Floaters are sexually mature individuals that are not able to reproduce by defending breeding resources. Floaters often visit active nests, probably to gather public information or to compete for a nesting site. We tested the hypothesis that floaters preferentially prospect nests in which they have a better chance of taking over, and that they do so by assessing the owners' resource holding potential (RHP). We manipulated the flight capacity of male and female breeders in a population of spotless starlings (Sturnus unicolor) by clipping two flight feathers per wing before egg laying, thus increasing their wing-load and likely impairing their condition. We subsequently monitored breeder and floater activity by means of transponder readers during the nestling period. We found that nests owned by wing-clipped males were visited by a greater number of male floaters than control nests. This effect was absent in the case of wing-clipped females. The number of male floaters also increased with increasing nestling age and number of parental visits. The experiment shows that male floaters preferentially prospect nests in which the owner shows a reduced RHP, a strategy that likely allows them to evict weak owners and take over their nests for future reproductive attempts.

Background: Understanding the role of species identity in interactions among individuals is crucial for assessing the productivity and stability of mixed forests over time. However, there is limited knowledge concerning the variation in competitive effect and response of different species along climatic gradients. In this study, we investigated the importance of climate, tree size, and competition on the growth of three tree species: spruce (Picea abies), fir (Abies alba), and beech (Fagus sylvatica), and examined their competitive response and effect along a climatic gradient. Methods: We selected 39 plots distributed across the European mountains with records of the position and growth of 5,759 individuals. For each target species, models relating tree growth to tree size, climate and competition were proposed. Competition was modelled using a neighbourhood competition index that considered the effects of inter- and intraspecific competition on target trees. Competitive responses and effects were related to climate. Likelihood methods and information theory were used to select the best model. Results: Our findings revealed that competition had a greater impact on target species growth than tree size or climate. Climate did influence the competitive effects of neighbouring species, but it did not affect the target species' response to competition. The strength of competitive effects varied along the gradient, contingent on the identity of the interacting species. When the target species exhibited an intermediate competitive effect relative to neighbouring species, both higher inter- than intraspecific competitive effects and competition reduction occurred along the gradient. Notably, species competitive effects were most pronounced when the target species’ growth was at its peak and weakest when growing conditions were far from their maximum. Animals with large energy requirements are forced to optimize their hunting strategy, which may result in differentiation of the diet between sexes and across seasons. Here, we examined spatiotemporal variation in the diet of both sexes of the Pond Bat Myotis dasycneme, a species known to have spatial segregation of sexes when the young are born and lactating. Fecal pellets were collected from live animals for a period of 15 years at various locations in the Netherlands. A total of 535 pellets were successfully analyzed by microscopy and an additional 160 pellets by DNA metabarcoding. Morphological and molecular analyses showed that the diet of pregnant and lactating pond bats differed significantly from the diet of females with no reproductive investment. Further analyses of the data showed that pregnant female pond bats are highly dependent on small prey and pupae, mainly nonbiting midges and mosquitoes (Diptera: Chironomidae and Culicidae). These insects can be found in large quantities in peatlands intersected with shallow waterways, the habitat type in which female pond bats were observed more often than males. Our results suggest that during pregnancy the spatial segregation of sexes coincides with sex-specific diets, which might reflect habitat selection based on energy requirements, in addition to lowered intraspecific competition.

Marine microorganisms have the potential to disperse widely with few obvious barriers to gene flow. However, among microalgae, several studies have demonstrated that species can be highly genetically structured with limited gene flow among populations, despite hydrographic connectivity. Ecological differentiation and local adaptation have been suggested as drivers of such population structure. Here we tested whether multiple strains from two genetically distinct Baltic Sea populations of the diatom Skeletonema marinoi showed evidence of local adaptation to their local environments: the estuarine Bothnian Sea and the marine Kattegat Sea. We performed reciprocal transplants of multiple strains between culture media based on water from the respective environments, and we also allowed competition between strains of estuarine and marine origin in both salinities. When grown alone, both marine and estuarine strains performed best in the high-salinity environment, and estuarine strains always grew faster than marine strains. This result suggests local adaptation through countergradient selection, that is, genetic effects counteract environmental effects. However, the higher growth rate of the estuarine strains appears to have a cost in the marine environment and when strains were allowed to compete, marine strains performed better than estuarine strains in the marine environment. Thus, other traits are likely to also affect fitness. We provide evidence that tolerance to pH could be involved and that estuarine strains that are adapted to a more fluctuating pH continue growing at higher pH than marine strains.

Individuals are attracted to high-quality habitat patches where they compete for high-quality breeding sites. Since failures in contests to secure a site may prevent individuals from breeding, we hypothesised that attraction to and competition for high-quality habitats could shape breeding propensity. 2. We then applied integrated population modelling to quantify annual fluctuations in population mean breeding success, breeding propensity and number of individuals by breeding status (prebreeders, breeders, skippers, and immigrants), and tested our predictions. 4. Plant interactions are among the fundamental processes shaping the structure and functioning of ecosystems as they modulate competitive dynamics. However, the connection between the response of individual growth to neighbours and to environmental conditions and the mechanisms determining interactions in monospecific stands remain poorly understood. Here, we followed a phenotypic-based approach to disentangle the effect of plant size, neighbourhood interactions and microhabitat effects on Pinus sylvestris growth and traits, as well as their spatial variation of growth. We mapped all adult trees (1002 pines) in a 2 ha stand and measured their height, DBH and crown projection. For each individual, we assessed its growth and a competition index in relation to the closest neighbours. Soil chemical and physical properties and ground cover were also measured in a grid within the stand. We analysed the effects of tree size, neighbour competition and microhabitat variation on tree growth with a linear model. We also used spatial mark-correlation functions to explore the spatial dependence of tree age, secondary growth and phenotypic traits. Our results showed that trees with close neighbours displayed lower growth rates, whilst individuals with larger growths appeared scattered throughout the stand. Moreover, we found that growth depended on competition, tree height and crown area while tree growth poorly correlated with age or microhabitat conditions. Our findings highlight the importance of forest structure, in regulating inter-tree competition and growth in a Mediterranean pure stand and they provide insight into the causes and consequences of intraspecific variation in this system.

