How can scientific journals satisfy an admirable desire for open-mindedness and aversion to censorship while minimizing the publication of junk science? We consider this question in the context of the Bem (2011) paper reporting extra-sensory perception among Cornell students, which received a lot of attention in part because the editors made the decision to publish the article despite extreme skepticism of its claims. We consider the reasons, good and bad, for journals to publish such papers, and then we propose an alternative way in which the journal could publish without seeming to endorse outlandish claims. Our proposal is to flip the standard scheme of scientific publication by privileging data rather than strong conclusions presented with an air of certainty. Genomic screening at population scale generates many ethical considerations. One is the normative role that people's preferences should play in determining access to genomic information in screening contexts, particularly information that falls beyond the scope of screening. We expect both that people will express a preference to receive such results and that there will be interest from the professional community in providing them. In this paper, we consider this issue in relation to the just and equitable design of population screening programs like reproductive genetic carrier screening (RGCS). Drawing on a pluralistic public health ethics perspective, we claim that generating and reporting information about genetic variants beyond the scope of the screening program usually lacks clinical, and perhaps personal, utility. Long used as a tool for medical compliance and adhering to treatment plans, behavior contracts have made their way into the in-patient healthcare setting as a way to manage the "difficult" patient and family. The use of this tool is even being adopted by health-care ethics consultants (HECs) in US hospitals as part of their work in navigating conflict at the bedside. Anecdotal evidence of their increasing popularity among clinical ethicists, for example. can be found at professional bioethics meetings and conversations and idea-sharing among practitioners on HEC social media. While there are a handful of papers gesturing toward a bioethical critique of behavior contracts of various types. the use of behavior contracts in the context of interpersonal conflict has not been vetted by bio-ethicists to determine their ethical legitimacy or efficacy. In this paper. we highlight a set of ethical concerns that we believe must be addressed before continuing or widespread implementation of behavior contracts to manage the "difficult" patient or family. Rojava has recently received significant global attention thanks to the victories achieved there by the revolutionary Kurdish militia controlling the region and its Women's Protection Units against ISIS. An international community that has long been silent about Kurdish oppression was suddenly fascinated by the Rojava revolution and its potential for women's liberation. But this current interest elides vital political and conceptual contributions of activists in Rojava and elsewhere in Kurdistan, and reinscribes the orientalist and imperial scripts invoked in the representation of the emancipatory politics of the region's peoples. Pushing against these frameworks, this paper examines the new method of Kurdish decolonization, "democratic confederalism," as a distinct and perhaps novel contribution to the global repertoire of anticolonial thought and practice, especially with its re-envisioning of the revolutionary role violence and nonviolence can play in liberation. Tracing the intellectual and political process that turned decoloniz-ing Kurds from the pursuit of a territorial nation-state towards the revolutionary and feminist transformation of colonized sites and lives, it distinguishes this decolonial politics and its central means of community self-defense from both its reactionary opposites and revolutionary siblings. Foregrounding its foundationally anti-nationalist character, the paper proposes to approach this revolutionary, egalitarian, and community based self-defense as a rival ethics of nonviolence. This paper provides a non-exhaustive analysis of the ubuntu-based human rights approach to sustainable development adopted recently by the African Arbitration Academy's Model Bilateral Investment Treaty. The concept of ubuntu is used in this approach to sustainable development as an overriding principle for the interpretation, performance and enforcement of substantive treaty provisions, including investors' human rights obligations. Through this original approach, sustainable development objectives are to be achieved in the host state by focusing on effective protection and implementation of human rights. Specifically, the study employs the methodology of legal analysis of provisions derived primarily from the model, the methodology of comparative analysis and the comprehensive study doctrine. The paper suggests that the ubuntu-based human rights approach has the potential to enhance the acceptance of human rights, effectively implement them and contribute to the achievement of sustainable development goals. This paper analyses the activities of five organizations shaping the debate over the global governance of genome editing in order to assess current approaches to public engagement (PE). We compare the recommendations of each group with its own practices. All recommend broad engagement with the general public, but their practices vary from expert-driven models dominated by scientists, experts, and civil society groups to citizen deliberation-driven models that feature bidirectional consultation with local citizens, as well as hybrid models that combine elements of both approaches. Only one group practices PE that seeks community perspectives to advance equity. In most cases. PE does little more than record already well-known views held by the most vocal groups, and thus is unlikely to produce more just or equitable processes or policy outcomes. This paper analyzes the seemingly outdated binary Jews and Germans on the level of power relations and lived experiences. By analyzing an in-depth interview, it shows how the violent past of National Socialism and the Shoah reaches into the present and into love relationships. The case study illustrates that the categories 'Jews' and 'German' are needed as analytical tools to understand these aftermaths. In conclusion, the contribution argues that while the categories can be appropriated and lived in an agentic way, the binary is useful to capture and analyze positionalities and power relations. The U.K. policy of "Prevent" aims to stop people becoming involved in, or supporting, terrorism. In common with many CVE policies worldwide. Prevent has remained