1. Using semantic drift on social media for event detection, differentiation and segmentation

Abstract: With observable paradigm shift in computer science from predictive modeling to the generative one, it became important to maximise exploration of the pathways towards useful data production. With currently dominating statistical and compositional data augmentation strategies, opportunities also emerged for more application-driven routes. The main value of such approaches lies in their capacity to offer insights into context or event specific data productions, currently overlooked by more topologically neutral machine learning approaches. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to provide empirical evidence for useful data generation by dynamic event-specific lexical semantic resources. Various Web 2.0 applications due to their popularity have been accumulating large amounts of semantically rich metadata, which became readily available and easily exploitable. Tags, usually consisting of a single word, are one type of such data. Tag uses can vary largely across systems and platforms; Also known under the term folksonomy, tags are usually non-hierarchical and open-ended, thus re-flecting users' unique perspectives regarding various contexts, or resources. This platform-enabled liberty of expression, however, has led to situations of frequent semantic ambiguity due to spelling mistakes, morphological variations, polysemy, multilingualism or inaccurate tag-to-resource associations. As a consequence, tag spaces are often regarded as inconsistent, noisy and hardly reliable data sources. Recent surge of interest amongst distributional semanticists in long- and short-term fluctuations of word meanings on social media has suggested routes for successful temporal sense disambiguation, thus inviting discussions around useful real-world applications for such emerging data resources. One of such applications - event analytics from the crowd behaviour perspective - is gaining an increasing attention from researchers and practitioners, especially in the fields of operations and situational management. Pursuing pragmatic aims of event detection, differen- tiation and segmentation, this application domain is represented predominantly by repetitive catastrophic events (such as natural hazards), during which directly or indirectly exposed populations tend to share their situational experiences on social media. This thesis consists of three main parts, each corresponding to specific problem in event analytics: (i) detection, (ii) differentiation and (iii) segmentation. In the first part I used the concept of ontological semantic proximity on the words candidates for semantic drift in order to highlight the dynamics of their semantic oscillations within event-specific category (i.e., flooding). In my second experiment I followed on these initial findings and performed an analysis verifying whether semantically unstable lexical material can augment our knowledge about main sub-types of floods, such as `slow' (e.g., groundwater and pluvial floods) and `fast' (surface water and riverine floods) ones. In my third experiment I employed combined lexico-visual modalities of the crowdsourced material to reconstruct changing perceptions of flood events in order to understand how event severity can or cannot determine situationally resilient behaviours.

2. Polydisperse chaperone proteins and the mechanisms by which they inhibit aggregation

Abstract: The small heat-shock proteins (sHSPs) are ATP-independent molecular chaperones, found in all kingdoms of life. In humans their malfunction is associated with neurodegenerative disease, cataracts, myopathies and cancer. Their molecular mechanism is contentious as sHSPs are challenging experimental targets: they typically exist as large, polydisperse and exchanging oligomers. This heterogeneity is com- pounded by that of aggregating substrates. Here I investigate the structure, dynamics and function of a major human sHSP, αB-crystallin (αBC), using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and native mass spectrometry (MS). Following the introduction, Chapters 2 and 3 focus on structure and dynamics of αBC. In Chapter 2, I elucidate an allosteric communication network between two interfaces of the core α-crystallin domain within the oligomers. In Chapter 3, I show that the connectivity of oligomer vertices is consistent with polyhedral architectures, and present size measurements of individual αBC stoichiometries within the polydisperse ensemble. Chapters 4-7 link these insights to the chaperone function of αBC. Chapter 4 presents a new methodology to derive kinetic mechanisms of aggregation, using the model protein α-lactalbumin (αLac). I show that αLac aggregation proceeds along two pathways via an unstable dimeric nucleus. Chapter 5 derives a kinetic mechanism for the chaperone action of αBC on αLac. Remarkably, αBC disassembles the aggregation nuclei, and is in kinetic competition with αLac in large aggregates. In Chapter 6, I characterise the size and shape of these large αBC-αLac complexes. Chapter 7 identifies αBC residues affected by αLac, showing that the substrate engages a subset of the interactions regulating quaternary dynamics of αBC. Thus I have exploited the complementarity of NMR and native MS to obtain insight into function of αBC, by studying its structure and dynamics from atomic- resolution to quaternary level. The results expand the arsenal of mechanisms by which molecular chaperones maintain cellular proteostasis.

