This paper covers the rise, fall, and ultimate destruction of the twin policies of Glasnost and Perestroika in Russia as they existed under the regimes of Gorbachev, Yeltsin, and Putin. After ascending to the position of General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev attempted to liberalize the USSR through his policies of Glasnost and Perestroika. While these policies were not always followed under Gorbachev, it is clear that they were relatively successful at creating a freer society and state. However, these policies began to whither under Yeltsin, as the state, particularly the office of President, began to amass greater power alongside a society which saw the slow encroachment of censorship. Finally, Glasnost and Perestroika would perish under Vladimir Putin with his monopoly on state power accompanied by the full return of state censorship.

Focusing on the period 1985-1988, this paper aims to analyze how the Community viewed the policies developed by the new Soviet leader and received his proposals for rapprochement.

The article focuses on interactions between regional and city Communist party committees and ‘informal’ public associations in Sverdlovsk in 1989, a year before the real multiparty system was introduced in the USSR. The article analyzes materials from the former party archive, publications in party-owned newspapers and historiography. On the basis of archival materials, it is concluded that the party committees actively tried to influence ‘informal’ organizations using new methods prescribed by the policy of perestroika (discussion clubs, round tables etc), to influence new public associations through party members involved in their activities., Статья посвящена вопросам взаимодействия свердловских партийных органов и неформальных общественных объединений в год, предшествующий введению в СССР реальной многопартийности. В статье проанализированы материалы, отложившиеся в бывшем партийном архиве, газетные публикации в партийной прессе и историография. На основе анализа архивных документов делается вывод о том, что партийные органы города Свердловска пытались активно воздействовать на неформальные объедения с помощью новых методов, предписанных политикой перестройки (дискуссионные клубы, круглые столы и т.д.), воздействовать на новые общественные структуры через членов партии.

Das Ende der Kirchenverfolgung unter Michail Gorbačev förderte den gesellschaftlichen Wandel in der Sowjetunion. Davon profitierte auch die griechisch-katholische (unierte) Kirche, die in der Sowjetunion jahrzehntelang unterdrückt worden war. Großen Einfluss auf die neue Kirchenpolitik hatte der Vorsitzende des Rats für Religionsangelegenheiten, Konstantin Charčev. Die Öffnung stieß auch auf internationale Unterstützung. Insbesondere die römisch-katholische Kirche unter Johannes Paul II. erkannte die Chance. Für sie ging in Erfüllung, woran Kardinal Agostino Casaroli, der Architekt der Ostpolitik des Vatikan, viele Jahre lang gearbeitet hatte.

Este trabajo consiste en un estudio socioeconómico de la transición que sufrió Rusia durante los noventa centrado en sus principales variables económicas, la evaluación de su evolución social y del camino seguido hasta la actualidad. Para ello, presentamos una síntesis de bibliografías, mayoritariamente provenientes de EE. UU y Rusia en las que se exponen diferentes puntos de vista. A dos aspectos se le presta especial atención: la evolución económica del país, que sigue manteniendo su estatus de potencia mundial, y el cambio social en la transición desde un sistema planificado a uno de mercado en cuestión de unos años.

