Abstract

Kinship verification is the task of determining whether a parent-child, sibling, or grandparent-grandchild relationship exists between two people and is important in social media applications, forensic investigations, finding missing children, and reuniting families. We demonstrate high quality kinship verification by participating in the 2021 Recognizing Families in the Wild challenge which provides the largest publicly available dataset in the field. Our approach is among the top 3 winning entries in the competition. We ensemble models written by both human experts and a foundation model, OpenAI Codex, trained on text and code. We use Codex to generate model variants, and also demonstrate its ability to generate entire running programs for kinship verification tasks of specific relationships., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

This thesis will seek to explore the doctrine of election as it appears in the Old Testament. It will attempt to provide a robust, biblical conception of the doctrine, shedding light on its nature and purpose, viewing the Bible as a singular story of God’s redemptive work. It will consider and assess election as God’s act of divine prerogative—being at times individual but primarily corporate. While inherently partial, effort will be taken to defend the doctrine against common objections this partiality draws. Rather, it will be shown that as the means by which He initiated His gracious plan of salvation, God’s elective acts were the means by which His character and ultimate plan of salvation was revealed to mankind.

Abstract

In this thesis two questions are addressed. First is the question of the time complexity of an algorithm gathering information on a tree with unknown topology. The tree is known to have maximum depth $D$ and maximum degree $\Delta$. This has been an open problem since being asked by Chlamtac and Kutten in 1985. This thesis resolves the question with upper and lower bounds that are essentially tight. The second question this dissertation addresses is what proportion of graphs have a fixed type of spectrum. We show that at most a $2^{-c n^{3/2}}$ proportion of graphs on $n$ vertices have integral spectrum. This improves on previous results of Ahmadi, Alon, Blake, and Shparlinski, who in 2009 showed that the proportion of such graphs was exponentially small.

6. Taming the Knight's Tour: Minimizing Turns and Crossings

Abstract

We introduce two new metrics of "simplicity" for knight's tours: the number of turns and the number of crossings. We give a novel algorithm that produces tours with $9.25n+O(1)$ turns and $12n+O(1)$ crossings on an $n\times n$ board, and we show lower bounds of $(6-\epsilon)n$ and $4n-O(1)$ on the respective problems of minimizing these metrics. Hence, our algorithm achieves approximation ratios of $9.25/6+o(1)$ and $3+o(1)$. Our algorithm takes linear time and is fully parallelizable, i.e., the tour can be computed in $O(n^2/p)$ time using $p$ processors in the CREW PRAM model. We generalize our techniques to rectangular boards, high-dimensional boards, symmetric tours, odd boards with a missing corner, and tours for $(1,4)$-leapers. In doing so, we show that these extensions also admit a constant approximation ratio on the minimum number of turns, and on the number of crossings in most cases., Comment: 43 pages, 29 figures. 65A0528 TO 007, There has recently been considerable interest in cruising for curbside parking as a major contributor to traffic congestion in the downtown areas of major cities. This paper focuses on the expected search time for a curbside parking space. The literature has employed three different approaches to estimate expected cruising-for-parking time: direct measurement, inference based on the equilibrium condition that (for the marginal parker) the expected cost of curbside parking equals the expected cost of garage parking, and inference based on the observed occupancy rate of curbside parking and an assumed statistical relationship between expected cruising-for-parking time and the curbside parking occupancy rate. The last approach typically obtains estimates of expected cruising-for-parking times that are lower, and with high occupancy rates much lower, than those estimated using the other two approaches. This paper takes a step towards resolving this inconsistency by demonstrating, through computer simulation of cars cruising for parking around a circle in stochastic steady state, that an approximating assumption in the derived statistical relationship between expected cruising-for-parking time and the curbside parking occupancy rate leads to underestimation of average cruising-for-parking time, and at high occupancy rates very considerable underestimation. The paper also identifies several "effects" that contribute to the approximating assumption being an increasingly poor one as the occupancy rate increases.
