The climate changes that are happening at the moment have never been clearer, and as the world moves toward a greener economy, more consumers are seeking recyclable and climate-friendly packages with minimal environmental impact. This growing demand presents an opportunity to develop packages that support a low-carbon, circular economy without compromising food safety. Several companies are focusing on this, including Tetra Pak, which is working to innovate in the field of sustainable packaging solutions using “paper-carton”. To be able to design new packages consisting of “paper-carton”, the characterization of the maximum cell wall moisture content in plant fiber materials, to be used in packaging materials, is of great importance to explore and understand. Since paper-based materials are composite material structures primarily consisting of pulp fibers extracted from wood, the mechanical performance of the fibers and fiber network are strongly impacted by absorption of moisture. Therefore, fundamental understanding and material characterization of sorption properties are important when designing sustainable paper-based products. This master thesis focuses on developing a methodology to be able to quantify the amount of cell wall moisture content and capillary water in paper and pulp fiber networks, as well as how to determine the cell wall moisture content and capillary water in paper and pulp fiber networks evolve over time. This was done by developing a methodology using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) to characterize the maximum cell wall moisture content, that is practical for industrial material characterization. Experimental work was conducted at the division of Building Materials, Faculty of Engineering, Lund University. The investigated materials were provided by Tetra Pak in Lund. One softwood, Norway spruce, and one hardwood, birch, was included in the experiments as reference materials. Studien syftade därför till att utveckla en metod, för att kvantifiera mängden vatten i cellväggen, i pappers- och fiberbaserade material som vidare kan användas till att utveckla existerande simuleringsmodeller av pappersförpackningar. Participatory design supports developing lasting solutions through stakeholders’ active involvement in design processes. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) may reshape how participatory design is conducted. To explore the emerging implications of supporting stakeholders with AI, we conducted a systematic review (n = 14) of empirical studies. The literature suggests that AI can improve the accessibility and quality of participatory design by lowering the participatory threshold, and facilitating process execution, collaboration, and creation. Stakeholders’ use of AI also poses risks of relying on biased models, causing cognitive overload, and leading stakeholders to uncritically fixate on AI input, potentially diminishing the quality of design outcomes. Based on these findings, we explore the evolving role of AI in participatory design—and call for future research on its fallibility, participatory nature, and potential for exacerbating stakeholder vulnerabilities. Herewith, this review contributes to our understanding of how AI can support stakeholders in participatory design.

This presentation briefly outlines Queer Theory and Trans-Corporeality in relation to the methodology of research practice, commenting on its importance whilst regarding our relationship with the more-than-human. This talk is keen to play its small part in countering the damaging Western hegemony of what constitutes valid knowledge; limited only to that which can be scientifically verified or capable of logical or mathematical proof. Within the context of the existence of humanity, this particular perspective of ‘knowledge’ (i.e. an anthropocentric, scientifically positivistic, individualistic, colonial, patriarchal, ageist, and ableist one) is relatively contemporary, excluding time-honoured multicultural ways of understanding and communicating intelligence. Trans-corporeality, according to Stacy Alaimo, means that ‘all creatures, as embodied beings, are intermeshed with the dynamic, material world, which crosses through them, transforms them, and is transformed by them.’ By adopting a Trans-corporeal approach, we can consider the ways in which embracing transdisciplinary research practice can evoke significant reciprocal transformations between varying beings across both time and space. Within current sociopolitical contexts and considering the hegemonies which perpetuate climate crises, this research will subvert normative regimes, considering ‘queer’ as a verb and mirroring Meg-John Barker’s statement that ‘we queer things when we resist’. Trans-corporeal research practice resists conventional modes of the academic process, dissolving distinct boundaries between forms, and reconsidering what constitutes valid knowledge. With these considerations being explored from the lens of a transdisciplinary ecopoet and researcher, the talk includes poetry readings and stills from their current research project, Sabbat Verse.