The paper illustrates a special and undiscovered fragment of the collapse of the communist structures of Lviv at the turn of the 80’s and 90’s of the twentieth century. as a result of controversial reforms of perestroika and the rapid deployment of the national liberation movement patriotic public of the western regions of the Ukrainian SSR for the restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty. The specifics of this segment of the communist fiasco was the artificial resuscitation of the national-communist ideology, which was not dictated by public requests, but was based on desire a separate small part of the Lviv party nomenclature to separate the CPU from the CPSU, to recognize Ukrainian independence and thus maintain its own political positions under the terms of the "Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Ukraine" of 1990.Representatives of the inner-party opposition in those day Communist Party administrative structure of Lviv were mostly local young Ukrainians – the so-called "Gorbachev’s nominees". They occupied the middle management level in the city committee, district committees and party committees of the city, and therefore were not the leaders of the communist leaders of the orthodoxBrezhnev branch directed from the eastern regions of the Ukrainian SSR and the RSFSR. This allowed them to stay at a certain the distance from the ostentatious Stalinist communist dogmas and to consider the CPSU-CPU rather as a means of high-level career advancement, and not as a union of political associates. Their authentic national roots led to internal affinity with the national-communist positions. The distance from the stable communist beliefs of the Bolshevik class in symbiosis with national preferences and career motivation called for a surrogate resuscitation of national communism in the form of an opposition coalition – "Democratic Alternatives". This imitation did not allow it to transform into an influential political force in the modern Ukrainian politics. ХХ ст. внаслідок суперечливих реформ перебудови й стрімкого розгортання національно-визвольного руху патріотично налаштованої громадськості західних областей УРСР за відновлення державної самостійності України. Специфіка цього сегменту комуністичного фіаско полягала у штучній реанімації націонал-комуністичної ідеології, яка не була продиктована суспільним запитом, а відбувалася на основі прагнення незначної частини львівської партноменклатури відділити КПУ від КПРС, визнати українську самостійність і таким чином зберегти власні політичні позиції за умов «Декларації про державний суверенітет України» 1990 р.Представники внутріпартійної опозиції у тогочасній компартійній адміністративній структурі Львова, були здебільшого місцевими молодими українцями – так званими «горбачовськими висуванцями». Вони займали середню управлінську ланку у міськкомі, райкомах та парткомах міста, а відтак не були чільними комуністичними керівниками ортодоксального брежнєвського штибу, скерованими із східних областей УРСР та РРФСР. Це дозволяло їм знаходитися на певній відстані від закостенілих сталінських комуністичних догм й розглядати КПРС-КПУ радше як засіб високостатусного кар’єрного просування, а ніж як спілку політичних однодумців. Їх автентичне національне коріння спричиняло внутрішню близькість до націоналкомуністичних позицій. Віддаленість від стійких комуністичних переконань більшовицького ґатунку у симбіозі із національним налаштуванням та кар’єрним вмотивуванням покликала до життя сурогатну реанімацію націонал-комунізму у вигляді опозиційної спілки – «Демократичної альтернативи». Така імітація не дозволила їй трансформуватися у впливову політичну силу у новочасному українському політикумі. Однак, її позитивна роль полягала у подальшому розхитуванні засад місцевої проросійської комуністичної влади, що була головною перешкодою на шляху відновлення державності України.

Scientific intelligence reveals the causes, dynamics and effects of the reducing of number of Transcarpathian Regional Committee of the CPSU-CPU communist ranks in the second half of the 80’s – early 90’s of the twentieth century as a result of the national-democratic movement which covered the region in the specified chronological period. The perestroika policy was initiated by the Communist Party leadership of the USSR at the turn of the 1980s. and was aimed at preserving the pro-government status of the ruling CPSU, the political and economic foundations of which were subject to such deformations, which was already impossible to conceal. In the political aspect, this was manifested in the concern of the country’s citizens about the ideological doctrine of communism as a result of numerous crimes of the communist leadership of the past decades. In the economic flow destructive phenomena were expressed in the permanently low material situation of workers and peasants, which were formally declared as the main state and party social support. However, reforms of the restructuring not only did not solve these problems, but also intensified intra-party destructive phenomena and significantly weakened the communist regime on the ground. As a result, in the Ukrainian SSR is rapidly expanding the national liberation movement, which leads to a sharp reduction in the number of local primary communist party cells. One of the regions on the background of which decommunization processes were particularly prominent were the western regions of Soviet Ukraine, which included the multinational Transcarpathia. In the first place, the reduction of the number of Communists covered the most numerous workers and peasants social strata, which vigorously eroded the party ground and deprived the CPSU-KPU of public support. Започаткована компартійним керівництвом СРСР на зламі 1980-х рр. перебудова мала на меті збереження провладного статусу за правлячою КПРС, політикоекономічні засади якої зазнавали таких деформацій, приховати які було вже не можливо. У політичному аспекті вони полягали у зневірі громадян країни щодо ідеологічної доктрини комунізму внаслідок чисельних злочинів комуністичного керівництва минулих десятирічь. У економічному річищі деструктивні явища виражалися у перманентно низькому матеріальному становищі робітників та селян, які офіційно були задекларовані як основна державна й партійна соціальна опора. Однак, «косметичні» реформи не тільки не вирішили вказаних проблем, але й посилили внутрішньопартійні деструктивні явища й значно ослабили комуністичний режим на місцях. Як наслідок, в УРСР відбувається швидке розгортання національно-визвольного руху, що приводить до стрімкого скорочення чисельності місцевих первинних компартійних осередків. Одним із регіонів на тлі якого декомунізаційні процеси розгорталися особливо помітно, були західні області Радянської України до складу яких входило багатонаціональне Закарпаття. У першу чергу зменшення кількості комуністів охопило найбільш чисельні робітничо-селянські соціальні верстви, що вагомо розмивало партійне підґрунтя й позбавляло КПРС-КПУ суспільної підтримки. Ключовими причинами добровільного самопозбавлення членства в партії були політичні, економічні й релігійні вмотивування, які йшли в розріз із ключовими постулатами комуністичної ідеології.На основі неопублікованих архівних документів та матеріалів періодики здійснено аналіз причин низхідної динаміки чисельності комуністичних лав Закарпаття як ілюстратора стрімкого розгортання антикомуністи

