Cities face the challenges of supplying food and managing organic municipal solid waste (OMSW) sustainably amid increasing urbanization rates. Urban agriculture (UA) can help with this effort by producing local crops that are fertilized with nutrients recovered from compost generated from OMSW. This research aims to determine the potential of OMSW compost to supply the nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) demand of UA and the environmental benefits of replacing mineral fertilizer from a life cycle perspective. The Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) serves as the case study given its commitment to reuse biowaste according to the Revised Waste Framework Directive and to promote UA as a signing member of the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact. Based on crop requirements and farmer surveys, we find that the annual NPK demands of the agricultural fields of the AMB that cover 5,500 ha and produce 70,000 tons of crops are approximately 769, 113, and 592 tons of NPK, respectively. Spatial material flow analysis and life cycle assessment were applied to found that the current waste management system can potentially substitute 8 % of the total NPK demanded by UA with compost, reduce the impacts by up to 39 % and yield savings in global warming of 130 %. The more ambitious future scenario of 2025 can potentially substitute 21 % of the total NPK demand and reduce environmental impacts up to 1,049 %, depending on the category considered. Avoiding processing of mixed OMSW, mineral fertilizer replacement and cogeneration of electricity from biogas are the major contributors to these environmental savings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Household organic waste has great potential for closing nutrient cycles in agriculture. This requires proper waste separation by households. Personal communication at the doorstep potentially improves household waste separation behaviour but it is expensive and findings from existing research are mixed. Based on results of previous studies and from a quasi-experiment with non-equivalent groups design in two German municipalities, this paper argues that efficiency of personal communication depends on its context. It can positively influence behaviour when recycling is voluntary and participation rates are low. However, it has no significant effects if recycling is mandatory. One explanation could be different perceptions of recycling in mandatory and voluntary schemes. In voluntary schemes door stepping can activate the intrinsic motivation of households. In mandatory schemes, all households need to participate irrespective of intrinsic motivation. This research shows that this creates a situation in which a small share of households is responsible for almost all contamination. This can be overcome by considering extrinsic factors that affect recycling behaviour. The paper recommends further research to understand which combination of incentives, sanctions and information is efficient in affecting behaviour change in mandatory recycling schemes. Sustainable management of lakes requires us to overcome ecological, economic, and social challenges. These challenges can be addressed by focusing on achieving ecological improvement within a multifaceted, co-beneficial context. In-lake restoration measures may promote more rapid ecosystem responses than is feasible with catchment measures alone, even if multiple interventions are needed. In particular, we identify restoration methods that support the overarching societal target of a circular economy through the use of nutrients, sediments, or biomass that are removed from a lake, in agriculture, as food, or for biogas production. In this emerging field of sustainable restoration techniques, we show examples, discuss benefits and pitfalls, and flag areas for further research and development. Each lake should be assessed individually to ensure that restoration approaches will effectively address lake-specific problems, do not harm the target lake or downstream ecosystems, are cost-effective, promote delivery of valuable ecosystem services, minimize conflicts in public interests, and eliminate the necessity for repeated interventions. Achieving optimal, sustainable results from lake restoration relies on multidisciplinary research and close interactions between environmental, social, political, and economic sectors. Volcanic tuffs rich in chabazite zeolites have been extensively examined for their potential to enhance soil properties and increase fertilizer efficiency, both in their natural state and when enriched with nitrogen (N). However, there is a scarcity of data regarding their utilization in acidic sandy soil, particularly when used alongside organic fertilizers. This paper presents the findings of a 50-day laboratory incubation study that investigated the dynamics of N pools in an acidic sandy-loam agricultural soil treated with various N sources. These sources included urea, N-enriched chabazite zeolite tuff, and pelleted composted manure applied at a rate of 170 kg N/ha. Additionally, the N sources were tested in combination with chabazite zeolite tuff mixed into the soil to assess its role as a soil conditioner. The results revealed distinct behaviours among the tested N sources, primarily impacting soil pH and N dynamics. Soil fertilized with manure exhibited slow N mineralization, whereas N-enriched zeolite displayed a more balanced behaviour concerning net NO3−-N production and NH4+-N consumption. Both N-enriched zeolite and urea temporarily altered the soil pH, resembling a "liming" effect, while pelleted manure facilitated a prolonged shift towards neutral pH values. Considering the water adsorption capacity of zeolite minerals, caution is advised when adjusting water content and employing combustion methods to measure soil organic matter in zeolite-treated soil to avoid potential inaccuracies. In summary, N-enriched chabazite zeolite tuff emerged as a valuable N source in acidic sandy-loam soil, offering a promising alternative to synthetic fertilizers and showcasing a sustainable means of N recycling. Growing algae on anaerobic digestate could decrease the algal production cost while reducing nutrient pollution. In past work, we developed a successful biological pretreatment for digestate that enables rapid algal growth on digestate without dilution. The objective of this work was to test the effectiveness of this pretreatment in outdoor algae cultures over a year-long timeframe. The study was conducted in semi-continuous, replicated bubble column photobioreactors in Auburn, AL, USA. Algae could grow successfully in pretreated digestate during the fall, spring, and summer, achieving average growth rates of 30, 42, and 66 mg L-1 d-1, respectively. Although the cold temperatures in winter suppressed algal growth, external heating was not required to keep the cultures alive. For two weeks during the summer, the system was challenged with 100% digestate that did not undergo pretreatment, and the algal community suffered a culture collapse with a significant (p < 0.001) decrease in productivity compared to the previous batches in which pretreatment was used. Nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur removal were observed during robust algal growth. There was no nitrification in the photobioreactors during the initial 200 days, but evidence of nitrification emerged during the summer and persisted into the fall. Nitrospirae were detected by 16S rRNA sequencing, proving that nitrifying bacteria could adapt to high ammonium (462 - 1502 mg/L). The eukaryotic community was dominated by Coelastrum (>90%) in the cold season, and the dominance transitioned to Chlorella in the warm season (>95%) based on 18S rRNA sequencing. A new species of wood-soldier fly under the genus Solva Walker, 1859 (Diptera: Xylomyidae) (Solva andamanensis sp. n. Pramanik, Naskar & Banerjee) is described from the tropical forest of Andaman Island, India. Males can be distinguished from other species by a combination of characters, specifically the ochre yellow antenna; snow-white cylindrical palpi; yellow fore coxa, one antero-dorsal bristle in fore femur, black scutellum and black hind coxa. Male terminalia is illustrated here. Furthermore, Solva javana (Meijere, 1907) (Diptera: Xylomyidae) is reported for the first time from Andaman