3. Study toward a More Reliable Approach to Elucidate the Lignin Structure–Property–Performance Correlation

Abstract: The correlation between lignin structure, its properties, and performance is crucial for lignin engineering in high-value products. Currently, a widespread approach is to compare lignins which differ by more than one parameter (i.e., Kraft vs organosolv vs lignosulfonates) in various applications by attributing the changes in their properties/performance specifically to a certain variable (i.e., phenolic −OH groups). Herein, we suggest a novel approach to overcome this issue by changing only one variable at a time while keeping all others constant before investigating the lignin properties/performance. Indulin AT (Ind-AT), a softwood Kraft lignin, was chosen as the model substrate for this study. Selective (analytical) lignin modifications were used to mask/convert specific functionalities, such as aliphatic (AliphOH) including benzylic −OH (BenzOH) and phenolic −OH (PhOH) groups, carboxyl groups (−COOH) and carbonyl groups (CO) via methylation, acetylation, and reduction. The selectivity and completeness of the reactions were verified by comprehensive NMR analysis (31P and 2D HSQC) of the modified preparations together with state-of-the-art molar mass (MM) characterization. Methylene blue (MB) adsorption, antioxidant activity, and glass transition temperature (Tg) were used to demonstrate and compare the properties/performance of the obtained modified lignins. We found that the contribution of different functionalities in the adsorption of MB follows the trend BenzOH > −COOH > AlipOH > PhOH. Noteworthy, benzylic −OH contributes ca. 3 and 2.3 times more than phenolic and aliphatic −OH, respectively. Abstract: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are very stable and ubiquitously distributed in terrestrial and aquatic environments, and treatment and remediation techniques for the removal of PFAS are urgently needed. In this study, mesoporous silica matrix SBA-15 grafted with alkyl amino groups was used to remove perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) from aqueous solutions. The amino groups were grafted onto SBA-15 by the condensation of alkyl amino silanes. The synthesized adsorbents were studied by SEM, TEM, IR, low-temperature nitrogen sorption, and XRD. The solid-state and liquid 19F NMR spectroscopy, EDX, and LC-MS/MS results showed high adsorption efficiency and rapid reaction kinetics. In freshly prepared solutions and on the surface of the sorbents, the presence of PFOA micelles was observed. Furthermore, the introduction of amine-containing groups into the structure of the sorbent allows the sorption of up to 649 mg/g of PFOA from solutions. Results showed that the protonated surface amino groups and PFOA interacted electrostatically. The obtained results open perspectives for producing adsorbents for facile extraction of PFAS.

Abstract: The gastrointestinal system is a hollow organ affected by fibrostenotic diseases that cause volumetric compromise of the lumen via smooth muscle hypertrophy and fibrosis. Many of the driving mechanisms remain unclear. Yes-associated protein-1 (YAP) is a critical mechanosensory transcriptional regulator that mediates cell hypertrophy in response to elevated extracellular rigidity. In the type 2 inflammatory disorder, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), phospholamban (PLN) can induce smooth muscle cell hypertrophy. We used EoE as a disease model for understanding a mechanistic pathway in which PLN and YAP interact in response to rigid extracellular substrate to induce smooth muscle cell hypertrophy. PLN-induced YAP nuclear sequestration in a feed-forward loop caused increased cell size in response to a rigid substrate. This mechanism of rigidity sensing may have previously unappreciated clinical implications for PLN-expressing hollow systems such as the esophagus and heart.

6. Golden-Domed (Choral) Synagogue in Hlukhiv, Destroyed During World War II

Abstract: Based on documentary sources, the article provides detailed information about the history and fate of the Golden-Domed (choral) Synagogue in Hlukhiv (Sumy region, Ukraine), which was destroyed during World War II. At the same time, for the first time, all available information about the external appearance, internal premises and interiors of the synagogue was collected and presented. By comparing visual sources (drawings and plans of the synagogue, as well as photographic documents depicting this building at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries), an attempt was made to describe the appearance and internal equipment of the synagogue. The documents used in the article and the complete plans for the lost Golden-Domed Synagogue are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time.

Abstract: Aims .Over the past decades, libraries of stellar spectra have been used in a large variety of science cases, including as sources of reference spectra for a given object or a given spectral type. Despite the existence of large libraries and the increasing number of projects of large-scale spectral surveys, there is to date only one very high-resolution spectral library offering spectra from a few hundred objects from the southern hemisphere (UVES-POP). We aim to extend the sample, offering a finer coverage of effective temperatures and surface gravity with a uniform collection of spectra obtained in the northern hemisphere. Methods .Between 2010 and 2020, we acquired several thousand echelle spectra of bright stars with the Mercator-HERMES spectrograph located in the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma, whose pipeline offers high-quality data reduction products. We have also developed methods to correct for the instrumental response in order to approach the true shape of the spectral continuum. Additionally, we have devised a normalisation process to provide a homogeneous normalisation of the full spectral range for most of the objects. Results .We present a new spectral library consisting of 3256 spectra covering 2043 stars. It combines high signal-to-noise and high spectral resolution over the entire range of effective temperatures and luminosity classes. 8. Extensive evaluation of a new LC-MS/MS method to quantify monofluoroacetate toxin in the kidney

Abstract: Monofluoroacetate (MFA) is a highly lethal toxin which causes death by inhibiting cellular ATP production. The heart and brain are the primary target organs. Acute death is attributed to cardiac fibrillation and/or convulsions. Although it occurs naturally in some plants, a major source of animal intoxication is access to sodium monofluoroacetate (NaMFA) pesticide which continues to be a concern in the US and around the world despite restricted use in some countries including the US. There are also concerns about misuse of this pesticide for malicious poisoning. Currently, a tissue-based diagnostic method for NaMFA intoxication in animals is lacking. There is a critical need by the veterinary diagnostic community for a simple, sensitive, and reliable tissue-based diagnostic test to confirm NaMFA poisoning in animals. We have developed and extensively evaluated a sensitive novel LC-MS/MS method suitable for this purpose. The limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) are 1.7 ng/g and 5.0 ng/g, respectively. The accuracy and precision met or exceeded expectations. The method performance was verified using incurred kidney obtained from animal diagnostic cases. This novel kidney-based method is now available for clinical use and can help with diagnostic purposes, including detecting potential issues related to animal foods.