[Abstract] Nutrients are often released heterogeneously over time (e.g., in pulses) in natural habitats. Different genotypes of the same plant species may vary in their responses to temporal nutrient heterogeneity so that temporal nutrient heterogeneity may influence intraspecific interactions. To test effects of temporal nutrient heterogeneity on intra-genet (competition between ramets of the same genotype) and inter-genet competition (competition between ramets of different genotypes), we conducted a greenhouse experiment with five genotypes of the clonal herb Hydrocotyle vulgaris. We grew one ramet (no competition), two ramets of the same genotype or two ramets of different genotypes in a pot and supplied the pot with the same total amount of nutrients either homogeneously or heterogeneously. Results showed that temporal nutrient heterogeneity affected the growth and biomass allocation of some genotypes, but had no impact on those of other genotypes of H. vulgaris. These suggested that responses to temporal nutrient heterogeneity were different between genotypes of H. vulgaris. Temporal nutrient heterogeneity had little effect on intra-genet competition of H. vulgaris likely because ramets of the same genotype did not differ in their responses to temporal nutrient heterogeneity. However, temporal nutrient heterogeneity increased the competitive ability of the genotype of H. vulgaris with higher plant productivity. We conclude that temporal nutrient heterogeneity can influence intraspecific interactions of the clonal plant H. vulgaris by altering inter-genet competition, and this effect may further change population dynamics of the plant.

Recent reports of the presence of Ambrosia trifida (AT) in areas infested by A. artemisiifolia (AA) in Serbia warn of the impending establishment of a more damaging crop weed. Here, we test the potential competitive effects of these two weed species. We conducted a field competition study in 2016 and 2017 as a replacement series experiment arranged in a split plot, with main plots (20.5 m × 2 m) at total plant densities of 10 and 100 plants/m2, and sub-plots (3 m × 2 m) at the proportion of AT to AA of 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80 and 0:100. Individual plant biomass (IPB) for AT was lowest when grown in monoculture, while AA reached its highest IPB in its monoculture. With AT < 40%, the AT IPB was larger than (2017) or the same as AA (2016). With AT > 40%, its IPB decreased due to increased intraspecific competition. We obtained the lowest sub-plot biomass (SPB) of AT + AA in mixtures with 40:60 and 60:40 ratios, and also the highest SPB of other weed species. We show that despite a larger leaf area, AT may not fully replace AA and thus not become a new threat to crops, as it not only suffers from intraspecific competition at high densities, but also from interspecific competition with AA. Therefore, crops may benefit from a stable coexistence of both species as compared to highly dominant AT or AA. Further studies in the presence of crops are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Za razliku od A. artemisiifolia koja je kod nas široko rasprostranjena na poljoprivrednim i nepoljoprivrednim zemljištima, A. trifida je za sada lokalno prisutna na području Centralne Bačke. Skorija istraživanja ukazuju na potencijalnu mogućnost širenja A. trifida kod nas i u Evropi, što može biti ozbiljan rizik za agrofitocenoze i ekosistem u celini. Stoga, cilj ovih istraživanja bio je da se utvrdi jačina intra- i interspecijske kompeticije unutar i između A. trifida i A. artemisiifolia pri različitom odnosu njihove brojnosti u prirodnom staništu, odnosno da se proceni da li će A. trifida potisnuti A. artemisiifolia ukoliko se nađu na istom staništu, a takođe i kakve štete se mogu očekivati po useve i ekosistem. U poljskim uslovima (2016. i 2017. godine) na području Šapca, selo Dobrić, primenom modela zamenjujućih serija („Replacement design“) postavljen je ogled po potpuno slučajnom blok sistemu u četiri ponavljanja. Paralelno su rađena dva ogleda, jedan sa ukupnom brojnošću ambrozija (A. trifida + A. artemisiifolia) od 10 (mala gustina) i drugi od 100 (velika gustina) biljaka/m2 pri čemu je ispitivano šest tretmana, odnosno šest odnosa brojnosti A. trifida/A. artemisiifolia (%): 100/0, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60, 20/80, 0/100. Pored zadatog odnosa brojnosti ambrozija po jedinici površine ostali korovi koji su nicali nisu uklanjani da bi se utvrdio efekat interakcije A. trifida i A. artemisiifolia na njihov rast i razviće. Na osnovu vegetativnih (visina i širina biljaka, broj listova, suva masa) i generativnih parametara (broj glavica i cvetova, broj i masa semena) tokom tri ocene (jul, avgust, septembar) proučavana je inter- i intraspecijska kompeticija A. trifida i A. artemisiifolia biljaka. U drugoj eksperimentalnoj godini (2017.), usled povoljnijih meteoroloških prilika, kod obe ambrozije, u obe gustine i u svim tretma, Ambrosia trifida L. and A. artemisiifolia L. belong to allochthonous invasive weed species, and as newcomers in colonized areas, often cause great damage to the biodiversity of indigenous flora, as well as to plant production. Unlike A. artemisiifolia, which is widespread in our country on agricultural and non-agricultural land, A. trifida is currently locally present in the area of Central Bačka. Recent research indicates the potential for the spread of A. trifida in our country and Europe, which can be a serious risk for agrophytocenoses and whole ecosystems. Therefore, these studies aimed to determine the strength of intra- and interspecies competition within and between A. trifida and A. artemisiifolia, at different ratios of their presence in a natural habitat, i.e. to assess whether A. trifida will suppress A. artemisiifolia if found in the same habitat, and what level of damage to crops and ecosystems can be expected. In field conditions (during 2016 and 2017) in the area of Šabac, in village of Dobrić, a trial was set up according to the completely random block system with four repetitions, using the replacement series model (Replacement design). Two experiments were performed at the same time, one with a total number of ragweed (A. trifida + A. artemisiifolia) of 10 (low density) and the other of 100 (high density) plants/m2, where six treatments and six A. trifida/A. artemisiifolia (%) ratios were examined: 100/0, 80/20, 60/40, 40/60, 20/80, 0/100. In addition to the given ratio of the number of ragweeds per area unit, other weeds that sprouted were not removed to determine the effect of the interaction of A. trifida and A. artemisiifolia on their growth and