SDSS J1430+2303 has been argued to possess a supermassive black hole binary which is predicted to merge within a few months or three years from January 2022. We conducted follow-up optical spectroscopic observations of SDSS J1430+2303 with KOOLS-IFU on Seimei Telescope in May, June, and July 2022, and April 2023. The observed spectrum around $\mathrm{H}\mathrm{\alpha}$ shows a central broad component $\sim 10^3\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$ blueshifted from the narrow H$\mathrm{\alpha}$ line as well as the broader double-peaked component with a separation of $\sim\pm 5\times10^3\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$, similar to the spectrum reported in January 2022. We investigate the variability of the complex broad $\mathrm{H}\mathrm{\alpha}$ emission line relative to the continuum over the observation period. The continuum-normalized relative flux of the central broad component shows the increasing trend from May to July 2022 which is interpreted to be caused by the decrease of the continuum as also supported by damping of the X-ray, UV, and optical light curves observed for the same period. From July 2022 to April 2023, however, the central broad component decreased significantly. For the relative flux of the broader double-peaked component, on the other hand, no significant change appears at any epoch. These results suggest that the complicated broad line profile of SDSS J1430+2303 is generated from at least two distinct regions. We performed an experimental verification of a coronagraph. As a result, we confirmed that, at the focal region where the planetary point spread function exists, the coronagraph system mitigates the raw contrast of a star-planet system by at least $1\times10^{-5}$ even for the 1-$\lambda/D$ star-planet separation. In addition, the verified coronagraph keeps the shapes of the off-axis point spread functions when the setup has the source angular separation of 1$\lambda/D$. The low-order wavefront error and the non-zero extinction ratio of the linear polarizer may affect the currently confirmed contrast. The sharpness of the off-axis point spread function generated by the sub-$\lambda/D$ separated sources is promising for the fiber-based observation of exoplanets. The coupling efficiency with a single mode fiber exceeds 50% when the angular separation is greater than 3--4$\times 10^{-1}\lambda/D$. For sub-$\lambda/D$ separated sources, the peak positions (obtained with Gaussian fitting) of the output point spread functions are different from the angular positions of sources; the peak position moved from about $0.8\lambda/D$ to $1.0\lambda/D$ as the angular separation of the light source varies from $0.1\lambda/D$ to $1.0\lambda/D$. The off-axis throughput including the fiber-coupling efficiency (with respect to no focal plane mask) is about 40% for 1-$\lambda/D$ separated sources and 10% for 0.5-$\lambda/D$ separated ones (excluding the factor of the ratio of pupil aperture width and Lyot stop width), where we assumed a linear-polarized-light injection. We report the detection of an ionized gas outflow from an $X$-ray active galactic nucleus (AGN) hosted in a massive quiescent galaxy in a protocluster at $z=3.09$ (J221737.29+001823.4). It is a type-2 QSO with broad ($W_{80}>1000$ km s$^{-1}$) and strong ($\log (L_{\rm [OIII]}$ / erg s$^{-1})\approx43.4$) [O {\footnotesize III}]$\lambda\lambda$4959,5007 emission lines detected by slit spectroscopy in three-position angles using Multi-Object Infra-Red Camera and Spectrograph (MOIRCS) on the Subaru telescope and the Multi-Object Spectrometer For Infra-Red Exploration (MOSFIRE) on the Keck-I telescope. In the all slit directions, [O {\footnotesize III}] emission is extended to $\sim15$ physical kpc and indicates a powerful outflow spreading over the host galaxy. The inferred ionized gas mass outflow rate is $\rm 22\pm3~M_{\odot}~yr^{-1}$. Although it is a radio source, according to the line diagnostics using H$\beta$, [O {\footnotesize II}], and [O {\footnotesize III}], photoionization by the central QSO is likely the dominant ionization mechanism rather than shocks caused by radio jets. On the other hand, the spectral energy distribution of the host galaxy is well characterized as a quiescent galaxy that has shut down star formation by several hundred Myr ago. We use the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) project as a template to demonstrate how deep spectrophotometric surveys covering large cosmological volumes over extended fields (1– $15\, \rm{deg^2}$ ) with a mid-IR imaging spectrometer (17– $36\, \rm{\rm{\upmu m}}$ ) in conjunction with deep $70\, \rm{\rm{\upmu m}}$ photometry with a far-IR camera, at wavelengths which are not affected by dust extinction can answer the most crucial questions in current galaxy evolution studies. A SPICA-like mission will be able for the first time to provide an unobscured three-dimensional (3D, i.e. x, y, and redshift z) view of galaxy evolution back to an age of the universe of less than $\sim$ 2 Gyrs, in the mid-IR rest frame. This survey strategy will produce a full census of the Star Formation Rate (SFR) in the universe, using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) bands and fine-structure ionic lines, reaching the characteristic knee of the galaxy luminosity function, where the bulk of the population is distributed, at any redshift up to $z \sim 3.5$ . Deep follow-up pointed spectroscopic observations with grating spectrometers onboard the satellite, across the full IR spectral range (17– $210\, \rm{\rm{\upmu m}}$ ), would simultaneously measure Black Hole Accretion Rate (BHAR), from high-ionisation fine-structure lines, and SFR, from PAH and low- to mid-ionisation lines in thousands of galaxies from solar to low metallicities, down to the knee of their luminosity functions. The analysis of the resulting atlas of IR spectra will reveal the physical processes at play in evolving galaxies across cosmic time, especially its heavily dust-embedded phase during the activity peak at the cosmic noon ( $z \sim 1$ –3), through IR emission lines and features that are insensitive to the dust obscuration.