Рост интереса и стремления осмыслить процессы, имевшие место в российском обществе в последние десятилетия ХХ в., во многом обусловлен желанием разобраться в современной социально-политической ситуации. Нередко корни сегодняшнего российского общества видятся исследователям, представляющим различные области знания, именно в 1990-х гг. Пришло ли время научного исторического анализа этого периода? Скорее всего, в ответах на этот вопрос мы услышим полярные мнения: в то время как в среде профессиональных историков довольно распространена точка зрения о многолетней дистанции, необходимой для получения качественных выводов о закономерностях развития какой-либо эпохи, в программах вузовского исторического образования появляются дисциплины, посвященные изучению «краха системы социализма». Однако, наличие уже сегодня насущной необходимости выявления, аккумуляции и анализа источниковых комплексов, отражающих различные аспекты истории 1990-х гг., сомнений в научном сообществе не вызывает. В этой связи представляется перспективным обращение к практике устно-исторического интервьюирования. В контексте развития антропологического подхода устную историю можно определить как одно из наиболее социально значимых направлений исторического знания. Цель статьи — опираясь на метод устно-исторического интервью, выявить взгляд и оценочные суждения преподавателей исторического факультета Уральского федерального университета (УрФУ) на события периода перестройки и первого постсоветского десятилетия. Актуализация в работе компаративного подхода объясняется тем обстоятельством, что в воспоминаниях большинства респондентов 1990-е гг. чаще всего запечатлены на фоне событий предыдущего важного исторического этапа — перестройки., The growth of interest and need to comprehend the processes that took place in Russian society in the last decades of the 20th century is largely due to the desire to understand the current socio-political situation. Frequently enough, researchers of various fields of knowledge see the origins of today’s Russia in the 1990s. Is it time to carry out historical analysis of the period? Most likely, answers to this question will differ, i.e. while professional historians find it important to consider historical events from a long distance as a key to a proper understanding of laws in the development of any era, the historical curricula of higher educational institutions are full of disciplines devoted to the study of the “collapse of the socialist system”. However, there is no doubt in academia that it is urgent to identify, collect, and accumulate sources reflecting various aspects of the history of the 1990s. In this regard, it seems promising to turn to the practice of oral historical interviewing. In the context of the development of the anthropological approach, oral history can be defined as one of the most socially significant areas of historical knowledge. The author aims to use the oral history method to identify the views and evaluation characteristics of lecturers of the Faculty of History, Ural Federal University on the events of the perestroika period and the first post-Soviet decade. The actualisation in the work of the comparative approach is explained by the fact that in the memories of most respondents, the 1990s are most often accompanied by the events of the previous important historical stage, i.e. perestroika.