development. Seastars are opportunistic predators that feed on bivalve molluscs and other invertebrates. In a dynamic system like the sublitoral of the rocky shores near Concarneau (South Brittany, France) there are several parameters possibly influencing the choice of prey like the tides, abundance of seastars as well as abundance of the different prey species. In two different experimental setups (five aquaria with one individual each and two aquaria with about 25 individuals each) we investigated the prey preferences of Marthasterias glacialis. We wanted to find out whether there are any prey preferences at all and if so, whether these preferences were depending on individual predator size and on intraspecific competition. The sea stars were offered 6 different prey species: Magallana gigas, Patella spec., Mytilus edulis, Phorcus lineatus, Littorina obtusata and Chthalamus spec. The results show that Mytilus edulis and Patella spec. are the most preferred prey species. In addition, our observations suggest that intraspecific competition has an influence on prey choice with a preference for organisms to be subdued and eaten in a shorter amount of time. Concluding we can say that under laboratory conditions the sea star M. glacialis shows prey preferences. Those are slightly depending on individual size and intraspecific competition. Preceding work (Gianguzza et al., 2016) supports to expect those findings to be at least in parts applicable to the natural habitat of M. glacialis., Seesterne sind opportunistische Raubtiere, die sich von Muscheln und anderen Wirbellosen ernähren. In einem dynamischen System wie dem Sublitoral der felsigen Küste bei Concarneau (Südbretagne, Frankreich) gibt es mehrere Parameter, die die Wahl der Beute beeinflussen können, wie die Gezeiten, die Häufigkeit von Seesternen sowie die Häufigkeit der verschiedenen Beutearten. In zwei verschiedenen Versuchsanordnungen (fünf Aquarien mit je einem Individuum und zwei Aquarien mit jeweils ca. 25 Individuen) haben wir die Beutepräferenzen von Marthasterias glacialis untersucht. Wir wollten herausfinden, ob es überhaupt Beutepräferenzen gibt und wenn ja, ob diese Präferenzen von der individuellen Räubergröße und von intraspezifischer Konkurrenz abhängen. Den Seesternen wurden 6 verschiedene Beutearten angeboten: Magallana gigas, Patella spec., Mytilus edulis, Phorcus lineatus, Littorina obtusata und Chthalamus spec. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Mytilus edulis und Patella spec. die am meisten bevorzugten Beutetiere sind. Darüber hinaus deuten unsere Beobachtungen darauf hin, dass die intraspezifische Konkurrenz einen Einfluss auf die Beutewahl hat, wobei Organismen bevorzugt werden, die in kürzerer Zeit unterdrückt und gefressen werden können. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass der Seestern M. glacialis unter Laborbedingungen Beutepräferenzen zeigt. Diese hängen leicht von der individuellen Größe und der intraspezifischen Konkurrenz ab. Introduction. Arracacha (Arracacia xanthorrhiza Bancroft) a promising crop due to its nutritional and gastronomic relevance. Population density is an agronomic practice that increases water and radiation use efficiencies, maximizes the yield, and crop profitability. However, the selection of the optimal population density based on physiological, agronomic, and economic criteria for arracacha has not been studied. Objective. To describe the effect of different population densities on the physiology, yield, and profitability of arracacha. Materials and methods. The experiment was conducted in Cajamarca, Colombia in 2019. There, the soil water potential, relative chlorophyll content, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, leaf temperature depression, photosynthetic reflectance index, leaf area index, the fraction of light interception, light extinction coefficient, cracking index, yield, and profitability were evaluated. Results. The results showed that high population densities did not generate water deficit because there were no significant differences for the soil water potential, leaf temperature depression, and photosynthetic reflectance index. Furthermore, no nutritional deficiencies were evidenced because the relative chlorophyll content (<32 SPAD) was higher at the critical level. Due to this, no limitations were observed in leaf gas exchange processes. However, the densities of 25,000 and 30,000 plants ha-1 showed a higher fraction of light interception due to the increase in the leaf area index; this allowed to obtain a higher yield at these densities. Conclusion. The maximum yield (41.96 t ha-1) and profitability (US$ 15,333.06 ha-1) were reached with a population density of 22,222 plants ha-1., Introducción. La arracacha (Arracacia xanthorrhiza Bancroft) es un cultivo promisorio por su relevancia nutricional y gastronómica. La densidad poblacional es una práctica agronómica que aumenta la eficiencia del uso del agua y la radiación, maximiza el rendimiento y la rentabilidad de los cultivos. Sin embargo, no se ha estudiado para la arracacha la selección de la densidad poblacional óptima basada en criterios fisiológicos, agronómicos y económicos. Objetivo. Describir el efecto de diferentes densidades poblacionales sobre la fisiología, el rendimiento y la rentabilidad de la arracacha. Materiales y métodos. El experimento se realizó en Cajamarca-Colombia durante el 2019. Allí se evaluó el potencial hídrico del suelo, y en arracacha el contenido relativo de clorofila, la fotosíntesis, la conductancia estomática, la eficiencia en el uso del agua, la depresión de la temperatura de la hoja, el índice de reflectancia fotosintética, el índice de área foliar, la fracción de intercepción de luz, el coeficiente de extinción de luz, el índice de agrietamiento, el rendimiento y la rentabilidad. Resultados. Los resultados mostraron que las altas densidades poblacionales no generaron déficit hídrico porque no hubo diferencias significativas en el potencial hídrico del suelo, la depresión de la temperatura foliar y el índice de reflectancia fotosintética. Además, no se evidenciaron deficiencias nutricionales porque el contenido relativo de clorofila (<32 SPAD) fue mayor al nivel crítico. Debido a esto, no se observaron limitaciones en los procesos de intercambio de gases. Sin embargo, las densidades de 25 000 y 30 000 plantas ha-1 mostraron una mayor fracción de intercepción de luz debido al aumento del índice de área foliar; esto permitió obtener un mayor rendimiento a estas densidades. Conclusión. El máximo rendimiento (41,96 t ha-1) y rentabilidad (US$ 15 333,06 ha-1), se alcanzaron con una densidad poblacional de 22 222 plantas ha-1.