Island as well as India. Microalgae biotechnology can strengthen circular economy concepts in the wastewater treatment sector. This study investigated the Norwegian microalgae strains of Tetradesmus wisconsinensis, Lobochlamys segnis, and Klebsormidium flaccidum for their efficiency in nutrient removal. Their biomass productivity and compositions were evaluated for bioenergy and bi-products development. In the laboratory batch experiment with synthetic municipal wastewater, all strains accomplished total removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. L. segnis removed all NH4+ and PO43− (initial concentration of 28 and 15 mg/L, respectively) earliest among others. T. wisconsinensis biomass was superior in total carbohydrates content (40%) and fatty acid profile that imply biorefinery potential. The fatty acid (TFA) content was the highest in L. segnis (193 ± 12 mg/g dry cells), while K. flaccidum accumulated fatty acids that consisted largely of polyunsaturated fatty acids (82% of TFA). The highest protein level was measured in K. flaccidum (53%). Observed variations in biomass components can be used for a strategic production of targeted compound in resource recovery scenarios for biofuel generation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Animal excretion provides nutrients for primary productivity and can be a crucial component of ecosystem nutrient cycling. The concentrations of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in an animal's excretion are strongly influenced by the C:N:P stoichiometry (molar ratios) of its body and of the food it eats. We measured the C:N:P ratios of quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) tissues and excreta and of seston across wide environmental and spatial gradients in the upper Laurentian Great Lakes. We then investigated how mussel excretion rates were impacted by stoichiometric mismatch—the difference between the C:P ratios of mussel tissues and the C:P ratios their food. Quagga mussel internal C:N:P stoichiometry varied significantly across sites and seasons, driven primarily by changes in tissue P concentrations. When mussel tissues had substantially lower C:P ratios than seston (that is, strong stoichiometric mismatch), mussels excreted significantly less N and P relative to C. Excretion C:N ratios varied by nearly threefold, while C:P ratios varied by tenfold. The effect of the stoichiometric mismatch on excretion stoichiometry was more dramatic in the spring, when mussels had higher tissue P concentrations, than in the summer. This suggests seasonality in mussel P demand. Our results challenge the assumption of strict internal homeostasis in consumers and demonstrate that food and tissue stoichiometry need to be considered to predict consumer excretion stoichiometry. These findings help to better understand the impact of consumer-driven nutrient cycling in aquatic environments and quagga mussel contributions to the nutrient budgets of invaded ecosystems. Background: Wastewater from sewage treatment plants contains high levels of nutrients, which can be used for plant nutrition. Classical wastewater treatment plants use complex microbial consortia of autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms for biological wastewater treatment. Certain autotrophic microalgae (e.g., species of the genera Chlorella, Scenedesmus, and Pediastrum) accumulate nutrients from wastewater very effectively. Aims: We investigated the potential of microalgae biomass obtained from a prototype wastewater treatment plant as a source of nutrients for crops, focusing on nitrogen. Methods: We provided wheat plants with different levels of algae biomass equivalent to 60, 120, and 180 kg N per hectare or with mineral fertilizer (N, P, and K) equivalent to the amounts contained in the algal biomass. Physiological and phenotypic traits were measured during growth, including vegetation indices, photosynthetic performance, growth, and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). In addition, the adundances of Bacteria, Archaea and fungi and genes of ammonium oxidizing Bacteria and Archaea were determined in the rhizosphere of differently fertilized plants. Results: Microalgal application at fertilizer levels of 120 and 180 kg N ha–1 showed significantly improved physiological performance, growth, yield and nutrient uptake compared to the unfertilized control. Nevertheless, their yields and NUE were lower than with the application of equal amounts of mineral fertilization, while the adundance of rhizosphere microbes and ammonia‐oxidizing microorganisms were not significantly affected. Conclusions: Microalgae from wastewater treatments form a suitable source of organic fertilizer for wheat plants with only moderate reductions in N use efficiency compared to mineral fertilizer. Incorporating a variety of microalgae into wastewater treatment is considered an economically viable and environmentally sound strategy. The present work assessed the growth characteristics of Chlorella sorokiniana during cultivation in balanced synthetic media and domestic wastewater. Increasing the NH4+–N concentration to 360 mg L−1 and adding extra PO43−–P and SO42−–S (up to 80 and 36 mg L−1, respectively) contributed to an increase in the total biomass levels (5.7–5.9 g L−1) during the cultivation of C. sorokiniana in synthetic media. Under these conditions, the maximum concentrations of chlorophylls and carotenoids were 180 ± 7.5 and 26 ± 1.4 mg L−1, respectively. Furthermore, when studying three types of domestic wastewaters, it was noted that only one wastewater contributed to the productive growth of C. sorokiniana, but all wastewaters stimulated an increased accumulation of protein. Finally, the alga, when growing in optimal unsterilized wastewater, showed a maximum specific growth rate of 0.73 day−1, a biomass productivity of 0.21 g L−1 day−1, and 100% NH4+–N removal. These results demonstrate that the tested alga actively adapts to changes in the composition of the growth medium and accumulates high levels of protein in systems with poor-quality water. Nutrient availability plays a crucial role in microalgae growth in domestic wastewater. In this study, we investigated the impact of different nitrogen and phosphorus ratios (5:1, 10:1, and 20:1, m∙m−1), and the addition of inorganic carbon on microalgae growth and nutrient uptake from domestic wastewater. Microalgae biomass achieved values ranging from 0.54 to 1.41 g·L−1. The cultivation process had maximum removal efficiencies of 83.7% for soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD), 74.0% for total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), and 100.0% for ammonia (NH3) and orthophosphate (PO43−). All the NH3 and PO43− concentrations from domestic wastewater without supplementation were completely removed on the fourth day of cultivation. Moreover, no significant differences in microalgae growth, and NH3 and PO43− removals were observed between the conditions with and without nutrient supplementation on the fourth day of cultivation. This study has shown the feasibility of growing microalgae in domestic wastewater without any nutritional supplementation. Further investigations are required to check the long-term performance, energy requirements, and economic viability of this system for wastewater treatment and the production of nutrient-rich biomass for agricultural applications. The exchange of material and individuals between neighboring food webs is ubiquitous and affects ecosystem functioning. Here, we explore animal foraging movement between adjacent, heterogeneous habitats and its effect on a suite of interconnected ecosystem functions. Combining dynamic food web models with nutrient‐recycling models, we study foraging across habitats that differ in fertility and plant diversity. We found that net foraging movement flowed from high to low fertility or high to low diversity and boosted stocks and flows across the whole loop of ecosystem functions, including biomass, detritus, and nutrients, in the recipient habitat. Contrary to common assumptions, however, the largest flows were often between the highest and intermediate fertility habitats rather than highest and lowest. The effect of consumer influx on ecosystem functions was similar to the effect of increasing fertility. Unlike fertility, however, consumer influx caused a shift toward highly predator‐dominated biomass distributions, especially in habitats that were unable to support predators in the absence of consumer foraging. This shift resulted from both direct and indirect effects propagated through the interconnected ecosystem functions. Only by considering both stocks and fluxes across the whole loop of ecosystem functions do we uncover the mechanisms driving our results. In conclusion, the outcome of animal foraging movements will differ from that of dispersal and diffusion. Together we show how considering active types of animal movement and the interconnectedness of ecosystem functions can aid our understanding of the patchy landscapes of the Anthropocene. Two nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton (NZP) models for a closed ecosystem that incorporates a delay in nutrient recycling, obtained using the gamma distribution function with one or two degrees of freedom, are analysed. The models are described by systems of ordinary differential equations of four and five dimensions. