Cross sections and rate coefficients for the Dissociative Recombination (DR) of the NS+ ion induced by collisions with low-energy electrons are reported for temperatures between 10 and 1000 K, relevant to a large range of interstellar cloud temperatures. Uncertainties are discussed for these rates. Comparisons are made with DR rates for the isovalent NO+ molecular ion which are found to be much faster. The present findings lead to a moderate dissociative reaction rate coefficient, smaller by a factor of 2 than the current estimates reported in the different kinetic databases for a temperature of 10 K. We consider that our rate coefficients obtained through multichannel quantum defect theory for NS+ are likely to be better than those displayed in the different kinetic databases., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

During the pre-main-sequence (pre-MS) evolution stage of a star, significant amounts of stellar mass are accreted during episodic accretion events, such as multi-decade FUor-type outbursts. Here, we present a near-infrared spectroscopic follow-up study of 33 high-amplitude (most with $\Delta K_s$ > 4 mag) variable sources discovered by the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey. Based on the spectral features, 25 sources are classified as eruptive young stellar objects (YSOs), including 15 newly identified FUors, six with long-lasting but EXor-like bursts of magnetospheric accretion and four displaying outflow-dominated spectra. By examining the photometric behaviours of eruptive YSOs, we found most FUor-type outbursts have higher amplitudes ($\Delta K_s$ and $\Delta W2$), faster eruptive timescales and bluer infrared colours than the other outburst types. In addition, we identified seven post-main sequence variables apparently associated with deep dipping events and an eruptive star with deep AlO absorption bands resembling those seen in the V838 Mon stellar merger., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures

Potassium hydroxide (KOH) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) are expected to occur in the atmospheres of hot rocky super-Earth exoplanets but a lack of spectroscopic data is hampering their potential detection. Using robust first-principles methodologies, comprehensive molecular line lists for KOH and NaOH that are applicable for temperatures up to $T=3500$ K are presented. The KOH OYT4 line list covers the 0-6000 cm$^{-1}$ (wavelengths $\lambda > 1.67$ $\mu$m) range and comprises 38 billion transitions between 7.3 million energy levels with rotational excitation up to $J=255$. The NaOH OYT5 line list covers the 0 - 9000 cm$^{-1}$ (wavelengths $\lambda > 1.11$ $\mu$m) range and contains almost 50 billion lines involving 7.9 million molecular states with rotational excitation up to $J=206$. The OYT4 and OYT5 line lists are available from the ExoMol database at www.exomol.com and should greatly aid the study of hot rocky exoplanets.

A new hot line list for the main isotopologue of CO$_2$ is presented. The line list consists of almost 2.5 billion transitions between 3.5 million rotation-vibration states of CO$_2$ in its ground electronic state, covering the wavenumber range 0-20000 cm$^{-1}$ ($\lambda >0.5$ $\mu$m) with the upper and lower energy thresholds of 36 000 cm$^{-1}$ and 16 000 cm$^{-1}$, respectively. The ro-vibrational energies and wavefunctions are computed variationally using the Ames-2 accurate empirical potential energy surface. The ro-vibrational transition probabilities in the form of Einstein coefficients are computed using an accurate ab initio dipole moment surface using variational program TROVE. A new implementation of TROVE which uses an exact nuclear-motion kinetic energy operator is employed. Comparisons with the existing hot line lists are presented. The line list should be useful for atmospheric retrievals of exoplanets and cool stars. The UCL-4000 line list is available from the CDS and ExoMol databases.

Silicon dioxide (SiO$_2$) is expected to occur in the atmospheres of hot rocky super-Earth exoplanets but a lack of spectroscopic data is hampering its possible detection. Here, we present the first, comprehensive molecular line list for SiO$_2$. The line list, named OYT3, covers the wavenumber range 0\,--\,6000~cm$^{-1}$ (wavelengths $\lambda > 1.67$~$\mu$m) and is suitable for temperatures up to $T=3000$~K. Almost 33 billion transitions involving 5.69 million rotation-vibration states with rotational excitation up to $J=255$ have been computed using robust first-principles methodologies. The OYT3 line list is available from the ExoMol database at http://www.exomol.com.