В статье представлена попытка социокультурного и социолингвистического исследования текстов поэтического поколения эпохи перестройки, т. е. поэтов, «ментальность» и «почерк» которых формировались в 1970-е гг., а активное участие в литературном процессе началось в 1980-х гг. Цель исследования — определить основные черты парадигмы перестройки (общие социокультурные эмоции, система ценностей, «пароли» эпохи, набор ключевых слов и «вещей», общий тип семиотических отношений и «парадигмообразующего» языка), отразившиеся в творчестве поколения, к которому принадлежат метареалисты (И. Жданов, А. Парщиков, А. Еременко, В. Аристов, А. Драгомощенко и нек. др.), концептуалисты (Д. А. Пригов, Л. Рубинштейн, Т. Кибиров) и иронисты (В. Друк, Н. Искренко, Ю. Арабов). В исследовании поэтических текстов применялись методы корпусного и лингвокультурного сопоставительного анализа, ключевые слова и понятия эпохи перестройки определялись методом сплошной выборки из специализированных словарей, а кроме того, выделялись с помощью метода дискурс-анализа в текстах политической публицистики. Автору удалось выявить в поэзии 1980–2000-х гг. рефлексы представления о «застое» в использовании тавтологии, о «двуязычии» советского времени — в противопоставлениях «простого» и «сложного», «буквального» и «поэтического», «поверхностного» и «глубинного», «ада» и «рая», с которым связывается понятие «личного пространства» в контексте характерных для перестройки «разукрупнения» и «гуманизации». В статье также рассматриваются параллели концепции открытого мира, сотрудничества и сотворчества, гласности и демократии с принципами построения поэтического мира и отношений с читателем. В результате автор приходит к выводу, что поэзия 1980–2000-х гг. закономерно встраивается в социокультурную и языковую парадигму перестройки., This article is an attempt at sociocultural and sociolinguistic studies of texts of the poetic generation of Perestroika, i.e. poets whose “mentality” and “writing style” were formed in the 1970s, and whose active participation in the literary process began in the 1980s. The purpose of the study is to identify the main features of the paradigm of Perestroika (common sociocultural emotions, the system of values, the “passwords” of the epoch, the set of keywords and “things”, the general type of semiotic relations and “paradigm-forming” language), reflected in the work of the generation represented by meta-realists I. Zhdanov, A. Parshchikov, A. Eremenko, V. Aristov, A. Dragomoshchenko, etc.), conceptualists (D. A. Prigov, L. Rubinstein, T. Kibirov), and ironists (V. Druk, N. Iskrenko, Y. Arabov). In the study of poetic texts, the author employs corpus and linguocultural comparative analysis methods, determining the key words and concepts of the epoch of Perestroika by means of continuous sampling from specialised dictionaries. Additionally, they are singled out using the method of discourse analysis in political journalism texts. In the poetry of the 1980s–2000s, the author manages to identify reflexes of the concept of “stagnation” in the use of tautologies, and of the “bilingualism” of the Soviet time in the oppositions between “simple” and “complex”, “literal” and “poetic”, “superficial” and “deep”, “Hell” and “Paradise”, which is associated with the concept of “personal space” in the context of “unbundling” and “humanisation” characteristic of the restructuring. The article also discusses the parallels of the concept of open world, cooperation and co-creation, “glasnost” and democracy with the principles of building a poetic world and relations with the reader. As a result, the author concludes that the poetry of the 1980s–2000s is naturally incorporated into the sociocultural and linguistic paradigm of Perestroika.