The morphological study is crucial to investigate the connections between active galactic nuclei (AGN) activities and the evolution of galaxies. Substantial studies have found that radiative-mode AGNs primarily reside in disk galaxies, questioning the merger-driven mechanism of AGN activities. In this study, through S{\'e}rsic profile fitting and non-parametric morphological parameter measurements, we investigated the morphology of host galaxies of 485 optical variability-selected low luminosity AGNs at $z\lesssim4.26$ in the COSMOS field. We analyzed high-resolution images of the Hubble Space Telescope to measure these morphological parameters. We only successfully measured the morphological parameters for 76 objects and most AGN hosts ($\sim70\%$) were visually compact point-like sources. We examined the obtained morphological information as a function of redshift and compared them with literature data. We found that these AGN host galaxies showed no clear morphological preference. However, the merger rate increased with the higher hosts' SFRs and AGN luminosity. Interestingly, we found ongoing star formation consistent with the typical star forming populations in both elliptical and spiral galaxies while these two types of galaxies were more symmetric than normal star forming galaxies. These results suggested that optical variability-selected AGNs have} higher probabilities to reside in elliptical galaxies than infrared-selected AGNs (IR-AGNs), whose host galaxies had a strong disk-dominance, and supported recent studies that the AGN feedback could enhance star forming activities in host galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We conducted a deep spectroscopic survey, named SSA22-HIT, in the SSA22 field with DEIMOS on the Keck telescope, designed to tomographically map of high-$z$ HI gas through analysis of Ly$\alpha$ absorption in background galaxies' spectra. In total, 203 galaxies were spectroscopically confirmed at $2.5 < z < 6$ in the $26 \times 15$ arcmin$^2$ area, of which 150 were newly determined in this study. Our redshift measurements were merged with previously confirmed redshifts available in the $34 \times 27$ arcmin$^2$ area of the SSA22 field. This compiled catalog containing $\sim 740$ galaxies of various types at $z > 2$ is useful for various applications, and it is made publicly available. Our SSA22-HIT survey has increased by approximately twice the number of spectroscopic redshifts of sources at $z > 3.2$ in the observed field. This greatly benefits the HI tomographic mapping of the proto-cluster region at $z = 3.1$, which we present in a parallel study. From a comparison with publicly available redshift catalogs, we show that our compiled redshift catalog in the SSA22 field is comparable to those among major extra-galactic survey fields in terms of a combination of wide area and high surface number density of objects at $z > 2$., Comment: Submitted to the Astronomical Journal, 26 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables

We searched for massive galaxy population in the known large-scale high-density structure of Lyman$~\alpha$ emitters (LAEs) at $z=2.39$ near the radio galaxy 53W002 by using $B,~V,~i^\prime,~J,~H,~{\rm{and}}~K_s$-bands imaging data taken with Suprime-Cam and MOIRCS on the Subaru telescope. We selected 62 protocluster member candidates by their $JHK_s$-band colors and Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting analysis ($JHK_s$-selected galaxies) in our survey field of $70.2~{\rm{arcmin}}^{2}$, and compared their physical properties estimated from the SED fitting with a comparison sample in the COSMOS field. We found significant number density excesses for the $JHK_s$-selected galaxies in the 53W002 field at $K_s<22.25,~J-K_s>2,~{\rm{or}}~V-K_s>4$. In particular the number density of the $JHK_s$-selected galaxies with $K_s<22.25~{\rm{and}}~J-K_s>2$ in the 53W002 field is nine times higher than the comparison sample. Most of those with $K_s<22.25~{\rm{and}}~J-K_s>2$ are massive galaxies with $M_s>10^{11}~M_\odot$, and their sSFRs of $10^{-11}$--$10^{-10}~\rm{yr^{-1}}$ suggest that the star formation has not yet stopped completely. We also found a density excess of quiescent galaxies with $M_s=5\times10^{10}$--$10^{11}~M_\odot~{\rm{and}}~{\rm{sSFR}}<10^{-11}~\rm{yr^{-1}}$ as well as that of low-mass galaxies with $M_s=10^{9.75}$--$10^{10}~M_\odot$ and various sSFRs. The massive galaxies with $M_s>10^{11}~M_\odot$ are not located at the density peaks of LAEs, but widely distributed along the similar direction with the structure of LAEs over $\sim15$--$20$ comoving Mpc. On the other hand, the quiescent galaxies