One of the most dangerous environmental factors is noise, which is crucial to control. This research aims to determine the differences in silencer media thickness between patchwork and plywood offsets to reduce noise intensity in cutting yarn engines. The method study characteristic experiment with design research conducted in this study used a design pretest-posttest without control. The population in this study is the whole room production source producing intensity noise by PT Trisula Textile Industries. Sample in the study This machine is cutting yarn, which produces the most noise. Purposive sampling is the technique used to conduct sample studies. e in six repetitions, with 36 temperature and moisture measurements. The measurement of the intensity of noise at the source of noise before being given treatment ranged from 97.26 to 97.43. The results of the decline in noise intensity after a given silencer show that variation 1 decreased the average by 5.66%, variation 2 decreased the average by 8.89%, and variation 3 lowered the average by 11.89% dB. We processed the data using the one-way ANOVA test, and the results showed a P value of 0.0001 (significant), which is less than 0.05, which indicates a significant difference in each variation of thickness. Industry can use thicker plywood thickness boards if applied in areas with a higher noise level and install a wheel on a tool reducer that can be used practically. Chapters one through five cover the history, function, qualities, and variations of bojagi textiles and their cultural importance to society, particularly women. Traditionally, women played a large role in the making of bojagi, which is why this paper will explore the societal expectations of women in Korea during the Joseon dynasty. To fully grasp the cultural context of bojagi textiles, this paper will briefly cover Korea's history from the ancient Three Kingdoms Period to the end of the Japanese occupation period. In this paper, topics covered include trade, cultivation of fibers, synthetic dyes, and global history from the late-nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. Lastly, chapters six through eight will cover the condition and treatment of the jogakbo-bojagi, as well as final conclusions and dating of the object.

I find several compelling parallels between the human and plant realms, particularly in relation to place and identity. Refreshing insights, questions, and perspectives have arisen for me in my reflections on the history and ecosystems of Hawaiʻi, my own identity, and my work. I am interested in how we construct and deconstruct individual identities within the context of a larger society. As human beings, we shift, adapt, resist, or embrace the various influences within the social, cultural and natural ecosystems in which we live. We invent and reorganize ourselves continuously as we move through time and space. I associate this journey of finding and fitting the pieces of ourselves together with patchwork — articulating and finding meaning in the patterns, textures, and salvageable pieces of our identities. Like plants, we live in transformation. I use a variety of natural fibers in my work, including wool, silk, and wauke (Broussonetia papyrifera). While I honor traditions from the past (harvesting and beating bark and hand-felting wool are among the oldest of fiber craft forms), I also experiment with new methods as a way of expressing my own, authentic voice. My current work straddles the lines between craft and fine art, representation and abstraction, and conceptual vocabularies that merge artistic traditions related to my biological origins: African American patchwork quilting and Finnish felting with tapa (bark cloth) and artistic traditions from Hawaiʻi.

Social life in a modern city is conditioned by long-established traditions, cultural codes, and patterns of human behavior. Such aspects will be individual for almost any city since their formation takes place over long periods. A similar activator of social life in London is the beer culture – a complex ritual chain that has lost one of the most important constituent element – the brewery as a typology. As a result, the brewery lost its architectural identity and its place of honor in the city. The central issue addressed in this study is the search for the reasons why the brewery typology has lost its architectural identity in recent years and whether it is possible to rethink the identity of the typology as an approach to design. The number of new London breweries is growing inexorably. Over the past ten years, it has increased more than ten times, which indicates that the beer culture has experienced a new understanding, and broader demand for the consumption of this product has formed in society. However, due to the comparative youth of the new format and approach to beer culture and its economic uncertainty, it has not yet been architecturally formed. Hence, it exists in a format of technological adaptation rather than an independent typology. The primary method in the study is the analysis of historical and cultural analogs, and as a result, their comparison with the brewery in different qualities, such as typology, program, function, urban fabric, etc. Using this induction method, we get the necessary conclusions, which are subsequently transformed into specific architectural approaches and rules required to create a new identity of the brewery typology and a new fragment of the urban fabric in heterogeneous London., Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences | Architectural Design Crossovers

Textile waste, both pre and post consumer, is a problem that needs a solution, and fast. This work aims to find a simple solution to that problem, to exemplify how a small change in thinking and structures can make a big difference. The proposal is a design system of square construction, with roots in historical fabric conservancy practices and by use of salvage craft techniques. By constructing garments out of squares, waste is eliminated by simple means and existing materials of different qualities can be cut in the same way, thereby rationalized, then assembled into larger materials and so an up cycling process is achieved. The result of this work is a versatile design system which may lead to many different outcomes in the hands of different designers without compromising on desired fit and without the waste generated from cutting conventionally. In the present fashion field solutions such as this system are necessary to encourage the apprehensive designer to take steps towards sustainable practices.