Scientific intelligence reveals the causes, dynamics and effects of the reducing of number of Transcarpathian Regional Committee of the CPSU-CPU communist ranks in the second half of the 80’s – early 90’s of the twentieth century as a result of the national-democratic movement which covered the region in the specified chronological period. The perestroika policy was initiated by the Communist Party leadership of the USSR at the turn of the 1980s. and was aimed at preserving the pro-government status of the ruling CPSU, the political and economic foundations of which were subject to such deformations, which was already impossible to conceal. In the political aspect, this was manifested in the concern of the country’s citizens about the ideological doctrine of communism as a result of numerous crimes of the communist leadership of the past decades. In the economic flow destructive phenomena were expressed in the permanently low material situation of workers and peasants, which were formally declared as the main state and party social support. However, reforms of the restructuring not only did not solve these problems, but also intensified intra-party destructive phenomena and significantly weakened the communist regime on the ground. As a result, in the Ukrainian SSR is rapidly expanding the national liberation movement, which leads to a sharp reduction in the number of local primary communist party cells. One of the regions on the background of which decommunization processes were particularly prominent were the western regions of Soviet Ukraine, which included the multinational Transcarpathia. In the first place, the reduction of the number of Communists covered the most numerous workers and peasants social strata, which vigorously eroded the party ground and deprived the CPSU-KPU of public support. Однак, «косметичні» реформи не тільки не вирішили вказаних проблем, але й посилили внутрішньопартійні деструктивні явища й значно ослабили комуністичний режим на місцях. Як наслідок, в УРСР відбувається швидке розгортання національно-визвольного руху, що приводить до стрімкого скорочення чисельності місцевих первинних компартійних осередків. Одним із регіонів на тлі якого декомунізаційні процеси розгорталися особливо помітно, були західні області Радянської України до складу яких входило багатонаціональне Закарпаття. У першу чергу зменшення кількості комуністів охопило найбільш чисельні робітничо-селянські соціальні верстви, що вагомо розмивало партійне підґрунтя й позбавляло КПРС-КПУ суспільної підтримки. The paper illustrates a special and undiscovered fragment of the collapse of the communist structures of Lviv at the turn of the 80’s and 90’s of the twentieth century. as a result of controversial reforms of perestroika and the rapid deployment of the national liberation movement patriotic public of the western regions of the Ukrainian SSR for the restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty. The specifics of this segment of the communist fiasco was the artificial resuscitation of the national-communist ideology, which was not dictated by public requests, but was based on desire a separate small part of the Lviv party nomenclature to separate the CPU from the CPSU, to recognize Ukrainian independence and thus maintain its own political positions under the terms of the "Declaration on the State Sovereignty of Ukraine" of 1990.Representatives of the inner-party opposition in those day Communist Party administrative structure of Lviv were mostly local young Ukrainians – the so-called "Gorbachev’s nominees". They occupied the middle management level in the city committee, district committees and party committees of the city, and therefore were not the leaders of the communist leaders of the orthodoxBrezhnev branch directed from the eastern regions of the Ukrainian SSR and the RSFSR. This allowed them to stay at a certain the distance from the ostentatious Stalinist communist dogmas and to consider the CPSU-CPU rather as a means of high-level career advancement, and not as a union of political associates. Their authentic national roots led to internal affinity with the national-communist positions. The distance from the stable communist beliefs of the Bolshevik class in symbiosis with national preferences and career motivation called for a surrogate resuscitation of national communism in the form of an opposition coalition – "Democratic Alternatives". This imitation did not allow it to transform into an influential political force in the modern Ukrainian politics. Це дозволяло їм знаходитися на певній відстані від закостенілих сталінських комуністичних догм й розглядати КПРС-КПУ радше як засіб високостатусного кар’єрного просування, а ніж як спілку політичних однодумців. Їх автентичне національне коріння спричиняло внутрішню близькість до націоналкомуністичних позицій. Віддаленість від стійких комуністичних переконань більшовицького ґатунку у симбіозі із національним налаштуванням та кар’єрним вмотивуванням покликала до життя сурогатну реанімацію націонал-комунізму у вигляді опозиційної спілки – «Демократичної альтернативи». Така імітація не дозволила їй трансформуватися у впливову політичну силу у новочасному українському політикумі. Однак, її позитивна роль полягала у подальшому розхитуванні засад місцевої проросійської комуністичної влади, що була головною перешкодою на шляху відновлення державності України.