with ${\rm{sSFR}}<10^{-11}~\rm{yr^{-1}}$ clearly avoid the structure of LAEs. Our results suggest that massive galaxies also exist in this protocluster discovered by the moderate overdensity of LAEs and their star formation activities depend on location in the protocluster., Comment: 33 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report a massive quiescent galaxy at $z_{\rm spec}=3.0922^{+0.008}_{-0.004}$ spectroscopically confirmed at a protocluster in the SSA22 field by detecting the Balmer and Ca {\footnotesize II} absorption features with multi-object spectrometer for infrared exploration (MOSFIRE) on the Keck I telescope. This is the most distant quiescent galaxy confirmed in a protocluster to date. We fit the optical to mid-infrared photometry and spectrum simultaneously with spectral energy distribution (SED) models of parametric and nonparametric star formation histories (SFH). Both models fit the observed SED well and confirm that this object is a massive quiescent galaxy with the stellar mass of $\log(\rm M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) = 11.26^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$ and $11.54^{+0.03}_{-0.00}$, and star formation rate of $\rm SFR/M_{\odot}~yr^{-1} <0.3$ and $=0.01^{+0.03}_{-0.01}$ for parametric and nonparametric models, respectively. The SFH from the former modeling is described as an instantaneous starburst while that of the latter modeling is longer-lived but both models agree with a sudden quenching of the star formation at $\sim0.6$ Gyr ago. This massive quiescent galaxy is confirmed in an extremely dense group of galaxies predicted as a progenitor of a brightest cluster galaxy formed via multiple mergers in cosmological numerical simulations. We newly find three plausible [O III]$\lambda$5007 emitters at $3.0791\leq z_{\rm spec}\leq3.0833$ happened to be detected around the target. Two of them just between the target and its nearest massive galaxy are possible evidence of their interactions. We conducted a deep spectroscopic survey, named SSA22-HIT, in the SSA22 field with the DEep Imaging MultiObject Spectrograph (DEIMOS) on the Keck telescope, designed to tomographically map high-z HI gas through analysis of Lya absorption in background galaxies' spectra. In total, 198 galaxies were spectroscopically confirmed at 2.5 < z < 6 with a few low-z exceptions in the 26 x 15 arcmin^2 area, of which 148 were newly determined in this study. Our redshift measurements were merged with previously confirmed redshifts available in the 34 x 27 arcmin^2 area of the SSA22 field. This compiled catalog containing 730 galaxies of various types at z > 2 is useful for various applications, and it is made publicly available. Our SSA22-HIT survey has increased by approximately twice the number of spectroscopic redshifts of sources at z > 3.2 in the observed field. From a comparison with publicly available redshift catalogs, we show that our compiled redshift catalog in the SSA22 field is comparable to those among major extragalactic survey fields in terms of a combination of wide area and high surface number density of objects at z > 2. About 40 % of the spectroscopically confirmed objects in SSA22-HIT show reasonable quality of spectra in the wavelengths shorter than Lya when a sufficient amount of smoothing is adopted. We selected 62 protocluster member candidates by their $JHK_s$-band colors and Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting analysis ($JHK_s$-selected galaxies) in our survey field of $70.2~{\rm{arcmin}}^{2}$, and compared their physical properties estimated from the SED fitting with a comparison sample in the COSMOS field. We found significant number density excesses for the $JHK_s$-selected galaxies in the 53W002 field at $K_s<22.25,~J-K_s>2,~{\rm{or}}~V-K_s>4$. In particular the number density of the $JHK_s$-selected galaxies with $K_s<22.25~{\rm{and}}~J-K_s>2$ in the 53W002 field is nine times higher than the comparison sample. Most of those with $K_s<22.25~{\rm{and}}~J-K_s>2$ are massive galaxies with $M_s>10^{11}~M_\odot$, and their sSFRs of $10^{-11}$--$10^{-10}~\rm{yr^{-1}}$ suggest that the star formation has not yet stopped completely. We also found a density excess of quiescent galaxies with $M_s=5\times10^{10}$--$10^{11}~M_\odot~{\rm{and}}~{\rm{sSFR}}<10^{-11}~\rm{yr^{-1}}$ as well as that of low-mass galaxies with $M_s=10^{9.75}$--$10^{10}~M_\odot$ and various sSFRs. The massive galaxies with $M_s>10^{11}~M_\odot$ are not located at the density peaks of LAEs, but widely distributed along the similar direction with the structure of LAEs over $\sim15$--$20$ comoving Mpc. On the other hand, the quiescent