For the thirty-seventh year, the Research and Theory Division and the Division of Instructional Design of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) sponsored the publication of these Proceedings. Papers published in this volume were presented at the annual AECT Convention in Jacksonville, Florida. This year's Proceedings is presented in two volumes--Volume 1 includes twenty-seven research and development papers. Volume 2 includes thirty-one papers on the practice of educational communications and technology. This critical qualitative study focused on what are the factors that contribute to high learner performance at a public school in South Africa. Purposive sampling was used and the data was produced via interviews with the participants (the principal, ten teachers, five ex learners and two parents) as well as observations of various school activities. Artistic license was used and the data presented in a three act play, each act focusing on a particular theme. The literature reviewed focused on functional and dysfunctional schools. A triptych theoretical approach (Marx, Bourdieu, Bronfenbrenner) underpinned this study. The key finding was the fetish for excellence with an enabling curriculum as a factor that as played an important role in contributing to high learner performance.

Continuing art activities in art try to undertake a different mission. It is very valuable and important for individuals who receive Art Education to be able to say I am in art activities. Because of the spread of art and the understanding that it is a value on its own, the exhibitions provide a lot of benefits to the field in terms of accepting that it is an original method of expression. The importance of those who are enthusiastic to see many good works together, the pride and determination have given to them if they have been exhibited, raising the standards of aesthetic perception with the psychology of competition and increasing their interest in the field are important situations. In the field of deep-rooted competitive exhibitions, the links of the chain can be seen year by year and a social memory of art can be created. The fact that it is not possible to collect artistically qualified works that have achieved certain standards from a historical perspective is important. In addition, if the historical development and perspective of social memory from an artistic point of view are to be mentioned, it will be better understood why similar activities are important. There is a popular myth that mathematical creativity is a trait possessed by a small group of people. This is perpetuated by the lack of understanding of what influences mathematical creativity, especially in the classroom. In particular, professional mathematicians often name aesthetic experiences as a critical aspect of their mathematical creativity. Therefore, this study examines aesthetic dimensions of episodes of student creativity from the high school classroom. Several types of aesthetic experiences arose across the episodes. Students were motivated to take creative action by experiences of mystery or discomfort. Furthermore, in some instances, taking a creative action was accompanied and propelled by a sense of craziness or satisfaction. [For the complete proceedings, see ED630210.]

