The article draws attention to an issue that has been well discussed in historiography – the abolition of Jewish self-government in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Based on the re-interpretation of known sources and the introduction of new historical materials several questions are raised. Is everything so obvious in respect of the liquidation of the Va'ads? Nineteenth-century Swedish-Jewish history has sometimes been classified as a peripheral adjunct to German-Jewish history. This article discusses the boundaries set up by Swedish-Jewish emancipationists in their struggle to be defined and accepted as Swedes. By defining themselves as Swedes and using the Swedish language, Swedish-Jewish emancipationists distanced themselves from the German language, while at the same time maintaining good relations with German-Jewish communities. Distancing themselves from so-called Ostjuden, but also helping them through poor-relief and other expenditure, is also discussed in relation to how Swedish-Jewish emancipationists defined themselves as belonging to the Swedish nation, and not a 'Jewish nation'. Around 1920 Chicago had emerged as one of the largest centers of Jewish life in the world. However, this is a little-known fact. Jews do not feature prominently in Chicago's history and memory, even though they constituted close to 10% of the city's population during the first half of the 20th century. The article raises the question why and how Jews became insiders in a city of outsiders, with a focus on the economic and political spheres. Moritz Lazarus, the first professor for psychology, is known for his Völkerpsychologie (psychology of peoples). However, his archive at the National Library of Israel contains surprisingly many texts on individual psychology, a part of his oeuvre which is still mostly unknown. In this study, digital analysis methods (image embedding and topic modeling) are used to gain a first insight into his archive and his psychology. The marginality of Irish Jews within both Irish and Jewish worlds and their consequent lack of interest to scholars, has meant that the traditional narratives of Irish Jewish history have only begun to be interrogated relatively recently. This paper demonstrates how new approaches, informed by ongoing developments in Jewish Studies, can revolutionise our understanding of key aspects of Irish Jewish history such as migration to and settlement in Ireland. Previous research asserted the contribution of Black-Jewish relations to American culture as a product of the intrinsic connection obtains between Judaism and liberalism. Catastrophic imagery is pervasive today in part as a reaction to increasingly dire predictions of global environmental crises. Some have suggested that the novelty of anthropogenic change signals entrance into a new geologic epoch, the Anthropocene. In a parallel global debate over nuclear weapons, EP Thompson argued that the logic of deterrence represented the final stage of civilization, or "exterminism." This effort explores key issues that this new geologic history presents, in particular the loss of historical sensibility, through the lens of Thompson's concept of nuclear exterminism. Introducing the critical response of Mike Davis, I explore how post-colonial history, and in particular, Dipesh Chakrabarty's concept of simultaneity can encourage a more productive and historical engagement with the Anthropocene. This is to avoid the pitfalls of a cognate "climate exterminism," which cedes agency to natural disasters and flattens the uneven responsibilities for Earth System change into a homogenizing category of "the species." This article argues that Jewish migration from Eastern Europe to the New World has long been viewed through the lens of a specific historical narrative that revolves around and reinforces key themes such as anti-Jewish prejudice and violence in Eastern Europe, Jewish flight to Western countries, and the successful integration of Jewish immigrants into new societies. While this interpretation of Jewish migration as a story of crisis and redemption was central to key works on Jewish migration to the United States, Israel and other countries, recent academic studies have critiqued such renditions of Jewish migration as a historical drama of persecution, flight and rescue. Despite these interventions, central scholarly works and dominant communal accounts continue to frame and explain Jewish migration through the traditional historiographical paradigm. The continued salience of this particular interpretation of Jewish migration history raises several fascinating questions regarding the connection between academic scholarship and communal interests as well as larger issues related to the tension between history and memory, past and present, Jewish history and general history. The article concludes with a discussion surrounding the possible origins of these tensions as well as potential strategies for resolving these and related questions regarding the study of Jewish migration, in particular, and modern Jewish society, in general.