galaxies with ${\rm{sSFR}}<10^{-11}~\rm{yr^{-1}}$ clearly avoid the structure of LAEs. Our results suggest that massive galaxies also exist in this protocluster discovered by the moderate overdensity of LAEs and their star formation activities depend on location in the protocluster., Comment: 33 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report a massive quiescent galaxy at $z_{\rm spec}=3.0922^{+0.008}_{-0.004}$ spectroscopically confirmed at a protocluster in the SSA22 field by detecting the Balmer and Ca {\footnotesize II} absorption features with multi-object spectrometer for infrared exploration (MOSFIRE) on the Keck I telescope. This is the most distant quiescent galaxy confirmed in a protocluster to date. We fit the optical to mid-infrared photometry and spectrum simultaneously with spectral energy distribution (SED) models of parametric and nonparametric star formation histories (SFH). Both models fit the observed SED well and confirm that this object is a massive quiescent galaxy with the stellar mass of $\log(\rm M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) = 11.26^{+0.03}_{-0.04}$ and $11.54^{+0.03}_{-0.00}$, and star formation rate of $\rm SFR/M_{\odot}~yr^{-1} <0.3$ and $=0.01^{+0.03}_{-0.01}$ for parametric and nonparametric models, respectively. The SFH from the former modeling is described as an instantaneous starburst while that of the latter modeling is longer-lived but both models agree with a sudden quenching of the star formation at $\sim0.6$ Gyr ago. This massive quiescent galaxy is confirmed in an extremely dense group of galaxies predicted as a progenitor of a brightest cluster galaxy formed via multiple mergers in cosmological numerical simulations. We newly find three plausible [O III]$\lambda$5007 emitters at $3.0791\leq z_{\rm spec}\leq3.0833$ happened to be detected around the target. Two of them just between the target and its nearest massive galaxy are possible evidence of their interactions. Using a sample of galaxies at z approximate to 3 with detected Lyman Continuum (LyC) leakage in the SSA22 field, we attempt to verify a proposed indirect method for identifying cases with high LyC escape fraction f(esc) based on measurements of the H beta equivalent width (EW) and the beta slope of the UV continuum. To this end, we present Keck/MOSFIRE H beta emission line flux measurements of LyC galaxies (LCGs) at spectroscopic redshifts z(spec) similar to 3.3, Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at photometric redshifts z(phot) = 2.7-3.7, and Ly alpha emitters at z(phot) = 3.1. We also reconfirm the spectroscopic redshifts and measure the H beta emission-line fluxes from two LCGs and six LBGs. For the LCG in our sample with the most extreme f(esc), as revealed by the direct detection of LyC photons, we find that the EW(H beta)-beta method gives a broadly consistent estimate for f(esc), although the error bars remain very large. We also discuss how a combination of f(esc) measurements based on direct and indirect methods can shed light on the LyC escape mechanism and the anisotropy of the leakage.

The SR 24 multistar system hosts both circumprimary and circumsecondary disks, which are strongly misaligned with each other. The circumsecondary disk is circumbinary in nature. Interestingly, both disks are interacting, and they possibly rotate in opposite directions. To investigate the nature of this unique twin disk system, we present 01 resolution near-infrared polarized intensity images of the circumstellar structures around SR 24, obtained with HiCIAO mounted on the Subaru 8.2 m telescope. Both the circumprimary disk and the circumsecondary disk are resolved and have elongated features. While the position angle of the major axis and radius of the near-IR (NIR) polarization disk around SR 24S are 55° and 137 au, respectively, those around SR 24N are 110° and 34 au, respectively. With regard to overall morphology, the circumprimary disk around SR 24S shows strong asymmetry, whereas the circumsecondary disk around SR 24N shows relatively strong symmetry. Our NIR observations confirm the previous claim that the circumprimary and circumsecondary disks are misaligned from each other. Both the circumprimary and circumsecondary disks show similar structures in 12CO observations in terms of its size and elongation direction. This consistency is because both NIR and 12CO are tracing surface layers of the flared disks. As the radius of the polarization disk around SR 24N is roughly consistent with the size of the outer Roche lobe, it is natural to interpret the polarization disk around SR 24N as a circumbinary disk surrounding the SR 24Nb–Nc system.

