1. Sociodemographic profiles and career motivations of Australian dental students

Abstract: PURPOSE: Prior studies explored factors influencing dental study choice, but shifts from BDSc to DDS degrees in some countries impact demographics and motivations, potentially affecting the dental workforce. The aim of this study was to establish Australian DDS and BOH students' sociodemographics and career motivations. METHODS: Questionnaires conducted in mid-2019 assessed sociodemographic profiles and career motivations. Statistical analysis utilized descriptive statistics and Fisher's exact test. RESULTS: The overall response rate was 71.3%. DDS students had an average age of 25.2 years, while BOH students averaged 21.5 years. Most BOH (80.7%) and DDS students (52.0%) were female. They were mainly single, local, Australian citizens from metropolitan areas. Self-motivation ranked highest, particularly for DDS students (P < 0.05). Significant motivators included healthcare occupation, helping others, interesting career, and flexible hours (P < 0.05). DDS students were more motivated by flexible hours and independence (P < 0.05), while females emphasized a healthcare profession (P = 0.003). International students were motivated by being their own boss (P = 0.003), and private school graduates valued lifestyle within the profession (P = 0.049). CONCLUSION: Despite sociodemographic changes, the main motivations for studying dentistry remain consistent. DDS students prioritized lifestyle factors such as time and remuneration over BOH students.

2. Super Lorentzian effects on the wings of self-broadened HCl and of HCl diluted in Ar

Abstract: Super-Lorentzian effects in the troughs between HCl lines were observed long time ago [Varanasi et al., J Quant Rad Transfer, Vol. 12, pag. 857, 1972]. The observed spectral shape was then modelled by using an empirical law and there was no explanation about the mechanisms underlying these super-Lorentzian effects. In this work, new spectra of pure HCl and HCl diluted in Ar have been measured using a high resolution Fourier Transform spectrometer, for pressure from 6 to 10 bars. Spectra of pure HCl and HCl in Ar have been also computed using classical molecular dynamics simulations (CMDS). First comparisons between CMDS-calculated spectra and measured ones, for regions at the troughs between HCl lines, show that the observed super-Lorentzian behaviour is correctly reproduced by the calculations. These results thus open the paths for the determination of the origin of these super-Lorentzian effects.

3. A Novel Use of the “3-Day Rule”: Post-discharge Methadone Dosing in the Emergency Department

Abstract: Introduction: Methadone is a medically necessary and lifesaving medication for many patients with opioid use disorder. To adequately address these patients’ needs, methadone should be offered in the hospital, but barriers exist that limit its continuation upon discharge. The code of federal regulations allows for methadone dosing as an inpatient as well as outpatient dispensing forup to three days to facilitate linkage to treatment. As a quality initiative, we created a new workﬂow for discharging patients on methadone to return to the emergency department (ED) for uninterrupted dosing. Methods: Our addiction medicine team changed hospital methadone policy to better allow hospitalization as a window of opportunity to start methadone. This necessitated the creation of a warm-handoff process to link patients to methadone clinics if that linkage could not happen immediately on discharge. Thus, our team created the “ED Bridge” process, which uses the “3-day rule” to dispense methadone from the ED post hospital discharge. We then followed every patient we directed through this workﬂow as an observational cohort for outcomes and trends. Results: Of the patients for whom ED bridge dosing was planned, 40.4% completed all bridge dosing and an additional 17.3% received at least one but not all bridge doses. Established methadone patients made up 38.1% of successful linkages, and 61.9% were patients who were newly started on methadone in the hospital. Conclusion: Improving methadone as a treatment option remains an ongoing issue for policymakers and advocates. Our ED bridge workﬂow allows us to expand access and continuation of methadone now using existing laws and regulations, and to better use hospitals as a point of entry into methadone treatment.

5. A Proposed Model for Breakthrough Curves of Methylene Blue Adsorption on Biochar

Abstract: Dye pollutants, mainly discharged from the textile industry, have caused severe risks to human health and the ecosystem because of their toxicity, non-biodegradability, and carcinogenicity. This study investigated the use of commercial biochar derived from melaleuca wood as an adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) using a packed-bed column. The selected biochar was characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The experiments were performed to determine breakthrough curves (BTCs) with varying pH (3–9), inflow rate (5–20 mL min–1), bed height (16–65 cm), and initial MB concentration (0.75–9 mg L–1). The biochar (particle size of 1–2 mm) exhibited a low adsorption capacity for MB (~21 mg kg–1), resulting in a short breakthrough time. The Thomas, Bohart-Adams, Yoon-Nelson, and Bed Depth Service Time models were quite suitable for describing the experimental BTCs, with R2-values ranging from 0.92 to 0.98. The obtained BTCs were not in the typical S-shape, which characterizes diffusion-controlled adsorption. Therefore, a serial logistic-exponential model, which accounts for both the mass transfer and interaction contributions, was proposed. The experimental data effectively fit this proposed model, as indicated by high R2-values (>0.998). The dominant influence of mass transfer compared to interaction in controlling the adsorption rate of MB was highlighted. 6. Validation of the newly proposed Brighton Collaboration case definition for vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis.

Abstract: Vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) is a newly recognized syndrome mediated by anti-platelet factor 4 antibodies induced by Covid-19 adenovirus-vectored vaccines including ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and Ad26.COV2.S. This study validated a proposed Brighton Collaboration case definition for VITT. A data collection form was developed and used to capture the variations in VITT criteria and assess their level of diagnostic certainty from adjudicated positive VITT case datasheets in Germany (n = 71), UK (n = 220), Australia (n = 203), and Taiwan (n = 56). We observed high prevalence of each component of the proposed VITT definition in positive cases (84%-100%), except for the occurrence of thrombosis or thromboembolism criterion in only 34% of VITT cases in Taiwan. The sensitivity of this proposed definition was 100% for Germany and UK, 92% for Australia, and 89% for Taiwan cases. These findings support the validity of this case definition for VITT.