9. Did the organization of primary care practices during the COVID-19 pandemic influence quality and safety? an international survey

Abstract: Background: Changes in demographics with an older population, the illness panorama with increasing prevalence of non-communicable diseases, and the shift from hospital care to home-based care place demand on primary health care, which requires multiprofessional collaboration and team-based organization of work. The COVID-19 pandemic affected health care in various ways, such as heightened infection control measures, changing work practices, and increased workload. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association between primary care practices’ organization, and quality and safety changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design: Data were collected from 38 countries in a large online survey, the PRICOV-19 study. For this paper, the participating practices were categorized as “Only GPs”, comprising practices with solely general practitioners (GPs) and/or GP trainees, without any other health care professionals (n = 1,544), and “Multiprofessional,” comprising practices with at least one GP or GP trainee and one or more other health professionals (n = 3,936). Results: Both categories of practices improved in infection control routines when compared before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. A larger proportion of the multiprofessional practices changed their routines to protect vulnerable patients. Telephone triage was used in more “Multiprofessional” practices, whereas “Only GPs” were more likely to perform video consultations as an alternative to physical visits. Both types of practices reported that the time to review new guidelines and scientific literature decreased during the pandemic. However, both had more meetings to discuss directives than before the pandemic. Conclusions: Multiprofessional teams were keener to introduce changes to the care organization to protect vulnerable patients. Abstract: The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. An additional cosmic-ray population with higher source density and softer spectra, presumably also extragalactic and dominating the cosmic-ray flux at EeV energies, is also required to reproduce the overall spectrum and composition results for all energies down to 0.6~EeV.

Abstract: We describe an X-ray source detection method entirely based on the maximum likelihood analysis, in application to observations with the ART-XC telescope onboard the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma observatory. The method optimally combines the data taken at different conditions, a situation commonly found in scanning surveys or mosaic observations with a telescope with a significant off-axis PSF distortion. The method can be naturally extended to include additional information from the X-ray photon energies, detector grades, etc. The likelihood-based source detection naturally results in a stable and uniform definition of detection thresholds under different observing conditions (PSF, background level). This greatly simplifies the statistical calibration of the survey needed to, e.g., obtain the $\log N - \log S$ distribution of detected sources or their luminosity function. Abstract: We present a catalog of sources detected by the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope onboard the SRG space observatory during the observations of the Galactic plane region near a longitude $l\simeq20$ deg (L20 field) in October 2019. The L20 field was observed four times in the scanning mode, which provided a uniform coverage of the sky region with a total area of $\simeq24$ sq. deg with a median sensitivity of $8\times10^{-13}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ (at 50% detection completeness) in the 4$-$12 keV. As a result, we have detected 29 X-ray sources at a statistically significant level, 11 of which have not been detected previously by other X-ray observatories. Preliminary estimates show that four of them can presumably be extragalactic in nature. We also show that the source SRGA J183220.1$-$103508 (CXOGSG J183220.8$-$103510), is most likely a galaxy cluster containing a bright radio galaxy at redshift $z\simeq0.121$., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables; In this version we have added some notes and a reference to Nevalainen et al. 13. Automated eccentricity measurement from raw eclipsing binary light curves with intrinsic variability