We analyzed the young (2.8 Myr-old) binary system FS Tau A using near-infrared (H-band) high -contrast polarimetry data from Subaru/HiCIAO and submillimeter CO (J = 2-1) line emission data from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Both the near-infrared and submillimeter observations reveal several clear structures extending to similar to 240 au from the stars. Based on these observations at different wavelengths, we report the following discoveries. One arm-like structure detected in the near-infrared band initially extends from the south of the binary with a subsequent turn to the northeast, corresponding to two bar-like structures detected in ALMA observations with an local standard of rest kinematic (LSRK) velocity of 1.19-5.64 km s(-1). Another feature detected in the near-infrared band extends initially from the north of the binary, relating to an arm-like structure detected in ALMA observations with an LSRK velocity of 8.17-16.43 km s(-1). From their shapes and velocities, we suggest that these structures can mostly be explained by two streamers that connect the outer circumbinary disk and the central binary components. These discoveries will be helpful for understanding the evolution of streamers and circumstellar disks in young binary systems.

We study variability of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by using the deep optical multiband photometry data obtained from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC SSP) survey in the COSMOS field. The images analyzed here were taken with 8, 10, 13, and 15 epochs over three years in the $g$, $r$, $i$, and $z$ bands, respectively. We identified 491 robust variable AGN candidates, down to $i=25$ mag and with redshift up to $4.26$. Ninety percent of the variability-selected AGNs are individually identified with the X-ray sources detected in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey. We investigate their properties in variability by using structure function analysis and find that the structure function for low-luminosity AGNs ($L_{\mathrm{bol}}\lesssim10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$) shows a positive correlation with luminosity, which is the opposite trend for the luminous quasars. This trend is likely to be caused by larger contribution of the host galaxy light for lower-luminosity AGNs. Using the model templates of galaxy spectra, we evaluate the amount of host galaxy contribution to the structure function analysis and find that dominance of the young stellar population is needed to explain the observed luminosity dependence. This suggests that low-luminosity AGNs at $0.8\lesssim z\lesssim1.8$ are predominantly hosted in star-forming galaxies. The X-ray stacking analysis reveals the significant emission from the individually X-ray undetected AGNs in our variability-selected sample. The stacked samples show very large hardness ratios in their stacked X-ray spectrum, which suggests that these optically variable sources have large soft X-ray absorption by dust-free gas., Comment: 27 pages, 22 figures. Aim: We investigated personal protective equipment (PPE) use and its shortage, training, and adverse events among healthcare workers (HCWs) in the intensive care unit (ICU) during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in Japan and compared the results with an international survey that used the same methodology. Methods: This web-based survey was conducted from April 14 to May 6, 2020, in Japan and included HCWs directly involved in ICU management of COVID-19 patients. A survey invitation was emailed using the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine's mailing list. Results: We analyzed 460 valid responses from among 976 responses. The N95/FFP2 mask (77%) was most frequently used than in the international study, although half of our respondents reported reuse of single-use N95/FFP2 masks. The median duration (1 hour) of uninterrupted PPE use per shift was less than that in the international study. The commonest PPE-related adverse event was experiencing intense heat (75%). Logistic regression analysis revealed that being a nurse was independently associated with experiencing intense heat. Conclusion: PPE shortage and frequent mask reuse were prevalent during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan. Intense heat is the most significant symptom, especially for nurses, even with short-duration PPE use. Strategies to protect HCWs from dehydration and intense heat stroke are needed.

We search for galaxies with a strong Balmer break (Balmer break galaxies; BBGs) at z ˜ 6 over a 0.41 deg2 effective area in the COSMOS field. Based on rich imaging data, including data obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), three candidates are identified by their extremely red K–[3.6] colors, as well as by nondetection in the X-ray, optical, far-infrared, and radio bands. The nondetection in the deep ALMA observations suggests that they are not dusty galaxies but BBGs at z ˜ 6, although contamination from active galactic nuclei at z ˜ 0 cannot be completely ruled out for the moment. Our spectral energy distribution analyses reveal that the BBG candidates at z ˜ 6 have stellar masses of ≈5 × 1010 M⊙ dominated by old stellar populations with ages of ≳ 700 Myr. Assuming that all three candidates are real BBGs at z ˜ 6, we estimate the stellar mass density to be ${2.4}_{-1.3}^{+2.3}\times {10}^{4}\,{M}_{\odot }$ Mpc‑3. This is consistent with an extrapolation from the lower-redshift measurements. The onset of star formation in the three BBG candidates is expected to be several hundred million yr before the observed epoch of z ˜ 6. We estimate the star formation rate density (SFRD) contributed by progenitors of the BBGs to be 2.4–12 × 10‑5 M⊙ yr‑1 Mpc‑3 at z > 14 (99.7% confidence range). Our result suggests a smooth evolution of the SFRD beyond z = 8.