The calcium monohydroxide radical (CaOH) is an important astrophysical molecule relevant to cool stars and rocky exoplanets, amongst other astronomical environments. Here, we present a consistent set of highly accurate rovibronic (rotation-vibration-electronic) energy levels for the five lowest electronic states ($\tilde{X}\,^2\Sigma^+$, $\tilde{A}\,^2\Pi$, $\tilde{B}\,^2\Sigma^+$, $\tilde{C}\,^2\Delta$, $\tilde{D}\,^2\Sigma^+$) of CaOH. A comprehensive analysis of the published spectroscopic literature on this system has allowed 1955 energy levels to be determined from 3204 rovibronic experimental transitions, all with unique quantum number labelling and measurement uncertainties. The dataset covers rotational excitation up to $J=62.5$ for molecular states below 29\,000~cm$^{-1}$. The analysis was performed using the MARVEL algorithm, which is a robust procedure based on the theory of spectroscopic networks. The dataset provided will significantly aid future interstellar, circumstellar and atmospheric detections of CaOH, as well as assisting in the design of efficient laser cooling schemes in ultracold molecule research and precision tests of fundamental physics.

We document recent progress made in the development and deployment of a science gateway for atomic and molecular physics (AMP) [10]. The molecular scattering applications supported in the gateway and the early phase of the project were described in a preliminary report [33]. Here, we present recent advances in both the platform's capabilities and in its adoption for additional software suites and new possibilities for further development. The past year has seen substantial progress, with the addition of two new software suites and additional authors. A very successful workshop, supported by the MOLSSI, NSF, and NIST, was held at NIST from Dec 11-13, 2019. The agenda contained discussions of the science as well as demonstrations of the codes both in production and learning modes. More than 30 scientists participated in the workshop. Over the past few months, the number of registered gateway users has grown to over 60. The applications being deployed provide users with a number of state-of-the-art computational techniques to treat electron scattering from atomic and molecular targets, as well as the interaction of radiation with such systems. One may view all of these approaches as generalized close-coupling methods, where the inclusion of electron correlation is accomplished via the addition of generalized pseudostates. A number of the methods can also be employed to compute high-quality bound-state wave functions by closing the channels and imposing exponentially decaying boundary conditions. The application software suites are deployed on a number of NSF and DoE supercomputing systems. These deployments are brought to the user community through the science gateway with user interfaces, post-processing, and visualization tools. Below we outline our efforts in deploying the Django web framework for the AMPGateway using the Apache Airavata gateway middleware, discuss the new advanced capabilities available, and provide an outlook for future directions for the gateway

Accurate line lists are crucial for correctly modelling a variety of astrophysical phenomena, including stellar photospheres and the atmospheres of extrasolar planets. This paper presents a new line database TOTO for the main isotopologues of titanium oxide (TiO): 46Ti16O, 47Ti16O,48Ti16O, 49Ti16O, and 50Ti16O. The 48Ti16O line list contains transitions with wave-numbers up to 30 000 cm−1, i.e. longwards of 0.33 μm. The TOTO line list includes all dipole-allowed transitions between 13 low-lying electronic states (X3∆, a 1∆, d 1∑+, E 3∏, A 3Φ, B 3∏, C 3∆, b 1∏, c 1Φ, f 1∆, e 1∑+). Ab initio potential energy curves (PECs) are computed at the icMRCI level and combined with spin–orbit and other coupling curves. These PECs and couplings are iteratively refined to match known empirical energy levels. Accurate line intensities are generated using ab initio dipole moment curves. The TOTO line lists are appropriate for temperatures below 5000 K and contain 30 million transitions for 48Ti16O; it is made available in electronic form via the CDS data centre and via www.exomol.com. Tests of the line lists show greatly improved agreement with observed spectra for objects such as M-dwarfs GJ876 and GL581.

Results for elastic atom-atom scattering are obtained as a first practical application of RmatReact, a new code for generating high-accuracy scattering observables from potential energy curves. RmatReact has been created in response to new experimental methods which have paved the way for the routine production of ultracold (μK) atoms and molecules, and hence the experimental study of chemical reactions involving only a small number of partial waves. Elastic scattering between argon atoms is studied here. There is an unresolved discrepancy between different Ar2 potential energy curves which give different numbers of vibrational bound states and different scattering lengths for the Ar2 dimer. Depending on the number of bound states, the scattering length is either large and positive or large and negative. Scattering observables, specifically the scattering length, effective range, and partial and total cross-sections, are computed at low collision energies and compared to previous results. In general, good agreement is obtained, although our full scattering treatment yields resonances which are slightly lower in energy and narrower than previous determinations using the same potential energy curve.

