Understanding the resilience of temperate reefs to climate change requires exploring the recovery capacity of their habitat-forming species from recurrent marine heatwaves (MHWs). Here, we show that, in a Mediterranean highly enforced marine protected area established more than 40 years ago, habitat-forming octocoral populations that were first affected by a severe MHW in 2003 have not recovered after 15 years. Contrarily, they have followed collapse trajectories that have brought them to the brink of local ecological extinction. Since 2003, impacted populations of the red gorgonian Paramuricea clavata (Risso, 1826) and the red coral Corallium rubrum (Linnaeus, 1758) have followed different trends in terms of size structure, but a similar progressive reduction in density and biomass. Concurrently, recurrent MHWs were observed in the area during the 2003–2018 study period, which may have hindered populations recovery. The studied octocorals play a unique habitat-forming role in the coralligenous assemblages (i.e. reefs endemic to the Mediterranean Sea home to approximately 10% of its species). Therefore, our results underpin the great risk that recurrent MHWs pose for the long-term integrity and functioning of these emblematic temperate reefs.

Climate change is rapidly altering the distributions of species and the composition of communities that have evolved over evolutionary time scales. Quantifying changes in species distributions and abundance in response to warming is critical to understanding how these changes modify structure, function and services provided by recipient communities. Changes in size structure of warm- and cool-affiliated species is an important indicator for climate-driven species redistributions over time, and has received relatively little attention. We quantified changes in length and biomass distributions of 25 species of Labridae fishes from 112 sites spanning 2000 km across a warm-cool temperate transition zone in south Western Australia. Length and biomass data were collected in 2005-2006 and 2014-2015 using diver operated stereo-video. In the decade between sampling events, south Western Australia experienced an extreme marine heatwave followed by repeated summers of anomalously warm ocean temperatures. Biomass of tropical and subtropical species increased 10-fold and 3-fold, respectively, between 2006 and 2015, whereas temperate species biomass remained relatively stable. In 2014-2015, the abundance and biomass of tropical species (e.g. Scarus ghobban) increased in the warmest regions and established multiple size classes poleward of their recorded 2005-2006 distributions, suggesting successful overwintering and recruitment where viable populations were not recorded in 2005-2006. Large, slow-growing temperate species such as Achoerodus gouldii and Bodianus frenchii decreased in small and medium size classes in warm regions. Our findings report a substantial change in the size structure and composition of labrid assemblages over a decade of climatic variability.

Mediterranean gorgonians are foundation species that support the high diversity associated with Mediterranean coralligenous assemblages. Through the formation of 3D structures, they provide structural complexity and thereby habitat and refugia to numerous associated species, among other ecological benefits. However, these organisms are especially vulnerable to the increasingly frequent and intense marine heatwaves (MHWs). In recent decades, MHWs deeply impacted octocoral species such as the red coral Corallium rubrum and the red gorgonian Paramuricea clavata across large geographical scales, leading to mass mortality events (MMEs). Although the MME immediate and mid-term (3-4 years) effects on the population dynamics of these species are well documented, a long-term evaluation of the impacted populations trajectories is still lacking. This hinders our understanding of the recovery capacity of these key species, and thus ofthe potential delayed effects that MMEs could have on their associated communities. In this study, we performed a long-term status assessment of different populations of P. clavata and C. rubrum that were affected by the MME occurred in the summer of 2003in Scandola Marine Protected Area (MPA), Corsica. Our results show that since 2003, impacted populations have followed different trajectories in terms of density, size structure or tissue necrosis, but a general progressive reduction in biomass. This indicates that the affected populations have no recovered over almost two decades, despite the high protection regime existing in the MPA. Furthermore, many populations followed collapse trajectories that have brought them to the brink of ecological extinction, probably due to the MHW recurrence observed since 2003. Predators exert a strong influence on ecological communities by reducing the abundance of prey (consumptive effects) and shaping their foraging behavior (non-consumptive effects). Although the prevalence of trophic cascades triggered by non-consumptive effects is increasingly recognized in a wide range of ecosystems, how its relative strength changes as prey individuals grow in size along various life stages remains poorly resolved. We investigated how the effects of predators vary with the ontogeny of a key herbivorous sea urchin, which is responsible for transforming diverse macroalgal forests to a barren state dominated by bare rock and encrusting coralline algae. We conducted a series of field and laboratory experiments to determine how susceptibility to predation, prey behavioral responses, and grazing impact on algal cover vary with sea urchin size. The consumptive effects of predators were greater on smaller sea urchin size classes, which were more susceptible to predation. Unexpectedly however, predator non-consumptive effects acted only on larger sea urchins, significantly reducing their grazing activity in the presence of predator cues. Crucially, only these larger sea urchins were capable of overgrazing macroalgae in the field, with non-consumptive effects reducing sea urchin foraging activity and macroalgal grazing impact by 60%. The decoupling between risk and fear as prey grow indicates that the strength of consumptive and non-consumptive trophic cascades may act differently at different ontogenetic stages of prey. While the consumptive effects of predators directly influence population numbers, the consequences of non-consumptive effects may far outlive consumptive effects as prey grow, finding refuge in size, but not from fear.