When mathematics educators work towards making mathematics more relevant, they often think about including more real-world applications into mathematics lessons. But what happens when a lesson is devoid of real-world contexts? In what ways can students find it relevant? This study explores how high school students perceived relevance when they were asked to describe their experiences during decontextualized mathematics lessons. Students highlighted how they found certain characteristics of the lessons to be useful in their learning and how they perceived relevance through different feelings experienced in the lessons. Most people might see graffiti and street art as two similar art forms. They decorate the buildings and walls of city streets. There is some truth in making this assumption. Both are forms of creative expression found on walls and other parts of the city. However, there are some notable differences between the two. The most well-known difference is that graffiti is illegal. Street art has a history of approval to improve and revitalize areas of the town or city. Well-known artists are often asked to put together these works of art. Street artists willingly sign their works with their own names. Graffiti artists remain anonymous and hide behind tags or work in groups to make illegal art expressions. Graffiti and street art are among the contemporary art genres and can be seen side by side in the same environment. Culture draws attention as the whole of life activities organized in certain periods of humanity with social values, norms and relations. Culture, as the whole of these life activities specific to each period and society that is in a constant state of being, changing, develops with the norms and values that are accepted as the common acceptance of the majority in some similar societies and forms the current culture, while at the same time completing its structure with cultural subcultures with their own distinctive styles. In recent years, major schools of architecture have considered that teaching architectural history has become obsolete, for it could not possibly respond to the crisis our contemporary buildings and cities are facing, a crisis that derives, as increasing research demonstrates, from breaking apart architecture from its user, the human being. Architectural history represents, simplistically expressed, the account of centuries of interaction between human beings and the spaces they created. This paper will present a novel pedagogical methodology that uses a phenomenological approach in teaching the history of architecture, its purpose being to progressively and intuitively help students realize spatial perception is not a high abstraction, a complicated notion, but an objective biopsychological human feature they can access at any time and use to feel, understand and create spaces that will become places imbued with meaning. Contemporary architectural pedagogy is preponderantly focused on cultivating spatial intelligence through a series of conceptual studio projects and theoretical courses dealing mainly with abstract notions. Even architectural phenomenology, when and where it is taught, remains at a theoretical level. Pedagogy focused on conceptual architecture creates architects with highly skilled aptitudes to produce only geometrically feasible and sound spaces, spaces that are not necessarily places to be inhabited in the sense Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Norberg-Schulz, Alvar Aalto, Juhani Pallasmaa, Tadao Ando or Kengo Kuma would have meant them to be. In such a conceptually-driven studio culture, using historical architectural precedents, analyzing them and extracting the essential, objective and unchanging principles they hold, and using those principles discovered though analysis in joint studio projects, has proved to offer interesting and unexpected benefits in students' ability to sense space, to understand the inherent qualities of various types of spaces and to subsequently make use of the acquired spatial experience in their projects, the results being architectural places, not just architectural spaces. Though studying the different ways in which physical spaces have been artfully created and used, programmatically speaking, throughout the history of architecture, students are given the opportunity to understand how those spaces and their interrelations objectively affect humans as conscious beings, regardless of the culture they come from or the language they speak, and offer them a deeper understanding of the spatial "alphabet" some architects write dry prose with, while others create profound, meaningful poetry. How can we design mathematical lessons that spark student interest? To answer this, we analyzed teacher-designed and enacted lessons that students described as interesting for how the content unfolded. When compared to those the same students describe as uninteresting, multiple distinguishing characteristics are evident, such as the presence of misdirection, mathematical questions that remain unanswered for extended time, and a greater number of questions that are unanswered at each point of the lesson. Low-interest lessons did not contain many special narrative features and mostly had questions that were answered immediately. Our findings offer guidance for the design of lessons that can shift student mathematical dispositions. [For the complete proceedings, see ED629884.]

This paper discusses the power of performed research. Such power lies in assisting to research the whole human -- thought, action, and emotion. The paper discusses the potential for research through the arts in the development of creativity and imagination, to facilitate social change, and to explore performance as a research process as well as an end result that presents findings. The experiences of Bagley and Cancienne (2001); (2002) guided the creation of the work, and assist to frame this paper. The dance work discussed in this paper is a recent addition to the performed research work "The First Time". The dance work was crafted to bring together the comparable experiences of first year teacher participants, and similarities among the findings of research into their identity. The creation of "The First Time" was employed as a tool to understand and analyse the data. The dance work was employed to highlight findings regarding beginning teachers' transition to teaching. This paper explores the process of creating and presenting arts-based research to expand the avenues through which the results of research are made available to a relevant audience; of how this method might broaden and complement traditional ways of thinking about and doing educational research.

Efforts to enhance the aesthetic impact of mathematics lessons must account for the role of teachers in shaping the unfolding mathematical content of their enacted lessons. In this paper, we draw from Dietiker (2015) to describe differences in the mathematical stories of the enacted lessons of two veteran teachers teaching the same lesson. We identify connections between these differences and the variations in student experiences as illustrated by visible student reactions. [For the complete proceedings, see ED583608.]

The purpose of this study is to explore how three interaction strategies through mobile applications affect students' music listening. Data was collected from 225 high school students and analyzed using the ANCOVA procedure in the three domains of music listening: analytic, aesthetic and sensory. Research showed that the interaction with teachers was most influential in the analytic listening of the participants. Interaction with peers was most influential in aesthetic listening of the participants. Interaction with the application was most influential in sensory listening of the participants. Differences in students' satisfaction according to the three interactions through the mobile application are discussed. This study has implications on how interactions could be designed for students' music listening. [For the complete proceedings, see ED601080.]