How might design museums be dis-entangled from oppressives tructures? And how might they even take part in creating more just futures? This is an invitation to one moment in two sessions in which we will explore these questions. We will patchwork (Lindström & Ståhl, 2014) what we have experienced and what we would like to experience in, with or through design museums. Exploring our own memories can be a way to try to grasp what is often invisible and in the background: systems like hetero patriarchy and white supremacy that the design discipline and its museums are intertwined with (Buckley, 2020; Costanza-Chock, 2020). Based on and inspired by our findings, and through combining ethnography, fiction and participatory design (Ingridsdotter & Kallenberg, 2018; Blomberg & Karasti, 2013), we will place ourselves in what could be an alternative design museum and embark on a fictional guided tour through its rooms., This workshop was developed as part of my PhD research project, and hosted at the online DRS Festival of Emergence on 9 September 2021, 13:00 CEST. Some people experience music as colourful patterns or feel it as a physical touch, they have synesthesia. A neurological condition in which a stimulus of one sense automatically and involuntarily triggers a sensation in another sense. This shows that perception is not normative. The aim of this work is to try to develop an understanding of this phenomenon by using textile dyeing and patchwork as a tool for my investigation of it. Another aim is to raise awareness and try to see if it is possible for a non synesthete to experience something similar to the complex intersensory connections as those with synesthesia have. The sum of all perceptions of a human, after it has been processed by their own mind, can result in something that is not just the sum of each individual perception, but something that can at the end be quite different from what might be expected. This motivated the title, and furthermore leads naturally into the Gestalt theory of perception, which is used as the major theoretical framework for this paper.

Department: Fashion and Textile Studies: History, Theory, Museum Practice., Advisors: Kelly, Rebecca., Patchwork was an important textile trend in the late 1960s, reflecting the self-suffiency and handcraft ideals of the influential hippie movement. Haute Couture designers were not out of the reach of these trends. In his spring/summer 1969 collection, Yves Saint Laurent featured several patchwork garments, including silk patchwork evening dresses. Other young designers were also experimenting with a variety of handcraft techniques in their collections. However, these techniques had been perfected by others for generations. When a few women from the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia noticed the fashion taste for patchwork and appliqué, they capitalized on the trend to help their own poverty-stricken community. One woman realized that fashion garments were faster to make, required fewer resources upfront, and fetched higher returns than traditional quilts. Mountain Artisans began by making hostess skirts, but throughout the maker's tenure they branched into home furnishings, mini-skirts, midi-skirts, pants, blouses, jackets, tennis dresses and racquet covers, evening wear, bridal clothes, tote bags, and quilted toys for children. Mountain Artisans had a mission larger than just creating a profit; they were giving people who were willing to work hard the opportunity to do so. The brand started as a non-profit cooperative to provide living wages to needle workers. Although Mountain Artisans only survived for the better part of a decade, in that short time they helped over 300 women support their families in a meaningful way and stimulated the economy in struggling area.

[EN] Patchwork (2018) is at the same time an animated documentary and a fictional short film, directed by María Manero about her mum life experience: Loly, a 60 years old housewife and mother. It is an ambitious Master Degree Project made at the M.A. of Universitat Politècnica de València, in a collaboration with Abano Producións, a wellknown producer winner of a Goya Award during 2017 based on Galicia, Spain. With its original visuals and achieving a profound human renewal, Patchwork tries to not just concern about human transplants but also to make people aware of reusing scraping materials, and it proposes a particular form of poetry — not very common in animation. This project was involved in a stimulating crowdfunding campaign in collaboration with the NGO Fundación Imaginario Social and was delivered in a science symposium. To Assemble and Stitch a Research Dissertation When I learnt the art of patchwork quilting, the elderly teacher bemoaned the need to hold a quilt together with stitches. The joy in quilting, she explained, stems from a delight in fabrics, colours and the quilt design. She joked that were it possible to 'whack a quilt together' with glue, it would be preferable to the labour-intense process of assembly by stitching. However, to 'short-cut' the assembly process would not produce a quilt likely to be appreciated for its beauty, stability or warmth. I extend this notion to the doctoral thesis process.