Abstract: This is a revision of the online November 2021 Brighton thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) case definition and a new Brighton Collaboration case definition for vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT). These case definitions are intended for use in clinical trials and post-licensure pharmacovigilance activities to facilitate safety data comparability across multiple settings. They are not intended to guide clinical management. The case definitions were developed by a group of subject matter and Brighton Collaboration process experts as part of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI)-funded Safety Platform for Evaluation of vACcines (SPEAC). The case definitions, each with defined levels of diagnostic certainty, are based on relevant published evidence and expert consensus and are accompanied by specific guidelines for TTS and VITT data collection and analysis. The document underwent peer review by a reference group of vaccine safety stakeholders and haematology experts to ensure case definition useability, applicability and scientific integrity.

Abstract: ABSTRACTIn statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data‐generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence‐generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty—nonstandard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for more reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer‐review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants.

Abstract: Super-Lorentzian effects in the troughs between HCl lines were observed long time ago [Varanasi et al., J Quant Rad Transfer, Vol. 12, pag. 857, 1972]. The observed spectral shape was then modelled by using an empirical law and there was no explanation about the mechanisms underlying these super-Lorentzian effects. In this work, new spectra of pure HCl and HCl diluted in Ar have been measured using a high resolution Fourier Transform spectrometer, for pressure from 6 to 10 bars. Spectra of pure HCl and HCl in Ar have been also computed using classical molecular dynamics simulations (CMDS). First comparisons between CMDS-calculated spectra and measured ones, for regions at the troughs between HCl lines, show that the observed super-Lorentzian behaviour is correctly reproduced by the calculations. These results thus open the paths for the determination of the origin of these super-Lorentzian effects.

12. Uncertain benefits of using remotely sensed evapotranspiration for streamflow estimation - insights from a randomized, large-sample experiment

Abstract: Remotely sensed evapotranspiration (ETRS) shows promise for enhancing hydrological models, especially in regions lacking in situ streamflow observations. However, model calibration studies showed conflicting results regarding the ability of ETRS products to improve streamflow simulation. Rather than relying on model calibration, here we produce the first randomized experiment that explores the full streamflow–ET skill distribution, and also the first probabilistic assessment of the value of different global ETRS products for streamflow simulation. Using 280,000 randomized SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model runs across seven catchments and four ETRS products, we show that the relationship between ET and streamflow skills is complex, and simultaneous improvement in both skills is only possible in a limited range. Parameter sensitivity analysis indicates that the most sensitive parameters can have opposite contributions to ET and streamflow skills, leading to skill trade-offs. Conditional probability assessment reveals that models with good ET skills are likely to produce good streamflow skills, but not vice versa. We suggest that randomized experiments such as ours should be performed before model calibration to determine whether using ETRS is worthwhile, and to help in interpreting the calibration results.

Abstract: Purpose: Build predictive radiomic models for early relapse and BRCA mutation based on a multicentric database of high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) and validate them in a test set coming from different institutions. Methods: Preoperative CTs of patients with HGSOC treated at four referral centers were retrospectively acquired and manually segmented. Hand-crafted features and deep radiomics features were extracted respectively by dedicated software (MODDICOM) and a dedicated convolutional neural network (CNN). Features were selected with and without prior harmonization (ComBat harmonization), and models were built using different machine learning algorithms, including clinical variables. Results: We included 218 patients. Radiomic models showed low performance in predicting both BRCA mutation (AUC in test set between 0.46 and 0.59) and 1-year relapse (AUC in test set between 0.46 and 0.56); deep learning models demonstrated similar results (AUC in the test of 0.48 for BRCA and 0.50 for relapse). The inclusion of clinical variables improved the performance of the radiomic models to predict BRCA mutation (AUC in the test set of 0.74). Conclusions: In our multicentric dataset, representative of a real-life clinical scenario, we could not find a good radiomic predicting model for PFS and BRCA mutational status, with both traditional radiomics and deep learning, but the combination of clinical and radiomic models improved model performance for the prediction of BRCA mutation. These findings highlight the need for standardization through the whole radiomic pipelines and robust multicentric external validations of results.

Abstract: This paper presents a nonlinear simulation method for composite framing systems constituted from concrete‐filled steel tubular columns (CFST) and composite beam systems. A force‐based fibre beam‐column element in OpenSees was adopted. This element was capable of accurately capturing the local buckling of steel and the confining effect of concrete using the modified stress‐strain relationships of the steel and concrete fibres. A source code for the connection element was also developed in OpenSees to capture the semi‐rigid behaviour of the beam‐to‐column connections of the composite buildings. Through the verification with numerous experiments, the model has shown its capability of accurately simulating composite frames with simplicity and less computational cost. An extensive parametric study was conducted to examine the effect of the bracing systems and the rigidity of the connections on the behaviour and instability of the whole composite buildings.