We present H-band polarized scattered light imagery and JHK high-contrast spectroscopy of the protoplanetary disk around HD 163296 observed with the High-Contrast Coronographic Imager for Adaptive Optics (HiCIAO) and Subaru Coronagraphic Extreme Adaptive Optics (SCExAO)/Coronagraphic High Angular Resolution Imaging Spectrograph (CHARTS) instruments at Subaru Observatory. The polarimetric imagery resolve a broken ring structure surrounding HD 163296 that peaks at a distance along the major axis of 0 ''.65 (66 au) and extends out to 0 ''.98 (100 au) along the major axis. Our 2011 H-band data exhibit clear axisymmetry, with the NW and SE side of the disk exhibiting similar intensities. Our data are clearly different from 2016 epoch H-band observations of the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE), which found a strong 2.7 x asymmetry between the NW and SE side of the disk. Collectively, these results indicate the presence of time-variable, non-azimuthally symmetric illumination of the outer disk. While our SCExAO/CHARIS data are sensitive enough to recover the planet candidate identified from NIRC2 in the thermal infrared (IR), we fail to detect an object with JHK brightness nominally consistent with this object. This suggests that the candidate is either fainter in JHK bands than model predictions, possibly due to extinction from the disk or atmospheric dust/clouds, or that it is an artifact of the data set/data processing, such as a residual speckle or partially subtracted disk feature. Assuming standard hot-start evolutionary models and a system age of 5 Myr, we set new, direct mass limits for the inner (outer) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)-predicted protoplanet candidate along the major (minor) disk axis of of 1.5 (2) M-J.

The CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) uses data taken with the MegaCam mosaic imager on CFHT to produce images of 18.60 deg2 with median seeing of FWHM=0.92 arcsec and to a median depth of U = 27.1 AB (5 sigma in 2 arcsec apertures), with selected areas that total 1.36 deg2 reaching a median depth of U=27.7 AB. These are the deepest U-band images assembled to date over this large an area. These data are located in four fields also imaged to comparably faint levels in grizy and several narrowband filters as part of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). These CFHT and Subaru datasets will remain unmatched in their combination of area and depth until the advent of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). This paper provides an overview of the scientific motivation for CLAUDS and gives details of the observing strategy, observations, data reduction, and data merging with the HSC-SSP. Three early applications of these deep data are used to illustrate the potential of the dataset: deep U-band galaxy number counts, z~3 Lyman break galaxy (LBG) selection, and photometric redshifts improved by adding CLAUDS U to the Subaru HSC grizy photometry., Comment: MNRAS, in press

Both the circumprimary and circumsecondary disks show similar structures in $^{12}$CO observations in terms of its size and elongation direction. This consistency is because both NIR and $^{12}$CO are tracing surface layers of the flared disks. We report results of a search for galaxies at z>3 with Lyman continuum (LyC) emission using a narrow-band filter NB359 with Subaru / Suprime-Cam in a ~800 arcmin$^2$ blank field around the GOODS-N. We use 103 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and 8 AGNs with spectroscopic redshifts in a range between 3.06 and 3.5, and 157 photometrically selected z=3.1 Lyman $\alpha$ emitter (LAE) candidates as the targets. After removing galaxies spectroscopically confirmed to be contaminated by foreground sources, we found two SFGs and one AGN as candidate LyC emitting sources among the targets with spectroscopic redshifts. Among LAE candidates, five sources are detected in the NB359 image, and three among them may be contaminated by foreground sources. We compare the sample galaxies in the GOODS-N with those in the SSA22, where a prominent protocluster at z=3.1 is known and the LyC search using the same NB359 filter has been made. Frequency of galaxies with LyC leakage in the SSA22 field may be about two times higher than the galaxies in the GOODS-N with the sample UV magnitude range, although the numbers of LyC detections in these fields are too small to make a statistically significant conclusion. By combining the sample galaxies in these fields, we place the 3$\sigma$ upper limits of the observed LyC-to-UV flux density ratio and LyC escape fraction for galaxies at z=3.1 with absolute UV magnitude $M_{UV} < -18.8$ as ($f_{LyC}/f_{UV})_{obs} < 0.036$ and $f_{esc}^{abs}<8$\%, respectively., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures. It means that a significant fraction of the UV-selected LBGs at $z \sim 4$ is on-going active and dust obscured star-forming galaxies. We compare the IR to UV luminosity ratio assuming the dust attenuation laws with the sub-millimeter observations from previous works. The result suggests that the Calzetti-like dust attenuation law is preferable for the active and dusty star-forming