In the wake of combined economic and ecological pressure, Prairie farmers and the Canadian ministries responsible for agriculture are pressed to instigate sustainable agricultural development. However, Canada’s central agri-environmental program, the Environmental Farm Planning program (EFP), faces low uptake in the Prairie region. In this thesis, I explore the nature of the dissonance between the EFP and Prairie farmers to understand why participation is so low, the issues embedded in the EFP, and how to develop better agri-environmental policy for the Prairie region. I employ multiple methods, including survey, discourse, and institutional analyses, to make sense of the dissonance. Survey analysis is used to explore the social psychology of risk and characterize participant’s knowledge, risk perceptions, and trust regarding environmental action. Next, I employ discourse analysis to examine taken-for-granted notions embedded in how interviewees articulate their relationship to themselves, society, the environment, and the state. Finally, I utilize an institutional analysis to look at the mechanisms and values built into the EFP and the Prairie context and theorize how these institutional factors affect the EFP dissonance. Using the process of triangulation, I mix my methods to conclude that risk perceptions, economic constraints, and governmental trust are at the core of the EFP dissonance.

Knowledge of growing season thermal units is essential for effective selection of corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids that can reach maturity within the short growing season on the Canadian Prairies. It is important to have adequate information about occurrence of phenological stages of corn so as to make effective management decision on seeding dates, chemical and fertilizer applications and anticipating harvest date. Therefore, a consistent index would aid with effective selection of corn hybrids for a given area. This study showed that the variation in the accumulation of the general thermal index (GTI) was consistently lower than that for the corn heat unit (CHU) but was not significant. The study also showed no significant differences in thermal heat unit accumulation required to reach physiological maturity by five corn hybrids with CHU ratings ranging from 2200 to 2700. The relative maturity (RM) rating determined by seed industries all showed a close relationship (r=0.75-0.99) with CHU rating. Therefore, the use of either tool would have similar results and thus RM would not be effective for selecting corn hybrids on the Canadian Prairies. There was an inverse relationship between cold night hours accumulated during the growing season and accumulated CHU from planting to maturity but no relationship between cold night hours and accumulated GTI. The GTI was not affected by cold night temperatures since the index calculation continues to accumulate thermal units at temperatures near 0°C. The relationship observed suggests that the current climate change trend for increasingly warmer overnight temperatures will also increase the number of CHU accumulated by corn hybrids from planting to maturity. The GTI showed an indication for accurate use as an alternative tool to CHU for selecting grain corn hybrids on the Canadian Prairies.

Cattle are responsible for the deterioration of aquatic and riparian ecosystems throughout the North American prairies. Marked preference for riparian areas has resulted in vegetation loss, stream bank destabilization, changes in sediment particle size, and increased nutrient loads in the streams. A grazing experiment in Grasslands National Park of Canada manipulated the density of cattle to represent a range of grazing intensities (from no grazing to very heavy grazing, 70% forage utilization). This experiment provided the opportunity to study how streams in the semi-arid mixed-grass prairie environment respond to a range of grazing pressure. Nine experimental pastures located on previously ungrazed land within the park boundary and four located within the adjacent community pastures were created, each subjected to a specified grazing treatment. Sampling occurred in the autumn from 2007 to 2009 and included the measurement of 33 physical, chemical, and biological habitat metrics and the characterization of the aquatic invertebrate community. Linear regressions were performed to determine if the habitat variables had a significant relationship to grazing intensity (P < 0.05). Of the habitat variables, two sediment particle size categories were significantly related to grazing intensity: per cent of fine gravel (4-8 mm diameter) (P =0.003) and per cent of medium gravel (8-16 mm diameter) (P = 0.007). The only other habitat variable with a significant linear relationship to grazing intensity was the concentration of suspended carbon in the stream water (P = 0.050). Three invertebrate community metrics were focused on for their expected response to changes associated with cattle impacts: iii per cent Chironomidae (%Chiron), per cent Ephemeroptera, Odonata, and Trichoptera (%EOT), and taxa richness. There was a significant non-linear relationship between %Chiron (P = 0.005) and grazing intensity, no linear or non-linear relationship between %EOT and grazing intensity, a