Aggregation of conspecific predators sharing a common prey, influences their bodyweights. We investigated the influence of intraspecific competition of adult ladybirds of Coccinella transversalis Fabricius on their bodyweight feeding on rusty plum aphid, Hysteroneura setariae (Thomas). Adult males and females consumed a significantly greater number of aphids with increase in predator-density, however, the aphid-consumption per predator declined with this increase. The weight gain per predator also decreased linearly with increase in the density of both male and female predators. This indicates that the weight-gain of the predator is a function of the prey consumed. The searching efficiency decreased with increase in predator density due to mutual inference. The mutual interference constants for adult male and female ladybirds were −0.419 and −0.546, respectively. The females consumed a greater number of aphids than males. The killing power of the ladybird denoted by the k-value increased curvilinearly with increase in predator density. We conclude that prey consumption is a function of body size and that the offspring of those that aggregate at low densities in prey-rich habitats develop into large adults.

Lactation is the most energetically costly component of maternal investment in mammals. For large temperate herbivores, summer is characterized by relatively abundant forage but also high energetic needs for lactation and recovery from winter mass loss. We experimentally restricted food supply by about 20%, and compared the nursing and foraging behaviours of control and food-restricted adult female white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, and their fawns during lactation. We considered two fawn ages: 0–30 days (after which time spent suckling dropped markedly) and 30–80 days (the end of the nursing period). From 0 to 30 days of age, food-restricted fawns performed 17 more suckling bouts/day and spent twice as much time suckling than control fawns. Compared with controls, food-restricted fawns gained 26% less mass from birth to 80 days. Body growth was inversely related to time spent suckling and to the frequency of nursing bouts, but positively related to survival. Food-restricted fawns had twice as many suckling solicitations and rejected suckling attempts as control fawns. Solicitations for allosuckling and successful allosuckling bouts were also more than twice as high in the food-restricted group as in the control group. Mothers and fawns from the food-restricted group spent more time foraging than control individuals. We conclude that a reduction in food availability during summer, which may occur under high intraspecific competition, should lead to drastic changes in foraging and nursing behaviours as well as reduced growth rate of juveniles of large northern herbivores.

To describe the effect of different population densities on the physiology, yield, and profitability of arracacha. Materials and methods. The experiment was conducted in Cajamarca, Colombia in 2019. There, the soil water potential, relative chlorophyll content, photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, water use efficiency, leaf temperature depression, photosynthetic reflectance index, leaf area index, the fraction of light interception, light extinction coefficient, cracking index, yield, and profitability were evaluated. Results. The results showed that high population densities did not generate water deficit because there were no significant differences for the soil water potential, leaf temperature depression, and photosynthetic reflectance index. Furthermore, no nutritional deficiencies were evidenced because the relative chlorophyll content (<32 SPAD) was higher at the critical level. Due to this, no limitations were observed in leaf gas exchange processes. However, the densities of 25,000 and 30,000 plants ha-1 showed a higher fraction of light interception due to the increase in the leaf area index; this allowed to obtain a higher yield at these densities. Conclusion. The maximum yield (41.96 t ha-1) and profitability (US$ 15,333.06 ha-1) were reached with a population density of 22,222 plants ha-1., Introducción. La arracacha (Arracacia xanthorrhiza Bancroft) es un cultivo promisorio por su relevancia nutricional y gastronómica. La densidad poblacional es una práctica agronómica que aumenta la eficiencia del uso del agua y la radiación, maximiza el rendimiento y la rentabilidad de los cultivos. Sin embargo, no se ha estudiado para la arracacha la selección de la densidad poblacional óptima basada en criterios fisiológicos, agronómicos y económicos. Objetivo. Describir el efecto de diferentes densidades poblacionales sobre la fisiología, el rendimiento y la rentabilidad de la arracacha. Materiales y métodos. El experimento se realizó en Cajamarca-Colombia durante el 2019. Allí se evaluó el potencial hídrico del suelo, y en arracacha el contenido relativo de clorofila, la fotosíntesis, la conductancia estomática, la eficiencia en el uso del agua, la depresión de la temperatura de la hoja, el índice de reflectancia fotosintética, el índice de área foliar, la fracción de intercepción de luz, el coeficiente de extinción de luz, el índice de agrietamiento, el rendimiento y la rentabilidad. Resultados. Los resultados mostraron que las altas densidades poblacionales no generaron déficit hídrico porque no hubo diferencias significativas en el potencial hídrico del suelo, la depresión de la temperatura foliar y el índice de reflectancia fotosintética. Además, no se evidenciaron deficiencias nutricionales porque el contenido relativo de clorofila (<32 SPAD) fue mayor al nivel crítico. Debido a esto, no se observaron limitaciones en los procesos de intercambio de gases. Sin embargo, las densidades de 25 000 y 30 000 plantas ha-1 mostraron una mayor fracción de intercepción de luz debido al aumento del índice de área foliar; esto permitió obtener un mayor rendimiento a estas densidades. Conclusión. El máximo rendimiento (41,96 t ha-1) y rentabilidad (US$ 15 333,06 ha-1), se alcanzaron con una densidad poblacional de 22 222 plantas ha-1.

Seastars are opportunistic predators that feed on bivalve molluscs and other invertebrates. In a dynamic system like the sublitoral of the rocky shores near Concarneau (South Brittany, France) there are several parameters possibly influencing the choice of prey like the tides, abundance of seastars as well as abundance of the different prey species. In two different experimental setups (five aquaria with one individual each and two aquaria with about 25 individuals each) we investigated the prey preferences of Marthasterias glacialis. We wanted to find out whether there are any prey preferences at all and if so, whether these preferences were depending on individual predator size and on intraspecific competition. The sea stars were offered 6 different prey species: Magallana gigas, Patella spec., Mytilus edulis, Phorcus lineatus, Littorina obtusata and Chthalamus spec. The results show that Mytilus edulis and Patella spec. are the most preferred prey species. In addition, our observations suggest that intraspecific competition has an influence on prey choice with a preference for organisms to be subdued and eaten in a shorter amount of time. Concluding we can say that under laboratory conditions the sea star M. glacialis shows prey preferences. Those are slightly depending on individual size and intraspecific competition. Preceding work (Gianguzza et al., 2016) supports to expect those findings to be at least in parts applicable to the natural habitat of M. glacialis., Seesterne sind opportunistische Raubtiere, die sich von Muscheln und anderen Wirbellosen ernähren. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Mytilus edulis und Patella spec. die am meisten bevorzugten Beutetiere sind. Darüber hinaus deuten unsere Beobachtungen darauf hin, dass die intraspezifische Konkurrenz einen Einfluss auf die Beutewahl hat, wobei Organismen bevorzugt werden, die in kürzerer Zeit unterdrückt und gefressen werden können. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass der Seestern M. glacialis unter Laborbedingungen Beutepräferenzen zeigt. Recent reports of the presence of Ambrosia trifida (AT) in areas infested by A. artemisiifolia (AA) in Serbia warn of the impending establishment of a more damaging crop weed. Here, we test the potential competitive effects of these two weed species. We conducted a field competition study in 2016 and 2017 as a replacement series experiment arranged in a split plot, with main plots (20.5 m × 2 m) at total plant densities of 10 and 100 plants/m2, and sub-plots (3 m × 2 m) at the proportion of AT to AA of 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80 and 0:100. Individual plant biomass (IPB) for AT was lowest when grown in monoculture, while AA reached its highest IPB in its monoculture. With AT < 40%, the AT IPB was larger than (2017) or the same as AA (2016). With AT > 40%, its IPB decreased due to increased intraspecific competition. We obtained the lowest sub-plot biomass (SPB) of AT + AA in mixtures with 40:60 and 60:40 ratios, and also the highest SPB of other weed species. We show that despite a larger leaf area, AT may not fully replace AA and thus not become a new threat to crops, as it not only suffers from intraspecific competition at high densities, but also from interspecific competition with AA. Therefore, crops may benefit from a stable coexistence of both species as compared to highly dominant AT or AA. Further studies in the presence of crops are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Dominant species in intercropping experience less resource competition compared with its monoculture. This reduced competition for resources may allow cultivating the dominant species at an increased density in intercropping to obtain greater yield. However, experimental results are inconclusive when the optimal within row density in the sole crop is not well established. Here, we conducted a two-year experiment to test the hypothesis that optimal within row plant density of dominant species in intercropping would be higher in the intercrop than in the sole crop. We tested three maize densities (3, 4.5, and 6 plants m−1) in both sole maize and two replacement designed intercrops. The row configurations of two intercrops are two rows maize intercropped with four rows peanut (M2P4) and four rows maize intercropped with four rows peanut (M4P4). Peanut was grown at the same plant density of 12 plants m−1 row in both sole crop and intercrops. The results indicated that increasing maize density from the optimal density in monoculture is not worthy of promotion to improve yield in intercropping, which denied our hypothesis. The land equivalent ratios (LER) in the dry year (2017) were higher than the wet year (2016). Maize yields per unit area of the whole intercropping system were highest with densities of 4.5 and 6 plants m−1 row, with no significant difference between these two densities. Maximum maize yields in sole cropping were obtained with maize densities of 6 plants m−1 row. Intercropping provided higher yields at low and intermediate sole crop maize densities, but not at high sole crop maize density. Average land equivalent ratios at 3, 4.5, and 6 plants m−1 of maize were 1.09, 1.04, and 0.95 in 2016, and 1.07, 1.10, and 1.02 in 2017. Our results suggest that intercropping performs better at conditions with less resources than adequate resources.