Abstract: ZRANB1 (human Trabid) missense mutations have been identified in children diagnosed with a range of congenital disorders including reduced brain size, but how Trabid regulates neurodevelopment is not understood. We have characterized these patient mutations in cells and mice to identify a key role for Trabid in the regulation of neurite growth. One of the patient mutations flanked the catalytic cysteine of Trabid and its deubiquitylating (DUB) activity was abrogated. The second variant retained DUB activity, but failed to bind STRIPAK, a large multiprotein assembly implicated in cytoskeleton organization and neural development. Zranb1 knock-in mice harboring either of these patient mutations exhibited reduced neuronal and glial cell densities in the brain and a motor deficit consistent with fewer dopaminergic neurons and projections. Abstract: Trabid/ZRANB1missense mutations have been identified in children diagnosed with a range of congenital disorders including reduced brain size, but how Trabid regulates neurodevelopment is not understood. We have characterised these patient mutations in cells and mice to identify a key role for Trabid in the regulation of neurite growth. One of the patient mutations flanked the catalytic cysteine of Trabid and its deubiquitylating (DUB) activity was abrogated. The second variant retained DUB activity, but failed to bind STRIPAK, a large multiprotein assembly implicated in cytoskeleton organisation and neural development.Trabid/ZRANB1knock-in mice harbouring either of these patient mutations exhibited reduced neuronal and glial cell densities in the brain and a motor deficit consistent with fewer dopaminergic neurons and projections. Standard errors measure the uncertainty in sample estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty: non-standard errors. To study them, we let 164 teams test six hypotheses on the same sample. We find that non-standard errors are sizeable, on par with standard errors. Their size (i) co-varies only weakly with team merits, reproducibility, or peer rating, (ii) declines significantly after peer-feedback, and (iii) is underestimated by participants.

21. Longitudinal spatial mapping of lipid metabolites reveals pre-symptomatic changes in the hippocampi of Huntington?s disease transgenic mice

Abstract: In Huntington's disease (HD), a key pathological feature includes the development of inclusion-bodies of fragments of the mutant huntingtin protein in the neurons of the striatum and hippocampus. To examine the molecular changes associated with inclusion-body formation, we applied MALDI-mass spectrometry imaging and deuterium pulse labelling to determine lipid levels and synthesis rates in the hippocampus of a transgenic mouse model of HD (R6/1 line). The R6/1 HD mice lacked inclusions in the hippocampus at 6 weeks of age (pre-symptomatic), whereas inclusions were pervasive by 16 weeks of age (symptomatic). Hippocampal subfields (CA1, CA3 and DG), which formed the highest density of inclusion formation in the mouse brain showed a reduction in the relative abundance of neuron-enriched lipids that have roles in neurotransmission, synaptic plasticity, neurogenesis, and ER-stress protection. Lipids involved in the adaptive response to ER stress (phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidic acid, and ganglioside classes) displayed increased rates of synthesis in HD mice relative to WT mice at all the ages examined, including prior to the formation of the inclusion bodies. Our findings, therefore, support a role for ER stress occurring pre-symptomatically and potentially contributing to pathological mechanisms underlying HD.

22. Considering equity and cost-effectiveness in assessing a parenting intervention to promote early childhood development in rural Vietnam

Abstract: Considering equity in early childhood development (ECD) is important to ensure healthy development for every child. Equity-informative cost-effectiveness analysis can further guide decision makers to maximize outcomes with limited resources while promoting equity. This cost-effectiveness study aimed to examine the equity impacts of a multicomponent ECD intervention in rural Vietnam. We estimated the cost-effectiveness of the intervention with a 30-month time horizon from the service provider and household perspectives with equity considerations. Data were from a cluster-randomized controlled trial comparing the intervention with the local standard of care. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) per child cognitive development score gained were estimated by household wealth quintile and maternal education level, adjusted for cluster effects and baseline characteristics such as maternal parity and age. A 3% discount rate was applied to costs, and non-parametric cluster bootstrapping was used to examine uncertainty around ICERs. Children in the intervention had higher cognitive development scores than those in the control arm across all subgroups. Based on intervention recurrent cost, the ICER per cognitive development score gained was lower in children from the poorest quintile (-US$6) compared to those from the richest quintile (US$16). Similarly, the ICER per cognitive development score gained was lower in children whose mothers had the lowest education level (-US$0.02) than those with mothers who had the highest education level (US$7). Even though our findings should be interpreted with caution due to the insufficient study power, the findings suggest that the intervention could promote equity while improving child cognitive development with greater cost-effectiveness in disadvantaged groups.

23. The role of fingernail selenium in the association between arsenic, lead and mercury and child development in rural Vietnam: a cross-sectional analysis

Abstract: As, Pb and Hg are common environmental contaminants in low- and middle-income countries. We investigated the association between child toxicant exposure and growth and development and determined if this association was mitigated by Se concentration. Toxicant concentrations in fingernail samples, anthropometry and Bayley's Scales of Infant Development, 3rd edition domains were assessed in 36-month-old children whose mothers had been part of a randomised controlled trial in rural Vietnam. Multivariable regression analyses were performed to estimate the effect of toxicant exposure on clinical outcomes with adjustments for potential confounders and interaction with fingernail Se concentration. We analysed 658 children who had data for at least one physical or developmental outcome, and at least one toxicant measurement, and each of the covariates. Fingernail As concentration was negatively associated with language (estimate per 10 % increase in As: -0·19, 95 % CI: (-0·32, -0·05)). Pb was negatively associated with cognition (estimate per 10 % increase in Pb: -0·08 (-0·15, -0·02)), language (estimate per 10 % increase in Pb: -0·18 (-0·28, -0·10)) and motor skills (estimate per 10 % increase in Pb: -0·12 (-0·24, 0·00)). Hg was negatively associated with cognition (estimate per 10 % increase in Hg: -0·48, (-0·72, -0·23)) and language (estimate per 10 % increase in Hg -0·51, (-0·88, -0·13)) when Se concentration was set at zero in the model. As Se concentration increased, the negative associations between Hg and both cognition and language scores were attenuated. There was no association between toxicant concentration and growth. As, Pb and Hg concentrations in fingernails of 3-year-old children were associated with lower child development scores. The negative association between Hg and neurological development was reduced in magnitude with increasing Se concentration. 24. Structured, multicomponent, community-based programme for women?s health and infant health and development in rural Vietnam: a parallel-group cluster randomised controlled trial