This paper investigates how artists integrate artificial intelligence into their creative practices, using Material Engagement Theory (MET) as an analytical framework. MET provides a lens through which AI can be understood as a responsive material that actively contributes to the artistic processes. Through an analysis of 18 eminent artists’ practices in which AI is structurally used, we explore four key MET concepts: radical continuity, creative thinging, enactive discovery, and attentive unity. This approach allows us to examine AI as an active material within a co-creative process, where artists and AI discover and use each other’s affordances, thus reaching a state of unity and co-agency. AI's capacity for unexpected outputs emerges as a central feature of the co-creative process, with artists leveraging serendipity to reveal novel artistic directions. This research contributes to understanding AI’s evolving role in art, positioning MET as a valuable framework for examining the intersection between serendipity, co-agency, and materiality within the co-creative process. By acknowledging AI as a responsive material, this study reveals new directions for exploring the co-creative processes underlying AI use in art.

is study focuses on exploiting phase-transition properties in VO2 to develop a brain-inspired FitzHugh-Nagumo neuron. A key feature of our implementation is achieved through a self-coupling synapse that creates a neuron capable of generating complex firing patterns, such as mixed-mode oscillations. These oscillations hold promise for solving time-dependent computing problems. We study the advantages of coupling FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators in terms of stability and circuit simplicity compared to Kuramoto-based relaxation oscillators. We show how they can excel in solving computational tasks, specifically in pattern recognition applications.

Image-based material editing neural networks have been trained on perceptual attributes because such attributes are human-friendly. But it seems that training such networks on non-perceptual material parameters has been neglected in comparison. It is interesting that collecting perceptual experiment data has been considered an acceptable additional effort until now. It would be much easier to generate a dataset with ground-truth material parameter attributes instead. Ground-truth parameters also avoid the noise that is inherent in perceptual experiment data. We show that existing neural networks can be trained on datasets with ground-truth material parameters and that they generate material edits of similar quality and that stay as close to the valid gamut of the trained material model as neural networks trained on perceptual material attributes. We expect that these results will encourage more study of the qualitative and quantitative differences between image-based material editing networks trained on material parameters and on perceptual attributes.

Research Object Crate (RO-Crate) is a lightweight method to package research outputs along with their metadata. Signposting provides a simple yet powerful approach to navigate scholarly objects on the Web. Combining these technologies form a “webby” implementation of the FAIR Digital Object principles which is suitable for retrofitting to existing data infrastructures or even for ad-hoc research objects using regular Web hosting platforms. Here we give an update of recent community development and adoption of RO-Crate and Signposting. It is notable that programmatic access and more detailed profiles have received high attention, as well as several FDO implementations that use RO-Crate

One of the biggest challenges in the transition to open science is making data interoperable. Ideally, existing schemas and vocabularies are (re-)used to describe data, but these are generally problematic for historical data, as they exclude historical concepts and are insensitive to temporal variations in meaning. Therefore, the subdiscipline of historical demography has designed its own schemas and vocabularies to standardize historical data, as researchers require them to make and study large-scale reconstructions of populations and life courses. We introduce a web environment called CLAIR-HD that helps researchers to find vocabularies to standardize historical demographic data, and determine lacunae in the standardization of data within the field of historical demography.

The FAIR principles have a significant and lasting impact on the way in which research is performed in the Digital Humanities. However, the FAIR principles have not yet significantly impacted the way in which research papers are published and disseminated. This paper describes a new approach towards academic publishing called ‘FAIR Paper’. A FAIR Paper is an academic publication that lives on the Web, uses open standards, and is completely reproducible. We report on our findings based on an early Proof-of-Concept implementation of the FAIR Paper concept.

In this paper, we study the academic impact of the CHIIR community through a comprehensive analysis of the work published in the 2016-2023 CHIIR conference series. We collect citation counts, citing documents, and altmetrics scores for all CHIIR publications to determine their academic impact across a variety of different attributes of the CHIIR publications. In addition, we analyze a subset of citation contexts in the papers that have cited CHIIR publications to analyze how they are being used and what that means for their potential impact. Finally, we attempt to predict which properties of CHIIR publications are most predictive of future impact.