Abstract: abridged. Eclipsing binary systems provide the opportunity to measure the fundamental parameters of their component stars in a stellar-model-independent way. This makes them ideal candidates for testing and calibrating theories of stellar structure and (tidal) evolution. Even without spectroscopic follow-up there is often enough information in their photometric time series to warrant analysis, especially if there is an added value present in the form of intrinsic variability, such as pulsations. Our goal is to implement and validate a framework for the homogeneous analysis of large numbers of eclipsing binary light curves, such as the numerous high-duty-cycle observations from space missions like TESS. The aim of this framework is to be quick and simple to run and to limit the user's time investment when obtaining, amongst other parameters, orbital eccentricities. We developed a new and fully automated methodology for the analysis of eclipsing binary light curves with or without additional intrinsic variability. Our method includes a fast iterative pre-whitening procedure. Orbital and stellar parameters are measured under the assumption of spherical stars of uniform brightness. We tested our methodology in two settings: a set of synthetic light curves with known input and the catalogue of Kepler eclipsing binaries. The synthetic tests show that we can reliably recover the frequencies and amplitudes of the sinusoids included in the signal as well as the input binary parameters. Recovery of the tangential component of eccentricity is the most accurate and precise. Kepler results confirm a robust determination of orbital periods, with 80.5% of periods matching the catalogued ones. Abstract: We test the predictions of hadronic interaction models regarding the depth of maximum of air-shower profiles, $X_{max}$, and ground-particle signals in water-Cherenkov detectors at 1000 m from the shower core, $S(1000)$, using the data from the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The test consists in fitting the measured two-dimensional ($S(1000)$, $X_{max}$) distributions using templates for simulated air showers produced with hadronic interaction models EPOS-LHC, QGSJet II-04, Sibyll 2.3d and leaving the scales of predicted $X_{max}$ and the signals from hadronic component at ground as free fit parameters. The method relies on the assumption that the mass composition remains the same at all zenith angles, while the longitudinal shower development and attenuation of ground signal depend on the mass composition in a correlated way. The analysis was applied to 2239 events detected by both the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory with energies between $10^{18.5}$ to $10^{19.0}$ eV and zenith angles below $60^\circ$. We found, that within the assumptions of the method, the best description of the data is achieved if the predictions of the hadronic interaction models are shifted to deeper $X_{max}$ values and larger hadronic signals at all zenith angles. Given the magnitude of the shifts and the data sample size, the statistical significance of the improvement of data description using the modifications considered in the paper is larger than $5\sigma$ even for any linear combination of experimental systematic uncertainties., Comment: Accepted in Phys. Abstract: The purpose of the research is disclosing the administrative and legal status of public administration subjects regarding countering terrorism. Main content. It has been established that a fairly clear and logical structure of state bodies regarding organization and coordination of the fight against terrorism has been created in Ukraine. The system of counter-terrorism entities is a set of specific, legally defined entities that interact with the goal of preventing, detecting, stopping, and minimizing consequences of terrorist activities. Methodology: The following methods were used in the research: analysis of biographical sources, synthesis, deduction, comparative analysis, meta-analysis, etc. Conclusions. It has been established that the President of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine are the key actors in countering terrorism in Ukraine in the system of higher authorities. The defining areas of activity of the President of Ukraine in the sphere of countering terrorism are the activities aimed at the regulatory and legal support of countering terrorism in Ukraine creation, liquidation, reorganization and management of the relevant counter-terrorism subjects., El objetivo de la investigación es dar a conocer la situación administrativa y jurídica de los sujetos de la administración pública en materia de lucha contra el terrorismo. Contenido principal. Se ha comprobado que en Ucrania se ha creado una estructura bastante clara y lógica de órganos estatales en materia de organización y coordinación de la lucha contra el terrorismo. El sistema de entidades antiterroristas es un conjunto de entidades específicas, legalmente definidas, que interactúan con el objetivo de prevenir, detectar, detener y minimizar las consecuencias de las actividades terroristas. Abstract: Decentralized blockchain platforms support the secure exchange of assets among users without relying on trusted third parties. These exchanges are programmed with smart contracts, computer programs directly executed by blockchain nodes. Multiple smart contract languages are available nowadays to developers, each with its own distinctive features, strengths, and weaknesses. In this paper, we examine the smart contract languages used in six major blockchain platforms: Ethereum, Solana, Cardano, Algorand, Aptos, and Tezos. Starting with a high-level overview of their design choices, we provide a comprehensive assessment that focuses on programming style, security, code readability, and usability, drawing on an original benchmark that encompasses a common set of use cases across all the smart contract languages under examination.

19. The real deal : professional klezmer musicians on a London world music scene

Abstract: The Real Deal is a term often used by musicians to describe people they perceive to be more authentic than them. Over the past seven or eight years, I have performed music from Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Turkey and beyond under the umbrella of World Music in one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world: London. As I negotiated my way onto this scene and played with some of the finest musicians, I became increasingly aware of those I felt to be the Real Deal. I also began to feel that, in certain circumstances, I may also have appeared to be the Real Deal to others. Many of the musicians on this scene had begun their foray into these diverse styles with klezmer and it is this style that I explore most with relation to the Real Deal. As klezmer is a Jewish music style not played, or even enjoyed, by all Jews, this makes notions of the Real Deal much more ambiguous. This thesis examines the movable perception that is the Real Deal and the complex interplay that results between musicians. Through discussions with twenty musicians with whom I have played regularly, I discussed the Real Deal and how it affects the way we work. Although half of the musicians self-identified as being Jewish and the other half did not, this became only one factor in the complex negotiations involved in professional music making. The often amusing anecdotes of mistaken identity that we shared raised fundamental questions about our stage performances. I examine the complex issues surrounding klezmer as a style of music and the unique scene that has developed from the American revival in London. I consider the role of the Jewish Music Institute and how it serves the Jewish community and professional musicians in London and beyond. Finally, I assess how my discussions with musicians and the Jewish Music Institute have not only changed and shaped this evolving scene, but forced me to question my own attitudes and practice.

Abstract: Biomineralization is a process of formation of biominerals widespread among living organisms. This phenomenon occurs in the central nervous system in normal and pathological conditions. Typically, this can manifest age-related changes, and the prevalence of biominerals increases with age. At the same time, it can be a sign of pathology-tumour growth, dystrophy, metabolic disorders, etc. This work aims to study the morphological features of the dura mater with signs of biomineralization. In this work, we examined 30 samples of the dura mater with signs of biomineralization (group I) and 30 samples without these signs (group II) obtained during autopsies in the pathology department of the Sumy Regional Clinical Hospital. For the morphological charact erist ics of the dura mat er, we used hi stologi cal, hi stochemi cal and immunohistochemical methods, as well as scanning electron microscopy. Statistical processing of the results of the immunohistochemical study was carried out in the GraphPad Prism 8.0 statistical package using parametric and non-parametric research methods. To divide the samples into groups, we relied on the histological method-staining with hematoxylin-eosin. Histochemical methods (alizarin red staining, von Koss method) confirmed the presence of calcium compounds in the studied group. Van Gieson staining visualized the collagen fibres of the dura mater, and the PAS reaction di d not reveal the presence of gl ycosaminogl ycans in the mineral deposit s. Immunohistochemical examination of the dura mater with antibodies against osteopontin revealed a significant difference between the study and control groups (p<0.001), confirming the critical role of osteopontin in the biomineralization process in this tissue. With the help of scanning electron microscopy, it was found that biominerals in the dura mater are represented by tens to hundreds of formations of various shapes (rounded, oval and irregular), varying from tens of nanometers to 50 micrometre

