Die Arbeit widmet sich der Rolle charismatischer Bewegungen innerhalb der katholischen Kirche, insbesondere durch das Beispiel der Loretto Gemeinschaft in Österreich. Es werden die Dynamik und die Auswirkungen des „Vintage-Katholizismus“ (Anne Koch) auf die traditionellen Strukturen der katholischen Kirche analysiert. Die Kernthemen der Arbeit umfassen die Theologie der Loretto-Gemeinschaft, ihre spirituelle Praxis und ihre Einflüsse auf die katholische Theologie, wie Jüngerschaft, Ekklesiologie und Eschatologie. Die Arbeit stellt fest, dass evangelikale Katholik:innen eine erneuernde Kraft innerhalb der Kirche darstellen können, aber auch Spannungen und Kritik, insbesondere von akademischer Seite, hervorrufen. Trotz einiger Kritik, speziell über die Loretto-Gemeinschaft, und den Herausforderungen die evangelikal katholischen Gruppen mit sich bringen, ist ein konstruktiver Dialog zwischen charismatischen Gruppen und der institutionellen Kirche möglich und beide Seiten können von einem Miteinander profitieren. Der Text schließt mit einem Plädoyer für einen spirituellen Sýnodos, in dem gegenseitiger Respekt und gemeinsames Lernen im Vordergrund stehen., This work explores the role of charismatic movements within the catholic church, particularly through the example of the Loretto community in Austria. It analyzes the dynamics and impacts of "vintage catholicism" (Anne Koch) on the traditional structures of the catholic church. The core themes of the study include the theology of the Loretto community, its spiritual practices, and its influences on catholic theology, such as discipleship, ecclesiology, and eschatology. The study finds that evangelical catholics can represent a renewing force within the church but also provoke tensions and criticism, especially from academic circles. Despite some criticism, particularly regarding the Loretto community, and the challenges posed by evangelical catholic groups, a constructive dialogue between charismatic groups and the institutional church is possible, and both sides can benefit from mutual engagement. This research explores how an emulative and practice-based approach can develop a closer understanding of the mysticism of Teresa of Avila. Drawing upon her mystical practice of recogimiento and the inherent visuality of her texts, this thesis seeks to map the psychological form and function of her soul and its relationship with language, word, and image. To do it so presents an innovative methodology for reading her texts which asks: what new vision of Teresa’s mysticism can be developed by approaching her texts in an emulative parallel to the way in which she approached the Divine through Scripture? Drawing upon the centrality of imitatio and meditative visualisation within Teresa’s practice of recogimiento, this parallel emulation focuses upon her textual imagery as an interface for “entering-into” and exploring the mystical topography of her soul and is performed through my artistic practice. This practice weaves together feminist philosophy, visual culture, religion, language, and psychoanalysis into an interdisciplinary lens through which to approach Teresa’s texts through drawing, performance, dialogue, painting, and sculpture. This novel “practice-to-practice” approach draws together key aspects of Teresa’s practice and the creative and interdisciplinary perspectives of my practice to navigate the mystical landscape that lies beyond the threshold of her texts. From this embodied position the thesis traces the function of language within her mysticism – both for Teresa the writer, and Teresa the reader -, and looks to map the functional structure of her soul through notions of word, image, and vision. The resulting map reveals a pattern of word and image that characterises both her practice of recogimiento and the nature of the soul itself. The Norwegian matriarch, Kari E. Børresen, died in April 2016, after a fine academic career as one of the outstanding feminist theologians of her generation. This article seeks to portray her by lifting up one of the key issues of her research within gender studies: the imago Dei and the various ways this was understood in Christian antiquity and the Middle Ages. Christian churches have played crucial but diverse roles in public debates over homosexuality in Africa. In contrast to the vocal and explicit homophobia witnessed in many Pentecostal-Charismatic Churches (PCCs), homosexuality has until recently been an overwhelmingly silenced issue in the Acholi region of Northern Uganda, and an almost complete non-issue in the local Catholic Church. This article suggests that while this silence in part relates to the temporal proximity of the Northern Ugandan war, the absence of LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) activism in the region, and the hesitance of mainline churches to talk about sex, it is also embedded in what are considered to be customary Acholi understandings of sexuality. Offering an analysis of Acholi Catholic teaching on peace and the family, the article suggests that Catholicism has entrenched heteronormative patriarchy in Acholi society. However, as illustrated by the unpopularity of church weddings, the norms that govern sexuality are negotiated in the dynamic space between religion and what are contemporarily understood as ‘modern’ and ‘customary’ Acholi moral sensibilities. The article emphasizes the need for scholarship on religion and homosexuality to extend beyond PCCs and capital cities, and beyond the most explicit forms of public homophobia in Africa. more...

The paper identifies consistent interpretations of the phenomenon of faith, based on learning of the most influential paradigms in modern Catholic theology. It is indicated in particular that Catholic theology of the 19th-early 21st centuries developed a metaphysical concept of faith as acceptance of dogmatic theology theses by mind. All scientific and philosophical rationality has then reduced to judicious metaphysics, whereas the possibility of intuitive or personalistic interpretations of faith was denied. Since the mid-20th century those metaphysical provisions on rationality and faith have been existentially interpreted, which was particularly brilliantly done by Pope John Paul Pavel II in the encyclopedia 'Fidesetrati'.Pope John Paul Pavel II held to a pre-modern concept of faith but introduced existential motives to his concept for the sake of a new proof of metaphysical concepts of faith, rationality and a path to know God. At the same time, Pope tended to pass on to a new paradigm, a pre-postmetaphysic and postmodern dialogical concept of faith, which was however completely shaped in creativity of another Catholic theologian - H.U. von Balthasar and within transcendental Thomism of K. Sixteenth-century Spanish thought is constitutive of an established, though insufficiently studied, tradition of European political theorizing. As against the politics of Machiavellism, the Spanish tradition argued in favor of an ethical perspective on statecraft. As an introduction to the subject, this article addresses key concepts set forth by the Dominican theologian-jurist Francisco de Vitoria regarding the natural foundations and teleology of the state and its coercive power. Terms such as “natural law”, “dominium”, and “perfect community” describe the Thomistic basis of his political philosophy and illustrate the moral significance and legitimate basis of political society in early modern Spanish politico-theological thought. more...