Time and time again researchers are faced with the issue of choosing the most appropriate vocabulary for publishing archival data, particularly in the Semantic Web. Options range from most popular ones, such as schema.org, or more comprehensive ones such as CIDOC-CRM. There are pros and cons in each of them, but no guidelines on how to decide about it. This paper aims at providing some guidance based on an analysis of data at hand but also the requirements of data providers and users. For example, archives often refrain to add much interpretation by providing simple access to categorised documents with simple annotations such as person’s names or location names. Moreover, the archival data as well as its digitized versions may present subtleties, such as is the document original or has it been modified, simplified, copied or translated, which is often omitted. Therefore, depending on how much detailed information is actually accessible, but also what are the requirements of the data providers/users, the data can be ”placed” at different levels of content literacy/granularity and provenance. By having a clear understanding of the possibilities and limitations of each level, the choice of one or more vocabularies are down to the one(s) that should provide the necessary expressiveness. Naturally, choosing more than one vocabulary also requires some integration task.

In the face of changing climate and the increasing threats of flooding in low-lying Dutch polder landscapes, the demand for new development in adaptive residential architecture becomes crucial. This research explores the development of a lightweight amphibious building concept, designed to dynamically respond to changing water levels in the flood-prone wetlands of Groningen. The study delves into living with water typologies, construction techniques for amphibious buildings, and the utilization of paper and wood as a building material in lightweight constructions. The central hypothesis posits that a combination of a dynamic semi-floating foundation, coupled with paper as a sustainable and lightweight building material, offers new possibilities for future buildings in the floodplains of rivers. The research question addresses how buildings can effectively adapt to fluctuating water levels in Dutch polder landscapes through the incorporation of a lightweight biobased building construction and an adaptable dynamic floating foundation. The objective is to identify key elements by forming a series of design requirements for an amphibious building concept that tackles climate challenges by new construction techniques and biobased building materials. The thesis is carried out by a literature study of floating constructions and paper constructions, a precedents study and an experimenting phase through research by design.

A practical CV-QKD system has been presented and characterized. Our real-time GPU- based receiver (Bob) implementation demonstrates effective calibration, digital signal processing, and post- processing techniques. The system achieves peak finite-size secret key rates up to 5.8 Mbps over 12.8 km and 0.5 Mbps over a 25.7 km fiber distance. Additionally, we conducted a numerical simulation analysis to enhance the system’s resilience to quantum channel loss. Various scenarios were explored, focusing on potential improvements in excess noise, reconciliation efficiency, and quantum efficiency, aiming to extend distance tolerances beyond 50 km

To design agents capable of navigating sequential decision-making problems, it is essential to address the multi-objective nature of many real-world settings. We study agents operating in multi-objective problems while optimising for a known, but possibly non-linear, utility function. We extend the expert iteration framework, a technique combining reinforcement learning and planning, to multi-objective settings and demonstrate how to apply strong baselines such as AlphaZero and Gumbel AlphaZero, using a scalarisation scheme. As an alternative to direct scalarisation, we propose Distributional Search with Complex Objectives (DISCO), which extends the expert iteration framework to learn a distribution over vector returns. This distribution may subsequently be used during learning or to enable transfer to different utility functions after learning. Through experiments, we demonstrate that DISCO is competitive to the baselines while opening avenues for future research.

Many challenging tasks such as managing traffic systems, electricity grids, or supply chains involve complex decision-making processes that must balance multiple conflicting objectives and coordinate the actions of various independent decision-makers (DMs). One perspective for formalising and addressing such tasks is multi-objective multi-agent reinforcement learning (MOMARL). MOMARL broadens reinforcement learning (RL) to problems with multiple agents each needing to consider multiple objectives in their learning process. In reinforcement learning research, benchmarks are crucial in facilitating progress, evaluation, and reproducibility. The significance of benchmarks is underscored by the existence of numerous benchmark frameworks developed for various RL paradigms, including single-agent RL (e.g., Gymnasium), multi-agent RL (e.g., PettingZoo), and single-agent multi-objective RL (e.g., MO-Gymnasium). To support the advancement of the MOMARL field, we introduce MOMAland, the first collection of standardised environments for multi-objective multi-agent reinforcement learning. MOMAland addresses the need for comprehensive benchmarking in this emerging field, offering over 10 diverse environments that vary in the number of agents, state representations, reward structures, and utility considerations. To provide strong baselines for future research, MOMAland also includes algorithms capable of learning policies in such settings.