controversial in its conception, delivery, and impact. A formal review is now underway, so it is opportune to ask, "Whither Prevent?" This paper will examine briefly the justifications for Prevent, but the main thesis is that the juridification of Prevent is a beneficial trend in the U.K. Juridification is depicted as: the legislative production of ever more extensive and elaborate instruments; the expansion of judicial oversight; and the administrative (bureaucratic) application of soft law-standards. Juridification is here invoked in order to enhance the legitimacy of the policy of Prevent through explicit improvements in its modes of operation and through offering modes of challenge where the principles of constitutionalism are contravened. If Prevent can be improved in these ways, then its application can be refined to address more effectively and efficiently the threat of terrorist attacks, especially given that the originators or observers of these threats are invited under the Prevent policy to cooperate by consent in the enterprise of counter terrorism. This article provides new insights into the history of forced migration during the Nazi regime by investigating the maritime space of the 'ship' and its inscribed notions and perceptions in times of persecution and oppression. It highlights the various functions and transformations of the 'ship', but also analyses the conflicting social, political and economic interests of the different protagonists. This paper is a collection of thoughts from multiple discussions about the importance of appreciating and embracing statistical thinking in public health research and education. We think that statistical simulations can play an important role in fostering statistical reasoning in public health and that they can be a great didactic tool for students to generate and learn from data. Two main points are of relevance here. First, simulations can foster critical thinking and improve our reasoning about public health problems by going from theoretical thoughts to practical implementation of designing a computer experiment. Second, simulations can support researchers and their students to better understand statistical concepts used when describing and analysing population health in terms of distributions. A series of Supreme Court decisions in the past 40 years transformed the legal standard for police use of force, centering officers' assessments of a suspect's potential for violence. Using the oral arguments from three landmark SCOTUS cases, I trace the development of a legal discourse of potential violence. Using Judith Butler and Robert Gooding-Williams' frame of a "racial field of vision," this paper juxtaposes the colorblind legal narrative of potential violence with cultural narratives of race that mark Black masculinity with the signifiers of threat and criminality. I argue that the intersection of legal and cultural narratives of potential violence is an important site for understanding the disproportionate use of police violence against Black men and boys. Eating disorders are mental illnesses that can have a significant and persistent physical impact, especially for those who are not treated early in their disease trajectory. Although many persons with eating disorders may make a full recovery, some may not; this is especially the case when it comes to persons with severe and enduring anorexia nervosa (SEAN), namely, those who have had anorexia for between 6 and 12 years or more. Given that persons with SEAN are less likely to make a full recovery, a different treatment philosophy might be ethically warranted. One potential yet scarcely considered way to treat persons with SEAN is that of a harm reduction approach. A harm reduction philosophy is deemed widely defensible in certain contexts (e.g. in the substance use and addictions domain), and in this paper we argue that it may be similarly ethically defensible for treating persons with SEAN in some circumstances. Health disparities are primarily driven by structural inequality including systemic racism. Medical educators. led by the AAMC have tended to minimize these core drivers of health disparities. Instead, it has adopted a culture-based agenda through the frame-work of cultural competence to address disparities despite a paucity of supporting data. Cultural competence is: thnocentric in orientation and its content sustains biases that are long-standing in health care. Moreover. Cultural competence is based on a number of flawed assumptions and is not structured around a set of clearly stated ethical values. In this paper. we will demonstrate ways in which Cultural competence reflects embedded ethnocentrism. perpetuates entrenched biases. and fails to recognize the depth and breadth of systemic racism as these relate to the stated goal ot Cultural competence-the mitigation of health disparities. This paper presents an overview investigation of Jews' Court, Lincoln, research findings, and preliminary thoughts on the form and location of the English medieval synagogue. Dr Cecil Roth assigned synagogue use to the building in the medieval period; however, its appearance is of post-medieval date. The study which took a buildings archaeology approach concluded that Roth's hypothesis was incorrect. It further investigated the divergent opinions on the building's construction date and phasing. This paper presents thoughts on the use of medieval building typologies to inform the understanding of the material evidence for the Medieval Anglo-Jewish community and hypotheses on the form and location of medieval synagogues. Analytic power has always been a key consideration in adjudicating between analytic frameworks, but the political effects of frameworks have never been unimportant in assessing their relative value. This paper engages the question of whether the American Left's dominant intellectual framework for understanding racial socio-political outcomes--the framework of "structural racism"--encourages a racial political pessimism that is disabling. Finding it at least plausible that this framework dampens democratic motivation, I then introduce an alternative framework for understanding racial stasis and change in the US and elsewhere--a "complex systems" framework. Even as it provides leverage on persistent racial inequality, I argue that this framework suggests the deep pessimism inspired by the structural racism framework is unwarranted. Over the last few decades, multiple studies have examined the understanding of participants in clinical research. They show variable and often poor understanding of key elements of disclosure, such as expected risks and the experimental nature of treatments. Did the participants in these studies give valid consent? According to the standard view of informed consent they did not. The