This study aimed to investigate the effects of tanniniferous Acacia karroo leaf meal inclusion level on performance of goats fed on a Setaria verticillata grass hay-based diet. Twenty indigenous male Pedi goats with an average initial live weight of 17.44 ± 2 kg were allocated, in a completely randomized design, to five dietary treatments containing Acacia karroo leaf meal inclusion levels of 20%, 25%, 30%, 40% and 50% of the total diet. Daily dry matter intakes were similar (P > .05) across the treatments. Acacia karroo leaf meal inclusion improved (P < .05) dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, neutral detergent fibre and acid detergent fibre digestibility coefficients. Dietary treatments had no effect on final live weights of goats. However, live weight gains were higher (P < .05) in goats fed a diet containing 50% Acacia karroo leaf meal inclusion level. Dry matter, crude protein and neutral detergent fibre digestibility coefficients were optimized at Acacia karroo leaf meal inclusion levels of 69.4%, 48.3% and 42.7%, respectively. Acacia karroo leaf meal inclusion improved nutrient digestibility and live weight gain of the goats and thus has potential to be utilized as a protein supplement when low-quality roughage is used as a basal diet. In 2014, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) published 13 Core Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) that graduating students should be able to perform with indirect supervision when entering residency. A ten-school multi-year pilot was commissioned to test feasibility of implementing training and assessment of the AAMC's 13 Core EPAs. In 2020-21, a case study was employed to describe pilot schools' implementation experiences. Teams from nine of ten schools were interviewed to identify means and contexts of implementing EPAs and lessons learned. Audiotapes were transcribed then coded by investigators using conventional content analysis and a constant comparative method. Coded passages were organized in a database and analyzed for themes. Consensus among school teams regarding facilitators of EPA implementation included team commitment to piloting EPAs; agreement that: proximal EPA adoption with curriculum reform facilitates EPA implementation; EPAs 'naturally fit' in clerkships and provided opportunity for schools to reflect on and adjust curricula and assessments; and inter-school collaboration bolstered individual school progress. Schools did not make high-stakes decisions about student progress (e.g., promotion, graduation), yet EPA assessment results complemented other forms of assessment in providing students with robust formative feedback about their progress. Teams had varied perceptions of school capability to implement an EPA framework, influenced by various levels of dean involvement, willingness, and capability of schools to invest in data systems and provide other resources, strategic deployment of EPAs and assessments, and faculty buy-in. These factors affected varied pace of implementation. Teams agreed on the worthiness of piloting the Core EPAs, but substantial work is still needed to fully employ an EPA framework at the scale of entire classes of students with enough assessments per EPA and with required data validity/reliability. The Scottish verdict of not proven represents a second acquittal verdict which is not legally defined. Existing research into the influence of the not proven verdict on jury decision making is modest. The main aim of the current study was therefore to investigate the influence of verdict systems (two vs three) on juror decision making. The effect of pre-trial bias and evidence anchors on juror judgements were also examined. One-hundred and twenty-eight mock jurors listened to two homicide vignettes and were asked to rate their belief of guilt of the accused and to give a verdict in both trials. The results suggest that pre-trial bias was a significant predictor of both verdict choice and belief of guilt, whereas evidence anchors were not a significant predictor of either. Finally, both guilty and not guilty verdicts were given with increased frequency in the two-verdict system when compared to the three-verdict system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new thermophoretic precipitator (TP) has been designed and used for the collection of nanosized aerosol particles. NaCl and Fe particles, with mean diameters of 55 nm and 3.6 nm, respectively, were used to determine the thermophoretic deposition efficiency as well as the uniformity of the deposition. When the average temperature gradients applied were 2200 K/cm and 2400 K/cm, a high thermophoretic deposition efficiency, close to 100%, was attained at aerosol flow rates below 15 sccm. A gradual decay in the efficiency was observed as the flow rate was increased. Theoretical calculations of particle deposition efficiency were in good agreement with experimental data. The deposition along the TP was shown to be homogenous on a millimeter scale for both NaCl and Fe particles collected on thin foil substrates and microscope grids, respectively. Finally, the thermophoretic precipitator was used to efficiently deposit Fe nanoparticles on a substrate for the subsequent growth of carbon nanotubes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Genome structure and gene expression depend on a multitude of chromatin-binding proteins. The binding properties of these proteins to native chromatin in intact cells are largely unknown. Here, we describe an approach based on combined in vivo photobleaching microscopy and kinetic modeling to analyze globally the dynamics of binding of chromatin-associated proteins in living cells. We have quantitatively determined basic biophysical properties, such as off rate constants, residence time, and bound fraction, of a wide range of chromatin proteins of diverse functions in vivo. We demonstrate that most chromatin proteins have a high turnover on chromatin with a residence time on the order of seconds, that the major fraction of each protein is bound to chromatin at steady state, and that transient binding is a common property of chromatin-associated proteins. Our results indicate that chromatin-binding proteins find their binding sites by three-dimensional scanning of the genome space and our data are consistent with a model in which chromatin-associated proteins form dynamic interaction networks in vivo. The release of mitochondrial proapoptotic proteins into the cytosol is the key event in apoptosis signaling, leading to the activation of caspases. Once in the cytosol, cytochrome c triggers the formation of a caspase-activating protein complex called the apoptosome, whereas Smac/Diablo and Omi/htra2 antagonize the caspase inhibitory effect of inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs). Here, we identify diarylurea compounds as effective inhibitors of the cytochrome c-induced formation of the active, approximately 700-kDa apoptosome complex and caspase activation. Using diarylureas to inhibit the formation of the apoptosome complex, we demonstrated that cytochrome c, rather than IAP antagonists, is the major mitochondrial caspase activation factor in tumor cells treated with tumor necrosis factor. Thus, we have identified a novel class of compounds that inhibits apoptosis by blocking the activation of the initiator caspase 9 by directly inhibiting the formation of the apoptosome complex. This mechanism of action is different from that employed by the widely used tetrapeptide inhibitors of caspases or known endogenous apoptosis inhibitors, such as Bcl-2 and IAPs. Crystalline nanometer-sized Cu[sub 2]O and CuO particle formation was studied by vapor thermal decomposition of copper (II) acetylacetonate in a vertical laminar flow reactor at ambient pressure. Experiments were carried out at 3 furnace temperature profiles (maximum values of t[sub furn] = 432, 596, 705°C) and with 2 carrier gases (oxygen/nitrogen with mixture ratios of 0.5/99.5 and 10.0/90.0). The results of computational fluid dynamics simulations are presented. The introduction of oxygen into the system was found to increase the decomposition rate and removed impurities from particles. The size of produced primary particles varied from 10 to 200 nm. Particle crystallinity was found to depend on both the oxygen concentration and the furnace temperature. A model taking into account the detailed chemical reaction mechanisms during the particle formation is proposed. The model allows one to build a dynamic phase diagram of the condensed products formed during the decomposition and is in good agreement with the experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
