Synthesizing high dynamic range (HDR) images from multiple low-dynamic range (LDR) exposures in dynamic scenes is challenging. There are two major problems caused by the large motions of foreground objects. One is the severe misalignment among the LDR images. The other is the missing content due to the over-/under-saturated regions caused by the moving objects, which may not be easily compensated for by the multiple LDR exposures. Thus, it requires the HDR generation model to be able to properly fuse the LDR images and restore the missing details without introducing artifacts. To address these two problems, we propose in this paper a novel GAN-based model, HDR-GAN, for synthesizing HDR images from multi-exposed LDR images. To our best knowledge, this work is the first GAN-based approach for fusing multi-exposed LDR images for HDR reconstruction. By incorporating adversarial learning, our method is able to produce faithful information in the regions with missing content. In addition, we also propose a novel generator network, with a reference-based residual merging block for aligning large object motions in the feature domain, and a deep HDR supervision scheme for eliminating artifacts of the reconstructed HDR images. Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves state-of-the-art reconstruction performance over the prior HDR methods on diverse scenes.

A heat wave with temperatures over 35°C and sunny stagnant meteorological conditions occurred in Shanghai from 27 July to 5 August 2015, leading to a sustained episode of high ozone lasting 12 days. We have conducted a detailed source apportionment of surface ozone, by precursor source category and region, using a photochemical transport model. In this episode, a southwesterly wind prevailed over the Yangtze River Delta, and therefore precursors from the local Shanghai region and the region immediately to the south of Shanghai are the two major contributors (in total 90%) to ozone in Shanghai. The source apportionment reveals that local industrial sources and energy/biogenic sources in neighbouring regions are the principal causes for the high levels of ozone. By examining the contributions from individual physical and chemical processes, we show that ozone concentrations start to rise rapidly in the morning because chemical production dominates as the solar radiation increases, and while there is little removal by deposition when ozone remains low. In general, chemical production, horizontal advection and vertical diffusion contribute to increase ozone concentration during daytime, and deposition and vertical advection reduce ozone concentrations.

Previous studies have shown that urbanization in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region in southern China can have significant effect on the land-sea breeze circulation in the region. In this study, some characteristics of this urban heat island (UHI) effect are further investigated by some idealized numerical experiments. This study focuses on three aspects of the UHI effects. Firstly, the interaction of UHI effects associated with different city clusters in the PRD region. Secondly, the UHI effect and the strength of the background wind field. Thirdly, seasonal variation of the UHI effect. Experiment results suggest that the interaction of the UHI effects due to the closely distributed city clusters in the PRD region is not significant, while the UHI effect in the region may depend on the strength of the background wind. The seasonal-mean UHI effect in the region shows a significant variation associated with the change of seasons.