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the mean delay of the distribution and the total nutrients affect the stability of the equilibrium solutions. Local stability theory and bifurcation theory are used to determine the long-time dynamics of the models. It is found that both models exhibit comparable qualitative dynamics. There are a maximum of three equilibrium points in each of the two models, and at most one of them is locally asymptotically stable. The change of stability from one equilibrium to another takes place through a transcritical bifurcation. In some hypotheses on the functional response, the nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton equilibrium loses stability via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation, causing the apparition of a stable limit cycle. The way in which the results are consistent with prior research and how they extend them is discussed. A total of twenty mixtures of weed, B-Lac and molasses were prepared in order to evaluate an accelerated liquid fertilizer (ALF) based on these plants. A mixture of 85% weed: water (1:1), 10% molasses and 5% BLac showed the best characteristics and was reproduced at a pilot scale. ALF was applied to lettuce using the following treatments: one foliar application per week of 10 mL L-1 (FA1), two foliar applications per week of 10 mL L-1 (FA2), one drench application of 50 mL L-1 every week (DA1), a drench application of 50 mL L-1 every two weeks (DA2) and a control without application (CWA). The variables evaluated were total yield, commercial yield, fresh weight, height, head diameter, percentage of dry matter and the concentration of foliar nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The mixtures in the laboratory and pilot phase were evaluated in a completely randomized design. The field phase was assessed in a completely randomized block design with five treatments and four replications. No significant differences were found between the treatments, except in the percentage of dry matter and potassium content, where FA2 showed the best results (2.35% and 541 mg plant-1, respectively). The highest total yield (26.4 t ha-1) and commercial (24.11 t ha-1) were achieved with DA2; however, the nutritional content was lower than that in the other treatments. Using homolactic fermentation it was possible to recycle weeds and produce ALF, which has potential as a biofertilizer according to its chemical characterization and effects shown on lettuce cultivation. Maize is one of the most important cereals in the world. It is a crop demanding in nitrogen. Therefore, alternative sources of fertilization bring agronomic, environmental and economic benefits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biomass and productivity of maize fertigated with wastewater from swine and fish farming in different dilutions. The soil used is classified as Dystroferric Red Latosol, Cerrado phase, with clayey texture. The experimental design used was randomized blocks in 2 × 4 split plots with three replications. The treatments consisted of two sources of wastewater (fish farming and swine farming) diluted with the recommended dose of wastewater + 0, 25, 50 and 75% of its volume in water. The accumulation of dry mass (leaf, stalk and aerial parts) was evaluated at 30, 60, 90 and 110 days after sowing. The evaluation of yield variables (number of grain rows, number of grains per row, grain sizes, grain dry weight, gran yield and harvest index) occurred at 130 days after sowing. The largest accumulation of dry biomass at the end of the maize cycle and evaluated productivity variables were obtained with the application of swine farming wastewater. Wastewater from fish farming applied via an irrigation system without dilution (0%) is the most suitable for obtaining the productivity of corn grains. Policymakers and researchers have discussed mission-oriented innovation policies (MIPs) as one way to tackle the grand challenges of modern societies. Our contribution to MIP research is to provide a case analysis of the unfolding of such a policy from a hybridity perspective. Hybridity refers to the amalgamation of public policies, private efforts, and voluntary activities when pursuing societal aims. In practice, hybridity integrates value propositions from governments, markets, and civil society. Our case study subject is the Finnish nutrient recycling (NR) policy. The NR policy aims to supersede the dominance of chemical fertilisers with organic fertilisers. We analysed forms of hybridity and hybrid constellations of actors that were initiated as part of the Finnish NR policy. Subsequently, we analysed how the value-creation mechanisms of legitimising, compromising, and mixing appear in the NR policy. Sustainable food production has become increasingly important. Soilless cultivation systems offer several advantages, such as water and nutrient use efficiency, and can be implemented where traditional agriculture is impossible. Bioponic systems use locally or regionally available nutrient sources from organic waste streams (either fluid or solid) and can thus contribute to closing nutrient cycles locally. Bioponics harnesses the metabolic processes of microorganisms which release nutrients from organic matter. This study aimed to set up a bioponic system, by using biogas digestate concentrate and biochar as nutrient sources, and promoting nutrient release from the organic sources by including a biofilter in the system. The development of water quality, plant growth, and quality was monitored extensively. In addition, the influence of either the fungal biocontrol agent Trichoderma atrobrunneum or UV-C treatment of the nutrient solution on plant health and growth was investigated. Three cultivation cycles with Lactuca sativa ("HAWKING" Salanova®) in bioponic (BP), hydroponic (HP), and soil (SO) cultivation were performed. The study showed that healthy lettuces could be produced in BP systems, using a biogas digestate concentrate and biochar as nutrient sources, despite salt accumulation in the nutrient solution. In plant sap analyses, lettuces cultivated in BP systems contained less nitrate but more ammonium and chloride. The yield of the lettuces grown in the BP systems was intermediate, compared to the HP and the SO. The fungus, T. atrobrunneum, strain, T720, survived in soil and soilless cultivation systems. Compared to the HP and the SO systems, the shoot height of lettuces grown in the BP system, with the application of Trichoderma, was significantly increased. In SO systems with Trichoderma application, a significantly higher chlorophyll and flavonoid content, but significantly lower shoot height was observed. The fresh weight of lettuce roots was significantly higher in HP systems with Trichoderma treatment. Cultivating plants by using organic waste streams requires commitment and experience from producers. In BP systems, a biofilter (either within the system or externally, to increase nutrient levels) can help to rapidly convert the ammonium-rich fertilizer to plant-available nutrients. Unlike conventional HP systems, in BP systems, nutrients are released slowly over time, requiring close monitoring and adjustments. In conclusion, healthy lettuces for human consumption can be produced in BP systems, and the application of the biocontrol agent