This question has been of considerable embarrassment to Catholic theology over recent decades. It is true that the heritage of past centuries was not easy to handle. For many years, classical apologetics put miracles into a role they could not fill – that of a peremptory argument in favor of faith. Russian émigré theologian Vladimir Lossky's (1903-1958) claims in his classic study of 1944, The Mystical Theology of Eastern Church, that the emphasis on the experience of spiritual separation from God in Western mystical theology ultimately goes back to how Latin churches began to add the word filioque (and-of-the-Son) to the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed in the sixth century. In his explanation Lossky discusses the theology of the Greek fathers suggesting that the idea of the Spirit’s generation from both the Father and the Son both builds upon and generates philosophical ideas that conflict with the possibility of receiving personal experiential knowledge of God. To exemplify such ideas and their negative influence Lossky points especially to neo-Platonism and the Western mystical theology of dark nights. Simultaneously he makes positive mention, for example, of the Orthodox theologies, of St Symeon the New Theologian (949-1022) and St Maximus Confessor (580-662). The problem with Lossky’s claims and suggestions is that he never substantiates them by actually comparing relevant sources with each other. As a consequence many refuse even to consider his claims, leaving the question of what distinguishes Western theologies of the dark night from Eastern Orthodox theology untouched. This study discusses the Spanish Carmelite St John of the Cross’ (1542-1591) theology of dark nights of the soul from the point of view of Lossky’s claims. It conducts a substantial comparison of St John’s theology with the theology of St Symeon the New Theologian. In addition, it also compares select aspects of his theology with aspects of Vladimir Lossky’s and St Maximus Confessor’s theologies and the thought of the neo-Platonist philosopher Plotinus (204-270). Estas líneas pretenden responder a la cuestión de si, efectivamente, reconoció la Iglesia española romanovisigoda la existencia del Sacramento de la Penitencia y cómo concebía su naturaleza y sus principales propiedades. Dos caminos se ofrecen para abordar estas dos cuestiones. El primero y más sencillo es consultar el mismo uso gramatical, examinando si se da a la penitencia el nombre de sacramento en el sentido riguroso de la palabra. El otro camino consiste en una reflexión ponderada sobre la realidad penitencial, tal como la presentan los primeros monumentos literarios de la Iglesia española. Se acaba concluyendo que la Iglesia española conoció y puso en práctica el sacramento de la Penitencia, que para la Iglesia romanovisigoda fue, desde el principio, una señal exterior, esto es, un complejo de actos externos, esenciales a todo juicio, y manifestación al mismo tiempo de otros actos interiores, así como un signo sagrado al considerarse de la competencia de la Iglesia y se ordenada a la remisión de los pecados. more...

Estas páginas tienen la intención de proponer lo que parece esencial y en lo que todo teólogo ha de convenir sobre el conocimiento y el método teológicos. Son ideas conocidas, pero que tal vez no estén de más que sean recordadas; su influencia puede ser grande a la hora de precisar ulteriormente de lo que es la ciencia teológica. En esta línea, se abordará, en primer lugar, la línea fundamental de la teología católica; en segundo lugar, la teología en su acepción más amplia; en tercer lugar, la naturaleza misma del conocimiento teológico; y, en último lugar, unas líneas conclusivas acerca de cómo la noción esencial que ha presidido la elaboración de este artículo, y de las aclaraciones que dan a esta noción los principios de metodología expuestos, se deduce la descripción del método de la teología. more...

A anteriores publicaciones acerca de dos votos inéditos tridentinos, pertenecientes a la controversia de los seis artículos sobre el proceso justificativo, sigue en el presente trabajo la edición de un tercero que forma parte del mismo debate. Estos tres votos son, juntamente con el del conventual Antonio de Pinerolo y el del jesuita Alfonso de Salmerón, los únicos originales que hasta ahora se conocen de la mencionada disputa, en la que tomaron parte treinta y cuatro teólogos menos del clero secular y regular. En esta línea, se expresan algunas palabras sobre la personalidad del Maestro Francisco Visdomini Ferrariense, así como sobre su actividad tridentina en la primera época del Concilio a la que pertenece el escrito que el Códice 614 de la Universidad Gregoriana de Roma atribuye la paternidad en cuanto a la transcripción de las tres piezas conciliares mencionadas. more...

Se examinan los defectos mostrados en los artículos editados por Don Jaime Viñas Planas bajo el título “El arbitraje internacional en los escolásticos españoles”, con especial mención a las figuras de Suárez y Molina. Así, el autor realiza un repaso por el Derecho Internacional en Suárez y, sucesivamente, en Molina, para concluir lo siguiente: primero, que Molina exige para la justicia de la guerra causas justas y graves; segundo, que Molina defiende explícitamente la obligación del arbitraje en varias circunstancias, e implícitamente defiende lo mismo en todos los caos en que haya duda por alguna de las partes, si la guerra es ofensiva, porque establece que semejantes conflictos se han de arreglar pacíficamente; y tercero, que la guerra justa por ambas partes, fuera del caso de ignorancia invencible, es una monstruosidad. more...