The functioning of plant communities is strongly influenced by the number of species in the community and their spatial arrangement. This is because plants interact with their nearest neighbors and this interaction is expected to be stronger when the interacting individuals are ecologically similar in terms of resource use. Recent evidence shows that species richness alters the balance of intra- versus interspecific competition, but the effect of species richness, and phylogenetic and functional diversity on the spatial pattern of the plant communities remain less studied. Even far, how forest stand structure derived from past management practices can influence the relationship between species richness and spatial pattern is still unknown. Here, we evaluate the spatial distribution of woody individuals (DBH >7.5 cm) in 209 forest stands (i.e. plots) with an increasing level of species richness (from 1 up to 10 species) in six forest types along a latitudinal gradient in Europe. We used completely mapped plots to investigate the spatial pattern in each forest stand with point pattern techniques. We fitted linear models to analyze the effect of species richness (positively correlated with phylogenetic diversity) and functional diversity on tree spatial arrangements. We also controled this relationship by forest type and stand structure as a proxy of the management legacy. Our results showed a generalized positive effect of species richness and functional diversity on the degree of spatial clustering of trees, and on the spatial independence of tree sizes regardless of the forest type. Moreover, current tree spatial arrangements were still conditioned by its history of management; however its effect was independent of the number of species in the community. Our study showed that species richness and functional diversity are relevant attributes of forests influencing the spatial pattern of plant communities, and consequently forest functioning. © 2019 Nordic Society Oik

We studied the relationship between temperature and the coexistence of great tit Parus major and blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus, breeding in 75 study plots across Europe and North Africa. We expected an advance in laying date and a reduction in clutch size during warmer springs as a general response to climate warming and a delay in laying date and a reduction in clutch size during warmer winters due to density-dependent effects. As expected, as spring temperature increases laying date advances and as winter temperature increases clutch size is reduced in both species. Density of great tit affected the relationship between winter temperature and laying date in great and blue tit. Specifically, as density of great tit increased and temperature in winter increased both species started to reproduce later. Density of blue tit affected the relationship between spring temperature and blue and great tit laying date. Thus, both species start to reproduce earlier with increasing spring temperature as density of blue tit increases, which was not an expected outcome, since we expected that increasing spring temperature should advance laying date, while increasing density should delay it cancelling each other out. Climate warming and its interaction with density affects clutch size of great tits but not of blue tits. As predicted, great tit clutch size is reduced more with density of blue tits as temperature in winter increases. The relationship between spring temperature and density on clutch size of great tits depends on whether the increase is in density of great tit or blue tit. Therefore, an increase in temperature negatively affected the coexistence of blue and great tits differently in both species. Thus, blue tit clutch size was unaffected by the interaction effect of density with temperature, while great tit clutch size was affected in multiple ways by these interactions terms.

Forest plantations with different trees and purposes were traditionally developed with seminal seedlings. Actually, the most important planted tree species can be propagated by vegetative methods, so clonal silviculture has high possibilities to grow. Salicaceae plantations are established by cuttings of genetically improved trees. This determines that poplars and willows are produced under clonal silviculture systems. Furthermore, at the region of Paraná River Delta, stands are monoclonal and Populus deltoides ‘Australiano 129/60’ is the most widespread clone. These forest systems are unstable and there is a productive risk associated to emergence of pests, diseases and extreme climatic conditions. Thus, monoclonal silviculture model has some ecological and productive disadvantages. Reducing genetic diversity could threat the aims of the forest plantations and it is important to consider aspects related to biodiversity when plantations are planned. Clone combination in the same stand can be useful to increase genetic diversity, because tree species are highly diverse at both inter and intraspecific level. Mixed clonal plantations can favor to decrease the impact of productive activities on the environment, spatially distribute soil nutrient demand, increase genetic diversity and enhance stand yields.The aim of this review is to analyze previous experiences in clonal silviculture and plantation in mixed stands as a framework to propose silvicultural alternatives for Salicaceae production in Paraná River Delta, Argentina., Las plantaciones forestales han sido tradicionalmente desarrolladas a partir de material de propagación de origen seminal. Sin embargo, las principales especies plantadas en el mundo se pueden propagar vegetativamente, por lo que las posibilidades para el desarrollo de la silvicultura clonal son crecientes. El cultivo de Salicáceas se realiza con estacas o guías, por lo que las plantaciones son 100% producidas bajo un esquema de silvicultura clonal. Además, en el Delta del Río Paraná los rodales se instalan como bloques monoclonales y el clon Populus deltoides ‘Australiano 129/60’ es el más difundido, definiendo una matriz productiva con una estrecha diversidad genética. Esto determina que el sistema sea menos estable y trae aparejado un riesgo productivo ante la aparición de condiciones de estrés biótico o abiótico. En consecuencia, el modelo de silvicultura monoclonal presenta algunas desventajas no solo desde el punto de vista ecológico, sino también productivo. A partir de la posibilidad que brindan las especies forestales, que presentan una gran variabilidad tanto intra como interespecífica, es posible pensar en combinación de clones para aumentar la diversidad genética de las plantaciones. Las plantaciones clonales mixtas pueden favorecer a la disminución de los impactos de las actividades productivas en el ambiente, distribuir espacialmente la demanda de nutrientes del suelo, aumentar la diversidad genética y mejorar los índices de rendimiento del rodal. El objetivo de esta revisión es analizar los antecedentes de silvicultura clonal y plantaciones mixtas como base para la propuesta de alternativas silviculturales para las Salicáceas del Delta del Paraná.