used has some beneficial influence on plant growth. Background: Fertilization with organic waste compost can close the nutrient cycles between urban and rural environments. However, its effect on yield and soil fertility must be investigated. Aim: This study investigated the long‐term effect of compost on soil nutrient and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) concentration, nutrient budgets, and nitrogen (N) mineralization and efficiency. Methods: After 21 years of annual compost application (100/400 kg N ha–1 year–1 [100BC/400BC]) alone and combined with mineral fertilization, soil was analyzed for pH, organic carbon (SOC), nutrient (total N and P, Nmin, extractable CAL‐P, CAL‐K, and Mg), and PTE (Cu, Ni, Zn) concentrations. Yields were recorded and nutrient/PTE budgets and apparent net mineralization (ANM, only 2019) were calculated. Results: N efficiency was the highest in maize and for mineral fertilization. Compost application led to lower N efficiencies, but increased ANM, SOC, pH, and soil N, and surpluses of N, P, and all PTEs. Higher PTE concentrations were only found in 400BC for Cu. Nutrient budgets correlated with soil nutrient concentration. A surplus of 16.1 kg P ha–1 year–1 and 19.5 kg K ha–1 year–1 resulted in 1 mg kg–1 increase in CAL‐P and CAL‐K over 21 years. Conclusion: Compost application supplies nutrients to crops with a minor risk of soil‐accumulation of PTEs. However, the nutrient stoichiometry provided by compost does not match crop offtakes causing imbalances. Synchronization of compost N mineralization and plant N demand does not match and limits the yield effect. In winter wheat only 65–70% of N mineralization occurred during the growth period. This study focuses on the feasibility of the dry anaerobic digestion of solid agricultural biomass for efficient renewable-energy production and nutrient recycling. Methane production and the amount of nitrogen in the digestates were measured in pilot- and farm-scale leach-bed reactors. In the pilot scale, with a digestion time of 133 days, the methane production of a mixture of whole crop fava bean and horse manure corresponded to 94% and 116%, respectively, of the methane potentials of the solid substrates. The mono-digestion of fava beans resulted in relatively low methane production (production/potential ratios of 59% and 57%). In two full-scale experiments, the methane production of mixtures of clover-grass silage, chicken manure, and horse manure corresponded to 108% and 100% of their respective methane potentials with digestion times of 117 and 185 days. In co-digestion, the production/potential ratios were similar in the pilot and farm experiments. High nitrogen loss was observed in the farm scale when the digestate was stored in a stack covered with a tarpaulin during summertime. Microalgae are capable of assimilating nutrients from wastewater (WW), producing clean water and biomass rich in bioactive compounds that need to be recovered from inside the microalgal cell. This work investigated subcritical water (SW) extraction to collect high-value compounds from the microalga Tetradesmus obliquus after treating poultry WW. The treatment efficiency was evaluated in terms of total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), phosphate, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and metals. T. obliquus was able to remove 77% TKN, 50% phosphate, 84% COD, and metals (48–89%) within legislation values. SW extraction was performed at 170 °C and 30 bar for 10 min. SW allowed the extraction of total phenols (1.073 mg GAE/mL extract) and total flavonoids (0.111 mg CAT/mL extract) with high antioxidant activity (IC50 value, 7.18 µg/mL). The microalga was shown to be a source of organic compounds of commercial value (e.g., squalene). Finally, the SW conditions allowed the removal of pathogens and metals in the extracts and residues to values in accordance with legislation, assuring their safety for feed or agriculture applications. The evolution of environmental policy is increasingly driven by the emergence and interaction of policy concepts and the frameworks, knowledge, and ideas they employ. We argue that policy actors' creative use of policy concepts often leads to their combinatorial development. In this policy process, the concepts interact and shape each other's policy relevance and future development under the influence of ideas, knowledge, and political factors. We formulate this new research approach using ideational and policy process theories. In particular, we explicate internal and contextual combinatory elements that enable policy change resulting from mutual development of policy concepts. Leaf decay in seagrasses is enhanced in some seasons since large green senescent beach-cast seagrass leaves are frequently recorded during autumn and winter seasons. Here, we explore if senescence is operating in seagrass leaf decay or if hydrodynamic stress is responsible for the seasonal leaf abscission. A seasonal study on the temperate seagrass Cymodocea nodosa was carried out in four locations with contrasting hydrodynamic regimes. The morphological, biomechanical and material properties of C. nodosa were measured. The force required to break the ligule was always lower than that required to break the blade. This could be considered an adaptive strategy to reduce acute drag forces and thus lessen the chance of plant uprooting. The absolute force needed to dislodge the blade at the ligule level varied with season and location, with the lowest forces recorded in autumn. This may indicate that senescence is operating in this species. On the other hand, the minimum estimated failure velocities for leaf abscission were also recorded in autumn. Consequently, this may cause the premature shedding of leaves in this season before the senescence process has finished and can probably explain the occurrence of green beach-cast seagrass leaves usually found during autumn and winter. A harmful algal bloom is one of the significant concerns of marine biodiversity. The control of such algal bloom is required for the conservation of marine ecology. The proposed work discusses a model for interacting nutrient phytoplankton systems with the effect of toxic chemicals released by phytoplankton and time delay in toxin liberation. Our main aim is to provide a great insight into the impact of toxins and time delay on the dynamics of nutrient‐phytoplankton. We investigate the stability of system dynamics, and the condition for the existence of Turing instability is obtained. The role of time delay is also investigated for the proposed system. The numerical simulation shows that toxin release rate, the diffusion coefficient of nutrients, and time delay significantly impact system dynamics. We observe that increasing values of toxin release results in the system dynamics show stable and oscillatory behavior without diffusion. The spatial and spatio‐temporal patterns show that the higher value of the rate of toxin release lead to periodic and standing waves. Inspired by agroecology, ecological aquaculture proposes an alternative model that uses ecology as a paradigm to develop innovative, more eco-friendly aquaculture with environmental, economic and social benefits. Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) is one application of this principle. Inspired by the natural trophic chain, it associates primary producers with primary or secondary consumers, providing a new source of biomass without requiring supplementary feed by recycling inorganic and organic wastes. Of these systems, land-based IMTA demonstrate several advantages, especially easier control of nutrient flows, contaminants and/or predators. This study focused on a land-based marine IMTA, combining a recirculating aquaculture system for fish consecutively with a natural marine polyculture of microalgae and oyster cultivation. The objective was to assess the ability of the microalgal polyculture both to bioremediate fish nutrients and to sustain oyster growth. For the first time in a Mediterranean climate, we confirmed the feasibility of developing a microalgae community of interest for oysters maintained by fish effluent. Despite strong variability in microalgae production, this IMTA system resulted in significant oyster growth over the experimental period of 1 month, with growth results of the same order of magnitude as natural juvenile growth. In the conditions tested, this IMTA with reduced human intervention allowed a gain in recoverable biomass of 3.7 g of oyster produced per killogramme of fish feed distributed. By transforming waste into additional biomass, IMTA offer a more promising, ecological avenue for aquaculture, based on a circular economy, which may in turn increase the social acceptability of fish farming. The soils of Lakshadweep Islands are formed as a result of the fragmentation of coral limestone, that is carbonate-rich, with neutral pH, but poor in plant nutrients. Coconut palm (Cocos nucifera L.) is the main crop cultivated, supporting the life and livelihood of the islanders. No external fertilizer application or major plant protection measures are adopted for their cultivation as the Islands were declared to go organic decades back. Yet, Lakshadweep has one of the highest productivity of coconut compared with other coconut growing areas in India. Therefore, a question arises: how is such a high coconut productivity sustained? We try to answer by estimating in three main islands (i) the nutrients added to the soil via the litter generated by coconut palms and (ii) the role of soil microbiota, including arbuscular mycorrhizae, for the high productivity. Our results indicated that, besides adding a substantial quantum of organic carbon, twice the needed amount of nitrogen, extra 20% phosphorus to the already P-rich soils, 43–45% of potassium required by palms could be easily met by the total coconut biomass residues returned to the soil. Principal Component Analysis showed that soil organic carbon %, potassium, and organic carbon added via the palm litter and AM spore load scored >± 0.95 in PC1, whereas, available K in the soil, bacteria, actinomycetes, phosphate solubilizers and fluorescent pseudomonads scored above >± 0.95 in PC2. Based on our analysis, we suggest that the autochthonous nutrients added via the coconut biomass residues, recycled by the soil microbial communities, could be one of the main reasons for sustaining a high productivity of the coconut palms in Lakshadweep Islands, in the absence of any external fertilizer application, mimicking a semi-closed-loop forest ecosystem. A stochastic nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton model with instantaneous nutrient recycling is proposed and analyzed in this paper. When the nutrient uptake function and the grazing function are linear and the ingested phytoplankton is completely absorbed by the zooplankton, we establish two stochastic thresholds R 0 S and R 1 S , which completely determine the persistence and extinction of the plankton. That is, if R 0 S < 1 , both the phytoplankton and the zooplankton eventually are eliminated; if R 0 S > 1 and R 1 S < 1 , the phytoplankton is persistent in mean but the zooplankton is extinct; while for R 1 S > 1 , the entire system is persistent in mean. Furthermore, sufficient criteria for the existence of ergodic stationary distribution of the model are obtained and the persistent levels of the plankton are estimated. Numeric simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results and to conclude our study. Our results suggest that environmental noise may cause the local bloom of phytoplankton, which surprisingly can be used to explain the formation of algal blooms to some extent. Moreover, we find that the nonlinear nutrient uptake function and grazing function may take credit for the periodic succession of blooms regardless of whether they are in the absence or presence of the environmental noises. Miscanthus, a C4 perennial rhizomatous grass, is capable of growing in varied climates and soil types in Europe, including on marginal lands. It can produce high yields with low nutrient inputs when harvested after complete senescence. Senescence induction and rate depend on complex genetic, environmental, and management interactions. To explore these interactions, we analysed four miscanthus hybrids (two novel seed‐based hybrids, GRC 3 [Miscanthus sinensis × sinensis] and GRC 14 [M. sacchariflorus × sinensis]; GRC 15, a novel M. sacchariflorus × sinensis clone; and GRC 9, a standard Miscanthus × giganteus clone) in Italy, Croatia, Germany and the UK. Over all trial locations and hybrids, the average aboveground biomass of the 3‐year‐old stands in August 2020 was 15 t DM ha−1 with nutrient contents of 7.6 mg N g−1 and 14.6 mg K g−1. As expected, delaying the harvest until spring reduced overall yield and nutrient contents (12 t DM ha−1, 3.3 mg N g−1, and 5.5 mg K g−1). At lower latitudes, the late‐ripening M. sacchariflorus × sinensis GRC 14 and GRC 15 combined high yields with low nutrient contents. At the most elevated latitude location (UK), the early‐ripening M. sinensis × sinensis combined high biomass yields with low nutrient offtakes. The clonal Miscanthus × giganteus with intermediate flowering and senescence attained similar low nutrient contents by spring harvest at all four locations. Seasonal changes in yield and nutrient levels analysed in this study provide: (1) a first step towards recommending hybrids for specific locations and end uses in Europe; (2) crucial data for determination of harvest time and practical steps in the valorization of biomass; and (3) key sustainability data for life cycle assessments. Nutrients can be circulated back to agriculture from waste streams through anaerobic digestion and digestate processing. Digestate processing, however, is making slow progress as circulated nutrient products have not been cost competitive compared to fossil fertilizers and not designed from the farmer's perspective to truly match with the regional nutrient need. In this study, the aim is to assess apply mathematical optimization to the design of a cost-optimal processing route for a biogas plant's digestate to produce fertilizer products based on specified regional needs. Another aim is to analyze whether such a cost-optimal solution can fully exploit the nutrient recycling potential, that is, the efficiency of such a solution in returning nutrients to agriculture. The results indicate that mathematical optimization allows the design of a cost-optimal digestate production routes based on the region's nutrient need and characteristics. The true cost optimum was found for a design combining three processing technologies and producing four nutrient products, which when mixed, would fulfil farmer's fertilization needs. However, there seems to be a conflict between an optimal economic design and a full exploitation of recycling potential as only 25% of the digestate's phosphorus was utilized within the case region. This is because only 29% of the digestate mass was used and processed as fertilizer, as the concentration of required nutrients was deemed too low for economic use. • >150 organic metabolites are oxidised over chloride and urea in unconcentrated, non-hydrolysed urine acidified to pH 3.0. • Heat-activated peroxydisulphate removed >50% TOC and degraded >40% ΣOMs with <10% nitrogen loss. • Heating real, unconcentrated urine acidified to pH 3.0 at 90 °C for 1 h activated >90% of 60 mM peroxydisulphate. • Concentrated urine had lower persulfate activation but higher chloride & urea degradation compared to unconcentrated urine. The human urine metabolome is complex, containing a wide range of organic metabolites that affect treatment of urine collected in resource-oriented sanitation systems. In this study, an advanced oxidation process involving heat-activated peroxydisulphate was used to selectively oxidise organic metabolites in urine over urea and chloride. Initial experiments evaluated optimal conditions (peroxydisulphate dose, temperature, time, pH) for activation of peroxydisulphate in unconcentrated, non-hydrolysed synthetic urine and real urine acidified to pH 3.0. Subsequent experiments determined the fate of 268 endogenous organic metabolites (OMs) and removal of COD from unconcentrated and concentrated real urine (80–90% mass reduced by evaporation). The results revealed >90% activation of 60 mM peroxydisulphate in real unconcentrated urine heated to 90 °C for 1 h, resulting in 43% ΣOMs degradation, 22% COD removal and 56% total organic carbon removal, while >94% of total nitrogen and >97% of urea in real unconcentrated urine were recovered. The mechanism of urea degradation was identified to be chemical