A globally correct potential energy surface (PES) for the H+3 molecular ion is presented. The Born-Oppenheimer (BO) ab initio grid points of Pavanello et al. [J. Chem. Phys.136, 184303 (2012)] are refitted as BOPES75K, which reproduces the energies below dissociation with a root mean square deviation of 0.05 cm−1; points between dissociation and 75,000 cm−1 are reproduced with the average accuracy of a few wavenumbers. The new PES75K+ potential combines BOPES75K with adiabatic, relativistic and quantum electrodynamics (QED) surfaces to provide the most accurate representation of the H+3 global potential to date, overcoming the limitations on previous high accuracy H+3 PESs near and above dissociation. PES75K+ can be used to provide predictions of bound rovibrational energy levels with an accuracy of approaching 0.1 cm−1. Calculation of rovibrational energy levels within PES75K+ suggests that the non-adiabatic correction remains a limiting factor. The PES is also constructed to give the correct asymptotic limit making it suitable for use in studies of the H++H2 prototypical chemical reaction. An improved dissociation energy for H+3 is derived as D0=35,076 ± 2cm−1.

Experiments are starting to probe collisions and chemical reactions between atoms and molecules at ultralow temperatures. We have developed a new theoretical procedure for studying these collisions using the R-matrix method. Here, this method is tested for the atom—atom collisions described by a Morse potential. Analytic solutions for continuum states of the Morse potential are derived and compared with numerical results computed using an R-matrix method, where the inner region wavefunctions are obtained using a standard nuclear motion algorithm. Results are given for eigenphases and scattering lengths. Excellent agreement is obtained in all cases. Progress in developing a general procedure for treating ultralow energy reactive and non-reactive collisions is discussed.

The chemical environments of young planets are assumed to be largely influenced by impacts of bodies lingering on unstable trajectories after the dissolution of the protoplanetary disk. We explore the chemical consequences of impacts within the context of reducing planetary atmospheres dominated by carbon monoxide, methane and molecular nitrogen. A terawatt high-power laser was selected in order to simulate the airglow plasma and blast wave surrounding the impactor. The chemical results of these experiments are then applied to a theoretical atmospheric model. The impact simulation results in substantial volume mixing ratios within the reactor of 5% hydrogen cyanide (HCN), 8% acetylene (C$_2$H$_2$), 5% cyanoacetylene (HC$_3$N) and 1% ammonia (NH$_3$). These yields are combined with estimated impact rates for the Early Earth to predict surface boundary conditions for an atmospheric model. We show that impacts might have served as sources of energy that would have led to steady-state surface quantities of 0.4% C$_2$H$_2$, 400 ppm HCN and 40 ppm NH$_3$. We provide simulated transit spectra for an Earth-like exoplanet with this reducing atmosphere during and shortly after eras of intense impacts. We predict that acetylene is as observable as other molecular features on exoplanets with reducing atmospheres that have recently gone through their own `Heavy Bombardments', with prominent features at 3.05 $\mu$m and 10.5 $\mu$m., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication by The Astrophysical Journal

Accurately modelling cold and ultracold reactive collisions occurring over deep potential wells, such as D+ + H2→H+ + HD, requires the development of new theoretical and computational methodologies. One potentially useful framework is the R-matrix method adopted widely for electron.molecule collisions which has more recently been applied to non-reactive heavy-particle collisions such as Ar.Ar. The existing treatment of non-reactive elastic and inelastic scattering needs to be substantially extended to enable modelling of reactive collisions: this is the subject of this paper. Herein, we develop the general mathematical formulation for non-reactive elastic and inelastic scattering, photoassociation, photodissociation, charge exchange and reactive scattering using the R-matrix method. Of particular note is that the inner region, of central importance to calculable R-matrix methodologies, must be finite in all scattering coordinates rather than a single scattering coordinate as for non-reactive scattering. Line lists for the sulphur-containing molecules SH (the mercapto radical) and NS are computed as part of the ExoMol project. These line lists consider transitions within the X 2Π ground state for 32SH, 33SH, 34SH and 32SD, and 14N32S, 14N33S, 14N34S, 14N36S and 15N32S. Ab initio potential energy (PEC) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) curves are computed and then improved by fitting to experimentally observed transitions. Fully ab initio dipole moment curves (DMCs) computed at high level of theory are used to produce the final line lists. For SH, our fit gives a root-mean-square (rms) error of 0.03 cm−1 between the observed (vmax = 4, Jmax = 34.5) and calculated transitions wavenumbers; this is extrapolated such that all X 2Π rotational-vibrational-electronic (rovibronic) bound states are considered. For 32SH the resulting line list contains about 81 000 transitions and 2 300 rovibronic states, considering levels up to vmax = 14 and Jmax = 60.5. For NS the refinement used a combination of experimentally determined frequencies and energy levels and led to an rms fitting error of 0.002 cm−1. Each NS calculated line list includes around 2.8 million transitions and 31 000 rovibronic states with a vibrational range up to v = 53 and rotational range to J = 235.5, which covers up to 23 000 cm−1. Both line lists should be complete for temperatures up to 5000 K. Example spectra simulated using this line list are shown and comparisons made to the existing data in the CDMS database. The line lists are available from the CDS (http://cdsarc.u-strasbg.fr) and ExoMol (www.exomol.com) data bases.