23. Metastatic ovarian cancer : bibliographic analysis

Abstract: Introduction: Ovarian cancer is an oncogynecological disease with high mortality. High mortality caused by this pathology is associated with diagnosis at the III–IV stage of the disease. This stage of the disease is characterized by metastasis and reflected in the 5-year survival rate, decreasing to 30.2 %. At the same time, when diagnosed at the I–II stage, this indicator is 92.6%. The aim of the work is bibliometric analysis and generalization of data from scientific sources on the study of ovarian cancer metastasis. Materials and methods: Information was searched on electronic resources of the Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases using the keywords "ovarian cancer" and "metastases." An online platform for monitoring and analyzing scientific sources was used for bibliometric analysis. We used several VOSviewer bibliometric network visualization system tools and SciVal (Scopus) modern citation requirements. Results: It has been established that metastasis of ovarian cancer can occur in several ways and depends on the conditions of the tumor microenvironment. The influence of E-cadherin, MMP-2, and transglutaminase-2 on metastasis processes was evaluated. Also, the role of cytokines in the invasiveness of the tumor process and metastasis was established. The results of bibliometric analysis of scientific sources showed that over the past 20 years, the number of publications on ovarian cancer metastasis has increased significantly, and the most widely given topic is studied in the USA and China. Conclusions: Metastasis of ovarian cancer can occur in several ways and depends on the conditions of the tumor microenvironment. It was found that among the analyzed 496 publications, the most relevant directions are molecular-biological and signaling pathways, which are described in many ways in scientific sources on ovarian cancer metastasis. Abstract: For the first time to the best of our knowledge, CeAlO3 nanocrystals with perovskite structure are synthesized by pulsed laser ablation technique. The morphological and optical properties of the obtained CeAlO3 nanocrystals are investigated. This work opens new prospects for the application of laser ablation methods for the generation of perovskite nanocrystals and development of novel nanocomposite structures, which can be applied for the fabrication of perovskite solar cells, scintillation detectors, catalysts, etc.

25. Rebuilding a place to call home: Sharing knowledge for the recovery of Ukraine

Abstract: On Wednesday 15 February 2023, PBL organised 'Ukraine’s housing recovery forum — rebuilding a place to call home’. The aim of the event was ‘sharing knowledge for action’. In this report, the authors draw lessons from that event and elaborate them further. Why talking about recovery while the war is ongoing? Recovery requires long-term planning and structural investments. In other words, proper and systematic preparation of policy in the public interest, no ad-hoc and one-off financial injections that favour only the already well-off. PBL became involved when asked to do so, because we felt the responsibility, as an organisation at the interface of science and policy with experience in connecting knowledge to action. On top of that, we are based in a country with a strong tradition in social housing and spatial planning. The event and the report were not only about Ukraine but also with Ukraine, as many Ukrainian researchers and policymakers were deeply involved in the conference as well as in the writing of the report. In this report building blocks for the structuring of Ukraine’s recovery are presented, based on experiences with best practices form all over Europe. It is up to Ukraine and its international partners to take the next steps. The report provides evidence on the current state of housing in Ukraine and how these challenges can be addressed through technical assistance, policy reform and capacity building, drawing on international best practices and experience. In doing so, it offers advice for the Ukrainian Government and other key stakeholders, such as the European Commission and multilateral development banks who shape the implementation of the recovery process.

28. Religious processes in Western Europe at the end of the XXth - the beginning of the XXIst centuries

Abstract: The purpose of the article is a conceptual identification of religiosity tendencies in Western Europe at the end of the XXth - the beginning of the XXIst centuries. The methodological bases of the study were socio-philosophical analysis of the religiosity phenomenon, as well as historical systemic and analytical synthetic methods. The Scientific Novelty. In Western Europe new religious processes go beyond the classical contours of modernity. The dynamics of change in the field of religion takes place under conditions of uncertainty, nonlinearity, ephemerality of social processes, as well as the continuing aggravation of relations between secular culture and religion. It is necessary to be critically aware of the fact that the institutional and socio-cultural return of religion (post-secularity) causes vulgarization, the creation of various distorted forms of religiosity. Our point of view is that the decline of a traditional religiosity continues in Western Europe, which is not a localized tendency and a civilizational integration project, a transnational paradigm are being actively promoted. The Conclusions. Western societies remain a relatively secular part of the global world and differ in the level of a religious diversity and the dynamics of a religious change among their population. From the point of view of the confessional identification, Western European countries can be attributed to one Christian culture (unfortunately, practically lost). According to the criterion of religiosity level, "high religion" is characteristic of countries with the maximum number of Orthodox and Catholics. In Western Europe, there is a situation where religion is often engaged with "vicariously". In Western Europe, an important tendency in religiosity is the subjectivation of faith and practice, which complicates the preservation and transmission of religious traditions. As a result, religiosity is of a situational character.