hydrolysis to ammonia, with the rate constant for this reaction determined to be 1.9 × 10−6 s−1 at pH 3.0 and 90 °C. Treating concentrated real urine resulted in similar removal of COD, ΣOMs degradation and total nitrogen loss as observed for unconcentrated urine, but with significantly higher chloride oxidation and chemical hydrolysis of urea. Targeted metabolomic analysis revealed that peroxydisulphate treatment degraded 157 organic metabolites in urine, of which 67 metabolites were degraded by >80%. The rate constant for the reaction of sulphate radicals with oxidisable endogenous organic metabolites in urine was estimated to exceed 108 M−1 s−1. These metabolites were preferentially oxidised over chloride and urea in acidified, non-hydrolysed urine treated with peroxydisulphate. Overall, the findings support the development of emerging urine recycling technologies, including alkaline/acid dehydration and reverse osmosis, where the presence of endogenous organic urine metabolites significantly influences treatment parameters such as energy demand and product purity. Global increase in aquaculture production has created a need to reduce its environmental impacts. Nutrients could be recycled especially at land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) by cultivating green microalgae in aquaculture effluent. However, microalgae are difficult to harvest. As a multi-trophic solution, mussels could be used in harvesting microalgae. We tested three European freshwater mussels (duck mussel Anodonta anatina, swan mussel A. cygnea, and swollen river mussel Unio tumidus) for filtering two common green microalgae (Monoraphidium griffithii and Selenastrum sp.) grown in RAS effluent. Mussels decreased microalgal concentrations in the tanks 42–83% over three consecutive trials. Algal concentrations at the end of each trial were lowest for both microalgae in tanks containing Anodonta mussels. Clearance rates were higher for Anodonta mussels than for U. tumidus. Mussels biodeposited more microalgae to tank bottoms when M. griffithii was filtered. Ammonium concentration decreased or did not change in tanks with M. griffithii, but increased in tanks containing Selenastrum sp. These results suggest that of the tested species Anodonta mussels and M. griffithii show best potential for RAS effluent bioremediation application. The objective of this review was to provide quantitative insights into algal growth and nutrient removal in anaerobic digestate. To synthesize the relevant literature, a meta-analysis was conducted using data from 58 articles to elucidate key factors that impact algal biomass productivity and nutrient removal from anaerobic digestate. On average, algal biomass productivity in anaerobic digestate was significantly lower than that in synthetic control media (p < 0.05) but large variation in productivity was observed. A mixed-effects multiple regression model across study revealed that biological or chemical pretreatment of digestate significantly increase productivity (p < 0.001). In contrast, the commonly used practice of digestate dilution was not a significant factor in the model. High initial total ammonia nitrogen suppressed algal growth (p = 0.036) whereas initial total phosphorus concentration, digestate sterilization, CO 2 supplementation, and temperature were not statistically significant factors. Higher growth corresponded with significantly higher NH 4 –N and phosphorus removal with a linear relationship of 6.4 mg NH 4 –N and 0.73 mg P removed per 100 mg of algal biomass growth (p < 0.001). The literature suggests that suboptimal algal growth in anaerobic digestate could be due to factors such as turbidity, high free ammonia, and residual organic compounds. This analysis shows that non-dilution approaches, such as biological or chemical pretreatment, for alleviating algal inhibition are recommended for algal digestate treatment systems. Sewage sludge management for fertilizer purposes can be a step in the circular phosphorus (P) economy. Using microbial solubilization in manufacturing fertilizers from recycled materials is an innovative approach with the potential to increase P compounds' bioavailability, and fertilizers from sewage sludge ash and P-solubilizing bacteria are promising products of this technology. In addition to P and a range of macronutrients, these fertilizers contain small amounts of micronutrients and potentially toxic elements. This paper discusses the effects of fertilizer on iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) content in soil, test plants (spring or winter wheat; grain and straw), weeds and post-harvest residues, based on field experiments. Treatments with conventional P fertilizers (superphosphate, phosphorite) and without P fertilization provided references. The tested biofertilizers containing the Bacillus megaterium or Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strain had no effect on total Fe and Al content in the soil or on the concentration of these elements in plant biomass when applied at P doses up to 35.2 kg ha–1. Autotrophs play an essential role in the cycling of carbon and nutrients, yet disease‐ecosystem relationships are often overlooked in these dynamics. Importantly, the availability of elemental nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus impacts infectious disease in autotrophs, and disease can induce reciprocal effects on ecosystem nutrient dynamics. Relationships linking infectious disease with ecosystem nutrient dynamics are bidirectional, though the interdependence of these processes has received little attention. We introduce disease‐mediated nutrient dynamics (DND) as a framework to describe the multiple, concurrent pathways linking elemental cycles with infectious disease. We illustrate the impact of disease–ecosystem feedback loops on both disease and ecosystem nutrient dynamics using a simple mathematical model, combining approaches from classical ecological (logistic and Droop growth) and epidemiological (susceptible and infected compartments) theory. Our model incorporates the effects of nutrient availability on the growth rates of susceptible and infected autotroph hosts and tracks the return of nutrients to the environment following host death. While focused on autotroph hosts here, the DND framework is generalizable to higher trophic levels. Our results illustrate the surprisingly complex dynamics of host populations, infection patterns, and ecosystem nutrient cycling that can arise from even a relatively simple feedback between disease and nutrients. Feedback loops in disease‐mediated nutrient dynamics arise via effects of infection and nutrient supply on host stoichiometry and population size. Our model illustrates how host growth rate, defense, and tissue chemistry can impact the dynamics of disease–ecosystem relationships. We use the model to motivate a review of empirical examples from autotroph–pathogen systems in aquatic and terrestrial environments, demonstrating the key role of nutrient–disease and disease–nutrient relationships in real systems. By assessing existing evidence and uncovering data gaps and apparent mismatches between model predictions and the dynamics of empirical systems, we highlight priorities for future research intended to narrow the persistent disciplinary gap between disease and ecosystem ecology. Future empirical and theoretical work explicitly examining the dynamic linkages between disease and ecosystem ecology will inform fundamental understanding for each discipline and will better position the field of ecology to predict the dynamics of disease and elemental cycles in the context of global change. Aquaculture has grown rapidly to play a crucial economic and social role and meet the increasing global demand for seafood. As aquaculture intensifies, there is increasing pressure to find more sustainable practices that save resources and reduce waste. Major wastes and by-products from aquaculture were quantified across a full range of farming types. Key opportunities for wastewater treatment and by-product recovery include nutrient recycling through a combination of biofilters, bioaccumulation and multitrophic systems. To support a sustainable intensification of aquaculture, improvements in by-product harvesting, accumulation and processing methods require further investigation. Likewise, energy generated from by-products