Aquest projecte presenta un estudi per a la implantació d'una planta industrial destinada a la producció de paper. L'objectiu principal és la construcció d'una nova nau que permeti dur a terme aquesta activitat de manera eficient i amb totes les garanties necessàries. El projecte parteix de l'anàlisi de les necessitats productives i presenta una descripció detallada dels espais necessaris per al complex industrial, incloent les dimensions i diverses opcions de distribució per optimitzar el procés productiu i el moviment de materials. També s'analitzen diferents ubicacions potencials per a la planta, basant-se en criteris logístics, econòmics i ambientals. Després de seleccionar la millor opció, es descriuen les seves característiques i es revisa la normativa urbanística vigent, proposant un disseny que s'ajusti als requisits legals. El treball inclou una revisió del marc normatiu aplicable, amb un èmfasi especial en els aspectes ambientals i industrials, així com un estudi de les mesures de seguretat contra incendis, d'acord amb la legislació específica per a aquest tipus d'instal·lacions. Finalment, s'ofereix una estimació dels costos associats a la construcció i posada en funcionament de la planta, acompanyada d'una breu anàlisi de les repercussions socials i ambientals del projecte, destacant-ne els beneficis potencials per a la comunitat i els possibles impactes ecològics.

My passion for art, paper and sustainability, combined with my desire to create objects, led me to explore the creation of my brand and studio, Paper Ink Notebooks Company. I studied and analyzed a wide range of international brands committed to creating sustainable products and established brands that rely on tradition to ignore change. I research materials of the future and explore how to transform the waste of a traditional product like leather into a new material. I also explored the transition from paper to digital as this is an inevitable change we will experience and part of the philosophy that will shape future brand products. The studio is designed to grow over time, covering products like printed illustrations (paper), art and fashion (ink), book editing, and notebooks (notebooks). Its focus will be designing circular products. The first product being The blue book. Notebooks created to elevate the art of fast renewable source paper and showcase the potential of up-cycling traditionally crafted material waste (Second skin). The prototypes were made by hand utilizing art processes that can be industrialized for mass production. This process allowed me to learn and explore the potential for creating a sustainable, vegan and compostable notebook that delivers high-quality paper for artists, writers and those who, like me, love paper., Award-winning

We present three novel parallel scan algorithms for multi-core CPUs which do not need to fix the number of available cores at the start, and have zero overhead compared to sequential scans when executed on a single core. These two properties are in contrast with most existing parallel scan algorithms, which are asymptotically optimal, but have a constant factor overhead compared to sequential scans when executed on a single core. We achieve these properties by adapting the classic three-phase scan algorithms. The resulting algorithms also exhibit better performance than the original ones on multiple cores. Furthermore, we adapt the chained scan with decoupled look-back algorithm to also have these two properties. While this algorithm was originally designed for GPUs, we show it is also suitable for multi-core CPUs, outperforming the classic three-phase scans in our benchmarks, by better using the caches of the processor at the cost of more synchronisation. In general our adaptive chained scan is the fastest parallel scan, but in specific situations our assisted reduce-then-scan is better.

We present work assisting, a novel scheduling strategy for mixing data parallelism (loop parallelism) with task parallelism, where threads share their current data-parallel activity in a shared array to let other threads assist. In contrast to most existing work in this space, our algorithm aims at preserving the structure of data parallelism instead of implementing all parallelism as task parallelism. This enables the use of self-scheduling for data parallelism, as required by certain data-parallel algorithms, and only exploits data parallelism if task parallelism is not sufficient. It provides full flexibility: neither the number of threads for a data-parallel loop nor the distribution over threads need to be fixed before the loop starts. We present benchmarks to demonstrate that our scheduling algorithm, depending on the problem, behaves similar to, or outperforms schedulers based purely on task parallelism.