LBGs at $z = 4$. We also find that an extrapolation of the $\beta_{\mathrm{int}}$-$M_{\mathrm{UV,int}}$ relation toward the fainter magnitude range below our sample magnitude limit intersects the $\beta_{\mathrm{obs}}$-$M_{\mathrm{UV,obs}}$ relation previously obtained in the deeper narrow-area observations at $M_{\mathrm{UV}} = -18.9$ and $\beta = -1.94$, which coincides with the break point of $\beta_{\mathrm{obs}}$-$M_{\mathrm{UV,obs}}$ relation observed so far. We analyzed the young (2.8-Myr-old) binary system FS Tau A using near-infrared (H-band) high-contrast polarimetry data from Subaru/HiCIAO and sub-millimeter CO (J=2-1) line emission data from ALMA. Both the near-infrared and sub-millimeter observations reveal several clear structures extending to $\sim$240 AU from the stars. Based on these observations at different wavelengths, we report the following discoveries. One arm-like structure detected in the near-infrared band initially extends from the south of the binary with a subsequent turn to the northeast, corresponding to two bar-like structures detected in ALMA observations with an LSRK velocity of 1.19-5.64 km/s. Another feature detected in the near-infrared band extends initially from the north of the binary, relating to an arm-like structure detected in ALMA observations with an LSRK velocity of 8.17-16.43 km/s. From their shapes and velocities, we suggest that these structures can mostly be explained by two streamers that connect the outer circumbinary disk and the central binary components. These discoveries will be helpful for understanding the evolution of streamers and circumstellar disks in young binary systems., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We search for galaxies with a strong Balmer break (Balmer Break Galaxies; BBGs) at $z \sim 6$ over a 0.41 deg$^2$ effective area in the COSMOS field. Based on rich imaging data, including data obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), three candidates are identified by their extremely red $K - [3.6]$ colors as well as by non-detection in X-ray, optical, far-infrared (FIR), and radio bands. The non-detection in the deep ALMA observations suggests that they are not dusty galaxies but BBGs at $z \sim 6$, although contamination from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) at $z \sim 0$ cannot be completely ruled out for the moment. Our spectral energy distribution (SED) analyses reveal that the BBG candidates at $z \sim 6$ have stellar masses of $\approx 5 \times 10^{10} M_{\odot}$ dominated by old stellar populations with ages of $\gtrsim 700$ Myr. Assuming that all the three candidates are real BBGs at $z \sim 6$, we estimate the stellar mass density (SMD) to be $2.4^{+2.3}_{-1.3} \times 10^{4} M_{\odot}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. This is consistent with an extrapolation from the lower redshift measurements. The onset of star formation in the three BBG candidates is expected to be several hundred million years before the observed epoch of $z \sim 6$. We estimate the star-formation rate density (SFRD) contributed by progenitors of the BBGs to be 2.4 -- 12 $\times 10^{-5} M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1} $Mpc$^{-3}$ at $z > 14$ (99.7\% confidence range). The SR24 multi-star system hosts both circumprimary and circumsecondary disks, which are strongly misaligned from each other. The circumsecondary disk is circumbinary in nature. Interestingly, both disks are interacting, and they possibly rotate in opposite directions. To investigate the nature of this unique twin disk system, we present 0.''1 resolution near-infrared polarized intensity images of the circumstellar structures around SR24, obtained with HiCIAO mounted on the Subaru 8.2 m telescope. Both the circumprimary disk and the circumsecondary disk are resolved and have elongated features. While the position angle of the major axis and radius of the NIR polarization disk around SR24S are 55$^{\circ}$ and 137 au, respectively, those around SR24N are 110$^{\circ}$ and 34 au, respectively. With regard to overall morphology, the circumprimary disk around SR24S shows strong asymmetry, whereas the circumsecondary disk around SR24N shows relatively strong symmetry. Our NIR observations confirm the previous claim that the circumprimary and circumsecondary disks are misaligned from each other. Both the circumprimary and circumsecondary disks show similar structures in $^{12}$CO observations in terms of its size and elongation direction. The CFHT Large Area U-band Deep Survey (CLAUDS) uses data taken with the MegaCam mosaic imager on CFHT to produce images of 18.60 deg2 with median seeing of FWHM=0.92 arcsec and to a median depth of U = 27.1 AB (5 sigma in 2 arcsec apertures), with selected areas that total 1.36 deg2 reaching a median depth of U=27.7 AB. These are the deepest U-band images assembled to date over this large an area. These data are located in four fields also imaged to comparably faint levels in grizy and several narrowband filters as part of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP). These CFHT and Subaru datasets will remain unmatched in their combination of area and depth until the advent of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). This paper provides an overview of the scientific motivation for CLAUDS and gives details of the observing strategy, observations, data reduction, and data merging with the HSC-SSP. Three early applications of these deep data are used to illustrate the potential of the dataset: deep U-band galaxy number counts, z~3 Lyman break galaxy (LBG) selection, and photometric redshifts improved by adding CLAUDS U to the Subaru HSC grizy photometry., Comment: MNRAS, in press

