Finally, the Los Angeles Public library has expanded its services for the visually impaired with the opening of low-vision service centers at select locations in the central library.

The National Center for Education Statistics' biennial collection of statistical data from college and university libraries will open officially on November 22, 2004. Academic library directors received a letter containing a registration certificate in October, including a user identification and password to access the web-based forms. The interactive menus, available on the agency's web page will be available on March 22, 2005. As soon as possible after the end of the data collection period, 2004 data will be available in the Academic Libraries Peer Comparison Tools. Web scale discovery services for the library environment have the capacity to more easily connect researchers with the library's vast information repository. This includes locally held and hosted content, such as physical holdings, digital collections, and local institutional repositories. Perhaps more significantly, web scale discovery also accesses a huge array of remotely hosted content, often purchased or licensed by the library, such as publisher and aggregator content for tens of thousands of full-text journals, additional content from abstracting and indexing resources, and content from open access repositories. This chapter defines web scale discovery and highlights a few key concepts essential for understanding these services. For anyone who has worked a reference interview and heard a student utter, “I couldn't find an article in the library catalog,” web scale discovery services hold tremendous potential. Extensive research on user expectations in the discovery arena, and the tools used by those seeking information—tools often disassociated from the library and often overlooking much of what the library holds and licenses—provide ample rationale for why web scale discovery is important for the library environment. The article presents a study on the benefits of aggregating demand by the members of the Public Library Internet Consortium (PLIC) from their membership in the Indiana State Library (ISL). It notes that the PLIC was established for the optimization of the limited budgets of public libraries. Public libraries derive their non-local funding through federal funding programs under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The researchers from Indiana University School of Library and Information Science and ISL had a survey where they primarily asked whether the benefits of aggregation have justifications in the investment for Internet access in libraries. The study showed the importance of telecommunication in libraries for the electronic resources and information.

This article reports that a consortium of libraries at five New York State independent colleges and universities have been awarded a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support development of a resource-sharing system for academic libraries throughout the state. The project, called the ConnectNY, allows the institutions to share library holdings, making the collections of all five readily available to students, faculty and staff.

This article describes the use of libraries' original image collection and response to a newly created digital picture collection selected from those images. Picture Collection at Mid-Manhattan Library (MML) of the New York Public Library is a national treasure. It is a collection of over 1 million images, covering twelve thousand subjects and is used extensively by local patrons. MML has created a digital version, since some of its images were no longer protected by copyright. It is shown that collections can speak to new users in new ways. The use of the collection for classroom projects and learning add to its expanded purpose, creating its own attraction to users who might never know of this valued resource or be able to visit it in person.