Australia's legal arrangements for the protection of human rights have been described by rights activists as an 'intricate patch work'. Ironically, the most noteworthy feature of this 'patchwork' is not what it contains, but what it lacks, a bill of rights (BOR). The failure of national governments over decades to remedy this situation is the focus of this thesis. This thesis argues that, until a bill of rights is enacted, the capacity of all Australians to enjoy their human rights will remain diminished. This thesis aims to contribute to overcoming Australia's entrenched impasse about a BOR in two ways. First, it explains why despite periodic 'movements' during periods of Australian Labor Party governments since the 1970's, no bill of rights campaign has come to fruition. The chief explanation for these rejections is that a bill of rights would threaten the sovereignty and supremacy of the Australian Parliament. Second, by comparative examination of the experience of New Zealand, which enacted a 'Commonwealth model' statutory bill of rights in 1990, this thesis challenges the veracity of this dominant view in Australian politics. This thesis concludes, that the enactment of a Human Rights Act that is, a statutory bill of rights, that does not diminish parliamentary supremacy, is a necessary next step in fulfillment of Australia's obligation to respect the human rights of all Australians.

Objects can evoke our most vivid memories and sensory emotions, through the stories that have been engraved into them across their lifetime. Throughout history, patchwork-quilting has been used to tell stories, hide messages and hold histories. They are seen as objects of warmth, comfort and security, inanimate extensions of ourselves that store our most complex sentiments and memories- becoming heirlooms that are kept in the families and communities for generations, preserving our histories and material culture. I intend to explore the inseparable relationship between craft and narrative within quilts, whilst re-imagining the quilts forms and functions in order to communicate stories more vividly. To do so I will use my memories of My Dead Dog, Henry, to illustrate narratives and embed them into quilted objects to stage as a tableau of artifacts. Under projektet ”Att brodera är ett verb –Betraktelser ur ett nålsöga” har jag använt applikationsbroderi som teknik för att transformera och bearbeta material från min omgivning. Jag har sorterat alla material efter färgcirkeln och skapat rutor som jag satt ihop till ett abstraherat lapptäcke. Arbetet har syftat till att undersöka processbaserat görande och jag har därför tagit hjälp av verben i konstnären Richard Serras ”Verb list”. Jag har satt upp fyra regler för mig själv att förhålla mig till under arbetets gång. Med reglerna har jag velat eliminera alla val och processer som inte handlar om själva görandet i sig. Lapptäcket har tagit sin slutliga form utifrån det ramverk som reglerna utgjort. Under min opponering diskuterade jag och opponenten Karin Lundgren-Tallinger främst hur jag har förhållit mig till mina regler under arbetets gång och hur de hade kunnat vara tydligare. Till Konstfacks Vårutställning hängde jag upp lapptäcket på en ställning av skrot i ett hörn och spred ut vissa rutor och andra obearbetade material så som skräp och garner i flera delar av rummet. Installationen av verket gjorde jag för att skapa en känsla av att arbetet med rutorna när som helst skulle kunna återupptas och görandet forsätta.

