The Keel zinc/cadmium prospect occurs in Lower Carboniferous clastic sediments, on the down-faulted southern flank of a north-east/ south-west trending Lower Palaeozoic inlier. The wallrocks of the deposit are predominantly siliceous elastics which are overlain by reef and bioclastic limestones. Mineralization is closely associated with south-easterly dipping normal faults of late Hercynian age with an eastwest Caledonian strike, and occurs predominantly in the clastic sequences. Investigation into the distribution of Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Cd and Hg in the prospect area confirmed the absence of any primary dispersion pattern for these elements. The distribution of Ca, Mg, Na and K also gave no indication of even minor wallrock alteration or redistribution of these elements associated with the mineralizing processes. Chemical analysis of sphalerite, galena and pyrite indicated certain trace element associations. These however were proven to be mainly due to inclusions of chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and gangue minerals such as quartz and dolomite. Intensive investigation into the geochemistry and dispersion pattern for mercury in the Keel prospect area ultimately led to the development of an analytical technique whereby identification of mercury compounds in rock material was made possible. The analysis was carried out by measurement of the atomic absorption of mercury, evolved during controlled heating of samples, in a continuous air flow system. Evolved mercury peaks in natural rock samples were identified at approximately, 170°C, 220°C, 300°C, 520°C, 450°C and 600°C, correlating with artificially prepared standards of mercurous chloride, mercuric chloride, mercuric sulphide and mercuric oxide respectively. The 450°C and 600°C peaks correspond to mercury released from pyrite and sphalerite lattices respectively. Elemental mercury gave a release peak at 80°C and mercuric sulphate gave a triple release peak at 350°C, 420°C and 510°C; however these two phases did not attain major significance in the Keel area. Mercuric sulphide was found to be concentrated in the vicinity of base metal sulphides, while mercuric chloride was the predominant phase in rocks more remote from sulphide ore. These main zones are separated by a mixed zone of mercuric chloride and mercuric sulphide. Exploration in this area, using rock analysis could thus be aided by identification of the sulphide zone in mercury trace analysis, as the total mercury content does not always appear to be directly related to the proximity of sulphide ore

