1. Identifying and predicting deterioration during psychotherapeutic interventions

Abstract

The literature review critically evaluated research articles focusing on deterioration in psychotherapy published since a watershed review by Mohr (1995). This review adopted the recommendations made by Mohr (1995) as a framework for the literature. A total of 28 studies were identified and reviewed using a quality rating system derived from Mohr's recommendations according to the extent to which these recommendations were implemented in the identified studies. The review yielded a higher average rate of deterioration (9-17%) in comparison with Mohr's review (5-10%). It was concluded that research into deterioration generally has continued to suffer from methodological limitations. The intention of the research report was to investigate the phenomena of overall deterioration and sudden deterioration in a routinely collected data set collected from the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) initiative. Sudden deterioration was explored to determine whether it existed and how it may be defined. The rates of deterioration within the IAPT data were identified, and predictors of these were assessed. It was determined that an appropriate definition for sudden deterioration was a reliable between-session change using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9; PHQ-9), that was not allied to sudden gains. Rates of sudden deterioration and overall deterioration were found to be 3.4% and 3.1% respectively. It was concluded that sudden deterioration exists as a phenomenon, is closely related to overall deterioration and that rates of deterioration in the IAPT dataset were relatively low.

An interview with Gemma Hutton and Greg Thorpe, queer performance makers and activists in Belfast and Manchester, respectively. Published in Interventions, the online Open Access site connected with Contemporary Theatre Review. The interview is part of the work undertaken by Alyson Campbell and Stephen Farrier as co-editors of a special edition of Contemporary Theatre Review (33.1-2), called What’s Queer about Queer Performance now? In the interview we ask Gemma and Greg what is queer work in the particular context in which they make it. We talk about who’s making queer performance, who’s watching it, and how’s that happening, and about what they think the future of queer performance might be, what it might look like and what it might do. For both, questions of care in the context of queer performance communities was foremost in their work.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is pragmatically defined as disordered bowel function after rectal resection leading to a detriment in quality of life. This broad characterization does not allow for precise estimates of prevalence. The LARS score was designed as a simple tool for clinical evaluation of LARS. Although the LARS score has good clinical utility, it may not capture all important aspects that patients may experience. The aim of this collaboration was to develop an international consensus definition of LARS that encompasses all aspects of the condition and is informed by all stakeholders. METHODS: This international patient-provider initiative used an online Delphi survey, regional patient consultation meetings and an international consensus meeting. Three expert groups participated: patients, surgeons and other health professionals from five regions (Australasia, Denmark, Spain, Great Britain and Ireland, and North America) and in three languages (English, Spanish and Danish). The primary outcome measured was the priorities for the definition of LARS. RESULTS: Three hundred and twenty-five participants (156 patients) registered. The response rates for successive rounds of the Delphi survey were 86%, 96% and 99%. Eighteen priorities emerged from the Delphi survey. Patient consultation and consensus meetings refined these priorities to eight symptoms and eight consequences that capture essential aspects of the syndrome. Sampling bias may have been present, in particular, in the patient panel because social media was used extensively in recruitment. There was also dominance of the surgical panel at the final consensus meeting despite attempts to mitigate this. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first definition of LARS developed with direct input from a large international patient panel. Abstract

EXECUTIVE SUMMARYTeamwork skills are essential in the design industry where practitioners negotiate often-conflicting design options in multi-disciplinary teams. Indeed, many of the bodies that accredit design courses explicitly list teamwork skills as essential attributes of design graduates e.g., the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA), Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) of the United States and the Institution of Engineers, Australia (IEAust). In addition to the need to meet the demands of the accrediting bodies, there are many reasons for the ubiquitous use of teamwork assignments in design schools. For instance, teamwork learning is seen as being representative of work in practice where design is nearly always a collaborative activity. Learning and teaching in teamwork contexts in design education are not without particular challenges. In particular, two broad issues have been identified: first, many students leave academia without having been taught the knowledge and skills of how to design in teams; second, teaching, assessment and assignment design need to be better informed by a clear understanding of what leads to effective teamwork and the learning of teamwork skills. In recognition of the lack of a structured approach to integrating teamwork learning into the curricula of design programs, this project set out to answer three primary research questions: • How do we teach teamwork skills in the context of design? • How do we assess teamwork skills?• How do design students best learn teamwork skills?In addition, four more specific questions were investigated:1.