Aim of study: to analyse the effect of stocking density on common carp larvae production. Since stocking density is one of the most important variables in recirculating aquaculture system, it is fundamental to understand its implication on fish larval development. Area of study: BrazilMaterial and methods: In an initial trial over a 30-day period, 18,000 Cyprinus carpio larvae were subjected to eight different stocking densities (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 larvae/L). In a second trial over a 15-day period, the larvae subjected to the 40 larvae/L treatment were selected according to size and 360 of them were subjected to restocking processes at a density of 5 larvae/L, in order to evaluate possible compensatory growth, while those subjected to the 5 larvae/L treatment were likewise selected according to size and were distributed at the same stocking density (5 larvae/L), to be the control treatment during the restocking process.Main results: The larvae kept at the density of 5 larvae/L showed better growth and development. Increased heterogeneity of the concomitant batch was observed with higher stocking density. Restocking at low density (5 larvae/L), for larvae that had previously been kept at high density (40 larvae/L), caused partial compensatory growth, with an increase in the specific growth rate. Increasing the density caused increased productivity up to the density level of 25 larvae/L, but from then on there was no significant difference (p > 0.05).Research highlights: Carp larvae reared at high densities need to be restocked during rearing in order to avoid the “shooting” problem.

Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. Aim of study: to analyse the effect of stocking density on common carp larvae production. Since stocking density is one of the most important variables in recirculating aquaculture system, it is fundamental to understand its implication on fish larval development. Area of study: BrazilMaterial and methods: In an initial trial over a 30-day period, 18,000 Cyprinus carpio larvae were subjected to eight different stocking densities (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 larvae/L). In a second trial over a 15-day period, the larvae subjected to the 40 larvae/L treatment were selected according to size and 360 of them were subjected to restocking processes at a density of 5 larvae/L, in order to evaluate possible compensatory growth, while those subjected to the 5 larvae/L treatment were likewise selected according to size and were distributed at the same stocking density (5 larvae/L), to be the control treatment during the restocking process.Main results: The larvae kept at the density of 5 larvae/L showed better growth and development. Increased heterogeneity of the concomitant batch was observed with higher stocking density. Restocking at low density (5 larvae/L), for larvae that had previously been kept at high density (40 larvae/L), caused partial compensatory growth, with an increase in the specific growth rate. Increasing the density caused increased productivity up to the density level of 25 larvae/L, but from then on there was no significant difference (p > 0.05).Research highlights: Carp larvae reared at high densities need to be restocked during rearing in order to avoid the “shooting” problem.

The functioning of plant communities is strongly influenced by the number of species in the community and their spatial arrangement. This is because plants interact with their nearest neighbors and this interaction is expected to be stronger when the interacting individuals are ecologically similar in terms of resource use. Recent evidence shows that species richness alters the balance of intra- versus interspecific competition, but the effect of species richness, and phylogenetic and functional diversity on the spatial pattern of the plant communities remain less studied. Even far, how forest stand structure derived from past management practices can influence the relationship between species richness and spatial pattern is still unknown. Here, we evaluate the spatial distribution of woody individuals (DBH >7.5 cm) in 209 forest stands (i.e. plots) with an increasing level of species richness (from 1 up to 10 species) in six forest types along a latitudinal gradient in Europe. We used completely mapped plots to investigate the spatial pattern in each forest stand with point pattern techniques. We fitted linear models to analyze the effect of species richness (positively correlated with phylogenetic diversity) and functional diversity on tree spatial arrangements. We also controled this relationship by forest type and stand structure as a proxy of the management legacy. Our results showed a generalized positive effect of species richness and functional diversity on the degree of spatial clustering of trees, and on the spatial independence of tree sizes regardless of the forest type. Moreover, current tree spatial arrangements were still conditioned by its history of management; however its effect was independent of the number of species in the community. Our study showed that species richness and functional diversity are relevant attributes of forests influencing the spatial pattern of plant communities, and consequently forest functioning. © 2019 Nordic Society Oik

Forest plantations with different trees and purposes were traditionally developed with seminal seedlings. Actually, the most important planted tree species can be propagated by vegetative methods, so clonal silviculture has high possibilities to grow. Salicaceae plantations are established by cuttings of genetically improved trees. This determines that poplars and willows are produced under clonal silviculture systems. Furthermore, at the region of Paraná River Delta, stands are monoclonal and Populus deltoides ‘Australiano 129/60’ is the most widespread clone. These forest systems are unstable and there is a productive risk associated to emergence of pests, diseases and extreme climatic conditions. Thus, monoclonal silviculture model has some ecological and productive disadvantages. Reducing genetic diversity could threat the aims of the forest plantations and it is important to consider aspects related to biodiversity when plantations are planned. Clone combination in the same stand can be useful to increase genetic diversity, because tree species are highly diverse at both inter and intraspecific level. Mixed clonal plantations can favor to decrease the impact of productive activities on the environment, spatially distribute soil nutrient demand, increase genetic diversity and enhance stand yields.The aim of this review is to analyze previous experiences in clonal silviculture and plantation in mixed stands as a framework to propose silvicultural alternatives for Salicaceae production in Paraná River Delta, Argentina., Las plantaciones forestales han sido tradicionalmente desarrolladas a partir de material de propagación de origen seminal. Sin embargo, las principales especies plantadas en el mundo se pueden propagar vegetativamente, por lo que las posibilidades para el desarrollo de la silvicultura clonal son crecientes. El cultivo de Salicáceas se realiza con estacas o guías, por lo que las plantaciones son 100% producidas bajo un esquema de silvicultura clonal. Además, en el Delta del Río Paraná los rodales se instalan como bloques monoclonales y el clon Populus deltoides ‘Australiano 129/60’ es el más difundido, definiendo una matriz productiva con una estrecha diversidad genética. Esto determina que el sistema sea menos estable y trae aparejado un riesgo productivo ante la aparición de condiciones de estrés biótico o abiótico. En consecuencia, el modelo de silvicultura monoclonal presenta algunas desventajas no solo desde el punto de vista ecológico, sino también productivo. A partir de la posibilidad que brindan las especies forestales, que presentan una gran variabilidad tanto intra como interespecífica, es posible pensar en combinación de clones para aumentar la diversidad genética de las plantaciones. Las plantaciones clonales mixtas pueden favorecer a la disminución de los impactos de las actividades productivas en el ambiente, distribuir espacialmente la demanda de nutrientes del suelo, aumentar la diversidad genética y mejorar los índices de rendimiento del rodal. El objetivo de esta revisión es analizar los antecedentes de silvicultura clonal y plantaciones mixtas como base para la propuesta de alternativas silviculturales para las Salicáceas del Delta del Paraná.