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Interventions to improve early childhood development have previously addressed only one or a few risk factors. Learning Clubs is a structured, facilitated, multicomponent programme designed to address eight potentially modifiable risk factors, and offered from mid-pregnancy to 12 months post partum; we aimed to establish whether this programme could improve the cognitive development of children at 2 years of age. METHODS: For this parallel-group cluster-randomised controlled trial, 84 of 116 communes (the clustering unit) in HaNam Province in rural Vietnam were randomly selected and randomly assigned to receive the Learning Clubs intervention (n=42) or usual care (n=42). Women aged at least 18 years who were pregnant (gestational age <20 weeks) were eligible for inclusion. Data sources were standardised, and study-specific questionnaires assessing risks and outcomes were completed in interviews in mid-pregnancy (baseline), late pregnancy (after 32 weeks of gestation), at 6-12 months post partum, and at the end of the study period when children were 2 years of age. Mixed-effects models were used to estimate trial effects, adjusting for clustering. The primary outcome was the cognitive development of children at 2 years of age, assessed by the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development Third Edition (Bayley-III) cognitive score. This trial is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ACTRN12617000442303). FINDINGS: Between April 28, 2018, and May 30, 2018, 1380 women were screened and 1245 were randomly assigned (669 to the intervention group and 576 to the control group). Data collection was completed on Jan 17, 2021. Abstract: BACKGROUND: Economic evaluations are critical to ensure effective resource use to implement and scale up child development interventions. This study aimed to estimate the cost-effectiveness of a multicomponent early childhood development intervention in rural Viet Nam. METHODS: We did a cost-effectiveness study alongside a cluster-randomised trial with a 30-month time horizon. The study included 669 mothers from 42 communes in the intervention group, and 576 mothers from 42 communes in the control group. Mothers in the intervention group attended Learning Clubs sessions from mid-pregnancy to 12 months after delivery. The primary outcomes were child cognitive, language, motor, and social-emotional development at age 2 years. In this analysis, we estimated the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) of the intervention compared with the usual standard of care from the service provider and household perspectives. We used non-parametric bootstrapping to examine uncertainty, and applied a 3% discount rate. FINDINGS: The total intervention cost was US$169 898 (start-up cost $133 692 and recurrent cost $36 206). The recurrent cost per child was $58 (1 341 741 Vietnamese dong). Considering the recurrent cost alone, the base-case ICER was $14 and mean ICER of 1000 bootstrap samples was $14 (95% CI -0·48 to 30) per cognitive development score gained with a 3% discount rate to costs. The ICER per language and motor development score gained was $22 and $20, respectively, with a 3% discount rate to costs. INTERPRETATION: The intervention was cost-effective: the ICER per child cognitive development score gained was 0·5% of Viet Nam's gross domestic product per capita, alongside other benefits in language and motor development. Abstract: The Snowmass report on rare processes and precision measurements recommended Mu2e-II and a next generation muon facility at Fermilab (Advanced Muon Facility) as priorities for the frontier. The Workshop on a future muon program at FNAL was held in March 2023 to discuss design studies for Mu2e-II, organizing efforts for the next generation muon facility, and identify synergies with other efforts (e.g., muon collider). Topics included high-power targetry, status of R&D for Mu2e-II, development of compressor rings, FFA and concepts for muon experiments (conversion, decays, muonium and other opportunities) at AMF. Abstract: BackgroundThe glioblastoma's bad prognosis is primarily due to intra-tumor heterogeneity, demonstrated from several studies that collected molecular biology, cytogenetic data and more recently radiomic features for a better prognostic stratification. The GLIFA project (GLIoblastoma Feature Analysis) is a multicentric project planned to investigate the role of radiomic analysis in GB management, to verify if radiomic features in the tissue around the resection cavity may guide the radiation target volume delineation. Materials and methodsWe retrospectively analyze from three centers radiomic features extracted from 90 patients with total or near total resection, who completed the standard adjuvant treatment and for whom we had post-operative images available for features extraction. The Manual segmentation was performed on post gadolinium T1w MRI sequence by 2 radiation oncologists and reviewed by a neuroradiologist, both with at least 10 years of experience. The Regions of interest (ROI) considered for the analysis were: the surgical cavity +/- post-surgical residual mass (CTV_cavity); the CTV a margin of 1.5 cm added to CTV_cavity and the volume resulting from subtracting the CTV_cavity from the CTV was defined as CTV_Ring. Radiomic analysis and modeling were conducted in RStudio. Z-score normalization was applied to each radiomic feature. A radiomic model was generated using features extracted from the Ring to perform a binary classification and predict the PFS at 6 months. A 3-fold cross-validation repeated five times was implemented for internal validation of the model. ResultsTwo-hundred and seventy ROIs were contoured. The proposed radiomic model was given by the best fitting logistic regression model, and included the following 3 features: F_cm_merged.contrast, F_cm_merged.info.corr.2, F_rlm_merged.rlnu. Abstract: This paper addresses the electromagnetic inverse scattering problem of determining the location and shape of anisotropic objects from near-field data. We investigate both cases involving the Helmholtz equation and Maxwell's equations for this inverse problem. Our study focuses on developing efficient imaging functionals that enable a fast and stable recovery of the anisotropic object. The implementation of the imaging functionals is simple and avoids the need to solve an ill-posed problem. The resolution analysis of the imaging functionals is conducted using the Green representation formula. Furthermore, we establish stability estimates for these imaging functionals when noise is present in the data. We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty: non-standard errors. To study them, we let 164 teams test six hypotheses on the same sample. We find that non-standard errors are sizeable, on par with standard errors. Their size (i) co-varies only weakly with team merits, reproducibility, or peer rating, (ii) declines significantly after peer-feedback, and (iii) is underestimated by participants.