These, along with a previously computed ab initio dipole curve for the X and A states are used to generate vibrational-rotational wavefunctions, transition energies and A-values. From the transition energies and Einstein coefficients, accurate assigned synthetic spectra for BeH and its isotopologues are obtained at given rotational and vibrational temperatures. The BeH spectrum is compared with a high resolution hollow-cathode lamp spectrum and the BeD spectrum with high resolution spectra from JET giving effective vibrational and rotational temperatures. The incident electron energy range is 10-5-2.7 eV and the electron temperature range is 100-5000 K. The vibrational dependence of these collisional processes is highlighted. The resulting data are useful in magnetic confinement fusion edge plasma modeling and spectroscopy, in devices with beryllium based main chamber materials, such as ITER and JET, and operating with the deuterium-tritium fuel mix. An extensive rate coefficients database is presented in graphical form and also by analytic fit functions whose parameters are tabulated in the supplementary material.

Zirconium oxide (ZrO) is an important astrophysical molecule that defines the S-star classification class for cool giant stars. Accurate, empirical rovibronic energy levels, with associated labels and uncertainties, are reported for nine low-lying electronic states of the diatomic 90Zr16O molecule. These 8088 empirical energy levels are determined using the Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels algorithm with 23,317 input assigned transition frequencies, 22,549 of which were validated during this study. A temperature-dependent partition function is presented alongside updated spectroscopic constants for the nine low-lying electronic states.

We present here the analysis of 30 gaseous extrasolar planets, with temperatures between 600 and 2400 K and radii between 0.35 and 1.9 R Jup. The quality of the HST/WFC3 spatially scanned data combined with our specialized analysis tools allow us to study the largest and most self-consistent sample of exoplanetary transmission spectra to date and examine the collective behavior of warm and hot gaseous planets rather than isolated case studies. We define a new metric, the Atmospheric Detectability Index (ADI) to evaluate the statistical significance of an atmospheric detection and find statistically significant atmospheres in around 16 planets out of the 30 analyzed. For most of the Jupiters in our sample, we find the detectability of their atmospheres to be dependent on the planetary radius but not on the planetary mass. This indicates that planetary gravity plays a secondary role in the state of gaseous planetary atmospheres. We detect the presence of water vapour in all of the statistically detectable atmospheres, and we cannot rule out its presence in the atmospheres of the others. In addition, TiO and/or VO signatures are detected with 4σ confidence in WASP-76 b, and they are most likely present in WASP-121 b. We find no correlation between expected signal-to-noise and atmospheric detectability for most targets. This has important implications for future large-scale surveys.

Comprehensive rotation-vibration line lists are presented for the two main isotopologues of methyl chloride, $^{12}$CH$_3{}^{35}$Cl and $^{12}$CH$_3{}^{37}$Cl. The line lists, OYT-35 and OYT-37, are suitable for temperatures up to $T=1200\,$K and consider transitions with rotational excitation up to $J=85$ in the wavenumber range $0$--$6400\,$cm$^{-1}$ (wavelengths $\lambda> 1.56\,\mu$m). Over 166 billion transitions between 10.2 million energy levels have been calculated variationally for each line list using a new empirically refined potential energy surface, determined by refining to 739 experimentally derived energy levels up to $J=5$, and an established {\it ab initio} dipole moment surface. The OYT line lists show excellent agreement with newly measured high-temperature infrared absorption cross-sections, reproducing both strong and weak intensity features across the spectrum. The line lists are available from the ExoMol database and the CDS database.