Pollination is thought to be under positive density‐dependence, destabilising plant coexistence by conferring fitness disadvantages to rare species. Such disadvantage is exacerbated by interspecific competition but can be mitigated by facilitation and intraspecific competition. However, pollinator scarcity should enhance intraspecific plant competition and impose disadvantage on common over rare species (negative density‐dependence, NDD). We assessed pollination proxies (visitation rate, pollen receipt, pollen tubes) in a generalised plant community and related them to conspecific and heterospecific density, expecting NDD and interspecific facilitation due to the natural pollinator scarcity. Contrary to usual expectations, all proxies indicated strong intraspecific competition for common plants. Moreover interspecific facilitation prevailed and was stronger for rare than for common plants. Both NDD and interspecific facilitation were modulated by specialisation, floral display and pollinator group. The combination of intraspecific competition and interspecific facilitation fosters plant coexistence, suggesting that pollination can be a niche axis maintaining plant diversity.

Plant traits—the morphological, anatomical, physiological, biochemical and phenological characteristics of plants—determine how plants respond to environmental factors, affect other trophic levels, and influence ecosystem properties and their benefits and detriments to people. Plant trait data thus represent the basis for a vast area of research spanning from evolutionary biology, community and functional ecology, to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem and landscape management, restoration, biogeography and earth system modelling. Since its foundation in 2007, the TRY database of plant traits has grown continuously. It now provides unprecedented data coverage under an open access data policy and is the main plant trait database used by the research community worldwide. Increasingly, the TRY database also supports new frontiers of trait-based plant research, including the identification of data gaps and the subsequent mobilization or measurement of new data. To support this development, in this article we evaluate the extent of the trait data compiled in TRY and analyse emerging patterns of data coverage and representativeness. Best species coverage is achieved for categorical traits—almost complete coverage for ‘plant growth form’. However, most traits relevant for ecology and vegetation modelling are characterized by continuous intraspecific variation and trait–environmental relationships. These traits have to be measured on individual plants in their respective environment. Despite unprecedented data coverage, we observe a humbling lack of completeness and representativeness of these continuous traits in many aspects. We, therefore, conclude that reducing data gaps and biases in the TRY database remains a key challenge and requires a coordinated approach to data mobilization and trait measurements. A shift in the relative arrival of offspring, for example a shift in hatching time, can affect competition at the intraspecific level through size-mediated priority effects, where the larger individuals gain more resources. These priority effects are likely to be affected by climate warming and the rate of intraspecific predation, that is cannibalism. In a laboratory experiment, we examined size-mediated priority effects in larvae of the univoltine damselfly, Lestes sponsa, at two different temperatures (21 and 23 degrees C). We created three size groups of larvae by manipulating hatching time: early hatched with a large size (extra-advanced), intermediate hatched with an intermediate size (advanced) and late hatched with a small size (non-advanced). Thereafter, we reared the larvae from these groups in non-mixed and mixed groups of 12 larvae. We found strong priority and temperature effects. First, extra-advanced larvae most often had higher survival, growth and development rates than non-advanced larvae in mixed groups, compared to groups that consisted of only extra-advanced larvae. Second, temperature increased growth and development rates and cannibalism. However, the strength of priority effects did not differ between the two experimental temperatures, because there was no statistical interaction between temperature and treatments. That is, the mixed and non-mixed groups of non-advanced, advanced and extra-advanced larvae showed the same relative change in life-history traits across the two temperatures. Non-advanced and advanced larvae had similar or higher growth rate and mass in mixed groups compared to non-mixed groups, suggesting that predation from advanced larvae in the mixed group released resources for the non-advanced and advanced larvae that survived despite cannibalism risk. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde die Rolle von Trematoden auf das Freßverhalten ihrer Wirte auf zwei trophischen Ebenen untersucht. Vier verschiedene Süßwasserschnecken-Trematoden-Systeme wurden verwendet, um zu testen, ob ein allgemeines Muster für die Auswirkung von Infektionen auf die Grazingaktivität von Schnecken auf das Periphyton nachgewiesen werden kann. Die Grazingraten auf Periphyton bei infizierten Schnecken entweder höher, niedriger oder ähnlich denen derjenigen von nicht infizierten Artgenossen. Augenparasiten können die Leistungsfähigkeit ihres Wirtes beeinträchtigen, was die Auswirkungen auf das Erkennen von Beutetieren, Raubtieren und Artgenossen hat. This study evaluated the role of trematodes on their host’s feeding behaviour at two trophic levels. Four different freshwater snail–trematode systems were used to test whether a general pattern can be detected for the impact of infections on snail periphyton grazing activity. Mass-specific periphyton grazing rates of infected snails were higher, lower, or similar to rates of non-infected conspecifics. The variation across systems may result from differences on how the parasites use the resources of the snail and thus affect its energy budget. Eye parasites can impair their host’s sensory performance with important consequences for the detection of prey, predators and conspecifics. European perch experimentally infected with Tylodelphys clavata were used to evaluate their feeding behaviour under competition with non-infected conspecifics, for two different prey species (Asellus aquaticus and Daphnia magna). The distance at which infected fish attacked both prey species was significantly shorter in comparison to non-infected conspecifics. Additionally, infected fish had more unsuccessful attacks and there was a general tendency that non-infected fish consumed more of the available prey. To evaluate whether fish alter their prey preference as a compensatory mechanism, perch from Lake Müggelsee were sampled and their diet was evaluated using both stomach content and stable isotope analyses. Both methods indicated that with increasing infection intensity fish had a more selective diet, while less intensively infected fish appeared to be generalist feeders. The results from this study confirm that trematodes can play a relevant role within food webs by altering their hosts’ feeding behaviour. Furthermore, in this way trematodes can affect the interaction strengths of their hosts with other species at various trophic levels.