Point cloud registration plays a crucial role in many applications, from robotics and autonomous navigation to medical imaging and 3D scene reconstruction. While the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm is a well-known shape registration choice, its efficiency and accuracy can be affected by the vast search space for point correspondences. k-means clustering emerges as a promising solution for partitioning the search space into smaller clusters to reduce the computational complexity and increase the performance of the matching. However, the number and size of these clusters and how they affect the registration remains a critical and yet not fully explored factor. This paper delves into the relationship between the number of k-means clusters and point cloud registration accuracy. To determine the effect of the number of k-means clusters on registration accuracy and efficiency and to understand any emerging pattern, k-meansICP is developed to use the k-means algorithm to cluster the correspondence search space. Two sets of 3D molecular shapes with differing complexities are matched using initial rotation angles 15, 30, and 60 degrees with 2 to 10 k-means clusters. The results are then compared with the original ICP algorithm.

In this paper, we introduce the notion of beaver-play to understand play that challenges spatial conventions, transgresses boundaries, and redraws territories. Tracing how beavers are imagined in various contexts such as nature conservation, experimental rewilding practices, and performance art, we highlight the role of the beaver in stories of ecosystem management, collapse, and restoration. We investigate beaver imaginaries through the perspective of play and games, taking the popular city-building video game Timberborn as our case study. We employ sketching as a method to annotate and analyse play practices in the digital spaces of Timberborn, drawing out three modes of beaver-play: concerns, crossings, and flows. Highlighting the role of play in territorial and organisational fluidity, we draw attention to the way that beaver-play scaffolds moving in and out of spatial arrangements, territories and environmental systems. Discussing how the practices of playing and drawing intertwined into a process of more-than-human cartography, we extend our investigation to consider the broader implications of using video games as cartographic, performative spaces for more-than-human meaning-making.

We study the subtrajectory clustering problem. Given a trajectory $T$, the goal is to identify a set of subtrajectories such that each point on $T$ is included in at least one subtrajectory, and subsequently group these subtrajectories together based on similarity under the Fréchet distance. We wish to minimize the set of groups. This problem was shown to be NP-complete by Akitaya, Brüning, Chambers, and Driemel (2021), and the focus has mainly been on approximation algorithms. We study a restricted variant, where we may only pick subtrajectories that start and end at vertices of $T$, and give an approximation algorithm that significantly improves previous algorithms in both running time and space, whilst being deterministic.

To understand how scientific institutions communicate about ocean climate change and ocean plastic research, 323 press releases published between 2017 and 2022 were analyzed. A clustering method revealed 4 ocean climate change- and 5 ocean plastic frames that were analyzed qualitatively. Ocean plastic was presented as a biological and health issue, placing an emphasis on solutions and society’s obligation to implement them. Ocean climate change was framed as environmental and socio-economic problem, highlighting politics’ responsibility for mitigation. Narratives were only used to personify science and represent scientists, indicating that future press releases could include more social dimensions to engage audiences in ocean issues.

The Dutch East India Company (VOC) encountered many new concepts when they set up permanent connections of trade between Europe and Asia from 1602 to 1798. To describe these new flora, fauna, social concepts and economic activities they borrowed words from the languages around them. One way of identifying such loanwords is through finding occurrences of 'glossing', cases where a word is explained by the author to the audience using a word like 'of' (Dutch)/'or' (English). The resulting data can indicate what words were understood to be 'foreign' by the author and/or the perceived audience, and the explanations they gave for those terms gives an insight in the (changing) Dutch understanding of the early modern Asian world.

Surprise is integral to driving creativity and innovation in design. While design research has mainly adopted a product-centered perspective to explore surprise as an emotional user response, the intricate involvement of surprise in the design process itself remains underexplored. Studies in cognitive psychology show that a comprehensive understanding of surprise must also encompass its detection, management, potential for errors, and influence on the behavior of individuals and groups. On this basis, the paper contributes a state-of-the-art literature review of two decades of design research to explore the complex functions of surprise in design processes. The paper discusses key emergent themes, including the continued relevance of Schön’s work, surprise-related error, the entwinement of process and product, and surprise in designer-AI collaboration. The paper suggests future research to enhance our limited understanding of the functions of surprise in design processes.