Cross sections are presented for dissociative recombination and electron-impact vibrational excitation of the ArH+ molecular ion at electron energies appropriate for the interstellar environment. The R-matrix method is employed to determine the molecular structure data, i.e. the position and width of the resonance states. The cross sections and the corresponding Maxwellian rate coefficients are computed using a method based on the Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory. The main result of the paper is the very low dissociative recombination rate found at temperatures below 1000K. This is in agreement with the previous upper limit measurement in merged beams and offers a realistic explanation to the presence of ArH+ in exotic interstellar conditions., Comment: 6 pages; 7 figures

Availability of reliable atomic and molecular opacity tables is essential in a wide variety of astronomical modeling: the solar and stellar interiors, stellar and planetary atmospheres, stellar evolution, pulsating stars, and protoplanetary disks, to name a few. With the advancement of powerful research techniques such as helio-seismology and asteroseismology, solar neutrino-flux measurements, exoplanet survey satellites, three-dimensional hydrodynamic atmospheric simulations (including non-LTE and granulation effects), high-performance computing of atomic and molecular data, and innovative plasma experiments the accuracy and completeness of opacity tables is being taken to an unprecedented level. The goal of the second Workshop on Astrophysical Opacities was to gather opacity data producers and consumers from both the atomic and molecular sectors to contribute to solving outstanding problems and to develop more effective and integrated interfaces. 44 325 measured and assigned transitions of H₂³²S, the parent isotopologue of the hydrogen sulfide molecule, are collated from 33 publications into a single database and reviewed critically. Based on this information, rotation-vibration energy levels are determined for the ground electronic state using the Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels (Marvel) technique. The ortho and para principal components of the measured spectroscopic network of H₂³²S are considered separately. The verified set of 25 293 ortho-- and 18 778 para- H₂³²S transitions determine 3969 ortho and 3467 para energy levels. The Marvel results are compared with alternative data compilations, including a theoretical variational linelist.

We provide cross sections and Maxwell rate coefficients for reactive collisions of slow electrons with BeH+ ions on all the eighteen vibrational levels (X-1 Sigma(+), v(i)(+) = 0, 1, 2, ... , 17) using a Multichannel Quantum Defect Theory (MQDT)-type approach. These data on dissociative recombination, vibrational excitation and vibrational de-excitation are relevant for magnetic confinement fusion edge plasma modeling and spectroscopy, in devices with beryllium based main chamber materials, such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and the Joint European Torus (JET). Our results are presented in graphical form and as fitted analytical functions, the parameters of which are organized in tables.

Involving students in state-of-the-art research from an early age eliminates the idea that science is only for the scientists and empowers young people to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects. It is also a great opportunity to dispel harmful stereotypes about who is suitable for STEM careers, while leaving students feeling engaged in modern science and the scientific method.As part of the Twinkle Space Mission's educational programme, EduTwinkle, students between the ages of 15 and 18 have been performing original research associated with the exploration of space since January 2016. The student groups have each been led by junior researchers—PhD and post-doctoral scientists—who themselves benefit substantially from the opportunity to supervise and manage a research project. This research aims to meet a standard for publication in peer-reviewed journals. At present the research of two ORBYTS teams have been published, one in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series and another in JQSRT; we expect more papers to follow.Here we outline the necessary steps for a productive scientific collaboration with school children, generalising from the successes and downfalls of the pilot ORBYTS projects.

Accurate, experimental rovibronic energy levels, with associated labels and uncertainties, are reported for 11 lowlying electronic states of the diatomic 48Ti16O molecule, determined using the MARVEL (Measured Active Rotational-Vibrational Energy Levels) algorithm. All levels are based on lines corresponding to critically reviewed and validated high-resolution experimental spectra taken from 24 literature sources. The transition data are in the 2-22,160 cm-1 region. Out of the 49,679 measured transitions, 43,885 are triplet-triplet, 5710 are singlet-singlet, and 84 are triplet-singlet transitions. A careful analysis of the resulting experimental spectroscopic network (SN) allows 48,590 transitions to be validated. The transitions determine 93 vibrational band origins of 48Ti16O, including 71 triplet and 22 singlet ones. There are 276 (73) triplet-triplet (singlet-singlet) band-heads derived from MARVEL experimental energies, 123(38) of which have never been assigned in low- or high-resolution experiments. The highest J value, where J stands for the total angular momentum, for which an energy level is validated is 163. The number of experimentally derived triplet and singlet 48Ti16O rovibrational energy levels is 8682 and 1882, respectively. The lists of validated lines and levels for 48Ti16O are deposited in the supporting information to this paper.