Intraguild interactions play a prominent role in sarcosaprophagous communities, so intraspecific and interspecific competition phenomena between fly larvae take place. Synthesiomyia nudiseta is a species that has recently been recorded on human corpses in Europe, and it has been cited in forensic cases in Spain and Italy. The mature larvae are known to be facultative predators on necrophagous fly larvae, but their role as predators is unknown. The aim of this paper is to investigate the predatory behavior of S. nudiseta on the most abundant blowfly larvae in sarcosaprophagous communities in southwestern Europe (i.e., Chrysomya albiceps, Lucilia sericata, and Calliphora vicina). Intraspecific and interspecific competition experiments were carried out to study the effect of this species in the necrophagous diptera community. First-instar larvae were placed in plastic cups with the same amount of pig liver (15 g) at different densities (50, 100, 150, and 300 individuals/cup). Mortality in blowflies increased when S. nudiseta larvae were present: up to 98.40% in Ch. albiceps, 89.60% in L. sericata, and 84.93% in C. vicina. Pre-imaginal developmental time and adult wing size were analyzed and compared under each of the intraspecific and interspecific conditions; both variables were affected by competition in all cases. The implications of the presence of S. nudiseta for sarcosaprophagous community dynamics and its effect on the estimation of postmortem interval (PMI) are discussed.

[Abstract] Aim: Major efforts have been devoted to understanding the geographic pattern of sexual size dimorphism (SSD). Rensch's rule posits that SSD increases with body size in male-biased SSD species and decreases with body size in female-biased SSD species. This pattern, and its inverse, have been mainly explored at the interspecific level, whereas research at the intraspecific level has been largely neglected. Here, we test whether the allometric pattern of SSD in an urodele amphibian conforms to Rensch's rule and evaluate the relative role of four potential mechanisms: sexual selection, fecundity selection, density-dependent resource availability and differential plasticity. Location: Iberian Peninsula. Taxon: Lissotriton boscai (Amphibia: Caudata: Salamandridae). Methods: We used original (field-based) and published data on body size, courtship behaviour and fecundity parameters and a suite of climatic, ecological and genetic (mitochondrial and nuclear markers) predictors to assess these hypotheses. Results: The results showed that SSD increased with increasing female mean body size, supporting the inverse Rensch's rule pattern. Primary productivity-related variables and female density were among the most relevant ecological predictors of SSD after accounting for genetic structure and capture date. Main conclusions: This study reveals that the interplay between the density-dependent resource availability hypothesis and the differential plasticity hypothesis explains the inverse Rensch's rule. We discuss how combining biogeographical and experimental approaches can provide alternative interpretations to the classical sexual and fecundity selection hypotheses on the interpopulation variation in SSD.

European perch experimentally infected with Tylodelphys clavata were used to evaluate their feeding behaviour under competition with non-infected conspecifics, for two different prey species (Asellus aquaticus and Daphnia magna). The distance at which infected fish attacked both prey species was significantly shorter in comparison to non-infected conspecifics. Additionally, infected fish had more unsuccessful attacks and there was a general tendency that non-infected fish consumed more of the available prey. To evaluate whether fish alter their prey preference as a compensatory mechanism, perch from Lake Müggelsee were sampled and their diet was evaluated using both stomach content and stable isotope analyses. Both methods indicated that with increasing infection intensity fish had a more selective diet, while less intensively infected fish appeared to be generalist feeders. The results from this study confirm that trematodes can play a relevant role within food webs by altering their hosts’ feeding behaviour. Furthermore, in this way trematodes can affect the interaction strengths of their hosts with other species at various trophic levels.

[Aim]: Major efforts have been devoted to understanding the geographic pattern of sexual size dimorphism (SSD). Rensch's rule posits that SSD increases with body size in male-biased SSD species and decreases with body size in female-biased SSD species. This pattern, and its inverse, have been mainly explored at the interspecific level, whereas research at the intraspecific level has been largely neglected. Here, we test whether the allometric pattern of SSD in an urodele amphibian conforms to Rensch's rule and evaluate the relative role of four potential mechanisms: sexual selection, fecundity selection, density-dependent resource availability and differential plasticity., [Location]: Iberian Peninsula., [Taxon]: Lissotriton boscai (Amphibia: Caudata: Salamandridae)., [Methods]: We used original (field-based) and published data on body size, courtship behaviour and fecundity parameters and a suite of climatic, ecological and genetic (mitochondrial and nuclear markers) predictors to assess these hypotheses., [Results]: The results showed that SSD increased with increasing female mean body size, supporting the inverse Rensch's rule pattern. Primary productivity-related variables and female density were among the most relevant ecological predictors of SSD after accounting for genetic structure and capture date., [Main conclusions]: This study reveals that the interplay between the density-dependent resource availability hypothesis and the differential plasticity hypothesis explains the inverse Rensch's rule. We discuss how combining biogeographical and experimental approaches can provide alternative interpretations to the classical sexual and fecundity selection hypotheses on the interpopulation variation in SSD.

Coexistence between great tits Parus major and blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus, but also other hole-nesting taxa, constitutes a classic example of species co-occurrence resulting in potential interference and exploitation competition for food and for breeding and roosting sites. However, the spatial and temporal variations in coexistence and its consequences for competition remain poorly understood. We used an extensive database on reproduction in nest boxes by great and blue tits based on 87 study plots across Europe and Northern Africa during 1957-2012 for a total of 19,075 great tit and 16,729 blue tit clutches to assess correlative evidence for a relationship between laying date and clutch size, respectively, and density consistent with effects of intraspecific and interspecific competition. In an initial set of analyses, we statistically controlled for a suite of site-specific variables. We found evidence for an effect of intraspecific competition on blue tit laying date (later laying at higher density) and clutch size (smaller clutch size at higher density), but no evidence of significant effects of intraspecific competition in great tits, nor effects of interspecific competition for either species. To further control for site-specific variation caused by a range of potentially confounding variables, we compared means and variances in laying date and clutch size of great and blue tits among three categories of difference in density between the two species. We exploited the fact that means and variances are generally positively correlated. If interspecific competition occurs, we predicted a reduction in mean and an increase in variance in clutch size in great tit and blue tit when density of heterospecifics is higher than the density of conspecifics, and for intraspecific competition, this reduction would occur when density of conspecifics is higher than the density of heterospecifics.
