This recommendation is devoted to testing the resistance of natural stone and fired-clay brick units against salt crystallization. The procedure was developed by the RILEM TC 271-ASC to evaluate the durability of porous building materials against salt crystallization through a laboratory method that allows for accelerated testing without compromising the reliability of the results. The new procedure is designed to replicate salt damage caused by crystallization near the surface of materials as a result of capillary transport and evaporation. A new approach is proposed that considers the presence of two stages in the salt crystallization test. In the first, the accumulation stage, salts gradually accumulate on or near the surface of the material due to evaporation. In the second, the propagation stage, damage initiates and develops due to changes in moisture content and relative humidity that trigger salt dissolution and crystallization cycles. To achieve this, two types of salt were tested, namely sodium chloride and sodium sulphate, with each salt tested separately. A methodology for assessing the salt-induced damage is proposed, which includes visual and photographical observations and measurement of material loss. The procedure has been preliminarily validated in round robin tests.

New discoveries and their applications have taken place in different fields, such as electronics, chemistry, biology and physics. Some innovative nanoproducts have become available also for the conservation of cultural heritage (e.g. nano-Ca(OH)2, nano-SiO2, nano-TiO2, CNTs, etc.), showing interesting potentialities and advantages. However, there are also drawbacks. Extensive literature is available on nanolimes, i.e. colloidal alcoholic dispersions of Ca(OH)2 nanoparticles, which are promising materials for the consolidation of lime-based plasters and calcareous stone, often present in ancient masonry structures. Nanolimes have several advantages such as high stability, fast carbonation rate and good chemical and physical compatibility with calcareous stone and lime-based plasters. However, in comparison to other existing consolidant products, like TEOS-based (Tetraethylorthosilicate), the penetration depth of nanolime is often limited, which may consequently result in a low effectiveness. The research presented in this paper aimed at understanding the penetration and deposition process of nanolime when applied in Maastricht limestone, a soft, highly porous substrate, widely used in the Dutch and Belgian provinces of Limburg. This research focused on the nanolime transport process to clarify whether nanolime is able to penetrate and deposit in depth in the material or if it simply accumulates near the surface. In order to investigate the distribution and particle size of nanolime deposited in the stone, next to simple phenolphthalein tests, optical microscopy, AFM and SEM-EDS were used. On the basis of the obtained results, the transport and deposition of a commercial nanolime in Maastricht limestone has been elucidated. San Jeronimo Monastery (Granada, Spain) was selected as a case study for the investigation of the effect of indoor environmental conditions on salt weathering and for on-site testing of a remediation treatment using crystallization inhibitors on account of the extreme salt damage affecting both the building stone, a biomicritic limestone, calcarenite and wall paintings. A methodology combining several analysis techniques, phenomenological observations, salt and moisture analysis, environmental monitoring and thermodynamic simulations, was adopted in order to study the salt damage problems affecting this building. Within the collected samples, the majority of salts were found to be magnesium sulphate in the form of either hexahydrite or epsomite, depending on the climate conditions, together with minor amounts of gypsum, nitrates and chlorides. Comparison of empirical observations with thermodynamic simulations of the salt mixture behaviour clearly showed that salt-induced damage events take place during the seasonal changes from spring to summer and winter to spring. An aqueous solution of an organic phosphonate, which in laboratory experiments was found to be an effective inhibitor of magnesium sulphate crystallization, was sprayed over a selected test area of unpainted stonework at the site. Preliminary results seem to indicate that after the application of the treatment both the amount of efflorescence and ongoing damage to the stone support is reduced. However, long-term monitoring of the future condition of the test area is needed to confirm whether indeed this treatment is appropriate and effective in reducing salt damage at this case study site. By means of a questionnaire a study was carried out to investigate the perception of small scale damage and repairs of natural stone used in buildings. Participants were asked to evaluate damage to natural stone shown on pictures. They were also asked to give their opinion on interventions needed to preserve or restore the material. Significant differences can be found between specialists and non-specialists in conservation. Respondents consider some cases as “damage” situations, even though no intervention is deemed as necessary, as if damage was a sort of natural weathering, thus to be expected and accepted. In other cases, also defined as “‘damage” situations, interventions are considered necessary. This seems to imply the use of a different criterion to define “damage”, maybe including the expected risks related to its development. This study contributes to the definition of damage, and to a better understanding of the criteria used by different people to decide on the need of interventions., Building Conservation, Architecture