El presente trabajo revisa las relaciones entre España y la URSS desde 1977, año en el que se reanudan las relaciones diplomáticas hispano-soviéticas, hasta el final de la Guerra Fría. Si el restablecimiento de las relaciones diplomáticas permitió ampliar el marco de los acuerdos bilaterales suscritos en distintos campos entre ambos países, el ingreso de España, años después en la OTAN, y su permanencia tuvieron un impacto negativo en la Unión Soviética y así se reflejó desde la esfera política y la propaganda soviética. En 1985, la llegada de Gorbachov a la secretaría general del CC del PCUS implicó cambios en el interior de la URSS, con la puesta en marcha de la perestroika y una nueva política exterior, la novoe myslenie. Esta última se convirtió en protagonista de la propaganda desplegada por las delegaciones de las asociaciones de amistad hispano-soviética, presentes desde 1979 en España. Ello se debe a que hicieron de escaparate de la visión soviética de la política internacional. Sirvieron también para difundir mensajes en la línea de los movimientos sociales contrarios a la permanencia española en la OTAN y para concitar apoyo internacional al proceso de cambios que tuvo lugar en los compases finales de la guerra fría., This article analyses Spanish-Soviet relationships from 1977, when Spain’s diplomatic relations with the USSR resumed, until the end of the Cold War. On the one hand, the reestablishment of diplomatic relations expanded the framework of bilateral agreements signed in different areas by both countries. On the other hand, Spain’s joining NATO for good a few years later had a negative impact in the Soviet Union. The Soviet propaganda duly echoed this from a political perspective. Gorbachev’s undertaking the General Secretariat of the CPSU in 1985, brought about important changes in the USSR with the implementation of Perestroika and a new foreign policy, novoe myslenie. The latter became the protagonist in Spain of the propaganda displayed by Spanish-Soviet friendship associations existing since 1979. These is due to the fact that they served as a showcase for the Soviet vision of international politics. They also displayed propaganda in line with social movements opposing Spain’s permanence in NATO and, finally, gained international support for the process of changes taking place in the final stages of the cold war.

El presente estudio trata de ilustrar cómo el PCE abordó el escenario de la inmediata posguerra fría. Con tal propósito, analiza las actitudes adoptadas por los comunistas españoles, no solo respecto a la Perestroika y la crisis del sistema soviético, sino también a acontecimientos internacionales clave como la unificación alemana, la crisis del Golfo y el nacimiento de la Unión Europea. Se subraya cómo, bajo el liderazgo de Anguita, el PCE experimentó un viraje a la izquierda que le llevó a fundamentar su política en una lógica de neta contraposición al nuevo orden mundial, caracterizado este por la hegemonía estadounidense y la expansión del modelo neoliberal., This study aims to illustrate how the Spanish Communist Party (PCE) approached the immediate Post-Cold War scenario. For this purpose, it analyses the attitudes adopted by the Spanish communists, not only towards Perestroika and the crisis of the Soviet system, but also towards key international events such as the German Unification process, the Gulf crisis and the birth of the European Union. The work underlines how, under Anguita’s leadership, the PCE underwent a left-wise turn leading Anguita to establish his policy on a logic of strong opposition to the new world order characterized by American hegemony and the expansion of the neoliberal model.

It is concluded that its essential characteristics do not depend on the form of government and social structure.

В статье, основанной на материалах биографического интервью, исследуется специфика демократизации страны во времена перестройки, рассматривается период с 1987 года, с момента официального появления понятия гласность, предпринимается попытка выделить основные черты данного феномена, опираясь на рассказы современников тех событий., The article, based on the materials of the biographical interviews, the paper discusses specifics of democratization of the country during perestroika, the period since 1987, since the official appearance of the concept of publicity, attempts to highlight the main features of this phenomenon, drawing on the accounts of contemporaries of those events.

The last decade of the Soviet Union witnessed unprecedented sociological and political change following the advent of Mikhail Gorbechev’s policies of glasnost and perestroika. Shifting tectonic plates of political opportunities provided the space for social movements to emerge that were critical of the status quo for the first time. The birth of political toleration allowed public acknowledgement that Soviet industrialisation had led to widespread environmental degradation and catastrophe – and an environmental movement emerged which opposed it.

This paper describes and analyses the development of Swedish exports to the Soviet Union during the perestroika period, both in general and with regard to the specific case of the coastal trade between these countries using the Uppsala model's concepts of learning, the liability of foreignness, and the liability of outsidership. During this period the Soviet foreign trade system went through a significant reorganisation, with foreign trade being decentralised and newactorsbeing established, although the source material indicates that this decentralisation was less disruptive to the coastal trade than in general. It concludes that the different outcomes seen in these cases could be attributed to the coastal trade being less affected by the liability of outsidership than the general case. With regard to learning, it concludes that experiential knowledge, both from personal experience and network sources, is necessary in order to evaluate objective knowledge, as this can also be seen in the source material.