In this text I am investigating the relationship between craft, fine art and kitsch/popular culture through the making of a three-dimensional pattern in patchwork technique. I apply the investigation to my working technique by comparing certain examples of fine art pieces with kitsch items. A method that during the process was named Versus Associations. I have connected the art pieces and kitsch items through this method of associations based on their similarities in colors and composition. The aim of the pattern is to mediate color interactions that make up a visual illusion. I want to make the beholders curious of what is happening in the pattern and show that it can affect them physically., Due to copyright some pictures has been removed. This paper presents a patchwork-based audio watermarking method to resist de-synchronization attacks such as pitch-scaling, time-scaling, and jitter attacks. At the embedding stage, the watermarks are embedded into the host audio signal in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain. Then, a set of synchronization bits are implanted into the watermarked signal in the logarithmic DCT (LDCT) domain. At the decoding stage, we analyze the received audio signal in the LDCT domain to find the scaling factor imposed by an attack. Then, we modify the received signal to remove the scaling effect, together with the embedded synchronization bits. After that, watermarks are extracted from the modified signal. Simulation results show that at the embedding rate of 10 bps, the proposed method achieves 98.9% detection rate on average under the considered de-synchronization attacks. At the embedding rate of 16 bps, it can still obtain 94.7% detection rate on average. So, the proposed method is much more robust to de-synchronization attacks than other patchwork watermarking methods. Compared with the audio watermarking methods designed for tackling de-synchronization attacks, our method has much higher embedding capacity. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper presents a patchwork-based watermarking method for stereo audio signals, which exploits the similarity of the two sound channels of stereo signals. Given a segment of stereo signal, we first compute the discrete Fourier transforms (DFTs) of the two sound channels, which yields two sets of DFT coefficients. The DFT coefficients corresponding to certain frequency range are divided into multiple subsegment pairs and a criterion is proposed to select those suitable for watermark embedding. Then a watermark is embedded into the selected subsegment pairs by modifying their DFT coefficients. The exact way of modification is determined by a secret key, the watermark to be embedded, and the DFT coefficients themselves. In the decoding process, the subsegment pairs containing watermarks are identified by another criterion. Then the secret key is used to extract the watermark from the watermarked subsegments. Compared to the existing patchwork methods for audio watermarking, the proposed method does not require knowledge of which segments of the watermarked audio signal contain watermarks and is more robust to conventional attacks.

This paper addresses accountability in academic and artistic writing. We use the narrative position of the patchwork to tell stories of the travelling exhibition Threads - A Mobile Sewing Circle. This particular narrative position is chosen as it can handle fragments, as well as multiple voices and perspectives, while still being held together. In addition, we argue that Threads is similar to the practice and object of patchwork. It comes into existence through processes of exclusion and inclusion of connections, alliances, and separations – through putting things in relation to one another.

Claire Lejeune’s works are extremely complex both in aesthetic and thematic. Her style is ambiguous and fascinating, producing an ensemble of books that are intimate related by a common philosophical and poetic discourse. The writer has used the narrative technique of patchwork to explore the limits of the texts and she has produced an enormous saga of essays. They create the illusion of an artisan work always revised and continually reformed. Lejeune has become a kind of post-modern Penelope or a new Arachne who tries to subvert the solid statements of the occidental canon of literary essay. By changing this genre, she has produced a sui generis style., L’esthétique et la thématique des oeuvres de Claire Lejeune créent l’effet d’une écriture de grande complexité, cryptique et fascinante. This thesis investigates how an autonomous reinforcement learning agent can improve on an approximate solution by augmenting it with a small patch, which overrides the approximate solution at certain states of the problem. In reinforcement learning, many approximate solutions are smaller and easier to produce than “flat” solutions that maintain distinct parameters for each fully enumerated state, but the best solution within the constraints of the approximation may fall well short of global optimality. This thesis proposes that the remaining gap to global optimality can be efficiently minimised by learning a small patch over the approximate solution.In order to improve the agent’s behaviour, algorithms are presented for learning the overriding patch. The patch is grown around particular regions of the problem where the approximate solution is found to be deficient. Two heuristic strategies are proposed for concentrating resources to those areas where inaccuracies in the approximate solution are most costly, drawing a compromise between solution quality and storage requirements. Patching also handles problems with continuous state variables, by two alternative methods: Kuhn triangulation over a fixed discretisation and nearest neighbour interpolation with a variable discretisation.As well as improving the agent’s behaviour, patching is also applied to the agent’s model of the environment. Inaccuracies in the agent’s model of the world are detected by statistical testing, using a selective sampling strategy to limit storage requirements for collecting data.The patching algorithms are demonstrated in several problem domains, illustrating the effectiveness of patching under a wide range of conditions. I detta arbete är syftet att ta reda på hur arbete med lappteknik i grundskolan kan genomföras. Textillärare har tillfrågats om hur de arbetar med lappteknik ute i grundskolan och varför de gör på det sättet. Sedan har undersökts vad det finns för positiva och negativa yttringar med att arbeta med lappteknik och om lärarna arbetar med en progression i lappteknik och hur den ser ut i sådana fall. Arbetet syftar även till att ta reda på om eleverna behöver några förkunskaper och vilka i sådana fall. I uppsatsen bearbetas också inlärning och instruktioner i skolan och med anledning av detta har lärare tillfrågats om vad de anser är väsentligt när ett självstudiematerial i lappteknik ska tillverkas samt om det finns bra instruktionsmaterial att tillgå i lappteknik. Till uppsatsen har litteraturstudie valts för att ta reda på fakta om lappteknik och inlärning. En kvalitativ intervju har valts för att undersöka hur man som lärare kan lägga upp arbetet med lappteknik i grundskolan. Textilslöjdslärare som arbetar i grundskolan har intervjuats. Resultatet visar att det finns flera sätt att arbeta på med lappteknik i skolan. Varje lärare bestämmer hur mycket de vill ha med av en teknik och därför är det personliga intresset en avgörande faktor. När det gäller instruktioner verkar de flesta av lärarna vara överens om att de ska innehålla både text och bild samt att texten ska vara lättläst.