Abstract: With use of a new $ C+N $ amplitude which correctly accounts for CNI to all orders in $\alpha$ the values of the parameters $\rho^{pp},\sigma_{\mbox{tot}}^{pp}$ and $B^{pp}$ are analysed on the basis of data published by the TOTEM and ATLAS collaborations at energy $\sqrt{s}= 13$ TeV . Abstract: Dark matter sterile neutrinos radiatively decay in the Milky Way, which can be tested with searches for almost monochromatic photons in the X-ray cosmic spectrum. We analyse the data of ART-XC telescope operated for two years in the all-sky survey mode. Abstract: BackgroundAflatoxins (AFs) are common feed contaminants and are one of the common causes of toxin-related pet food poisoning and recalls.ObjectiveCurrently, there are no validated methods for the detection and quantitation of AFs in biological matrices to diagnose AF exposure in live animals. Following a successful intra-laboratory method development to quantify AFB1 and AFM1 in animal urine by HPLC with fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD), the present study was conducted to extensively evaluate the method performance in an unbiased manner using blinded samples.MethodsThe evaluation included two stages. First, the performance was verified in the method-originating laboratory in a single-laboratory blinded method test (BMT-S) trial followed by a multi-laboratory blinded method test (BMT-M) trial.ResultsIn both trials, accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility were satisfactory confirming the relatively good ruggedness and robustness of the method and ensuring that it will perform as expected if used by other laboratories in the future.ConclusionsWe extensively evaluated the performance of a quantitative method to detect AFB1 and AFM1 in animal urine by HPLC-FLD by two different laboratories in two separate BMT-S and BMT-M trials. Both BMT results demonstrated the satisfactory accuracy and precision of the method. It is now available to be adopted by other diagnostic laboratories for purposes of diagnosing AF intoxication in animals.HighlightsA simple urine-based diagnostic test method using HPLC-FLD that originated in a single laboratory now has passed a multi-laboratory evaluation and is now available to be shared with other diagnostic laboratories for purposes of diagnosing AF intoxication in animals so better treatment can be rendered.

Abstract: One of the significant challenges in identifying effective therapy in many chronic and neurodegenerative diseases is the need for reliable biomarkers. Thus, new point-of-care diagnostics tools are essential for unambiguously distinguishing diseased patients from healthy ones providing results in rapid time. In this doctoral thesis, an untargeted metabolomics approach based on high-throughput analytical techniques such as vibrational spectroscopy and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was evaluated in different studies related to the field of health and disease. Thus, this doctoral thesis's main objective is to provide an objective diagnosis of disorders such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Metabolic Syndrome. Different studies were performed to obtain a metabolic profile of healthy and diseased patients. Thus, to obtain specific metabolomic fingerprinting, multiple analytical and multivariate strategies were tested and combined to exploit their respective strengths and drawbacks. Therefore, distinct mid-infrared metabolic fingerprints in the abovementioned diseases were investigated for patient stratification and to guide an accurate and early differential diagnosis. In addition, UPLC-MS analysis successfully complemented vibrational spectroscopy, providing excellent patient discrimination based on specific blood biomarkers. The obtained results are auspicious, giving place to the new hypothesis about disease pathogenesis and possible involved metabolic pathways that should be validated by a further targeted and multidisciplinary approach., Uno de los desafíos significativos en la identificación de terapias efectivas en muchas enfermedades crónicas y neurodegenerativas es la necesidad de biomarcadores confiables. Por lo tanto, nuevas herramientas de diagnóstico en los puntos de atención son esenciales para distinguir sin ambigüedades a los pacientes enfermos de los sanos, proporcionando resultados rápidos. En esta tesis doctoral, se evaluó un enfoque de metabolómica no dirigida basado en técnicas analíticas de alto rendimiento, como la espectroscopia vibracional y la cromatografía líquida-espectrometría de masas (LC-MS), en diferentes estudios relacionados con el campo de la salud y la enfermedad. Por lo tanto, el objetivo principal de esta tesis doctoral es desarrollar estrategias para el diagnóstico objetivo de trastornos como la enfermedad de Parkinson, la enfermedad de Alzheimer, la Esclerosis lateral amiotrófica y el Síndrome metabólico. Se llevaron a cabo diferentes estudios para obtener un perfil metabólico de pacientes sanos y enfermos. De este modo, para obtener un perfil metabólico específico, se probaron y combinaron múltiples estrategias analíticas acopladas con estrategias multivariadas con el fin de explotar sus respectivas fortalezas y debilidades. Por lo tanto, se investigó la existencia de huellas metabólicas distintas en el infrarrojo medio en las enfermedades mencionadas anteriormente, para la estratificación de pacientes y guiar un diagnóstico diferencial preciso y temprano. Además, el análisis UPLC-MS complementó con éxito la espectroscopía vibracional, proporcionando una excelente discriminación de pacientes basada en biomarcadores específicos de la sangre. Los resultados obtenidos son muy prometedores, dando lugar a nuevas hipótesis sobre la patogénesis de las enfermedades y las posibles vías metabólicas involucradas, que deberían ser validadas mediante un enfoque multidisciplinario y dirigido.