The black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) is a burrowing rodent native to the Great Plains currently experiencing large population declines. It is debated whether prairie dogs are keystone species; however, areas with prairie dogs have higher levels of biodiversity and presumably increased biotic interactions. The goal of this study is to quantify the importance of black-tailed prairie dogs, hereafter prairie dog, by comparing abundance and diversity of raptors and small mammals on prairie dog (PD) and non-prairie dog (NON) inhabited prairie. A significant difference was detected between the two treatments (PD and NON) in the number of raptors counts; the PD treatment observed a greater abundance of individuals (n = 192) in contrast to the NON treatment (n = 115). Small mammal richness was low with only the following species detected on each treatment; 2 species (Onychomys leucogaster and Ictidomys tridecemlineatus) on the PD treatment and 5 species (Chaetodipus hispidus, Onychomys leucogaster, Perognathus flavus, Peromyscus maniculatus, and Reithrodontomys montanus) on the NON treatment. Although I did not detect abundance or all species caught in both treatments, other studies have reported higher abundances of small mammals, including Onychomys leucogaster, on prairie dog inhabited land. These data have the potential to influence prairie dog conservation efforts, as well as our knowledge of other vertebrate prairie-specialist species. Species in need of conservation, including ferruginous hawk (Buteo regalis) and burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia), rely on prairie dogs for food, shelter, or nesting sites. These species and others will be forced elsewhere as prairie dog distribution continues to decrease, and might be pushed out of their historical distribution, or towards extinction. In The American West Transformed: The Impact of the Second World War, noted historian Gerald D. Nash argued that the war, more than any other event in the West's history, completely altered that region.1 There is as yet no equivalent of Nash's fine study for the Great Plains north of the forty-ninth parallel, or what Canadians call the "prairies."2 This gap notwithstanding, historians of western Canada have begun to explore at least one key aspect of Nash's research: the war's impact on cities. Since 1995 there have been three histories of urban centers in wartime: Red Deer (Alberta), Lethbridge (Alberta), and Regina (Saskatchewan).3 However, these previous studies pay insufficient attention to the impact of "patriotism," a curious omission given how frequently both government officials and ordinary citizens used their love of country as a rallying cry. In this article I focus on Saskatoon, whose 43,027 inhabitants made it Saskatchewan's second-largest city, and examine the way in which patriotism was nourished in the collective mind by several war-related events in the city.4 Through what may be called the patriotic imagination, the war was made intense and immediate to prairie dwellers far removed from its conflict zones.5

The goals of this project were first to investigate farming methods that provided a good standard of living, reasonable financial returns, and a healthy environment and community. The second goal was to identify the organizational barriers to adoption of a sustainable agricultural system. I sought this knowledge in the role of an activist and as a farmer interested in making a quality life. Throughout this research, I spoke with many people who grow food and steward the land for a variety of reasons. I discovered that most people are interested in farming as a lifestyle with a wealth of personal benefits, even if they are not the most financially feasible operations. Farmers displayed a real interest in caring for the land that supports them, and for the quality of their communities. This thesis concludes with a variety of recommendations for both producers as well as the governments who represent them.

Dans le cadre de l'AECN95, ce projet s'inscrit dans un triptyque constitué par ailleurs d'une convention sur les écotypes (GAC95/12) et d'une convention sur l'intégration des espaces verts en zone industrielle (GAC 95/13). Le travail ici confié au laboratoire d'Ecologie des Prairies de l'UCL, vise à réaliser une étude de faisabilité concernant l'installation/reconstruction de couverts herbacés biodiversifiés sur les bords de route, les zonings industriels, certains jardins privés, les prairies et autres opportunités situées en zones non agricoles. Le travail couvre essentiellement les 3 points suivants: - Etude du sol: détermination des facteurs limitants de la reconstruction. Une attention particulière est accordée à la teneur du sol en phosphore assimilable; - Etude botanique: détermination des espèces végétales stratégiques à utiliser en fonction des conditions pédologiques. Ce volet est surtout axé sur la détermination, à la fois en laboratoire et sur le terrain, des conditions de germination de ces espèces (t°, humidité, sous couvert ou non, date du semis, moyens de lever d'éventuelles dormances, etc.); - définition des pratiques de gestion susceptibles de stimuler la reconstruction (spontanée ou non,) ou de maintenir les couverts riches en espèces (régime de coupes). Dans la présente étude, 80 stations situées en bordure de route ont été investiguées tant du point de vue pédologique que botanique. Ces stations sont réparties dans 4 régions agricoles: l'Ardenne, la Famenne, le Condroz et la Région limoneuse. Ce travail rejoint parfaitement les objectifs de l'Année Européenne de la Conservation de la Nature, qui veut privilégier des réalisations favorables à la vie sauvage en dehors des réserves naturelles. The objective of this research was to assess the potential effects of global warming on the hydrology and vegetation in semi-permanent wetlands located in the glaciated prairie region of North Dakota. As a means to that objective, a spatially-defined simulation model of the vegetation dynamics in these wetlands was constructed. A hydrologic component of the model estimated water levels based on precipitation, runoff, potential evaporation and transpiration. Amount and distribution of emergent cover and open water were modeled using a geographical information system. Vegetation response to changes in water level was based on seed bank composition, seedling recruitment, establishment and plant survivorship. Simulation results were compared to actual distributions from aerial photographs (1979-89). Results showed that the model was relatively good at calculating changes in water level for average years. Late-summer water levels were overestimated during dry years due to limitations in the Thornthwaite method of calculating potential evapotranspiration. In general, changes in the ratio of emergent cover to open water were accurately simulated. Tests of the model elucidated two areas that needed improvement. First, seedlings germinated too quickly on exposed mudflats in the model when drawdown occurred late in the season. The actual wetland had a thick mat of dried, submergent vegetation on top of the mudflats which impeded germination, which the model did not consider. Second, model conversions between open water and deep marsh vegetation were not always timed correctly. If water depth crossed a threshold value for a given period of time a cell would change its type. In reality, tolerance of emergents to deep water is more complex. A probability function with respect to time and water depth rather than a threshold value would better represent this relationship.