Inclusion, within the context of intellectual disability, is a topical notion which underpins contemporary human service practices and policies within Western Judeo-Christian societies. As a concept, inclusion is most often considered within socio-historical and socio-political contexts, whereby technical and legislative responses are sought. However, this thesis explores the research question, "How ethically defensible is the notion of inclusion in relation to people with intellectual disability?" In undertaking a conceptual-theoretical analysis to ethically signify inclusion, the thesis contends that inclusion is a multifaceted, complex concept in a dualistic and dichotomous relationship with exclusion. It is argued that historical and contemporary conceptualisations of exclusion for people with intellectual disability have been constructed from various philosophical and theological matrices imbued with particular values about personhood. Furthermore, it is proposed that the ethical significance of inclusion and exclusion in the context of intellectual disability lies, not in the concepts themselves, but is defined and perpetuated by expressions of a particular socio-symbolic order underpinned by patriarchy and kyriarchy, and subjected to two controlling ethics - an Ethic of Normalcy and an Ethic of Anomaly. Inclusion and exclusion are conceived as phenomena relating to how membership is defined, legitimated, or repelled by concealed, occluding boundaries acting within a patriarchal socio-ethical fabric. The thesis argues that Ethical Inclusion is only possible through the rupture of these boundaries by A Transformatory Ethic of Inclusion. This is a conceptual instrument of rupture which embraces the scholarship of feminist ethics and feminist theology. Such a rupture dismantles the dualistic notions of inclusion and exclusion. In contrast, a waterman should be readily detectable by electronic means. This implies that electronic watermark detection is only feasible if the watermark detector is aware of the secret K. Ať už se to děje vědomě, nebo to vyplývá ze současných trendů a požadavků na veřejný prostor a město, které málokdo zpochybňuje, prostor je vystavěn tak, aby tyto nároky na přehlednost a jednoduchou kontrolovatelnost splňoval. Developerské firmy a jimi pověření architekti opakují prověřené obchodní modely a formy bez většího ohledu na kontext místa a začleňují tuto “logiku kontroly” do svých staveb a jejich okolí. Bytové soubory jsou plánovány a vystavovány jako jeden celek s rigidní strukturou a jen minimální možností jejich pozdější alterace. Whether it is done consciously or as a result of current “trends” and requirements, which only a few question, the space is built to meet these demands for easy controllability. The second method of control, which has also emerged during the era of modernism, is the control of the indoor climate through "mechanical environmental management" or through the use of fossil fuel energy for heating, cooling and ventilation. Current requirements for the comfort of the indoor environment presuppose a constantly, fully and homogeneously tempered environment, regardless of the outdoor climate or the time of year. Both control regimes permeate all measures of the urban environment and have a direct impact on its organization, form and, above all, on the regimes of its usage. Developers and their commissioned architects repeat well-proven business models and forms, without any major focus on the context of the place, and incorporate this "logic of control" into their buildings and surroundings. Housing complexes are planned and built up as one unit with a rigid structure and only a minimal possibility of their later alteration. The domain of control through transparency penetrates from the public space to the entrance door of the apartment unit. Indoor, social control changes to total control of the interior climate of the apartment, where the boundaries between seasons and day and night are blurred. The proposal is investigating alternative ways of urban planning and architecture. The project deals with the relationship between building, its surroundings and applicable regulations, standards and energy efficiency, along with the idea of adaptive living.