A variationally computed $^{28}$SiH$_4$ rotation-vibration line list applicable for temperatures up to $T=1200\,$K is presented. The line list, called OY2T, considers transitions with rotational excitation up to $J=42$ in the wavenumber range $0$--$5000\,$cm$^{-1}$ (wavelengths $\lambda> 2\,\mu$m). Just under 62.7 billion transitions have been calculated between 6.1 million energy levels. Rovibrational calculations have utilized a new `spectroscopic' potential energy surface determined by empirical refinement to 1452 experimentally derived energy levels up to $J=6$, and a previously reported \textit{ab initio} dipole moment surface. The temperature-dependent partition function of silane, the OY2T line list format, and the temperature dependence of the OY2T line list are discussed. Comparisons with the PNNL spectral library and other experimental sources indicate that the OY2T line list is robust and able to accurately reproduce weaker intensity features. We present here the analysis of 30 gaseous extrasolar planets, with temperatures between 600 and 2400 K and radii between 0.35 and 1.9 $R_\mathrm{Jup}$. The quality of the HST/WFC3 spatially scanned data combined with our specialized analysis tools allow us to study the largest and most self-consistent sample of exoplanetary transmission spectra to date and examine the collective behavior of warm and hot gaseous planets rather than isolated case-studies. We define a new metric, the Atmospheric Detectability Index (ADI) to evaluate the statistical significance of an atmospheric detection and find statistically significant atmospheres around 16 planets out of the 30 analysed. For most of the Jupiters in our sample, we find the detectability of their atmospheres to be dependent on the planetary radius but not on the planetary mass. This indicates that planetary gravity plays a secondary role in the state of gaseous planetary atmospheres. We detect the presence of water vapour in all of the statistically detectable atmospheres, and we cannot rule out its presence in the atmospheres of the others. In addition, TiO and/or VO signatures are detected with 4$\sigma$ confidence in WASP-76 b, and they are most likely present in WASP-121 b. We find no correlation between expected signal-to-noise and atmospheric detectability for most targets. We present a detailed theoretical study of the rotational excitation of CH$^+$ due to reactive and nonreactive collisions involving C$^+(^2P)$, H$_2$, CH$^+$, H and free electrons. Specifically, the formation of CH$^+$ proceeds through the reaction between C$^+(^2P)$ and H$_2(\nu_{\rm H_2}=1, 2)$, while the collisional (de)excitation and destruction of CH$^+$ is due to collisions with hydrogen atoms and free electrons. State-to-state and initial-state-specific rate coefficients are computed in the kinetic temperature range 10-3000~K for the inelastic, exchange, abstraction and dissociative recombination processes using accurate potential energy surfaces and the best scattering methods. Good agreement, within a factor of 2, is found between the experimental and theoretical thermal rate coefficients, except for the reaction of CH$^+$ with H atoms at kinetic temperatures below 50~K. The full set of collisional and chemical data are then implemented in a radiative transfer model. Our Non-LTE calculations confirm that the formation pumping due to vibrationally excited H$_2$ has a substantial effect on the excitation of CH$^+$ in photon-dominated regions. In addition, we are able to reproduce, within error bars, the far-infrared observations of CH$^+$ toward the Orion Bar and the planetary nebula NGC~7027. Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics published the first Plasma Roadmap in 2012 consisting of the individual perspectives of 16 leading experts in the various sub-fields of low temperature plasma science and technology. The 2017 Plasma Roadmap is the first update of a planned series of periodic updates of the Plasma Roadmap. The continuously growing interdisciplinary nature of the low temperature plasma field and its equally broad range of applications are making it increasingly difficult to identify major challenges that encompass all of the many sub-fields and applications. This intellectual diversity is ultimately a strength of the field. The current state of the art for the 19 sub-fields addressed in this roadmap demonstrates the enviable track record of the low temperature plasma field in the development of plasmas as an enabling technology for a vast range of technologies that underpin our modern society. At the same time, the many important scientific and technological challenges shared in this roadmap show that the path forward is not only scientifically rich but has the potential to make wide and far reaching contributions to many societal challenges.