Abstract: Molybdenum is a refractory metal regarded as a promising basis for producing high-temperature components. However, the potential of manufacturing molybdenum-based structures by direct ink writing (DIW) has not been explored. In this study, three-dimensional porous molybdenum (Mo) and molybdenum-silicon (Mo-Si) composite lattices were fabricated using DIW with non-milled and milled powders. The effects of Mo powder morphology (resulting from milling) and chemical composition (alloying Mo with 3 and 10 wt% of Si) on the microstructure, phase composition, and static and cyclic compression properties at room temperature were investigated. Lattices fabricated from commercial spherical Mo powder exhibited the highest intra-filament porosity. Conversely, lattices fabricated from milled Mo powder were denser and had higher compressive strength, offset stress, and quasi-elastic gradient. Alloying Mo with Si during sintering resulted in composite lattices with Mo thorn Mo3Si microstructure. A low content of Mo3Si slightly decreased monotonic compression properties but did not affect the cyclic compression response compared to Mo lattices made from milled powder. In contrast, a high content of Mo3Si produced quasi-brittle lattices with reduced compressive strength and increased damage accumulation during cyclic loading. The cyclic behavior of all lattices was characterized by a ratcheting-dominated stress-strain response. Lattices fabricated from milled Mo and milled Mo-3 wt.%Si powders demonstrated superior performance compared to those fabricated from commercial spherical Mo and milled Mo-10 wt%Si powders. The results suggest that using milled powders can enhance the mechanical reliability and promote the use of DIW as preferred additive manufacturing technology for the fabrication of Mo-Si composite lattices. Abstract: This paper investigates how to develop students’ interest in mathematical research by using inquiry-based learning (IBL) as a pedagogical approach. We conducted a case study on the application of IBL to the teaching of approximation theory and Fourier series, which are important topics in mathematics and computer science. We surveyed the students who participated in the IBL workshops and measured their emotional state using the Differential Emotion Scale (DES) by Izard. The results showed that the IBL environment reduced the students’ negative emotions and increased their positive emotions, which in turn enhanced their engagement and motivation in the mathematical research activities. We conclude that IBL is an effective method for fostering students’ interest in mathematical research and suggest some implications for future practice and research.

Abstract: Objective: The purpose of this research article is to examine legal aspects of pedagogical education in digital society and analyze how they are affected by the implementation of the social function of the state. Method: The study is based on a review of relevant literature, legal documents, and online sources in the field of pedagogy and law. The design of the study involves a qualitative approach, with data analyzed using content analysis and thematic analysis techniques. Result: The study explores a range of legal issues related to pedagogical education in the digital society, including privacy, data protection, copyright, intellectual property, online safety, and cybersecurity. The findings of the study reveal that the implementation of the social function of the state has significant implications for the legal aspects of pedagogical education in the digital society. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of legal frameworks to ensure safe, effective, and responsible use of digital technologies in pedagogical activities. The practical implications of this research are numerous, including the need for policymakers to develop and enforce legal frameworks that protect the rights of students and teachers in the digital age. The study also emphasizes the need for educators to be trained in legal issues related to digital technologies, so they can effectively navigate the changing landscape of pedagogical education in the digital society. This article provides valuable insights into the legal aspects of pedagogical education in the digital society and offers recommendations for future research and policy development in this area.

Abstract: In the current situation, a significant part of the existing models of training specialists in the field of education no longer meet the conditions of the labour market. The most important pedagogical skills in the present time are significantly different from the skills that were relevant until recently. Knowledge is still important, but modern teachers also need to have transversal competencies to succeed in their professional activities. So, the research aim is to study the content of the phenomenon “transversal competences”, which will make the process of their forming more effective. To achieve the aim the scientific literature and pedagogical practice was analysed. It was found out that transversal competences are transferable and reusable skills that can be applied in a wide variety of situations and work settings. Transversal competencies are considered as 21st century skills and correlate mostly with human ability to solve problems, related to technological advances and intercultural communication.The analysis of the sources revealed the inconsistency in the use of terms denoting the studied concept and considerable diversity in defining the content of transversal competencies, as different sources distinguish different sets of skills. Based on the framework of transversal competences worked out by UNESCO the modern teacher’s transversal competencies were characterized in six domains: 1) critical and innovative thinking, 2) interpersonal skills, 3) intrapersonal skills, 4) global citizenship, 5) media and information literacy, and 6) others.

Abstract: Italy is Europe's leading rice producer, with over half of total production almost totally concentrated in the north-western part of the Padana plain. In this area, rice irrigation has traditionally been carried out by wet seeding and continuous flooding. The replacement of this technique with the dry seeding and delayed flooding in the last 15 years brought economic benefits to farmers but also strong impacts to the water resource system of the area, characterized by a strong interaction between irrigation and shallow aquifer levels. Wet seeding and Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) could be seen as an alternative irrigation strategy; however, its environmental, economic and social sustainability must be investigated before supporting the dissemination of this "water-saving" irrigation technique over the territory in cooperation with decision-makers and water resource managers. In this paper, the results of an experimental activity carried out in a platform established in the main Italian rice district to compare three irrigation strategies (wet seeding and traditional flooding-WFL, dry seeding and delayed flooding from around the 3-leaf stage-DFL, wet seeding and alternated wetting and drying from the tillering stage-AWD) and data further provided by the farm holder (agronomic inputs and economic costs for the three options) were used to assess their economic and environmental sustainability through an assessment procedure based on quantitative indicators. Interviews with rice growers in the area were used to identify barriers to the adoption of AWD and subsequently propose ways to overcome them. AWD proved to be economically viable and to reduce the irrigation need in the peak month (June) without significantly affecting rice yield or quality (cadmium and arsenic content in rice grain). Abstract: Optical tweezers are tools made of light that enable contactless pushing, trapping, and manipulation of objects, ranging from atoms to space light sails. Since the pioneering work by Arthur Ashkin in the 1970s, optical tweezers have evolved into sophisticated instruments and have been employed in a broad range of applications in the life sciences, physics, and engineering. These include accurate force and torque measurement at the femtonewton level, microrheology of complex fluids, single micro- and nano-particle spectroscopy, single-cell analysis, and statistical-physics experiments. This roadmap provides insights into current investigations involving optical forces and optical tweezers from their theoretical foundations to designs and setups. It also offers perspectives for applications to a wide range of research fields, from biophysics to space exploration.

