks at RDAP 2014 gave an intriguing introduction to a variety of projects in data curation. EarthCube, an effort to build a cyberinfrastructure to manage and share data in the geosciences, and GlueX, a massive scale data management project, both face the challenge of building strong collaborations of diverse stakeholders to direct project development. Training and implementation are the focus for an intense team effort by Stanford University librarians to handle a repository backlog as well as for the University of Cincinnati's training for trainers to help researchers adopt good data management practices. Establishing a deposit workflow and creating and assigning consistent metadata are key to linking reports for Purdue University's Joint Transportation Research Program and to coordinating the National Snow and Ice Data Center's multiple databases. Data management and preservation extends to data related to the process as well as the end product in game design at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Speakers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign discussed the disheartening finding that the National Science Foundation's funding for research proposals did not correlate with their having data management plans. EDITOR'S SUMMARY Discouraged by researchers' low response to informational offerings on data sharing, librarians at the University of Rochester's River Campus Libraries refined their outreach strategies. To understand the support that faculty members may need, they checked the data sharing policies of journals that faculty members publish in and the level of compliance. A review of journal policies and evidence of data sharing showed both requirements and compliance varied widely. The university librarians plan to offer workshops specifically on data sharing requirements for PLOS One, the journal researchers published in most in 2014. Researchers with strong data sharing practices will be encouraged to mentor colleagues. Ongoing compliance assessment will point out where further library support may be effective. EDITOR'S SUMMARY The 2015 RDAP Summit hosted a panel discussion to address issues and challenges of curating students' research data and digital scholarship, bringing together librarians dealing with various aspects of digital curation and management. Few institutions have a policy on handling student research data, theses and dissertations. Obstacles include insufficient know-how, time, incentive and resources. Without guidance, data files vary widely in format and quality. Yet, as one panelist pointed out, without definitive standards, data librarians must contend with a messy reality and should be reasonable in their expectations for students. Planning for improvements must start by engaging students and advisors throughout the process of data creation. EDITOR'S SUMMARY A hastily arranged session was convened at the 2015 RDAP Summit in response to the 2013 memo from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) on research data policy and management. On the first day of the conference, planners solicited input on ways attendees are educating their communities on OSTP data policy requirements, resources developed and emerging issues and challenges in data management. Attendees voted to learn more about the University of Iowa's creation of a Research Data Interest Group, the National Institute of Standards and Technology's taxonomy of research data and archiving requirements and James Madison University's efforts to inform stakeholders on the OSTP mandate. At a short session the next morning, speakers from these institutions expanded on their first brief responses, sparking further questions and plans to carry on the conversation through social media and future meetings. EDITOR'S SUMMARY The journey of the University of Zadar's Department of Information Sciences to iSchool recognition reflects the challenging requirements for an academic institution to attain that status. The department was accredited in 2014, with undergraduate and graduate programs evolving from the Department of Librarianship, accredited since 2005. The department co-publishes a scientific journal, organizes professional conferences, operates a joint graduate program with other universities, promotes active involvement in international professional organizations and encourages collaboration with universities around the world to promote student exchange studies. Admission requirements, curricula and professional competencies follow recommendations for all levels of study, with special focus at the doctoral level on supporting Croatia's written heritage. Having demonstrated institutional dedication to the field of information sciences and support of robust academic study, the department's sole remaining obstacle for full recognition as an iSchool is stable research funding. EDITOR'S SUMMARY The University of Colorado-Boulder expanded its digital services through the 2016 opening of its Center for Research Data and Digital Scholarship (CRDDS), a collaboration between the libraries and research computing. The aim is to provide a full range of data services, from analytics and visualization through curation, storage and preservation, in addition to education and consultation for both university and community members. Increased data discovery, reuse, access and publication are expected to be among the several advantages to this collaborative effort. The CRDDS will focus on promoting research data management mandated by federal funding agencies and journal publishers, cyberinfrastructure to gain full benefit from big data, education and training through courses and online modules, and digital scholarship to explore tools and methods used throughout the life cycle of a digital project. EDITOR'S SUMMARY Scholarly research is at the forefront of innovation, especially with a breadth of new technologies that can enhance the research process. However, in a race for scholars to produce more and more new findings, documentation practices and reproduction of results may be neglected. Lack of validation through reproduction can lead to a general distrust of scholarly research and experiments, but a more generous approach to information sharing could be the answer to this issue. Scholars have connected socially for centuries to share their ideas, and this practice has led to some truly innovative ideas that have shaped our world today. With willing participants sharing their ideas and their research methods, new findings can be reproduced and validated, creating a stronger and more trustworthy community of scholars. EDITOR'S SUMMARY The voice of the performing arts is an important - though seldom heard - disciplinary component of information science research. The Open Symphony, a collaboration between a performing musician and computer science students, allowed for creative audience interaction with live music performances. But such interdisciplinary collaboration is difficult and needs to be put within the larger context of questions surrounding value, individual contribution in artistic expression and ownership in the performing arts. Indeed, tensions around the economics of art and commercial versus academic value may hinder collaborations between artists and academia, but with the right framework and definitions of value these efforts could lead to additional forms of cross-disciplinary exploration.
