Contemporary cities are dealing with practices and processes that mark not only a radical physical transformation, but also a profound anthropological, cultural, and political transformation of living. In this sense, we are witnessing some transformations in government and political life that are strictly connected to the affirmation of the neoliberal model of development. On the other hand, we are witnessing a progressive development not only of active citizenship, but of forms of mutualism and self-organization. In some cases, they are dictated by the need to respond to social needs and aspirations for a better quality of urban life, which are not answered by the appointed subjects. In others, they are the expression of the effort to build alternative models of development and collective life, becoming nowadays the place where to produce political culture. It is interesting to notice the recent evolution both towards structured and supra-local cooperative and mutualism networks, and towards collaborative forms of self-management in some neighborhoods. Interesting possibilities for innovation also seem to emerge for politics, including collaborative forms that envisage the constitution of substantive informal democracy, a sort of self-produced territorial democracy. The contribution intends to discuss the complex of these problems, referring above all to experiences in the Roman context and critically evaluating the possible effective conditions for the development of forms of self-produced territorial democracy.

El espacio público juega un papel fundamental en la ciudad. La forma en que se ha pensado este lugar, cómo se ha planificado y cómo es utilizado por los habitantes influye directamente en la forma que toma la ciudad. Este artículo, se presenta como un avance a la investigación desarrollada en el marco de la Maestría en Planeación Urbana y Regional de la Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. En ella se plantea que las grandes transformaciones que han sufrido el espacio público en los últimos años, como la segregación, privatización y choque en formas de apropiación han dado cuenta de la necesidad de replantear la forma en que se piensan y se planean los espacios públicos. Tomando como caso de estudio la ciudad de Bogotá, se argumenta que es necesario entender con mayor profundidad las prácticas urbanas, que se desarrollan en ellos y complejizar la forma en que se estudian, permitiendo una mirada plural y multifuncionalidad a ese gran espacio articulador en la ciudad., Public space has an important role within the city. The way it has thought, planned and used by the inhabitants has a direct influence in the city from. This article presents the progress that has this as an academic research as a student from the master program on Urban and Regional Planning at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. In this article, starts by recognizing that cities have suffered significant transformations, that has led to problems such as segregation, privatization and fights in forms of uses. For such reason, it is acknowledged the necessity of rethink how public space in planned in cities. Taking Bogota as a case study, it is argued that there is a need to understand urban social practices in a deepest way, where planning should take a plural and multifunctional look when is talked about public spaces in cities.

Global mobilities of knowledge and financial capital considerably influence the pathways of Indian urbanism, suggesting an economic-growth-driven agenda to future-proof cities in a sustainable development effort. Such logics also dominate planning practices in Chennai, where technical-infrastructural interventions determine the development of the city. Consultants and lobby groups are able to draw on knowledge mobilities in linking urban development to global best practices. Simultaneously, a variety of emerging actors suggest different trajectories of living urban sustainability. These actors work on a smaller scale and seek a transformative moment from below. While at a first glance the two narratives of urban sustainability seem to be antithetical, we argue for a reading that acknowledges their intimate intermingling. Thus this paper centres on the points of confluence as well as on the disruptions between these two narratives, specifically investigating the political ecology of sustainable Indian urbanism.

Usually this identity is described by the image that people have of the place, of the resident population habits, social resentações and produced interventions. The city is more than a jumble of individual men and social conveniences, it is something more than a mere constellation of institutions and administrative provisions. The city is a state of mind, a body of customs, traditions, feelings and attitudes inherent organized the vital processes of the people who compose it. The city is a product of nature, especially of human nature. Urban space is a form of unconscious rationalization (individual and collective), disguised in the visibility of their urban layouts, buildings and monuments, which can be mistaken, suppressing critical reflection and self-criticism of inhabitants or social groups. Through the presentation of two case studies this paper aims to engage the theoretical debate on the persistence of public space in the contemporary city, and focuses the attention on the way people practice these spaces and on the policies which are regulating their uses. Starting from the description of different ways in which some urban spaces in Rome (Italy) are used by two different communities of people, one mainly composed by immigrants and the other by young city users, and the diverse ways in which their different practices are seen and tolerated, the aim of this paper is to reflect on public spaces. Observing how city users practice public spaces, and analysing the way in which these practices are considered, are particularly exciting perspectives that can offer an interesting vision of the spatial and social reality of the city and of hegemonic relations which govern it.

Through the presentation of two case studies this paper aims to engage the theoretical debate on the persistence of public space in the contemporary city, and focuses the attention on the way people practice these spaces and on the policies which are regulating their uses. Starting from the description of different ways in which some urban spaces in Rome (Italy) are used by two different communities of people, one mainly composed by immigrants and the other by young city users, and the diverse ways in which their different practices are seen and tolerated, the aim of this paper is to reflect on public spaces.