46. Resonant Effects of a Bar on the Galactic Disk Kinematics Perpendicular to Its Plane

Abstract: Detailed analysis of kinematics of the Milky Way disk in the solar neighborhood based on the GAIA DR3 catalog reveals the existence of peculiarities in the stellar velocity distribution perpendicular to the galactic plane. We study the influence of resonances -- the outer Lindblad resonance and the outer vertical Lindblad resonance -- of a rotating bar with stellar oscillations perpendicular to the plane of the disk, and their role in shaping the spatial and the velocity distributions of stars. We find that the $Z$ and $V_Z$ distributions of stars with respect to $L_Z$ are affected by the outer Lindblad resonance. The existence of bar resonance with stellar oscillations perpendicular to the plane of the disk is demonstrated for a long (large semi-axis 5 kpc) and fast rotating bar with $\Omega_{b}= 60.0$ $km~s^{-1}~kpc^{-1}$. We show also that, in the model with the long and fast rotating bar, some stars in the 2:1 OLR region deviate far from their original places, entering the bar region. A combination of resonance excitation of stellar motions at the 2:1 OLR region together with strong interaction of the stars with the bar potential leads to the formation of the group of 'escapees', i.e., stars that deviate in $R$ and $Z$ -- directions at large distances from the resonance region. Abstract: The wind mission Aeolus of the European Space Agency was a groundbreaking achievement for Earth observation. Between 2018 and 2023, the space-borne lidar instrument ALADIN onboard the Aeolus satellite measured atmospheric wind profiles with global coverage which contributed to improving the accuracy of numerical weather prediction. The precision of the wind observations, however, declined over the course of the mission due to a progressive loss of the atmospheric backscatter signal. The analysis of the root cause was supported by the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina whose fluorescence detector registered the ultraviolet laser pulses emitted from the instrument in space, thereby offering an estimation of the laser energy at the exit of the instrument for several days in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The reconstruction of the laser beam not only allowed for an independent assessment of the Aeolus performance, but also helped to improve the accuracy in the determination of the laser beam's ground track on single pulse level. Abstract: PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars (PLATO) is the ESA M3 space mission dedicated to detect and characterise transiting exoplanets including information from the asteroseismic properties of their stellar hosts. The uninterrupted and high-precision photometry provided by space-borne instruments such as PLATO require long preparatory phases. An exhaustive list of tests are paramount to design a mission that meets the performance requirements, and as such, simulations are an indispensable tool in the mission preparation. To accommodate PLATO's need of versatile simulations prior to mission launch - that at the same time describe accurately the innovative but complex multi-telescope design - we here present the end-to-end PLATO simulator specifically developed for the purpose, namely PlatoSim. We show step-by-step the algorithms embedded into the software architecture of PlatoSim that allow the user to simulate photometric time series of CCD images and light curves in accordance to the expected observations of PLATO. In the context of the PLATO payload, a general formalism of modelling, end-to-end, incoming photons from the sky to the final measurement in digital units is discussed. We show the strong predictive power of PlatoSim through its diverse applicability and contribution to numerous working groups within the PLATO Mission Consortium. This involves the on-going mechanical integration and alignment, performance studies of the payload, the pipeline development and assessments of the scientific goals. PlatoSim is a state-of-the-art simulator that is able to produce the expected photometric observations of PLATO to a high level of accuracy. Abstract: We report on the detection of type-C quasi-periodic oscillations during the initial stages of the outburst of Swift J1727.8-1613 in 2023. Using data of the INTEGRAL observatory along with the data of the SRG/ART-XC and Swift/XRT telescopes the fast growth of the QPO frequency was traced. We present a hard X-ray lightcurve that covers the initial stages of the 2023 outburst - the fast rise and plateau - and demonstrate that the QPO frequency was stable during the plateau. The switching from type-C to type-B QPO was detected with the beginning of the source flaring activity. We have constructed a broad-band spectrum of Swift J1727.8-1613 and found an additional hard power-law spectral component extending at least up to 400 keV. Finally, we have obtained an upper limit on the hard X-ray flux at the beginning of the optical outburst and estimated the delay of the X-ray outburst with respect to the optical one., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS Letters

Abstract: The Pierre Auger Collaboration has embraced the concept of open access to their research data since its foundation, with the aim of giving access to the widest possible community. A gradual process of release began as early as 2007 when 1% of the cosmic-ray data was made public, along with 100% of the space-weather information. In February 2021, a portal was released containing 10% of cosmic-ray data collected from 2004 to 2018, during Phase I of the Observatory. The Portal included detailed documentation about the detection and reconstruction procedures, analysis codes that can be easily used and modified and, additionally, visualization tools. Since then the Portal has been updated and extended. In 2023, a catalog of the 100 highest-energy cosmic-ray events examined in depth has been included. A specific section dedicated to educational use has been developed with the expectation that these data will be explored by a wide and diverse community including professional and citizen-scientists, and used for educational and outreach initiatives.