One of the great superpowers in recent history experienced a tumultuous final decade, shining a light on several important policies of economic reform known as perestroika, championed by General Secretary of the USSR Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev. According to, for instance, Stuart and Gregory, the reforms aimed at renewing making the Soviet economy more efficient. In this essay, the impact of the reform on the economy is subject of analysis.The subject is approached the topic via literature research on the topic of 1980s USSR economic problems, combined with key aggregate data on economic conditions (i.e. grain yield production, GDP per capita pre- and post-perestroika, foreign trade, life expectant pre-and post-perestroika). The thesis concluded that perestroika was unable to salvage the USSR, in fact, conditions only worsened after its administration, following into the 1990s.

Социальные и политические трансформации исследуемого периода обусловливают особую потребность в самоидентификации. Национальная идея, основываясь на ресурсах культурной памяти, выступает одним из способов формирования коллективной идентичности. Политическая элита стремится использовать объединенные национальной идеей массы в собственных интересах.

Статья посвящена анализу переговоров Дж. Буша и М. С. Горбачева на Мальте на основании документов из архива Библиотеки Дж. Буша. Мальтийский саммит 2–3 декабря 1989 г. стал рубежным фактом в процессе окончания Холодной войны, что было отражено как в воспоминаниях участников, так и в журналистских заметках. Действительно, подобный переговорный процесс был возможен только в относительно мирных условиях. Однако анализ встречи на Мальте не находится на передовой исторической науки, а изданные работы основаны преимущественно на источниках личного происхождения. Для Администрации Дж. Буша принципиальным вопросом было определение характера изменений в Советском Союзе. Саммит стал попыткой найти подтверждение реального внешнеполитического поворота при М. С. Горбачеве, поэтому подготовка к нему была весьма кропотливой. На встрече не было определенной повестки, однако Дж. Буш выступал с конкретными предложениями как по вопросам разоружения, так и по проблемам региональной политики. М. С. Горбачев больше использовал миротворческую риторику и апеллировал к новому статусу советско-американских отношений. Несмотря на то, что на встрече был задан дружественный тон общения, по некоторым вопросам стороны к консенсусу прийти не смогли. Буша удостоверилась в реальности изменений советской внешней политики и возможности получать уступки от СССР по многим вопросам, в том числе и по проблеме объединения Германии., The article analyzes the Gorbachev-Bush negotiations at the Malta Summit. The author uses documents from the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and memoirs of the participants to research the then changing Soviet-American relations. According to the memoirs of its participants and contemporary journalists’ articles, the Malta Summit became a milestone in the process of the Cold War’s ending. Such negotiations were only possible only in relatively peaceful conditions. However, the analysis of the Malta Summit is not in the limelight of historical science; the works published are mainly based on memoirs. It was crucial for the George H. W. Bush Administration to determine the changes in the Soviet policy. The summit was an attempt to verify the genuineness of Gorbachev’s foreign policy shift, which made the preparation for it very rigorous. There was no agenda at the Summit, but G. H. W. Bush made specific proposals both in arms control and in regional issues. M. Gorbachev used peaceful rhetoric and appealed to the new status of the USSR–US relations. Despite the fact that there was a cooperative spirit at the Summit some issues remained unresolved. There were no formal agreements at the Summit; thus, its importance lies in the psychological sphere. The G. H. W. Bush Administration made sure that the changes in the Soviet foreign policy were real, and they could get more concessions, including the German reunification.

Estonia's path towards a market economy started in 1987, when Gorbachev's market-oriented reform course allowed for an unprecedented level of autonomous cooperation with capitalist countries. The developing networks with Western companies and economists, in particular from the neutral Nordic neighbours Finland and Sweden, played a key role in the process of implementing an increasingly radical pro-market agenda. Unrestricted by diplomatic constraints, Swedish and Finnish entrepreneurs, investors and advisors established numerous links to the evolving Estonian business environment, which was promoted as a bridge to the vast Soviet market. The Nordic connection facilitated the early transfer of market economy thinking and practices to Soviet Estonia and kicked off a long-term rearrangement of economic linkages across the Baltic Sea. Taking into account this transnational cooperation contributes to a new understanding not only of Estonia's economic transformation, but also of the emergence of a new regional economic order that accompanied the geopolitical changes.