Abstract: The Atmospheric Chemistry Suite (ACS) onboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) monitors the Martian atmosphere through different spectral intervals in the infrared light. We present a retrieval algorithm tailored to the analysis of spectra acquired in nadir geometry by TIRVIM, the thermal infrared channel of ACS. Our algorithm simultaneously retrieves vertical profile of atmospheric temperature up to 50 km, surface temperature, and integrated optical depth of dust and water ice clouds. The specificity of the TIRVIM dataset lies in its capacity to resolve the diurnal cycle over a 54 sol period. However, it is uncertain to what extent can the desired atmospheric quantities be accurately estimated at different times of day. Here we first present an Observing System Simulation Experiment (OSSE). We produce synthetic observations at various latitudes, seasons and local times and run our retrieval algorithm on these synthetic data, to evaluate its robustness. Different sources of biases are documented, in particular regarding aerosol retrievals. Atmospheric temperature retrievals are found robust even when dust and/or water ice cloud opacities are not well estimated in our OSSE. We then apply our algorithm to TIRVIM observations in April-May, 2018 and perform a cross-validation of retrieved atmospheric temperature and dust integrated opacity by comparisons with thousands of co-located Mars Climate Sounder (MCS) retrievals. Most differences between TIRVIM and MCS atmospheric temperatures can be attributed to differences in vertical sensitivity. Daytime dust opacities agree well with each other, while biases are found in nighttime dust opacity retrieved from TIRVIM at this season., Comment: 51 pages, 29 figures. 31. Isolated distal DVT in trauma: A study of the management of isolated distal deep vein thrombosis acquired as an inpatient in trauma patients.

Abstract: Background: Isolated distal deep vein thromboses (IDDVT) are common complications of trauma inpatient admission, however their management is controversial. We aimed to analyse outcomes in patients admitted to a level three tertiary referral centre who received therapeutic anticoagulation compared to those that did not. We hypothesised that therapeutic anticoagulation would be safe and effective in trauma inpatients who develop IDDVT. Method(s): We performed a review of the electronic case notes of all patients with venous thromboembolism listed as a complication whilst admitted as an inpatient under the trauma unit at a tertiary institution over a 4-year period, from October 2014 to October 2018. Demographic data was collected, as well as data regarding management, major bleeding and progression of thrombosis to proximal DVT or PE. Result(s): 91 IDDVT in trauma inpatients were identified. 33 patients received therapeutic anticoagulation within seven days of their diagnosis. No major bleeding was observed in this group, while one episode of thrombus progression was observed. 58 patients were not given therapeutic anticoagulation within seven days of IDDVT diagnosis. There were seven episodes of thrombus progression in this group on median day 5 post diagnosis, while no major bleeding was observed. Conclusion(s): Only approximately 1/3rd of patients with IDDVT after trauma received therapeutic anticoagulation, and in these selected cases it appears safe. Those who did not receive therapeutic anticoagulation had a significant rate of thrombosis extension into the proximal system and pulmonary embolus. Further studies on correctly identifying who can be safely anticoagulated are required and for those who cannot be, these data show more aggressive surveillance and prophylaxis needs to be considered.Copyright © 2022

Abstract: The HITRAN database is a compilation of molecular spectroscopic parameters. It was established in the early 1970s and is used by various computer codes to predict and simulate the transmission and emission of light in gaseous media (with an emphasis on terrestrial and planetary atmospheres). The HITRAN compilation is composed of five major components: the line-by-line spectroscopic parameters required for high-resolution radiative-transfer codes, experimental infrared absorption cross-sections (for molecules where it is not yet feasible for representation in a line-by-line form), collision-induced absorption data, aerosol indices of refraction, and general tables (including partition sums) that apply globally to the data. This paper describes the contents of the 2020 quadrennial edition of HITRAN. The HITRAN2020 edition takes advantage of recent experimental and theoretical data that were meticulously validated, in particular, against laboratory and atmospheric spectra. The new edition replaces the previous HITRAN edition of 2016 (including its updates during the intervening years). All five components of HITRAN have undergone major updates. In particular, the extent of the updates in the HITRAN2020 edition range from updating a few lines of specific molecules to complete replacements of the lists, and also the introduction of additional isotopologues and new (to HITRAN) molecules: SO, CH3F, GeH4, CS2, CH3I and NF3. Many new vibrational bands were added, extending the spectral coverage and completeness of the line lists. Also, the accuracy of the parameters for major atmospheric absorbers has been increased substantially, often featuring sub-percent uncertainties. Broadening parameters associated with the ambient pressure of water vapor were introduced to HITRAN for the first time and are now available for several molecules. 33. Immune thrombocytopenia following immunisation with Vaxzevria ChadOx1-S (AstraZeneca) vaccine, Victoria, Australia.