We conducted high-contrast polarimetry observations of T Tau in the H-band, using the High Contrast Instrument for the Subaru Next Generation Adaptive Optics instrument mounted on the Subaru Telescope, revealing structures as near as 0 1 from the stars T Tau N and T Tau S. The whole T Tau system is found to be surrounded by nebulalike envelopes, and several outflow-related structures are detected in these envelopes. We analyzed the detailed polarization patterns of the circumstellar structures near each component of this triple young star system and determined constraints on the circumstellar disks and outflow structures. We suggest that the nearly face-on circumstellar disk of T Tau N is no larger than 0.''8, or 117 au, in the northwest, based on the existence of a hole in this direction, and no larger than 0.''27, or 40 au, in the south. A new structure, N5, extends to about 0.''42, or 59 au, southwest of the star, and is believed to be part of the disk. We suggest that T Tau S is surrounded by a highly inclined circumbinary disk with a radius of about 0.''3, or 44 au, with a position angle of about 30 degrees, that is misaligned with the orbit of the T Tau S binary. After analyzing the positions and polarization vector patterns of the outflow-related structures, we suggest that T Tau S should trigger the well-known E-W outflow, and is also likely to be responsible for a southwest precessing outflow coil and a possible south outflow.

We present H-band polarized scattered light imagery and JHK high-contrast spectroscopy of the protoplanetary disk around HD 163296 observed with the HiCIAO and SCExAO/CHARIS instruments at Subaru Observatory. The polarimetric imagery resolve a broken ring structure surrounding HD 163296 that peaks at a distance along the major axis of 0.65 (66 AU) and extends out to 0.98 (100 AU) along the major axis. Our 2011 H-band data exhibit clear axisymmetry, with the NW- and SE- side of the disk exhibiting similar intensities. Our data are clearly different than 2016 epoch H-band observations from VLT/SPHERE that found a strong 2.7x asymmetry between the NW- and SE-side of the disk. Collectively, these results indicate the presence of time variable, non-azimuthally symmetric illumination of the outer disk. Based on our 3D-MCRT modeling of contemporaneous IR spectroscopic and H-band polarized intensity imagery of the system, we suggest that while the system could plausibly host an inclined inner disk component, such a component is unlikely to be responsible for producing the observed time-dependent azimuthal variations in the outer scattered light disk of the system. While our SCExAO/CHARIS data are sensitive enough to recover the planet candidate identified from NIRC2 in the thermal IR, we fail to detect an object with a corresponding JHK brightness estimated from the atmospheric models of Baraffe et al. 2003. This suggests that the candidate is either fainter in JHK bands than model predictions, possibly due to extinction from the disk or atmospheric dust/clouds, or that it is an artifact of the dataset/data processing. Our SCExAO/CHARIS data lower the IR mass limits for planets inferred at larger stellocentric separations; however, these ALMA-predicted protoplanet candidates are currently still consistent with direct imaging constraints., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

We present $H$- and $K_{\rm s}$-bands observations of the LkH$\alpha$ 330 disk with a multi-band detection of the large gap and spiral-like structures. The morphology of the outer disk ($r\sim$$0\farcs3$) at PA=0--45$^\circ$ and PA=180--290$^\circ$ are likely density wave-induced spirals and comparison between our observational results and simulations suggests a planet formation. We have also investigated the azimuthal profiles at the ring and the outer-disk regions as well as radial profiles in the directions of the spiral-like structures and semi-major axis. Azimuthal analysis shows a large variety in wavelength and implies that the disk has non-axisymmetric dust distributions. The radial profiles in the major-axis direction (PA=$271^\circ$) suggest that the outer region ($r\geq0\farcs25$) may be influenced by shadows of the inner region of the disk. The spiral-like directions (PA=10$^\circ$ and 230$^\circ$) show different radial profiles, which suggests that the surfaces of the spiral-like structures are highly flared and/or have different dust properties. Finally, a color-map of the disk shows a lack of an outer eastern region in the $H$-band disk, which may hint the presence of an inner object that casts a directional shadow onto the disk., Comment: 12pages, 16 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in AJ