Förutom produktskydd är estetiken i förpackningen avgörande för att säkerställa produktförsäljningen. För många produkter, särskilt livsmedelsprodukter, vill köparen veta vad de köper och vill se produkten. För att göra detta krävs ofta förpackningstransparens eftersom det möjliggör synlighet samtidigt som det skyddar produkten. För närvarande är petroleum-baserade plaster de mest använda materialen för detta ändamål på grund av deras lätthet och barriäregenskaper. Cellulosaförpackning blir sedan icke-återvinnbar på grund av plastfönster avsedda enbart för marknadsföringsändamål, vilket är en stor fråga för de miljöegenskaper hos förpackningar som nu krävs. För att råda bot på detta finns redan lösningar på marknaden med genomskinligt papper som sedan kan garantera återvinnbarheten av förpackningarna som använder dem. Men denna typ av material produceras och används bara i Europa för tillfället och ingen aktör har ännu positionerat sig på den nordamerikanska marknaden. Syftet med detta projekt är därför att utveckla en lösning för denna marknad, särskilt i Quebec och Kanada. Det huvudsakliga målet med detta projekt är att utveckla en transparent cellulosafilm med höga barriärer samtidigt som den förblir komposterbar, återvinningsbar inom pappersindustrin och biobaserad. En stor fördel är att cellulosa redan är transparent. Det enda problemet kommer från porositeten inuti papperet som gör det vitt genom att sprida ljuset. Besides product protection, the aesthetics of packaging remain essential to ensure product sales. For many products, particularly food products, the buyer wants to know what they are purchasing and wants to see the product. To do this, packaging transparency is often required as it allows visibility while protecting the product. Currently, petroleum-based plastics are the most used materials for this purpose due to their lightness and barrier properties. Cellulosic packaging then becomes non-recyclable due to plastic windows intended solely for marketing uses. This is a major issue for the environmental properties of packaging that are now required. To remedy this, solutions already exist on the market with translucent paper that can then guarantee the packaging recyclability using them. However, this material is produced and used only in Europe at the moment and no player has yet positioned itself on the North American market. The aim of this project is therefore to develop a solution for this market, particularly in Quebec and Canada. The main objective of this project is to develop a transparent cellulosic film with high barriers while remaining compostable, recyclable in the paper industry, and biobased. A great advantage is that cellulose is already transparent. The only issue comes from the porosity inside the paper, making it white by diffusing the light. To meet these objectives, two approaches are studied: coating, to fill the paper’s pores and thus make it transparent, and calendering, to close these pores and promote interactions between the fibres. The study will take place at two scales: the laboratory and the pilot plant. A method of manufacturing transparent paper will first be developed at the laboratory scale. This paper stems from a reflection on the state of the practice of the use of architecture knowledge especially within the Dutch public and semi-public sector. We have observed that publication of architecture knowledge in semantic wikis has helped organize the semi-structured nature of that knowledge as combinations of text and model elements, and has enabled sharing and connecting knowledge that typically lives within individual model repositories. Increasingly, however, we encounter the desire and need to make architectural knowledge break out of their isolated repositories. From several examples that illustrate this desire, this position paper argues that a next step in architecture knowledge management entails the use of linked data principles and techniques to construct an ‘Architecture Knowledge Graph’.

In response to the challenges associated with the adoption of distributed decision-making systems (DDMS) in the context of modern power grids, particularly concerning the integration of distributed energy resources (DER) and increasing demand, this research introduces an innovative framework grounded in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). The proposed framework aims to enhance DDMS by incorporating secure and standardized edge computing to streamline data retrieval and local computation, thereby achieving optimal efficiency. Through authentication, authorization, and data loss prevention measures, the proposed framework guarantees a secure data exchange. In addition, it integrates the Common Information Model (CIM) and an ontology to standardize the flow of data, improving interoperability in heterogeneous systems. This study provides a concise overview of the proposed architecture, emphasizing its adaptability and efficiency in addressing contemporary issues in DDMS. In addition, an illustrative use case will be investigated to demonstrate the potential of the proposed architecture and its intricate interactions.