Moreover, molecules, isotopologues, and perturbing gases have been added that address the issues of atmospheres beyond the Earth. Of considerable note, experimental IR cross-sections for almost 300 additional molecules important in different areas of atmospheric science have been added to the database. The compilation can be accessed through www.hitran.org. Most of the HITRAN data have now been cast into an underlying relational database structure that offers many advantages over the long-standing sequential text-based structure. The new structure empowers the user in many, ways. It enables the incorporation of an extended set of fundamental parameters per transition, sophisticated line-shape formalisms, easy user-defined output formats, and very convenient searching, filtering, and plotting of data. Twenty-four databases contributed by different groups around the world can be accessed on LXCat. New contributors are welcome; the database contributors retain ownership and are responsible for the contents and maintenance of the individual databases. The spectra (rotational, rotation-vibrational or electronic) of diatomic molecules due to transitions involving only closed-shell (1Σ ) electronic states follow very regular, simple patterns and their theoretical analysis is usually straightforward. On the other hand, open-shell electronic states lead to more complicated spectral patterns and, moreover, often appear as a manifold of closely lying electronic states, leading to perturbed spectra of even greater complexity. This is especially true when at least one of the atoms is a transition metal. Traditionally these complex cases have been analysed using approaches based on perturbation theory, with semi-empirical parameters determined by fitting to spectral data. Recently the needs of two rather diverse scientific areas have driven the demand for improved theoretical models of open-shell diatomic systems based on an ab initio approach; these areas are ultracold chemistry and the astrophysics of 'cool' stars, brown dwarfs and most recently extrasolar planets. However, the complex electronic structure of these molecules combined with the accuracy requirements of high-resolution spectroscopy render such an approach particularly challenging. This review describes recent progress in developing methods for directly solving the effective Schrö dinger equation for open-shell diatomic molecules, with a focus on molecules containing a transtion metal. It considers four aspects of the problem: (i) the electronic structure problem; (ii) non-perturbative treatments of the curve couplings; (iii) the solution of the nuclear motion Schrö dinger equation; (iv) the generation of accurate electric dipole transition intensities. Examples of applications are used to illustrate these issues.

An accurate line list, VOMYT, of spectroscopic transitions is presented for hot VO. The 13 lowest electronic states are considered. Curves and couplings are based on initial ab initio electronic structure calculations and then tuned using available experimental data. Dipole moment curves, used to obtain transition intensities, are computed using high levels of theory (e.g. MRCI/aug-cc-pVQZ using state-specific or minimal-state complete active space for dipole moments). This line list contains over 277 million transitions between almost 640 000 energy levels. It covers the wavelengths longer than 0.29 μm and includes all transitions from energy levels within the lowest nine electronic states which have energies less than 20 000 cm-1 to upper states within the lowest 13 electronic states which have energies below 50 000 cm-1. The line lists give significantly increased absorption at infrared wavelengths compared to currently available VO line lists. The Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC) Consortium is a worldwide consortium which federates atomic and molecular databases through an e-science infrastructure and an organisation to support this activity. About 90% of the inter-connected databases handle data that are used for the interpretation of astronomical spectra and for modelling in many fields of astrophysics. Recently the VAMDC Consortium has connected databases from the radiation damage and the plasma communities, as well as promoting the publication of data from Indian institutes. This paper describes how the VAMDC Consortium is organised for the optimal distribution of atomic and molecular data for scientific research. It is noted that the VAMDC Consortium strongly advocates that authors of research papers using data cite the original experimental and theoretical papers as well as the relevant databases.

Techniques for producing cold and ultracold molecules are enabling the study of chemical reactions and scattering at the quantum scattering limit, with only a few partial waves contributing to the incident channel, leading to the observation and even full control of state-to-state collisions in this regime. A new R-matrix formalism is presented for tackling problems involving low- and ultra-low energy collisions. This general formalism is particularly appropriate for slow collisions occurring on potential energy surfaces with deep wells. The many resonance states make such systems hard to treat theoretically but offer the best prospects for novel physics: resonances are already being widely used to control diatomic systems and should provide the route to steering ultracold reactions. Our R-matrix-based formalism builds on the progress made in variational calculations of molecular spectra by using these methods to provide wavefunctions for the whole system at short internuclear distances, (a regime known as the inner region). These wavefunctions are used to construct collision energy-dependent R-matrices which can then be propagated to give cross sections at each collision energy. The method is formulated for ultracold collision systems with differing numbers of atoms.

The ExoMol database (www.exomol.com) provides extensive line lists of molecular transitions which are valid over extended temperature ranges. The status of the current release of the database is reviewed and a new data structure is specified. This structure augments the provision of energy levels (and hence transition frequencies) and Einstein A coefficients with other key properties, including lifetimes of individual states, temperature-dependent cooling functions, Landé g-factors, partition functions, cross sections, k-coefficients and transition dipoles with phase relations. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of pressure broadening parameters. The new data structure includes a definition file which provides the necessary information for utilities accessing ExoMol through its application programming interface (API). Prospects for the inclusion of new species into the database are discussed.