Climate change threatens coastal benthic communities on a global scale. However, the potential effects of ongoing warming on mesophotic temperate reefs at the community level remain poorly understood. Investigating how different members of these communities will respond to the future expected environmental conditions is, therefore, key to anticipating their future trajectories and developing specific management and conservation strategies. Here, we examined the responses of some of the main components of the highly diverse Mediterranean coralligenous assemblages to thermal stress. We performed thermotolerance experiments with different temperature treatments (from 26 to 29°C) with 10 species from different phyla (three anthozoans, six sponges and one ascidian) and different structural roles. Overall, we observed species‐specific contrasting responses to warming regardless of phyla or growth form. Moreover, the responses ranged from highly resistant species to sensitive species and were mostly in agreement with previous field observations from mass mortality events (MMEs) linked to Mediterranean marine heat waves. Our results unravel the diversity of responses to warming in coralligenous outcrops and suggest the presence of potential winners and losers in the face of climate change. Finally, this study highlights the importance of accounting for species‐specific vulnerabilities and response diversity when forecasting the future trajectories of temperate benthic communities in a warming ocean.

Sea urchins, ecologically important herbivores of shallow subtidal temperate reefs, are considered particularly threatened in a future ocean acidification scenario, since their carbonate structures (skeleton and grazing apparatus) are made up of the very soluble high-magnesium calcite, particularly sensitive to a decrease in pH. The biomechanical properties of their skeletal structures are of great importance for their individual fitness, because the skeleton provides the means for locomotion, grazing and protection from predators. Sea urchin skeleton is composed of discrete calcite plates attached to each other at sutures by organic ligaments. The present study addressed the fate of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus (Lamarck, 1816) skeleton in acidified oceans, taking into account the combined effect of reduced pH and macroalgal diet, with potential cascading consequences at the ecosystem level. A breaking test on individual plates of juvenile specimens fed different macroalgal diets has been performed, teasing apart plate strength and stiffness from general robustness. Results showed no direct short-term effect of a decrease in seawater pH nor of the macroalgal diet on single plate mechanical properties. Nevertheless, results from apical plates, the ones presumably formed during the experimental period, provided an indication of a possible diet-mediated response, with sea urchins fed the more calcified macroalga sustaining higher forces before breakage than the one fed the non-calcified algae. Kelp forests represent some of the most productive and diverse habitats on Earth. Understanding drivers of ecological patterns at large spatial scales is critical for effective management and conservation of marine habitats. We surveyed kelp forests dominated by Laminaria hyperborea (Gunnerus) Foslie 1884 across 9° latitude and >1000 km of coastline and measured a number of physical parameters at multiple scales to link ecological structure and standing stock of carbon with environmental variables. Kelp density, biomass, morphology and age were generally greater in exposed sites within regions, highlighting the importance of wave exposure in structuring L. hyperborea populations. At the regional scale, wave-exposed kelp canopies in the cooler regions (the north and west of Scotland) were greater in biomass, height and age than in warmer regions (southwest Wales and England). The range and maximal values of estimated standing stock of carbon contained within kelp forests was greater than in historical studies, suggesting that this ecosystem property may have been previously undervalued. Kelp canopy density was positively correlated with large-scale wave fetch and fine-scale water motion, whereas kelp canopy biomass and the standing stock of carbon were positively correlated with large-scale wave fetch and light levels and negatively correlated with temperature. As light availability and summer temperature were important drivers of kelp forest biomass, effective management of human activities that may affect coastal water quality is necessary to maintain ecosystem functioning, while increased temperatures related to anthropogenic climate change may impact the structure of kelp forests and the ecosystem services they provide.

Baited remote underwater video systems are becoming a widely adopted tool for sampling fish assemblages. One of the outstanding knowledge gaps associated with this technique is the effect of different quantities of bait on the fish assemblages sampled. We investigated how different quantities of bait (0 g, 200 g, 1000 g or 2000 g of crushed pilchards, Sardinops sagax) influenced the relative abundance and species richness of a temperate, Western Australian reef fish assemblage sampled with baited remote underwater stereo-video systems (stereo-BRUVs). The presence of bait significantly increased the relative abundance and numbers of fish species sampled, with few differences between the three quantities of bait. Trends in fork length were identified between bait quantities for some species. For example, juvenile stage Coris auricularis (a protogynous labrid) were significantly larger in the unbaited treatment,whereas males of the same specieswere significantly smaller at unbaited treatments. This pattern was interpreted as being the result of intraspecific competition and the dominance of larger males in the presence of bait. When bait was present, fish were significantly closer to the stereo-BRUVs. However, there was again no difference between the three baited treatments.At this location in temperateWestern Australia, stereo-BRUVs with 200 g of bait are as effective at sampling the temperate reef fish assemblage as stereo-BRUVs set with greater quantities of bait. In our study, the numbers of high trophic level species recorded were low. In areas with abundant high trophic level fishes, such as tropical reef systems, greater quantities of bait may be required to prevent it being quickly depleted by intense feeding.

Many studies that test for spatial patterns in fish assemblages do not have temporal replication, and where they do, the scale of this replication is in the order of seasons or years. Rarely are patterns tested at the scale of days or time of day. As a result, any descriptions of spatial patterns are potentially confounded by within or between day variations, with differences between locations possibly due to the differences between times sampled. This study aimed to determine whether significant short-term temporal variability existed within and between days in a temperate, shallow-water reef fish assemblage in south-western Australia. Three sites were sampled at morning, midday and afternoon for five consecutive days using baited remote underwater stereo–video systems. Significant differences were detected in the fish assemblage at different times of the day with morning and midday assemblages different from afternoon assemblages. Differences were detected between days with a significant shift in the assemblage after day two. The use of bait in this study was thought to influence the behaviour of Pseudocaranx spp. which furthermore influenced sampling of the entire fish assemblage between days. This study shows that large scale monitoring and sampling programmes using baited cameras need to consider the possible influence of within and between day variability in their experimental designs and must carefully design sampling to test for spatial and temporal structures in fish assemblages.