standard view holds that the recipient of consent has a duty to disclose certain information to the profferer of consent because valid consent requires that information to be understood. The contents of the understanding and disclosure requirements are therefore conceptually linked. In this paper, we argue that the standard view is mistaken. The disclosure and understanding requirements have distinct grounds tied to two different ways in which a token of consent can be rendered invalid. Analysis of these grounds allows us to derive the contents of the two requirements, it also implies that it is sometimes permissible to enroll willing participants who have not understood everything that they ought to be told about their clinical trials. Precision medicine relies on data and biospecimens from participants who willingly offer their personal information on the promise that this act will ultimately result in knowledge that will improve human health. Drawing on anthropological framings of the "gift." this paper contextualizes participation in precision medicine as inextricable from social relationships and their ongoing ethical obligations. Going beyond altruism, reframing biospecimen and data collection in terms of socially regulated gift-giving recovers questions of responsibility and care. As opposed to conceiving participation in terms of donations that elide clinical labor critical to precision medicine. the gift metaphor underscores ethical commitments to reciprocity and responsibility. This demands confronting inequities in precision medicine, such as systemic bias and lack of affordability and access. Any form of disability renders one more vulnerable to becoming a victim of violence (including sexual abuse) than peers without disability. Within the disability sphere, persons with communication disabilities are particularly vulnerable due to various contributing factors. Despite this heightened risk and the subsequent increased need to seek justice, access to justice remains elusive for these individuals. Their communication disabilities hinder their ability to seek the assistance of police officers, which is the entry point for accessing the justice system. The repercussions are that these cases seldom go to court and in the rare event that they do, the court appears to be unaware and unable to efficiently provide accommodations that would allow individuals with communication -disabilities to obtain justice. Augmentative and alternative communication can allow them to exercise their autonomy, to make decisions, and share information. In this paper, several different augmentative and alternative communication methods and strategies are described with a focus on picture-based systems. A recent South African case is used to illustrate how access to justice was achieved using such a system. According to Buffon's needle problem, you can approximate the value of π by throwing needles onto arrays of parallel lines and counting the number of needles crossing the lines. However, it is time-consuming to do the experiment in reality (in 1901, Lazzarini threw 3408 needles to approximate the value of π). In this paper, we tried to approximate the value of π from easily-accesible images of fallen leaves. We extended Buffon's needle problem in two ways: instead of a simple needle we considered a complex shape, and instead of a uniform size we considered various sizes. After we confirmed the extension by a computer simulation, we approximated the value of π from the images we took experimentally and we while walking. From the experimentally-taken images (50 leaves/image × 20 images), the value of π was approximated as 3.1569. A golden rectangle is characterized by the fact that if an inscribed square is removed from one end, then the remaining rectangle is similar to the original one. By iterating this process of removing a square, one obtains an infinite sequence of nested golden rectangles which converges to a point. This paper examines the protection of the socio-economic rights and benefits in view of the relief measures taken to alleviate the economic distress caused by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Similar to South African counterparts, refugees and asylum seekers looked up to the South African government for their protection (known as 'the surrogate national protection') because they could not turn to their home governments from which they fled for national protection. It considers the divergence between the principles of refugee protection and citizenship, to underline that the South African government has the responsibility to protect refugees and asylum seekers. Drawing upon these principles, the paper analyses the Covid-19 relief packages from the perspectives of the spirits, purport, and objects of the Refugees Act 130 of 1998. In particular, it critically illustrates the conflicted and ambivalent attitudes of the South African government towards the implementation of surrogate national protection in real and actual situations. Ptolemy's theorem is a classical result obtained in the late Greek-Roman period, whose first application was to provide computational support to a geocentric cosmological model. This model's most important achievement was that it explained the apparent movement of celestial bodies to a subjective observer on the Earth. What makes Ptolemy's theorem a very interesting case in the history of mathematics is that the Euclidean concept of a Ptolemaic configuration can be investigated in the geometry of general metric spaces, in a situation very similar to the triangle inequality. To complement the historical narrative, in the final part of our paper we introduce a new norm, related to the Euclidean, Chebyshev, and Manhattan norms, and we investigate its properties in relation with other norms, hoping to illustrate how this fundamental configuration traversed Euclidean geometry, complex geometry, and analysis, transformational geometry, to become an interesting classification criterion in metric geometry. In undergraduate mathematics classes, the most common discrete version of logistic growth is defined by the difference equation p n + 1 = k (L − p n) p n . While this is a natural analog of the logistic differential equation, and while in many cases it produces results similar to those of the continuous model, it can also give rise to chaotic behavior. This paper derives in a natural way an alternative discrete logistic model, defined by the Verhulst difference equation, with several noteworthy properties. For example the Verhulst equation has closed form solutions given by continuous logistic curves and never leads to chaotic behavior. Our development of the Verhulst equation also provides a beautiful example of the formulation-application-refinement cycle of mathematical modeling.