can potentially support intensified production through land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). Future challenges faced by the reuse of side streams include control of food safety and gaining consumer acceptance. Combined with increases in resource use efficiency across the aquaculture sector, from feeding methodologies to product storage, nutrient recycling can enable aquaculture to contribute sustainably toward the nutritional requirements of billions of people over the next century. In streams, unionoid mussels and fish form aggregations that exert bottom‐up and top‐down effects on food webs, but the magnitude and spatial extent of their effects are controlled by species traits. Sedentary mussels live burrowed in the sediment in patchily distributed dense aggregations (mussel beds) where they filter seston and provide a local, relatively constant nutrient subsidy. In contrast, fish move on and off mussel beds, and thus comprise a transient nutrient subsidy.We asked how overlap between fish and mussels influences nutrient recycling and resource distribution in streams. We conducted an 8‐week study in experimental streams where we created mussel beds (comprised of two species, Actinonaias ligamentina and Amblema plicata), manipulated the occurrence of a grazing minnow (Campostoma anomalum), and tracked nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) and resource (algae, detritus, and chironomids) abundance up and downstream of the mussel beds.In general, neither consumer had strong effects on the concentration or spatial distribution of nutrients. Water turnover time in our experimental streams may have diluted fish and mussel nutrient excretion effects, making it difficult to detect spatial patterns during a given sampling period.Fish controlled the abundance and productivity of algae. In treatments without fish, large mats of filamentous algae formed early in the experiment. These algae senesced, decomposed, and were not replaced. When fish were present, algae consisted of attached biofilms with consistent biomass and spatial distribution over time.Although previous work has shown that mussels can have strong, seasonal bottom‐up effects on both primary and secondary production, our results suggested that adding grazing mobile fishes, led to a more consistent and homogenous supply of algal resources. Residue management is one of the most difficult tasks in the modern-mechanized agriculture with the intensification of cropping systems, which leads to reduced sowing window between two crops and farmers prefer in-situ burning of crop residues. Therefore, the present study was conducted to assess the effect of zero tillage (ZT) based residue management on soil health parameters in maize (Zea mays L.)–chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) rotation in black soils of central India. After 4 years of study, the soil bulk density was reduced by 3.0–10.2% and volumetric moisture content was improved by 10.2–19.3% at 0–10 cm soil depth in ZT with residue over conventional tillage (CT). The soil organic carbon and labile carbon were increased by 13.6–61.7% and 6.0–22.0%, respectively, at 0–10 cm soil depths. Similarly, ZT with residue increased the KMnO4-N, Olsen-P and NH4OAc-K, and total fungal and actinomycetes density in surface soil as compared to CT. Thus, our study advocates that ZT with residue retention (1.8–5.4 Mg ha–1 maize and 0.8–2.4 Mg ha–1 chickpea residue) should be implemented for sustainable soil health in Vertisols (Typic Haplustert) of central India and other similar agro-ecological systems. The massive amounts of nutrients that are currently released into the environment as waste have the potential to be recovered and transformed from a liability into an asset through photosynthesis, industry insight, and ecologically informed engineering design aimed at circularity. Fast-growing aquatic plant-like vegetation such as microalgae and duckweed have the capacity to enable local communities to simultaneously treat their own polluted water and retain nutrients that underlie the productivity of modern agriculture. Not only are they highly effective at upcycling waste nutrients into protein-rich biomass, microalgae and duckweed also offer excellent opportunities to substitute or complement conventional synthetic fertilizers, feedstocks in biorefineries, and livestock feed while simultaneously reducing the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions that would otherwise be required for their production and transport to farms. Integrated systems growing microalgae or duckweed on manure or agricultural runoff, and subsequent reuse of the harvested biomass to produce animal feed, soil amendments, and biofuels, present a sustainable approach to advancing circularity in agricultural systems. This article provides a review of past efforts toward advancing the circular nitrogen bioeconomy using microalgae- and duckweed-based technologies to treat, recover, and upcycle nutrients from agricultural waste. The majority of the work with microalgae- and duckweed-based wastewater treatment has been concentrated on municipal and industrial effluents, with <50% of studies focusing on agricultural wastewater. In terms of scale, more than 91% of the microalgaebased studies and 58% of the duckweed-based studies were conducted at laboratory-scale. While the range of nutrient removals achieved using these technologies depends on various factors such as species, light, and media concentrations, 65% to 100% of total N, 82% to 100% of total P, 98% to 100% of NO3 -, and 96% to 100% of NH3/NH4+ can be removed by treating wastewater with microalgae. For duckweed, removals of 75% to 98% total N, 81% to 93% total P, 72% to 98% NH3/NH4+, and 57% to 92% NO3 - have been reported. Operating conditions such as hydraulic retention time, pH, temperature, and the presence of toxic nutrient levels and competing species in the media should be given due consideration when designing these systems to yield optimum benefits. In addition to in-depth studies and scientific advancements, policies encouraging supply chain development, market penetration, and consumer acceptance of these technologies are vitally needed to overcome challenges and to yield substantial socio-economic and environmental benefits from microalgae- and duckweed-based agricultural wastewater treatment. Wastewater reuse from fertirrigation has become a new strategy for sustainable crop production, especially because there is a need to save fresh water. It can also reduce fertilizer costs and environmental pollution. This work aimed to evaluate the production of tomato and eggplant seedlings irrigated with wastewater reuse from fertirrigation. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design in a 2 × 4 factorial scheme with four replicates, where each replicate was represented by 25 seedlings. Treatments were represented by two crops (tomato and eggplant) and four concentrations of fertirrigation wastewater leachate (Treatment 1 (T1): 25%; Treatment 2 (T2): 50%; Treatment 3 (T3): 75% and Treatment 4 (T4): 100%). Seedlings were evaluated for the following parameters: number of leaves, seedling height, basal stem diameter, leaf area, total dry mass, and relative water content. With the exception of the basal stem diameter, eggplant seedlings were affected by leachate concentrations for all the other parameters evaluated, while tomato seedlings presented significant responses for all variables. It was observed that the use of concentrations between 50 and 75% of fertirrigation wastewater leachate can be a possible alternative to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers in the production of tomato and eggplant seedlings. Integrating a combination of organic matter management (OMM) practices can increase soil fertility, biomass, and nutrient recycling, but evidence of this potential is limited. This study tested the impact of integrating a combination of OMM practices on soil fertility, biomass, and nutrient recycling on smallholder farms. Following a randomised complete block design, a four-season experiment was conducted in 2018-2019 on 10 farms. The treatments (T) included T1: cowpea-maize-bean-maize rotation; T2: cowpea-maize-bean-maize rotation + farmyard manure; T3: Faidherbia albida alleys + cowpea-maize-bean-maize rotation; T4: F. albida alleys + cowpea-maize-bean-maize rotation + farmyard manure; and T5 (control): maize monocrop with diammonium phosphate application at 50 kg/ha application rate. T1-T4 are the OMM practices. The maize in T2-T4 was undersown with Mucuna pruriens. Soil fertility parameters (i.e. pH, water holding capacity, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), biomass, and nutrients in the biomass were determined. There were no differences in soil fertility parameters among all treatments (P > 0.05). From the second to the fourth season, biomass was consistently higher under T3 and T4 than in other treatments. Moreover, the nutrients in biomass were higher in T3 and T4 than in other treatments, an indicator that OMM practices with alley crops can increase nutrient recycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Twelve concrete ponds were stocked with pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) each weighing about 0.1g and grown for 77 days. The effects of autotrophs, floating beds of water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) and microalgae (Chlorella pyrenoidosa) on water purification and shrimp growth were assessed. The results showed that the water quality of aquaculture water with water spinach (S1), aquaculture water with chlorella (S2), and aquaculture water with water spinach and chlorella (S3) were significantly better than that of Aquaculture water without vegetation and chlorella (S0). The combination of water spinach and chlorella (S3) was able to keep ammonia and nitrite nitrogen levels below 1.0 mg/L and 0.1 mg/L, respectively. These low levels were not lethal or detrimental to the growth of the white shrimp. The roots of the water spinach were the vital organs for the removal of N and P. Sixty percent of the removed portion of N and P accumulated in the roots of the water spinach. The survival rate and mean harvest weight of shrimp from S1, and S3 was significantly higher than that from S0, and S2. In addition, in S3 the immunity of the shrimp was improved due to the formation of similar biological floccules around the roots and thus increasing their survival rate. Microalgae can produce biofuels, nutriceuticals, pigments and many other products, but commercialization has been limited by the cost of growing, harvesting and processing algal biomass. Nutrients, chiefly nitrogen and phosphorus, are a key cost for growing microalgae, but these nutrients are present in abundance in municipal wastewater where they pose environmental problems if not removed. This is not a traditional review article; rather, it is a fact-based set of suggestions that will have to be investigated by scientists and engineers. It is suggested that if microalgae were grown as biofilms rather than as planktonic cells, and if internal illumination rather than external illumination were employed, then the use of microalgae may provide useful improvements to the wastewater treatment process. The use of microalgae to remove nutrients from wastewater has been demonstrated, but has not yet been widely implemented due to cost, and because microalgae derived from wastewater treatment has not yet been demonstrated as a commercial source for value-added products. Future facilities are likely to be called Municipal Resource Recovery Facilities as wastewater will increasingly be viewed as a resource for water, biofuels, fertilizer, monitoring public health and value-added products. • In UV-free controls, urease activity in water and synthetic urine was similar, and higher than in real urine. • No urease activity was detected in water, synthetic urine and real urine after UV treatment. • Electrical energy demand to inactivate urease in real urine was 25-fold higher than synthetic urine. • Organic metabolites in real urine absorbed radiant flux and inhibited urease inactivation. In source-separating sanitation systems, inhibiting urease activity prevents enzymatic urea hydrolysis and volatilisation of ammonia when urine is concentrated by evaporation. This study tested UV-based photoinactivation as a novel alternative to existing methods of inactivating urease that require dosing urine with acid, base or oxidants. The enzymatic activity of jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) urease in water, synthetic fresh urine and real fresh urine was investigated, with and without a 15 W low-pressure UV lamp that emitted 185 nm and 254 nm radiation. In UV-free controls, urea was hydrolysed at a rate of 3.2 × 10−3 mmol mg urease −1 min−1, 3.3 × 10−3 mmol mg urease −1 min−1 and 2.0 × 10−3 mmol mg urease −1 min−1 in water, synthetic urine and real urine, respectively. In the presence of UV, no urease activity was detected in any matrix. A UV irradiation time of 1.3 and 3.3 min was needed for inactivating urease in water and synthetic urine, respectively, whereas an irradiation time of 71 min was needed for inactivating urease in real urine. Overall, the electrical energy demand for photoinactivation of urease in real human urine was estimated to be 29.1 kWh m−3. Photolysis and photo-oxidation of amino acid residues at the active site of the enzyme were likely reasons for inactivation. Organic metabolites in real urine affected photoinactivation by (i) absorbing radiation between 190 nm and 400 nm, which reduced incident radiant flux; and (ii) scavenging hydroxyl radicals, which impeded oxidative damage to the enzyme. Overall, the findings demonstrate the feasibility of on-site treatment using a low-pressure UV lamp for inactivating urease in freshly excreted urine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Five systems (Chlorella vulgaris , T1; C. vulgaris + S395-2 + Clonostachys rosea, T2; C. vulgaris + S395-2 + Ganoderma lucidum , T3; C. vulgaris + S395-2 + Pleurotus pulmonarius , T4; and C. vulgaris + S395-2, T5) were established, and optimal conditions and effective symbiosis were applied to improve antibiotic and nutrient removal. Consortium growth was T2 > T3 > T5 > T4 > T1, while GA impact ranked 50 mg L–1 > 20 mg L–1 > 80 mg L–1 > 0 mg L–1. After 7 days at 50 mg L–1 GAs, total nitrogen (TN), NH 4 -N, NO 3 -N, and total phosphorous (TP) removal reached 85.97 %, 78.08 %, 86.59 %, and 94.39 %, respectively. Florfenicol, oxytetracycline hydrochloride, ofloxacin, and sulfamethoxazole removal efficiencies were 67.77 %, 98.29 %, 90.47 %, and 94.92 %, respectively. Phosphorus (P) in societal waste streams can be recycled and used as recycled P fertilisers (RPFs). When developing new technologies for P recycling, life cycle assessment (LCA) can be used to assess their environmental impact and support environmentally friendly decisions. In LCA calculations, inventory factors describe, for example, the emissions, resource requirements and potential substitution of products. The Phosphorus Life Cycle Inventory (PLCI) model is a tool for estimating such inventory factors for the use of RPFs. The main objective of this study was to develop the PLCI model from its previous parameterisation for Denmark to make it applicable to all countries and regions of the EU. This was undertaken by considering parameters that describe regional conditions affecting the loss of P, crop P uptake and potential mineral fertiliser substitution. Such parameters include soil type, soil P status, soil erosion, groundwater leaching, crop types, productivity and crop P concentrations. Several RPFs were incorporated into the model, including coefficients describing the partitioning to the labile, plant-available P fraction. To illustrate the applicability of the model, a case study was performed. Applications of RPFs were modelled in the Copenhagen region in Denmark and the Piedmont region in Italy. The higher soil erosion rate in Piedmont resulted in over six times greater P loss than in Copenhagen. The difference in P fertilisation practice between the regions had a strong impact on the mineral fertiliser substitutions. The results point to the importance of defining the fertilisation regime of the region being modelled, and this is now possible with the new, more dynamic version of PLCI. In conclusion, the new PLCI 2.0 model provides a dynamic tool for LCA practitioners to estimate region-specific inventory factors for RPFs. The model is relatively easy to use and captures differences between fertilisers with varying P availability and between applications in different regions of the EU.