- Abstract
Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. Novel species of fungi described in the present study include the following from Australia: Vermiculariopsiella eucalypti, Mulderomyces natalis (incl. Mulderomyces gen. nov.), Fusicladium paraamoenum, Neotrimmatostroma paraexcentricum, and Pseudophloeospora eucalyptorum on leaves of Eucalyptus spp., Anungitea grevilleae (on leaves of Grevillea sp.), Pyrenochaeta acaciae (on leaves of Acacia sp.), and Brunneocarpos banksiae (incl. Brunneocarpos gen. nov.) on cones of Banksia attenuata. Novel foliicolous taxa from South Africa include Neosulcatispora strelitziae (on Strelitzia nicolai), Colletotrichum ledebouriae (on Ledebouria floridunda), Cylindrosympodioides brabejum (incl. Cylindrosympodioides gen. nov.) on Brabejum stellatifolium, Sclerostagonospora ericae (on Erica sp.), Setophoma cyperi (on Cyperus sphaerocephala), and Phaeosphaeria breonadiae (on Breonadia microcephala). Novelties described from Robben Island (South Africa) include Wojnowiciella cissampeli and Diaporthe cissampeli (both on Cissampelos capensis), Phaeotheca salicorniae (on Salicornia meyeriana), Paracylindrocarpon aloicola (incl. Paracylindrocarpon gen. nov.) on Aloe sp., and Libertasomyces myopori (incl. Libertasomyces gen. nov.) on Myoporum serratum. - Abstract
Novel species of fungi described in the present study include the following from Australia: Vermiculariopsiella eucalypti, Mulderomyces natalis (incl. Mulderomyces gen. nov.), Fusicladium paraamoenum, Neotrimmatostroma paraexcentricum, and Pseudophloeospora eucalyptorum on leaves of Eucalyptus spp., Anungitea grevilleae (on leaves of Grevillea sp.), Pyrenochaeta acaciae (on leaves of Acacia sp.), and Brunneocarpos banksiae (incl. Brunneocarpos gen. nov.) on cones of Banksia attenuata. Novel foliicolous taxa from South Africa include Neosulcatispora strelitziae (on Strelitzia nicolai), Colletotrichum ledebouriae (on Ledebouria floridunda), Cylindrosympodioides brabejum (incl. Cylindrosympodioides gen. nov.) on Brabejum stellatifolium, Sclerostagonospora ericae (on Erica sp.), Setophoma cyperi (on Cyperus sphaerocephala), and Phaeosphaeria breonadiae (on Breonadia microcephala). Novelties described from Robben Island (South Africa) include Wojnowiciella cissampeli and Diaporthe cissampeli (both on Cissampelos capensis), Phaeotheca salicorniae (on Salicornia meyeriana), Paracylindrocarpon aloicola (incl. Paracylindrocarpon gen. nov.) on Aloe sp., and Libertasomyces myopori (incl. Libertasomyces gen. nov.) on Myoporum serratum. Several novelties are recorded from La Réunion (France), namely Phaeosphaeriopsis agapanthi (on Agapanthus sp.), Roussoella solani (on Solanum mauritianum), Vermiculariopsiella acaciae (on Acacia heterophylla), Dothiorella acacicola (on Acacia mearnsii), Chalara clidemiae (on Clidemia hirta), Cytospora tibouchinae (on Tibouchina semidecandra), Diaporthe ocoteae (on Ocotea obtusata), Castanediella eucalypticola, Phaeophleospora eucalypticola and Fusicladium eucalypticola (on Eucalyptus robusta), Lareunionomyces syzygii (incl. Lareunionomyces gen. nov.) and Parawiesneriomyces syzygii (incl. Parawiesneriomyces gen. nov.) on leaves of Syzygium jambos. With the aim of clarifying the number of Pisolithus species in Macedonia, molecular analysis was carried out on seven specimens collected in oak forests in Macedonia during 1987 and 2005. New sequences were compared with previously published sequences included in public databases. Three Pisolithus species are identified in Macedonia: P. arhizus, P. capsulifer, and P. tinctorius.

8. A new representative of star-shaped fungi: Astraeus sirindhorniae sp. nov. from Thailand

- Abstract
Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary (PKWS) is a major hotspot of biological diversity in Thailand but its fungal diversity has not been thouroughly explored. A two-year macrofungal study of this remote locality has resulted in the recognition of a new species of a star-shaped gasteroid fungus in the genus Astraeus. This fungus has been identified based on a morphological approach and the molecular study of five loci (LSU nrDNA, 5.8S nrDNA, RPB1, RPB2 and EF1-a). Multigene phylogenetic analysis of this new species places it basal relative to other Astraeus, providing additional evidence for the SE Asian orgin of the genus. The fungus is named in honour of Her Majesty Princess Sirindhorn on the occasion the 84th birthday of her father, who have both been supportive of natural heritage studies in Thailand.

In order to verify some doubtful collections of Scleroderma Pers. species from Macedonia, 54 specimens were revised using morphological and molecular analyses. The 12 internal transcribed spacer of nuclear ribosomal DNA (ITS nrDNA) sequences obtained in this study were compared with previously published sequences included in public databases. According to the barcoding sequences, some Macedonian Scleroderma specimens were confirmed to belong to 4 species: S. areolatum Ehrenb., S. bovista Fr., S. meridionale Demoulin & Malençon, and S. verrucosum (Vaill.) Pers.

- Abstract
The genus Astraeus is shown to be even more complex than recent studies have found. There are problems defining what the molecular fingerprint is of the generic type species. The present article, based on molecular and morphological information and the classical literature, attempts to throw further light on these important ectomycorrhizal fungi. Our studies go part way in an endeavour to unravel the taxonomy and systematics of this genus, necessitating the recognition of at least three new species. Potential nomenclatural problems are also outlined.