Abstract: Emerging evidence suggest a possible association between immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and some formulations of COVID-19 vaccine. We conducted a retrospective case series of ITP following vaccination with Vaxzevria ChadOx1-S (AstraZeneca) and mRNA Comirnaty BNT162b2 COVID-19 (Pfizer-BioNTech) vaccines and compare the incidence to expected background rates for Victoria during the first six months of the Australian COVID-19 vaccination roll-out in 2021. Cases were identified by reports to the Victorian state vaccine safety service, SAEFVIC, of individuals aged 18 years or older presenting with thrombocytopenia following COVID-19 vaccination without evidence of thrombosis. Twenty-one confirmed or probable cases of ITP were identified following receipt of AstraZeneca (n = 17) or Pfizer-BioNTech (n = 4) vaccines. This translates to an observed incidence of 8 per million doses for AstraZeneca vaccine, twice the expected background rate of 4.1 per million. The observed rate for Pfizer-BioNTech was consistent with the expected background rate. The median time to onset for the cases post AstraZeneca vaccination was 10 days (range 1-78) and median platelet nadir 5 x 109/L (range 0-67 x 109/L). Hospital presentations or admissions for management of symptoms such as bleeding occurred in 18 (86%) of the cases. The majority of cases (n = 11) required intervention with at least 2 therapy modalities. In conclusion, we observed a substantially higher than expected rate of ITP following AstraZeneca vaccination. ITP is the second haematological adverse event, distinct from that of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), observed following AstraZeneca vaccination.Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

34. The Clinicopathologic Challenge of Nonneoplastic Vulvar Acanthosis

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to evaluate clinicopathologic features of cases demonstrating an acanthotic tissue reaction not clearly consistent with psoriasis, lichen simplex chronicus, mycosis, or condyloma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective pathologic case series of biopsies reported as "benign acanthotic lesion" and "acanthotic tissue reaction" that lacked a clear diagnosis on expert review. Cases with nuclear atypia were excluded. Clinical and histopathologic data were collected, immunohistochemistry for p16 and p53 were obtained, and molecular testing for 28 common anogenital human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes was undertaken. RESULTS: There were 17 cases with a median age of 47 years. Unilaterality and medial location were clinical reasons for diagnostic difficulty. Histopathologic uncertainty often related to lack of papillary dermal fibrosis to support lichen simplex chronicus or psoriasiform lesions without parakeratosis, subcorneal pustules, and/or mycotic elements. Firm pathologic diagnoses were not possible, but 3 groups emerged: favoring chronic dermatitis, favoring psoriasis, and unusual morphologies. p16 results were negative or nonblock positive while p53 was normal or basal overexpressed. Human papillomavirus testing was negative in 12, low positive for HPV 16 in 1, unassessable in 3, and not requested in 1. CONCLUSIONS: There is a group of acanthotic tissue reactions that cannot be classified with standard histopathologic assessment. Further clinicopathologic research into unilateral acanthotic lesions may provide insight into separation of psoriasis and mycosis when organisms are absent. Once nuclear atypia is excluded, immunohistochemistry for p16 and p53 and HPV molecular testing do not assist in diagnostic identification.

35. System reliability-based design of steel-concrete composite frames with CFST columns and composite beams

Abstract: This paper presents an effective reliability analysis procedure and proposes the system resistance factors for the system design of steel-concrete composite frames that comprise of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns and composite beams. Advanced analysis is employed to predict the ultimate resistance of frames using fibre beam-column elements in OpenSees. The obtained predictions of the load-carrying capacity of frames compare well with experimental results with the mean value of the test-to-prediction ratio around 1.027 and the coefficient of variation (CoV) of 8.4%. Both Monte Carlo (MC) and subset simulations are used in the reliability analysis. The uncertainties of model error, geometric and material properties, and external loads are included to predict the system reliability index. Five different frame configurations are considered. The results of the reliability analysis show that the system resistance factors for both US and AS codes are quite similar. In the case of gravity load, the system resistance factor is from 0.78 to 0.90, whilst this value for the case of combined wind and gravity load is from 0.8 to 0.95. The resistance factors suggested herein become valuable reference information for the system design of composite frames.

Standard errors measure the uncertainty in sample estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty: non-standard errors. To study them, we let 164 teams test six hypotheses on the same sample. We find that non-standard errors are sizeable, on par with standard errors. Their size (i) co-varies only weakly with team merits, reproducibility, or peer rating, (ii) declines significantly after peer-feedback, and (iii) is underestimated by participants.

Abstract: Xylosandrus crassiusculus is an invasive Asian-origin ambrosia beetle that has spread across many regions of the world, including first records in Queensland, Australia, in 2011 and New Zealand in 2019. To determine the seasonal flight activity of this species in Australia, panel traps using quercivorol + ethanol lures were placed at three study sites in New South Wales. This trapping yielded 1173 beetles, consisting of 21 species from three tribes (Xyleborini, Cryphalini and Hylurgini). Xylosandrus crassiusculus contributed almost half the total number of beetles captured over a period of 12 months, mainly driven by catches at one site. The trapping showed a seasonal peak of X. crassiusculus in late March and early April. The genetic relationships between the Australian and New Zealand specimens of X. crassiusculus were compared with other populations across the world. Phylogenetic analysis of the Australian X. crassiusculus populations showed that the beetle population in Queensland was similar to those found in New Zealand and countries in the Americas (Clade I), while the New South Wales population was closely related to Southeast Asian populations (Clade II). This divergence of genetic populations in Australia infers independent introductions of X. crassiusculus into Australia.

