Flame-retarded polymers, such as polyester textiles and sheets, are attracting attention with regard to their sustainability. Mechanical recycling is currently the most frequently used technique for improving the circularity of plastics. However, one complication of mechanical recycling is associated with the (still) inevitable mixtures of polymers and additives, which can influence material stability and significantly deteriorate the mechanical properties of recycled products. In this study, we aim to specifically investigate the interactions between mixtures of phosphorus flame retardants (FRs) in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and evaluate their potential role in the mechanical recycling of melt-spun fibers. Two highly relevant commercial FRs, namely a DOPO-derivative (DOPO-PEPA or DP) and Aflammit PCO 900 (AF), are added to PET compounds as additives using a melt compounder. The melt stability of PET/FR compounds over extended processing time is assessed by chemical, thermal, and rheological measurements. DP shows a molecular lubrication effect, lowering the melt viscosity of PET, while AF promotes chemical changes (i.e., chain branching/crosslinking). Interestingly, a PET compound containing hybrid mixtures of DP/AF 20/80 (wt.%/wt.%) shows the most stable behavior at high temperatures under both nitrogen and air atmospheres, thus showing a synergistic effect. Most importantly, in a recycling scenario, the stabilization effect persists at diluted concentrations below the typical FR contents in PET. Multiple extrusion cycles are used to assess the repeated processing behavior of the compounds, and the mechanical properties and fire behavior of melt-spun fibers are compared before and after recycling. • 3D porous Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 /Mo 2 C@NC framework with carbon microspheres is fabricated using a dual template strategy. • Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 /Mo 2 C@NC framework delivers outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption performance. • Good lightweight, self-cleaning, magnetic response, and flame retardant are realized in Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 /Mo 2 C@NC framework. The swift advancement of electronics technology has led to a burgeoning interest in multifunctionalizing electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials as a prospective avenue for future development. However, the effective integration of diverse functions within a single material continues to present challenges. This work successfully fabricated a three-dimensional (3D) porous Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 /Mo 2 C@NC framework with carbon microspheres through uncomplicated freeze-drying and high-temperature pyrolysis techniques. The resultant magnetic bimetallic carbide (Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 and Mo 2 C) nanoparticles are uniformly and densely embedded within the carbon layer, facilitated jointly by a rigid template (molybdenum salt) and a flexible template (glucose), thus realizing an exceptional dual loss mechanism involving dielectric and magnetic components. The establishment of the 3D porous conductive network enhances EMW absorption through multiple reflections and scattering mechanisms. Impressively, the Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 /Mo 2 C@NC framework attains remarkable EMW absorption characteristics with ultralightweight (0.1567 g cm–3), ultrathin matching thickness (1.7 mm), and robust absorption (reflection loss R L value of –65.89 dB). Furthermore, it achieves a noteworthy effective absorption bandwidth (EAB, R L ≤ –10 dB) spanning 6.4 GHz, ensuring complete absorption of 100 % within the X band (8–12 GHz) at a matching thickness of 2 mm. In addition, the Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 /Mo 2 C@NC framework exhibits pronounced hydrophobicity and magnetic responsiveness, bestowing upon it appealing attributes including self-cleaning, flame retardancy, and thermal insulation, on par with those observed in commercial products. The radar cross-sectional area (RSC) reduction value of the Co 6 Mo 6 C 2 /Mo 2 C@NC framework can reach 35.2 dB m2 by RSC simulation, which can effectively lower the likelihood of detection by radar detectors for the target. This study presents a viable strategy for the advancement of novel lightweight and multifunctional materials that demonstrate exceptional performance in absorbing electromagnetic waves. PCS/GP@FPUF with 35% weight gain of PCS/GP can receive the UL-94 V-0 rating and obtain a 32% reduction of peak heat release rate value compared with that of FPUF, and it remains relatively dense char residues. The effective heat of combustion of PCS/GP@FPUF is 21.6 kJ/g, presenting a 22% decrease compared with that of FPUF. Meanwhile, the PCS/GP coatings mainly have the condensed-phase flame-retardant mechanism associated with the analysis of char residues and the volatile products released through the thermal degradation process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirm that the char residues of PCS/GP@FPUF consist of highly-graphitized carbon and it formed P-N-Si synergistic char layers. In addition, the antibacterial rates of PCS/GP@FPUF against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are 