Researchers in the Aeronautical Engineering Technology program at Purdue University are exploring innovative ways to introduce and integrate aircraft maintenance data from their advanced training fleet of networked aircraft into an undergraduate Aviation curriculum. This report describes a work in progress toward that goal. This initiative will better prepare students for an industry where synthetic process visualization, drag and drop planning screens and ‘‘smart’’ personal computing device applications play a significant role in problem solving and daily aircraft operations. The goal is to equip students at all levels of the curriculum with awareness and modern methods of process visualization, troubleshooting and research using modern, networked air vehicles.

The present study examines the extent to which blacks are segregated in the suburban community of Coconut Grove, Florida. Hypersegregation, or the general tendency for blacks and whites to live apart, was examined in terms of four distinct dimensions: evenness, exposure, clustering, and concentration. Together, these dimensions define the geographic traits of the target area. Alone these indices can not capture the multi-dimensional levels of segregation and, therefore, by themselves underestimate the severity of segregation and isolation in this community. This study takes a contemporary view of segregation in a Dade County community to see if segregation is the catalyst to the sometime cited violent response of blacks. This study yields results that support the information in the literature review and the thesis research questions sections namely, that the blacks within the Grove do respond violently to the negative effects that racial segregation causes. This thesis is unique in two ways. It examines segregation in a suburban environment rather than an urban inner city, and it presents a responsive analysis of the individuals studied, rather than relying only on demographic and statistical data.

An approach is developed that simplifies calculation of the dynamic characteristics of a self-acting, gas-lubricated slider bearing system. This technique avoids a lengthy simultaneous solution of the equations of motion of the slider and the time-dependent Reynolds' equation, while providing additional design information that is otherwise unobtainable. The equilibrium pressure distribution in the gas film is obtained using the Bunov-Galerkin formulation of the finite element method. By considering small perturbations of the slider bearing system about equilibrium, two coupled, second-order partial differential equations are derived, which define the in-phase and out-of-phase perturbation pressures in the gas film. These perturbation pressures are integrated to obtain the frequency dependent, non-symmetrical stiffness and damping matrices for the slider bearing. Using the stiffness and damping properties of the gas bearing and slider support, the equations of motion for the entire slider bearing system are derived. The frequency dependence of the stiffness and damping matrices renders the eigenvalue problem nonlinear, and the eigensolutions are obtained iteratively using Brent's method. Because of the non-symmetrical stiffness and damping matrices, a similarity transformation based on the left and right modal matrices is used to decouple the equations of motion. This decoupling is approximate because of the frequency dependence of the stiffness and damping matrices, but the resulting damped natural frequencies are shown to be in excellent agreement with published experimental data. Fractions of critical damping obtained for several slider geometries also successfully predict observed instabilities. The mode shapes of slider oscillation, unobtainable with other methods, permit calculation of the center of rotation for the coupled, pitch-heave modes; this information can be used to determine the optimum location for the magnetic transduc

Previous studies of the mechanical behavior of warm rolled high magnesium aluminum-magnesium alloys have shown that excellent tensile properties can be developed in these materials. Several questions raised in these previous efforts regarding recrystallization and precipitation of the intermetallic beta phase are addressed in this thesis. It is shown that, for temperatures T less than Ts (where Ts is the solvus temperature) the only microstructural change is the precipitation of the beta phase and no crystallization occurs, even with prior cold work. Further studies of microstructures developed during warm working, with and without prior cold work, also indicate that precipitation and recovery dominate the microstructural changes in warm rolling at temperatures below the solvus for the alloy. Recrystallization will occur readily, but only at temperature in excess of the solvus. Strengthening by warm working, then, occurs by mechanisms similar to cold work strengthening in solid solution alloys. (Author)

A report by Hunt (1978) is used as a basis for development of a postulated explanation for the learning facilitation achieved by an overt self-assessment process. Hunt (1978) found that the addition of an overt self-assessment step to the stimulus-response cycle of a paired-associates learning task facilitates learning, as much as 25% over a normal learning control condition. An item by item re-analysis of Hunt's (1978) data, by this student, shows that the response-assessment order of responding produces more extensive use of 'sure' assessments, than does the assessment-response order of responding. It is herein proposed that overt self-assessment induces an increased use of 'sure' assessments, which leads to both greater disconfirmation and greater confirmation of subject-held expectancies of assessment and response outcomes. Outcomes that disconfirm or confirm expectancies are 'biological' events that are either 'novel' or 'reinforcing' in nature, and that have the capacity of eliciting the fundamental condition necessary for learning, which is cortical arousal (Johnston, 1979). A paired-associates learning experiment using CVC trigrams of a 65% meaningfulness level sought to replicate portions of Hunt's (1978) study for comparison with the effects of a new variable, nature of the assessment scale. The results of the experiment were negative. However, a cross-comparison of the data and outcome of the Hunt (1978) study, with the data and outcome of this study shows an internal consistency with the theoretical notions., Master's thesis.

Reaction models for bio-oxidation using a sheet flow reactor with a fixed biological film similar to that used in plastic media trickling filtration are developed. The models utilize plug flow hydraulics and accept various descriptions of BOD removal kinetics including: zero order, first order, retardant and concentration dependent mechanisms. Hydraulics, kinetics and film geometry are individually incorporated. System model equations are arranged into linear expressions which allow graphical determination of model applicability and rate constants from plots of experimental data. The design and operating characteristics of laboratory simulation equipment are presented. Simulation equipment consists of continuously fed inclined planes with effluent sedimentation and recirculation. Effluents can be fed from and returned to coldroom storage. Heating tapes control temperature above ambient levels. The principal objective of the Phase I investigation was to identify the industrial wastewater management problem as it exists today and is anticipated to exist in the future. Specific objectives of the study may be enumerated as follows: to inventory significant industrial wastewater effluents within the Study Area which discharge directly to receiving waters or to municipal collection systems; to project industrial waste discharges on ten year intervals to obtain estimates of wastewater flows for the years 1990-2020; to evaluate the wastes produced by each industrial category with respect to their compatibility for treatment in municipal wastewater systems; to delineate water requirements by specific industrial groups for different uses and identify sources of water which might be reused; to determine wastewater management policies being considered or implemented by state and local agencies and the effect of these policies on the treatment of industrial wastes; and to discuss the applicability of combined industrial wastewater treatment within special industrial wastewater treatment facilities and to discuss the feasibility of two such projects within the Study Area., Original contains color plates: All DDC reproductions will be in black and white. An analysis is presented of the causes, philosophies, goals, psychologies, and mechanisms of current youth movements in comparison with the Romantic movement in France.
