Abstract: The first-order ferrimagnet ErCo2 attracts interest not only because of metamagnetism and magnetocaloric effect just above TC ≈ 32–34 K but also because it is closely related with the itinerant metamagnetism of YCo2 and LuCo2. We study the electronic structure of single crystals with hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES). Magnetization measurements reconfirm the first-order magnetic transition, metamagnetism, and strong magnetic anisotropy. Calculated ErCo2 band structures of the ferrimagnetic and paramagnetic phases are presented in detail. In the ferrimagnetic state, the density of states just below EF is smaller than in the paramagnetic phase. Valence band spectra in the paramagnetic state show strong polarization dependence. Furthermore, the change across the first-order ferrimagnetic transition in the valence band electronic structures is observed. These experimental data are well described by the band structure calculation incorporated with the polarization dependent cross-sections of orbitals. Abstract: type:Journal Article, Size dependencies of the peak effect and irreversibility field in superconducting Sm-123 powder specimens were investigated. The peak effect was found to disappear in the two-dimensional pinning regime in which powder size is smaller than pinning correlation length. This shows that the peak effect does not originate directly from elementary pinning mechanisms, but from a cooperative phenomenon of flux lines, as proposed by the pinning-induced disorder transition model. In addition, when powder size is smaller than virtual pinning correlation length in the ideal creep-free case, irreversibility field decreases with powder size. This supports the hypothesis that longitudinal flux bundle size is given by this length, as predicted by flux creep theory. Abstract: type:Journal Article, When an AC magnetic field of a suitable magnitude is applied locally to a wide surface of a superconducting film, a third harmonic voltage is induced in a pick-up coil. This measurement is used for an evaluation of the critical current density of the film. Mawatari et al. analyzed the relationship between the third harmonic voltage amplitude (V3) and the driving current amplitude for the field (I0) by using the critical state model and a simple assumption that the magnetic field is locally parallel to a flat surface. In this study, this relationship is numerically analyzed by finite element method (FEM) for a condition similar to the experiment by Mawatari et al. This result is compared with the above theoretical and experimental results. Some deviations from theory are found. Abstract: lc-strain characteristic of YBCO coated conductor was measured using a Walters spring (WASP). In this technique, additional bending and thermal strains induced to the YBCO layer should be considered. In order to produce different initial bending strain to the YBCO layer, the conductor was wound around the springs with different diameters and in the different bending directions. The clear evidence was obtained that -strain curves using a WASP strongly depend on the initial bending strain state. However, when -strain curves were normalized by a maximum value, all of the curves even including the data measured by uniaxial strain method for a short sample fall on to the same curve. Strain analysis based on the rule of mixture probes that the shift along the strain axis for each -strain curve can be explained by the bending and thermal strain during soldering. This result suggests that combined strain of bending and tensile strains can be regarded as simple summation in the present YBCO coated conductor.

Abstract: lc-strain characteristic of YBCO coated conductor was measured using a Walters spring (WASP). In this technique, additional bending and thermal strains induced to the YBCO layer should be considered. In order to produce different initial bending strain to the YBCO layer, the conductor was wound around the springs with different diameters and in the different bending directions. The clear evidence was obtained that -strain curves using a WASP strongly depend on the initial bending strain state. However, when -strain curves were normalized by a maximum value, all of the curves even including the data measured by uniaxial strain method for a short sample fall on to the same curve. Strain analysis based on the rule of mixture probes that the shift along the strain axis for each -strain curve can be explained by the bending and thermal strain during soldering. This result suggests that combined strain of bending and tensile strains can be regarded as simple summation in the present YBCO coated conductor.

Abstract: NY-ESO-1, a member of the cancer-testis family of antigens, is expressed in a subset of a broad range of different human tumor types. Patients with advanced NY-ESO-1-expressing tumors frequently develop humoral immunity to NY-ESO-1, and three HLA A2-restricted peptides were defined previously as targets for cytotoxic CD8(+) T cells in a melanoma patient with NY-ESO-1 antibody. The objectives of the present study were (i) to develop enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) and tetramer assays to measure CD8(+) T cell responses to NY-ESO-1, (ii) to determine the frequency of CD8(+) T cell responses to NY-ESO-1 in a series of HLA-A2 patients with NY-ESO-1 expressing tumors, (iii) to determine the relation between CD8(+) T cell and humoral immune responses to NY-ESO-1, and (iv) to compare results of NY-ESO-1 ELISPOT assays performed independently in two laboratories with T cells from the same patients. NY-ESO-1 ELISPOT and tetramer assays with excellent sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility have been developed and found to correlate with cytotoxicity assays. CD8(+) T cell responses to HLA-A2-restricted NY-ESO-1 peptides were detected in 10 of 11 patients with NY-ESO-1 antibody, but not in patients lacking antibody or in patients with NY-ESO-1-negative tumors. The results of ELISPOT assays were concordant in the two laboratories, providing the basis for standardized monitoring of T cell responses in patients receiving NY-ESO-1 vaccines.

Abstract: A growing number of human tumor antigens have been described that can be recognized by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) in a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I-restricted fashion. Serological screening of cDNA expression libraries, SEREX, has recently been shown to provide another route for defining immunogenic human tumor antigens. The detection of antibody responses against known CTL-defined tumor antigens, e.g., MAGE-1 and tyrosinase, raised the question whether antibody and CTL responses against a defined tumor antigen can occur simultaneously in a single patient. In this paper, we report on a melanoma patient with a high-titer antibody response against the "cancer-testis" antigen NY-ESO-1. Concurrently, a strong MHC class I-restricted CTL reactivity against the autologous NY-ESO-1-positive tumor cell line was found. A stable CTL line (NW38-IVS-1) was established from this patient that reacted with autologous melanoma cells and with allogeneic human histocompatibility leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A2(-), NY-ESO-1-positive, but not NY-ESO-1-negative, melanoma cells. Screening of NY-ESO-1 transfectants with NW38-IVS-1 revealed NY-ESO-1 as the relevant CTL target presented by HLA-A2. Computer calculation identified 26 peptides with HLA-A2-binding motifs encoded by NY-ESO-1. Of these, three peptides were efficiently recognized by NW38-IVS-1. Thus, we show that antigen-specific humoral and cellular immune responses against human tumor antigens may occur simultaneously. In addition, our analysis provides a general strategy for identifying the CTL-recognizing peptides of tumor antigens initially defined by autologous antibody.
