Dans le Sahara septentrional algérien, Stipagrostispungensavec la note 5, sur l'échelle de Braun Blanquet, est l'espèce la plus abondante et la plus dominante. Elle représente à elle seule plus de 80 % des taux de présence et de recouvrement. Le tonnage de sa phytomasse aérienne, dans les sols sableux, dépasse les 2 900 kg de MS. Ha-1.En raison des multiples usages pratiqués par les populations sahariennes de cette plante, hérités des savoirs locaux, ses voies de valorisation sont prometteuses et peut être qualifiée de très pertinente sur plan ethnobotanique. Elle s'utilise notamment pour confectionner des abris et habitations précaires appelées "Zriba"; En matière d'alimentation humaine, ses graines sont pillées pour être mélangées avec les dattes; En pharmacopée s'utilise en tisane pour traiter maux de ventre. Enfin, elle constitue un intérêt pastoral certain, puisqu'elle présente une valeur nutritive de l'ordre de 0,46 Ufl.kg-1 de MS et de 50 g de PDIE.kg-1 de MS. A cet effet, le "Drinn", Stipagrostis pungens,est la plante vivace la plus broutée par les dromadaires, elle est même fauchée et le foin est commercialisé pour nourrir des animaux d'élevage en stabulation.

However, a large variability between species related mainly to their different ecotypes and secondly to their soil conditions is observed. The in vitro digestibility is variable also depending on the species studied (22 to 37%), and its values are positively correlated with TNM and negatively with parietal compounds. Besides, the time study allows observing high contents in parietal compound in summer and relatively high contents in TNM in spring, so engendering the best digestibility in spring and lowest in summer. La présence d'animaux au comportement agressif (ovins, caprins, bovins) accentue la situation perturbée de ces parcours, contrairement au dromadaire qui contribue à l'équilibre de cet écosystème. Notre suivi sur le comportement alimentaire du dromadaire, dans le Sahara septentrional algérien, a montré que son régime alimentaire est diversifié en été et au printemps (9 et 6 espèces consommées) et se base essentiellement sur les plantes spontanées vivaces. Les espèces broutées se composent globalement de 13 espèces appartenant à 10 familles variant suivant les saisons et l'offre fourragère des parcours. Dans une station donnée, 3 espèces représentent entre 67,75 % et 100 % des quantités consommées. Une de ces espèces, le "Drinn" (Stipagrostis pungens) est consommée en toutes saisons et en proportions importantes (23 à 43 % du régime). De point de vue quantitatif, le suivi des prises alimentaires, selon la méthode du nombre de bouchées, a montré que le dromadaire pratique une alimentation ambulante, parcourant quotidiennement de 20 à 50 km et prélève de petites quantités de chaque plante, estimées en nombre de 1 à 4 coups de dents, donnant des quantités de 0,7 à 3,9 g pour chaque espèce. Les quantités de matière sèche journalières, ainsi ingérées, varient de 4,04 à 39,4 kg, donnant une moyenne estimée de 2,7 à 3,4 kg MS/ 100 kg de PV/jour, suivant les saisons et la composition floristique du régime. Ces résultats sont en accord avec le comportement alimentaire spécifique du dromadaire qui lui permet d'être la seule espèce capable de mieux utiliser son écosystème hyper-aride et bien adaptée aux conditions désertiques.

Euphorbia is among the largest genera of angiosperms, with about 2000 species that are renowned for their remarkably diverse growth forms. To clarify phylogenetic relationships in the genus, we used maximum likelihood, Bayesian, and parsimony analyses of DNA sequence data from 10 markers representing all three plant genomes, averaging more than 16. kbp for each accession. Taxon sampling included 176 representatives from Euphorbioideae (including 161 of Euphorbia). Analyses of these data robustly resolve a backbone topology of four major, subgeneric clades- Esula, Rhizanthium, Euphorbia, and Chamaesyce-that are successively sister lineages. Ancestral state reconstructions of six reproductive and growth form characters indicate that the earliest Euphorbia species were likely woody, non-succulent plants with helically arranged leaves and 5-glanded cyathia in terminal inflorescences. The highly modified growth forms and reproductive features in Euphorbia have independent origins within the subgeneric clades. Examples of extreme parallelism in trait evolution include at least 14 origins of xeromorphic growth forms and at least 13 origins of seed caruncles. The evolution of growth form and inflorescence position are significantly correlated, and a pathway of evolutionary transitions is supported that has implications for the evolution of Euphorbia xerophytes of large stature. Such xerophytes total more than 400 species and are dominants of vegetation types throughout much of arid Africa and Madagascar. © 2012.