Abstract: The HITRAN database is a compilation of molecular spectroscopic parameters. It was established in the early 1970s and is used by various computer codes to predict and simulate the transmission and emission of light in gaseous media (with an emphasis on terrestrial and planetary atmospheres). The HITRAN compilation is composed of five major components: the line-by-line spectroscopic parameters required for high-resolution radiative-transfer codes, experimental infrared absorption cross-sections (for molecules where it is not yet feasible for representation in a line-by-line form), collision-induced absorption data, aerosol indices of refraction, and general tables (including partition sums) that apply globally to the data. This paper describes the contents of the 2020 quadrennial edition of HITRAN. The HITRAN2020 edition takes advantage of recent experimental and theoretical data that were meticulously validated, in particular, against laboratory and atmospheric spectra. The new edition replaces the previous HITRAN edition of 2016 (including its updates during the intervening years). All five components of HITRAN have undergone major updates. In particular, the extent of the updates in the HITRAN2020 edition range from updating a few lines of specific molecules to complete replacements of the lists, and also the introduction of additional isotopologues and new (to HITRAN) molecules: SO, CH3F, GeH4, CS2, CH3I and NF3. Many new vibrational bands were added, extending the spectral coverage and completeness of the line lists. Also, the accuracy of the parameters for major atmospheric absorbers has been increased substantially, often featuring sub-percent uncertainties. Broadening parameters associated with the ambient pressure of water vapor were introduced to HITRAN for the first time and are now available for several molecules. 39. Novel Antidepressant-Like Properties of the Iron Chelator Deferiprone in a Mouse Model of Depression

Abstract: Depressed individuals who carry the short allele for the serotonin-transporter-linked promotor region of the gene are more vulnerable to stress and have reduced response to first-line antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Since depression severity has been reported to correlate with brain iron levels, the present study aimed to characterise the potential antidepressant properties of the iron chelator deferiprone. Using the serotonin transporter knock-out (5-HTT KO) mouse model, we assessed the behavioural effects of acute deferiprone on the Porsolt swim test (PST) and novelty-suppressed feeding test (NSFT). Brain and blood iron levels were also measured following acute deferiprone. To determine the relevant brain regions activated by deferiprone, we then measured c-Fos expression and applied network-based analyses. We found that deferiprone reduced immobility time in the PST in 5-HTT KO mice and reduced latency to feed in the NSFT in both genotypes, suggesting potential antidepressant-like effects. There was no effect on brain or blood iron levels following deferiprone treatment, potentially indicating an acute iron-independent mechanism. Deferiprone reversed the increase in c-Fos expression induced by swim stress in 5-HTT KO mice in the lateral amygdala. Functional network analyses suggest that hub regions of activity in mice treated with deferiprone include the caudate putamen and prefrontal cortex. The PST-induced increase in network modularity in wild-type mice was not observed in 5-HTT KO mice. Altogether, our data show that the antidepressant-like effects of deferiprone could be acting via an iron-independent mechanism and that these therapeutic effects are underpinned by changes in neuronal activity in the lateral amygdala.

Abstract: Recent integration of LiDAR into smartphones opens up a whole new world of possibilities for 3D indoor/outdoor mapping. Although these new systems offer an unprecedent opportunity for the democratization in the use of scanning technology, data quality is lower than data captured from high-end LiDAR sensors. This paper is focused on discussing the capability of recent Apple smart devices for applications related with 3D mapping of indoor and outdoor environments. Indoor scenes are evaluated from a reconstruction perspective, and three geometric aspects (local precision, global correctness, and surface coverage) are considered using data captured in two adjacent rooms. Outdoor environments are analysed from a mobility point of view, and elements defining the physical accessibility in building entrances are considered for evaluation.

42. Exploring the economics of public health intervention scale-up: a case study of the Supporting Healthy Image, Nutrition and Exercise (SHINE) cluster randomised controlled trial.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The costs and benefits of an intervention within the intervention testing phase may differ from those experienced when that intervention is implemented and delivered at scale. Yet limited empirical work has been undertaken to explore how economic constructs related to implementation and scale-up might have an impact on intervention cost. The aim of this study was to explore the potential economic impacts of implementation and scale-up on a healthy weight and body image intervention tested in a Type II translational research trial. METHODS: The Supporting Healthy Image, Nutrition and Exercise (SHINE) study is a cluster randomised controlled trial, aiming to deliver universal education about healthy nutrition, physical activity and wellbeing behaviours to adolescents in Australian secondary schools. Data on the cost of the intervention were collected alongside the trial using standard micro-costing techniques. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with key intervention stakeholders to explore the potential economic impacts of implementation and scale-up. Thematic content analysis was undertaken by two authors. RESULTS: Fifteen intervention group schools participated in the 8-week online intervention targeting students in 2019 (99 Grade 7 classes; 2,240 students). Booster sessions were delivered during one class session in Grades 8 and 9, in 2020 and 2021 respectively. Time costs of intervention delivery and co-ordination comprised the majority (90%) of intervention cost as per the trial, along with costs associated with travel for intervention training and equipment. Themes related to the benefit of the intervention emerged from interviews with six intervention stakeholders, including the potential for economies of scale afforded by online delivery. Abstract: The HITRAN database is a compilation of molecular spectroscopic parameters. It was established in the early 1970s and is used by various computer codes to predict and simulate the transmission and emission of light in gaseous media (with an emphasis on terrestrial and planetary atmospheres). The HITRAN compilation is composed of five major components: the line-by-line spectroscopic parameters required for high-resolution radiative-transfer codes, experimental infrared absorption cross-sections (for molecules where it is not yet feasible for representation in a line-by-line form), collision-induced absorption data, aerosol indices of refraction, and general tables (including partition sums) that apply globally to the data. This paper describes the contents of the 2020 quadrennial edition of HITRAN. The HITRAN2020 edition takes advantage of recent experimental and theoretical data that were meticulously validated, in particular, against laboratory and atmospheric spectra. The new edition replaces the previous HITRAN edition of 2016 (including its updates during the intervening years). All five components of HITRAN have undergone major updates. In particular, the extent of the updates in the HITRAN2020 edition range from updating a few lines of specific molecules to complete replacements of the lists, and also the introduction of additional isotopologues and new (to HITRAN) molecules: SO, CH3F, GeH4, CS2, CH3I and NF3. Many new vibrational bands were added, extending the spectral coverage and completeness of the line lists. Also, the accuracy of the parameters for major atmospheric absorbers has been increased substantially, often featuring sub-percent uncertainties. Broadening parameters associated with the ambient pressure of water vapor were introduced to HITRAN for the first time and are now available for several molecules. Abstract: Safety and efficacy of vaccines against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has been demonstrated in clinical trials and next by their real world use through the course of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, very rare adverse events have been detected post-authorization in certain parts of the world. This meeting report summarizes an EMA workshop’s discussion on the epidemiology, clinical presentation and biology of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome after adenovirus vector COVID-19 vaccination. General agreement was reached by international regulators, scientists and developers on the steps needed to fill the gaps in the characterization of this new syndrome. In particular, actions should be taken to improve the post-vaccination surveillance activities in low and middle income countries and investigate potential genetic predisposition factors.