Accurate knowledge of the rovibronic near-infrared and visible spectra of vanadium monoxide (VO) is very important for studies of cool stellar and hot planetary atmospheres. Here, the required ab initio dipole moment and spin-orbit coupling curves for VO are produced. This data forms the basis of a new VO line list considering 13 different electronic states and containing over 277 million transitions. Open shell transition, metal diatomics are challenging species to model through ab initio quantum mechanics due to the large number of low-lying electronic states, significant spin–orbit coupling and strong static and dynamic electron correlation. Multi-reference configuration interaction methodologies using orbitals from a complete active space self-consistent-field (CASSCF) calculation are the standard technique for these systems. We use different state-specific or minimal-state CASSCF orbitals for each electronic state to maximise the calculation accuracy. The off-diagonal dipole moment controls the intensity of electronic transitions. We test finite-field off-diagonal dipole moments, but found that (1) the accuracy of the excitation energies were not sufficient to allow accurate dipole moments to be evaluated and (2) computer time requirements for perpendicular transitions were prohibitive. The best off-diagonal dipole moments are calculated using wavefunctions with different CASSCF orbitals.

The GEISA database (Gestion et Etude des Informations Spectroscopiques Atmospheriques: Management and Study of Atmospheric Spectroscopic Information) has been developed and maintained by the ARA/ABC(t) group at LMD since 1974. GEISA is constantly evolving, taking into account the best available spectroscopic data. This paper presents the 2015 release of GEISA (GEISA-2015), which updates the last edition of 2011 and celebrates the 40th anniversary of the database. Significant updates and additions have been implemented in the three following independent databases of GEISA. The line parameters database contains 52 molecular species (118 isotopologues) and transitions in the spectral range from 10(-6) to 35,877.031 cm(-1), representing 5,067,351 entries, against 3,794,297 in GEISA-2011. Among the previously existing molecules, 20 molecular species have been updated. A new molecule (SO3) has been added. HDO, isotopologue of H2O, is now identified as an independent molecular species. Seven new isotopologues have been added to the GEISA-2015 database. The cross section sub-database has been enriched by the addition of 43 new molecular species in its infrared part, 4 molecules (ethane, propane, acetone, acetonitrile) are also updated; they represent 3% of the update. A new section is added, in the near-infrared spectral region, involving 7 molecular species: CH3CN, CH3I, CH3O2, H2CO, HO2, HONO, NH3. The microphysical and optical properties of atmospheric aerosols sub-database has been updated for the first time since 2003. It contains more than 40 species originating from NCAR and 20 from the ARIA archive of Oxford University. As for the previous versions, this new release of GEISA and associated management software facilities are implemented and freely accessible on the AERIS/ESPRI atmospheric chemistry data center website. Chemical models used to study the chemical composition of the gas and the ices in the interstellar medium are based on a network of chemical reactions and associated rate coefficients. These reactions and rate coefficients are partially compiled from data in the literature, when available. We present in this paper kida.uva.2014, a new updated version of the kida.uva public gas-phase network first released in 2012. In addition to a description of the many specific updates, we illustrate changes in the predicted abundances of molecules for cold dense cloud conditions as compared with the results of the previous version of our network, kida.uva.2011., AuthorCount:24

The latest molecular data—potential energy curves and Rydberg/valence interactions—characterizing the super-excited electronic states of CO are reviewed, in order to provide inputs for the study of their fragmentation dynamics. Starting from this input, the main paths and mechanisms for CO+ dissociative recombination are analyzed; its cross sections are computed using a method based on multichannel quantum defect theory. Convoluted cross sections, giving both isotropic and anisotropic Maxwellian rate coefficients, are compared with merged-beam and storage-ring xperimental results. The calculated cross sections underestimate the measured ones by a factor of two, but display a very similar resonant shape. These facts confirm the quality of our approach for the dynamics, and call for more accurate and more extensive molecular structure calculations. We report the analysis of two new spectroscopic observations of the super-Earth 55 Cancri e, in the near infrared, obtained with the WFC3 camera onboard the HST. 55 Cancri e orbits so close to its parent star, that temperatures much higher than 2000 K are expected on its surface. Given the brightness of 55 Cancri, the observations were obtained in scanning mode, adopting a very long scanning length and a very high scanning speed. We use our specialized pipeline to take into account systematics introduced by these observational parameters when coupled with the geometrical distortions of the instrument. We measure the transit depth per wavelength channel with an average relative uncertainty of 22 ppm per visit and find modulations that depart from a straight line model with a 6$\sigma$ confidence level. These results suggest that 55 Cancri e is surrounded by an atmosphere, which is probably hydrogen-rich. Our fully Bayesian spectral retrieval code, T-REx, has identified HCN to be the most likely molecular candidate able to explain the features at 1.42 and 1.54 $\mu$m. While additional spectroscopic observations in a broader wavelength range in the infrared will be needed to confirm the HCN detection, we discuss here the implications of such result. Our chemical model, developed with combustion specialists, indicates that relatively high mixing ratios of HCN may be caused by a high C/O ratio.