Seed coat development of Harpagophytum procumbens (Devil's Claw) and the possible role of the mature seed coat in seed dormancy were studied by light microscopy (LM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). Very young ovules of H. procumbens have a single thick integument consisting of densely packed thin-walled parenchyma cells that are uniform in shape and size. During later developmental stages the parenchyma cells differentiate into 4 different zones. Zone 1 is the multi-layered inner epidermis of the single integument that eventually develops into a tough impenetrable covering that tightly encloses the embryo. The inner epidermis is delineated on the inside by a few layers of collapsed remnant endosperm cell wall layers and on the outside by remnant cell wall layers of zone 2, also called the middle layer. Together with the inner epidermis these remnant cell wall layers from collapsed cells may contribute towards seed coat impermeability. Zone 2 underneath the inner epidermis consists of large thin-walled parenchyma cells. Zone 3 is the sub-epidermal layers underneath the outer epidermis referred to as a hypodermis and zone 4 is the single outer seed coat epidermal layer. Both zones 3 and 4 develop unusual secondary wall thickenings. The primary cell walls of the outer epidermis and hypodermis disintegrated during the final stages of seed maturation, leaving only a scaffold of these secondary cell wall thickenings. In the mature seed coat the outer fibrillar seed coat consists of the outer epidermis and hypodermis and separates easily to reveal the dense, smooth inner epidermis of the seed coat. Outer epidermal and hypodermal wall thickenings develop over primary pit fields and arise from the deposition of secondary cell wall material in the form of alternative electron dense and electron lucent layers. ESEM studies showed that the outer epidermal and hypodermal seed coat layers are exceptionally hygroscopic

Drought is a reoccurring problem in this part ofTanzania, which affects a majority of the towns’ farmers. This fact is likely to affect thechoice of crop as well as the limitations when it comes to the choices in cultivation. But thechoice itself has implications on its surrounding and can be affected by the surrounding. Tounderstand the circumstances, a wider picture will be depicted and an evaluation of thegeography of Babati and on its climate conditions. The results from this study suggest thatlack of crop rotation pose as a problem that should be studied. Furthermore, green manurefrom legumes and plants like Tithonia could be a less expensive alternative but can stillfunction as an effective fertilizer. Concerning the drought issue the study can not concludethat drought resistant crops would have any big improving effects. Nevertheless there is someevidence advocating that it could be apart of the solution in terms of avoiding some of thenegative effects brought on by drought.

A cladistic analysis based on rbcL gene sequences from a representative sample of 18 species yields three most parsimonious trees that strongly support monophyly of Selaginellaceae. Within Selaginellaceae, the morphologically distinctive subgenus Selaginella is resolved as sister group to a clade composed of all other species, here termed the rhizophoric clade. In the rhizophoric clade, subgenus Stachygynandrum is paraphyletic to subgenera Ericetorum, Tetragonostachys, and Heterostachys. Monophyly of Ericetorum and Tetragonostachys is strongly corroborated. Results support a close relationship between "resurrection plants" in Stachygynandrum and the mat-forming or tufted drought-tolerant species of Tetragonostachys, indicating a common origin of xerophytism in these groups. A close relationship for all isophyllous species, as hypothesized in many classifications, is not supported by the rbcL data. Leaf isophylly and reduction in Ericetorum and Tetragonostachys most probably represent independent reversals of the marked anisophyllous condition in Stachygynandrum, Leaf reduction is one of a suite of characters that may have evolved in response to seasonal drought.