45. Phosphoproteomic dysregulation in Huntington's disease mice is rescued by environmental enrichment

Abstract: Huntington's disease is a fatal autosomal-dominant neurodegenerative disorder, characterized by neuronal cell dysfunction and loss, primarily in the striatum, cortex and hippocampus, causing motor, cognitive and psychiatric impairments. Unfortunately, no treatments are yet available to modify the progression of the disease. Recent evidence from Huntington's disease mouse models suggests that protein phosphorylation (catalysed by kinases and hydrolysed by phosphatases) might be dysregulated, making this major post-translational modification a potential area of interest to find novel therapeutic targets. Furthermore, environmental enrichment, used to model an active lifestyle in preclinical models, has been shown to alleviate Huntington's disease-related motor and cognitive symptoms. However, the molecular mechanisms leading to these therapeutic effects are still largely unknown. In this study, we applied a phosphoproteomics approach combined with proteomic analyses on brain samples from pre-motor symptomatic R6/1 Huntington's disease male mice and their wild-type littermates, after being housed either in environmental enrichment conditions, or in standard housing conditions from 4 to 8 weeks of age (n = 6 per group). We hypothesized that protein phosphorylation dysregulations occur prior to motor onset in this mouse model, in two highly affected brain regions, the striatum and hippocampus. Furthermore, we hypothesized that these phosphoproteome alterations are rescued by environmental enrichment. When comparing 8-week-old Huntington's disease mice and wild-type mice in standard housing conditions, our analysis revealed 229 differentially phosphorylated peptides in the striatum, compared with only 15 differentially phosphorylated peptides in the hippocampus (statistical thresholds fold discovery rate 0.05, fold change 1.5). Abstract: Xylosandrus crassiusculus is an invasive Asian-origin ambrosia beetle that has spread across many regions of the world, including first records in Queensland, Australia, in 2011 and New Zealand in 2019. To determine the seasonal flight activity of this species in Australia, panel traps using quercivorol + ethanol lures were placed at three study sites in New South Wales. This trapping yielded 1173 beetles, consisting of 21 species from three tribes (Xyleborini, Cryphalini and Hylurgini). Xylosandrus crassiusculus contributed almost half the total number of beetles captured over a period of 12 months, mainly driven by catches at one site. The trapping showed a seasonal peak of X. crassiusculus in late March and early April. The genetic relationships between the Australian and New Zealand specimens of X. crassiusculus were compared with other populations across the world. Phylogenetic analysis of the Australian X. crassiusculus populations showed that the beetle population in Queensland was similar to those found in New Zealand and countries in the Americas (Clade I), while the New South Wales population was closely related to Southeast Asian populations (Clade II). This divergence of genetic populations in Australia infers independent introductions of X. crassiusculus into Australia.

Abstract: Innate immune defense against deep tissue infection by Staphylococcus aureus is orchestrated by fibroblasts that become antimicrobial when triggered to differentiate into adipocytes. However, the role of this process in noninfectious human diseases is unknown. To investigate the potential role of adipogenesis by dermal fibroblasts in acne, a disorder triggered by Cutibacterium acnes, single-cell RNA sequencing was performed on human acne lesions and mouse skin challenged by C. acnes. A transcriptome consistent with adipogenesis was observed within specific fibroblast subsets from human acne and mouse skin lesions infected with C. acnes. Perifollicular dermal preadipocytes in human acne and mouse skin lesions showed colocalization of PREF1, an early marker of adipogenesis, and cathelicidin (Camp), an antimicrobial peptide. This capacity of C. acnes to specifically trigger production of cathelicidin in preadipocytes was dependent on TLR2. Treatment of wild-type mice with retinoic acid (RA) suppressed the capacity of C. acnes to form acne-like lesions, inhibited adipogenesis, and enhanced cathelicidin expression in preadipocytes, but lesions were unresponsive in Camp-/- mice, despite the anti-adipogenic action of RA. Analysis of inflamed skin of acne patients after retinoid treatment also showed enhanced induction of cathelicidin, a previously unknown beneficial effect of retinoids in difficult-to-treat acne. Overall, these data provide evidence that adipogenic fibroblasts are a critical component of the pathogenesis of acne and represent a potential target for therapy.