Ecological attitude education in primary school is both important and special. That way fundamental moral values of a young person are formed. Every day increasing ecological problems become much more diverse. It is important to develop a man able to perceive the current ecological situation and able to live in a harmonious interaction with nature. It is sought that ethical, aesthetical, psychological, juridical person's relationship with nature would become the criterion of culture. The formation of a positive relationship with the surrounding world, the environment remains a very significant element of education in a primary school. It is hopeful that the attitudes with respect to nature formed at this ontogenesis stage will remain for the whole life. In this context, it is very important to appropriately diagnose the current attitude structure and on the basis of diagnostics correspondingly organise the education process. In April 2019 a pilot research was carried out, in which 127 primary school fourth class students took part. It was stated that in the attitude structure of this age children, the aesthetic attitude was prevalent. The last according to the ranking was the ethical attitude. Correspondingly, in the second position was the cognitive, and in the third -- the pragmatic one. [For the full proceedings, see ED619611.]

The comparative analysis of different meanings of Chemistry is carried out, taking in account philosophical, didactic, psychological and socio-cultural aspects. The issue is discussed in terms of the concurrent existence of two different subsystems referred both to Science and Education which can be found in presentations of chemistry knowledge. The study overviews researcher's findings made in the field of Science Philosophy and Chemistry Didactics. Theoretical study based on profound concepts from Science and Chemistry philosophy as well on few empiric researches carried out by researcher in the field of Chemistry Didactics. Martin Heidegger's seminal essay, "The Origin of the Work of Art", captures much of what is original and enduring in his philosophical offering. Although his essay takes as its subject the relationship between art, the work of art and the artist; Heidegger's inquiry covers conceptual ground that is particularly pertinent to science education. More precisely: given the ubiquity and importance of things and equipment in the science classroom, Heidegger's meticulous inquiry into the nature of "things", "equipment" and "the work" offers the potential for a re-conceptualisation of science education that loosens the grip of traditional accounts. This paper adopts the approach and conclusions put forward in Heidegger's essay in order to examine philosophically the status of things and equipment in the science classroom. While it draws upon Heidegger's inquiry into the work of art, it goes beyond his analysis by examining the relationship between science, science education and art, and the special role that science teaching plays in instantiating these connections. In doing so, the paper puts forward the claim that the "work" of the science teacher may be conceived of as "works of art" in the Heideggerian sense; and provides the basis for a postmodern interpretation of science education. In this theoretical article, I examine the norms of teacher professional development with an eye towards modifying them to allow for genuine systemic change. I first argue that current norms restrict professional development practice to "pseudo-activity" which necessarily operates within rather than against larger societal structures. I then propose philosophical and structural contemplation of mathematics as an example of a currently non-normed practice that has the potential to effect substantive change. This book contains a compilation of papers presented at the International Psychological Applications Conference and Trends (InPACT) 2018, organized by the World Institute for Advanced Research and Science (W.I.A.R.S.). Modern psychology offers a large range of scientific fields where it can be applied. The goal of understanding individuals and groups (mental functions and behavioral standpoints), from this academic and practical scientific discipline, aims ultimately to benefit society. The International Conference seeks to provide some answers and explore the several areas within the Psychology field, new developments in studies and proposals for future scientific projects. The goal is to offer a worldwide connection between psychologists, researchers and lecturers, from a wide range of academic fields, interested in exploring and giving their contribution in psychological issues. We take pride in having been able to connect and bring together academics, scholars, practitioners and others interested in a field that is fertile in new perspectives, ideas and knowledge. We counted on an extensive variety of contributors and presenters, which can supplement the view of the human essence and behavior, showing the impact of their different personal, academic and cultural experiences. This is, certainly, one of the reasons there are nationalities and cultures represented, inspiring multi-disciplinary collaborative links, fomenting intellectual encounter and development. InPACT 2018 received 386 submissions, from more than 35 different countries from all over the world, reviewed by a double-blind process. Submissions were prepared to take form of Oral Presentations, Posters, Virtual Presentations and Workshops. 126 submissions (overall, 32% acceptance rate) were accepted for presentation in the conference.
