The Arctic Ocean is a fundamental node in the global hydrological cycle and the ocean's thermohaline circulation. We here assess the system's key functions and processes: 1) the delivery of fresh and low salinity waters to the Arctic Ocean by river inflow, net precipitation, distillation during the freeze/thaw cycle and Pacific Ocean inflows; 2) the disposition (e.g. sources, pathways and storage) of freshwater components within the Arctic Ocean; and 3) the release and export of freshwater components into the bordering convective domains of the North Atlantic. We then examine physical, chemical or biological processes which are influenced or constrained by the local quantities and geochemical qualities of fresh water; these include: stratification and vertical mixing, ocean heat flux, nutrient supply, primary production, ocean acidification and biogeochemical cycling. Internal to the Arctic the joint effects of sea ice decline and hydrological cycle intensification have strengthened coupling between the ocean and the atmosphere (e.g. wind and ice-drift stresses, solar radiation, heat and moisture exchange), the bordering drainage basins (e.g. river discharge, sediment transport, erosion) and terrestrial ecosystems (e.g. Arctic greening, dissolved and particulate carbon loading, altered phenology of biotic components). External to the Arctic freshwater export acts as both a constraint to and a necessary ingredient for deep convection in the bordering subarctic gyres and thus affects the global thermohaline circulation. Geochemical fingerprints attained within the Arctic Ocean are likewise exported into the neighboring subarctic systems and beyond. Finally, we discuss observed and modelled functions and changes in this system on seasonal, annual and decadal time scales, and discuss mechanisms that link the marine system to atmospheric, terrestrial and cryospheric systems.

A balloon-borne liquid nitrogen cooled Fourier transform spectrometer system was test-flown from Holloman Air Force Base on 8 October 1980. The system and the modifications to it required for balloon application are described and the flight results discussed. Samples of the interferograms obtained during the flight and their transforms are presented. Procedures for improving the performance on subsequent flights are discussed. (Author)

As an index of delayed hypersensitivity in vitro halothane macrophage migration inhibition factor tests (halothane-MIF tests) were performed on peripheral blood lymphocytes from five patients with halothane hepatitis. Twenty-two subjects exposed to halothane, but with no evidence of jaundice, five 'healthy' hospital anaesthetists, nine jaundiced subjects without halothane exposure, and 10 healthy subjects with no history of exposure to halothane were also tested. The halothane-MIF test was positive in four of the five patients with halothane-induced hepatitis; the negative result was in a patient on steroid treatment. The test was negative in all other subjects. Our findings suggest that the halothane-MIF test may be of value in the diagnosis of halothane-induced hepatitis and as a screening procedure for the identification of susceptible subjects.

The absorption spectra of the 4.3 micron band was measured at altitudes from ten to thirty kilometers along slant paths in the atmosphere using the sun as a radiation source. These spectra were obtained by the use of a balloon-borne grating spectrometer having a resolution of 0.5/cm. This resolution is high enough to require a line by line calculation to interpret the spectra. By making two assumptions it has been possible to calculate spectra using a small computer that agree quite well with the observed spectra. The primary approximations used were the assumption of like rotational structure for all isotopes and excited states, and the assumption of constant displacement between the various states of C(12) and C(13). At the higher altitudes the Lorentz broadening theory resulted in a satisfactory agreement between calculations and the experimental results, but at the lower altitudes use of the empirical modification proposed by Benedict was necessary to obtain agreement in the region of the high frequency end of the band. The calculations cover the frequencies from 2235/cm to 2415/cm.

Herewith is submitted historical report, Luzon campaign, in accordance with AR 345-105. This report covers the operations of the 43d Infantry Division in the landing in Lingayen Gulf; the initial battle for the liberation of Luzon, fought in the mountains north of the Lingayen Plain; the destruction of the enemy defenders west of Fort Stotsenburg; the turning of the Shimbu Line east of Manila; and finally the seizure of Ipo Dam, last Japanese stronghold on southern Luzon.