99.99%, and the incorporation of GP-108 does not influence the antibacterial properties of PCS. Importantly, the resiliency of FPUFs has been slightly influenced. Briefly, the flame-retardant and antibacterial FPUFs with wonderful resiliency are hopeful to be applied as filler materials for vehicle seats and obtain longer service lives. The resulting DAL- x /EP composite exhibits excellent flame retardancy with a desirable UL-94 V-0 rating and a satisfactory limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 29.8% due to the appropriate phosphorus content of DAL- x with adjustable molecular chain structure. Moreover, the DAL- x /EP composite shows an unexpected improvement in the elastic modulus (∼36%) and well-preserved strength and ductility compared with those of pure EP. This work offers a feasible strategy for creating efficient bio-based flame retardants utilizing industrial waste lignin and preparing high-performance EP composites that meet the demanding requirement of fire retardancy in industries, contributing to the circular economy and sustainability. Herein, hierarchical thermoplastic polyurethane/cyclophosphazene functionalized titanium carbide/carbon fiber fabric (TPU/CP-Ti 3 C 2 T x /CF) nanocomposites with high fire safety and mechanical strength and toughness were prepared through the methods of melt blending, layer-by-layer stacking and thermocompression. The TPU/CP-Ti 3 C 2 T x showed improved thermal stability. Moreover, the peak of heat release rate and total heat release of the hierarchical TPU sample containing 4.0 wt.% CP-Ti 3 C 2 T x were respectively reduced by 64.4% and 31.8% relative to those of pure TPU, which were far higher than those of other TPU-based nanocomposites. The averaged EMI shielding effectiveness value of the hierarchical TPU/CP-Ti 3 C 2 T x -2.0/CF nanocomposite reached 30.0 dB, which could satisfy the requirement for commercial applications. Furthermore, the tensile strength of TPU/CP-Ti 3 C 2 T x -2.0/CF achieved 43.2 MPa, and the ductility and toughness increased by 28.4% and 84.3% respectively compared to those of TPU/CF. Interfacial hydrogen bonding in combination with catalytic carbonization of CP-Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets and continuous conductive network of CF were responsible for the superior fire safety, excellent EMI shielding and outstanding mechanical performances. This work offers a promising strategy to prepare multifunctional TPU-based nanocomposites, which have the potential for large-scale application in the fields of electronics, electrical equipment and 5 G facilities. Bio-based polyurethane foam has attracted increasing attentions due to eco-friendliness and fossil feedstock issues. However, the inherent flammability limits its application in different fields. Herein, we demonstrate a green bio-based flame-retardant system to fabricate polyurethane foam composite with durable flame retardancy, smoke suppression, and thermal insulation property. In this system, the green bio-based polyol (VED) with good reactivity and compatibility plays a role of flame retardant and EG acts as a synergistic filler. As a result, the LOI value of foam composite increased to 30.5 vol.% and it achieved a V-0 rating in the UL-94 vertical burning test. Additionally, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and the total smoke production (TSP) decreased by 66.1% and 63.4%, respectively. Furthermore, the foam composite maintained durable flame retardancy after accelerated thermal aging test, whose thermal-insulating property was maintained even after being treated in high-humidity environment with 85% R.H. for a week. This work provides a facile strategy for durable flame retardancy and long-term thermal insulation performance, and creates opportunities for the practical applications of bio-based foam composites. The flame retardancy is an important topic in the wire and cable industry. Since people realized the environmental and health concerns associated with brominated flame retardant, Halogen Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) have been developed to replace it. Among them, the metal hydroxides, mainly aluminum hydroxide (ATH) and magnesium hydroxide (MDH), have become the dominate HFFR for wire and cable applications. There are several challengers to make ATH and MDH compounds on a twin-screw extruder. A continuous mixer however, has different mechanical features and operation conditions. This work shows that it can lend itself readily to the ATH/MDH based HFFR compounding for wire and cable. In this study, a Continuous Mixer from Farrel was used to compound EVA/ATH and EVA/MDH at 65% and 70% ATH or MDH loading level respectively. The compounds were tested for MFI, specific gravity, actual filler loading level and UL-94 rating. V-0 UL94 rating are achieved for both samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Atom-economic synthetic strategy of a P/N fire retardant (APN) is developed. • 3 wt% APN significantly improves the fire safety of PLA. • The toughness of PLA increases by 85% but maintaining its tensile strength. Renewable and biodegradable polylactide (PLA) has excellent mechanical strength but is highly flammable which restricts its practical applications. Many phosphorus/nitrogen (P/N)-based flame retardants are effective in PLA, but their high addition loading usually decreases the mechanical strength of the PLA bulk. For polyphosphoramides, despite high fire-retardant efficiency, their chemical synthesis often generates chemical wastes as byproducts. Herein, we report an atom-economic and highly efficient oligomeric P/N fire retardant (APN) prepared using a mild Michael addition polymerization with no byproducts. Using only 3 wt% APN, the resulting PLA exhibits desired fire retardancy including a UL-94 V-0 rating and a limiting oxygen index of 37.6%. Furthermore, the toughness of the fire-retardant PLA increases by 85% compared to pure PLA, with both tensile strength and thermal stability preserved. This work offers an atom-economic strategy for synthesizing highly efficient P/N fire retardants for use in the creation of fire-resistant PLA with robust mechanical properties. Herein, we report a highly flexible, mechanically stable, fire-retardant, and high-temperature-resistant ceramic membrane based on the interlocked Si 3 N 4 nanowires formed by the precursor pyrolysis method. The Si 3 N 4 nanowire membrane (SNM) has excellent high-temperature resistance under alcohol lamps and butane spray lance. The thermal insulation with a thermal conductivity as low as 0.056 W m–1 K–1 can be attributed to the high porosity of SNM, which makes it a desirable candidate for heat insulators under harsh conditions. More importantly, SNM exhibits thermal stability and robust mechanical properties in the range of 25 to 1300 °C. The high-temperature resistance of SNM up to 1300 °C is achieved by the four stages: Si 3 N 4 nanowires, Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 nanowires, SiO 2 nanowires, and bead-like SiO 2 nanowires. After heat-treated at 1300 °C, the macroscopic size of SNM does not change significantly, and the interlocked structure is still maintained. Furthermore, SNM still maintains excellent mechanical properties, with tensile strength as high as 0.26 MPa. This work provides a facile method for fabricating excellent thermal insulating and fire-retardant ceramic membranes, showing prospective application prospects in the era of thermal insulating materials. The use of intumescent flame retardants (IFRs) is considered an environmentally friendly and cost-effective strategy to suppress potential fire hazards from synthetic polymers. However, some conventional IFRs are neither efficient in developing a thermally stable char layer nor reducing the release of toxic byproducts during polymer combustion. In this work, we aim to discuss the effects of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) on synergistically improving the flame retardancy behaviors in polypropylene (PP) composites, including thermal degradation (evolved gas analysis), free radical reactions in the gaseous phase (in-situ chemiluminescent image analysis), and carbonaceous structure in the condensed phase (micro-morphology and composition analysis). It is found that the transition metals in ZIFs can catalytically accelerate the crosslinking reaction at a lower initial temperature and decrease the amount of hydrocarbon volatiles in the gaseous phase. Once ignited, the embedded ZIFs can firstly bridge adjacent phosphorus chains in the polymer matrix to expand crosslinking degrees and then they are anchored in the developed N-doped phospho-carbonaceous networks after pyrolysis. As a result, more compact char residue structures are observed in the condensed phase for ZIF-reinforced composites. For example, by replacing 2 wt% of IFR with ZIF-67, the peak heat release rate, peak smoke production rate, and peak CO production rate are reduced by 69%, 80%, and 72%, respectively, when compared to the conventional composite. These results indicate an excellent solution to resolve inherent fire hazards associated with IFRs in polymers and achieve necessary efficiency for industrial applications. LCFE could improve the order degree of BADCy cured network, in favor of enhancing the wave-transparent performance, mechanical properties, and intrinsic thermal conductivity. In this work, carbon nanotubes and ammonium polyphosphate (CNTs@APP) composite were prepared by crosslinking with the silane coupling agent (KH550). The flame retardancy is improved with the increase of APP. However, the microwave absorption performance (MAP) and processing difficulty changed greatly as well. Therefore, magnesium aluminum double-layer metal hydroxide (LDH) was obtained by coprecipitation method and processing into the coating, so as to realize flame retardancy which reaches the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 24.8% and good MAP at the same time. Then, a high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS™) was used to simulate the pyramid model to realize the broadband absorption, and the optimal parameter range was obtained, that is, when the total height of the material is 40 mm, the height of the base accounts for 1/5–1/3, and the tangent of the half top angle is near 1/5, which result in the best MAP. Finally, the broadband absorption of 14.36 GHz (3.64–18 GHz) was realized when the base height is 1/3, and the broadband absorption of 14 GHz (4–18 GHz) can be realized under the condition of large-angle oblique incidence of 0°–60°.
