Eliminating the uncontrolled growth of Li dendrite inside solid electrolytes is a critical tactic for the performance improvement of all-solid-state Li batteries (ASSLBs). Herein, a strategy to swallow and anchor Li dendrites by filling Si nanoparticles into the solid electrolytes by the lithiation effect with Li dendrites is proposed. It is found that Si nanoparticles can lithiate with the adjacent Li dendrites which have a strong electron transport ability. Such effect can inhibit the formation of Li dendrites at the interface of Li anode, and also swallow the tip Li inside the solid electrolytes, and thus inhibiting its longitudinal growth and avoiding the solid electrolyte puncturing. As a proof of concept, a novel sandwich-structure solid electrolyte of Li6.7La3Zr2Al0.1O12 (LLZA)-PEO/Si-PEO electrolyte/ (LLZA)-PEO with asymmetrical structure is first constructed and demonstrated stable Li plating/stripping over 1800 h and remarkably improved cycling stability in Li/LiFePO4 cells with a reversible capacity of 111.9 mAh g(-1) at 1 C after 150 cycles. The proof of lithiation of Si-PEO electrolyte in the interlayer is also verified. Furthermore, the pouch cell thus prepared exhibits comparable cyclic stability and is allowable for folding and cutting, suggesting its promising application in ASSLBs by this simple and efficient strategy.

All-solid-state Li-metal batteries (ASSLBs) are highly desirable, due to their inherent safety and high energy density; however, the irregular and uncontrolled growth of Li filaments is detrimental to interfacial stability and safety. Herein, we report on the incorporation of piezo-/ferroelectric BaTiO 3 (BTO) nanofibers into solid electrolytes and determination of electric-field distribution due to BTO inclusion that effectively regulates the nucleation and growth of Li dendrites. Theoretical simulations predict that the piezoelectric effect of BTO embedded in solid electrolyte reduces the driving force of dendrite growth at high curvatures, while its ferroelectricity reduces the overpotential, which helps to regularize Li deposition and Li + flux. Polarization reversal of soft solid electrolytes was identified, confirming a regular deposition and morphology alteration of Li. As expected, the ASSLBs operating with LiFePO 4 /Li and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/garnet solid electrolyte containing 10% BTO additive showed a steady and long cycle life with a reversible capacity of 103.2 mAh g −1 over 500 cycles at 1 C. Furthermore, the comparable cyclability and flexibility of the scalable pouch cells prepared and the successful validation in the sulfide electrolytes, demonstrating its universal and promising application for the integration of Li metal anodes in solid-state batteries.

We report the molecular, genetic and functional analysis of a case of thrombasthenic phenotype. The proband showed absence of platelet glycoprotein (GP)IIb and very low content of GPIIIa, and both his parents showed a marked reduction in the levels of platelet GPIIb-IIIa. Single-stranded conformational polymorphism-polymerase chain reaction (SSCP-PCR) analysis and direct sequencing of PCR-amplified GPIIb exon-12 revealed the presence of a G→A transition at position 1063 with the expected substitution of glutamate 324 with lysine (K). This mutation did not alter the level of GPIIb mRNA. Co-expression of normal or mutant [324K] GPIIb with normal human GPIIIa in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells failed to show surface exposure of [324K]GPIIb-IIIa complexes. Pulse-chase and immunoprecipitation analysis demonstrated that [324K]GPIIb cDNA was translated into proGPIIb, but neither mutant GPIIb heavy chain (GPIIbH) nor [324K]GPIIb-GPIIIa complexes were detected, suggesting that this mutation is the underlying molecular basis for the thrombasthenic phenotype. Mutation analysis demonstrated that 324E of GPIIb could be replaced by other negatively charged or polar amino acids (AAs) without impairing the surface expression of GPIIb-IIIa. However, substitution of 324E of GPIIb for a positively charged AA other than K prevented the expression of GPIIb-IIIa complexes. These observations suggest that a domain encompassing 324E of GPIIb is essential for heterodimerization with GPIIIa and its substitution for a positively charged residue precludes normal subunit association

This work reports the molecular genetic analysis of two patients who suffer mucocutaneous haemorrhages, prolonged bleeding time and failure of platelets to aggregate, either spontaneously or in response to agonists. The absence of platelet surface glycoprotein (GP)IIb–IIIa complexes confirmed the clinical diagnosis of Glanzmann's thrombasthenia (GT). Polymerase chain reaction single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) analysis of exon 2 of GPIIb showed polymorphic bands caused by the homozygous deletion of a cytosine at position 288 relative to the translation start site, causing a shifting of the reading frame and appearance of a premature termination codon. The heterozygous relatives showed a reduced platelet content of GPIIb–IIIa, and a correlation was found between the levels of GPIIb mRNA and surface expression of GPIIb–IIIa complexes. Unlike other mRNAs carrying a nonsense mutation, (288Cdel)GPIIb does not force alternative splicing of GPIIb mRNA. As expected, co-transfection of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells with cDNAs encoding GPIIIa and (288delC)GPIIb failed to enhance the surface exposure of GPIIIa. It is concluded that the (288delC)GPIIb mutation is responsible for the thrombasthenic phenotype of the patients. In addition, it has also been determined that heterodimerization of GPIIb–IIIa requires the integrity of exons 2 and 3 of GPIIb

Photo-rechargeable batteries represent a synergistic concept that integrates both energy harvesting and energy storage modalities based on dual-functional materials. Electrospun vanadium oxide nanofibers (VNFs) seamlessly coated with conductive carbon (VNF-C-120) as dual-action cathode materials for photo-rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are reported. The materials deliver a high discharge capacity of 160 mAh g(-1), which could be increased up to 184 mAh g(-1) (C rate of 0.75) under light illumination that confirmed the photoresponsive behavior. Long-term stability tests (300 cycles at 0.75C) and the post-mortem analysis show that besides being a conductive sheath, the carbon coating is also essential in retaining the structural and morphological stability of V2O5 fibers, which was manifested in a higher capacity retention upon cycling compared to the non-carbon-coated VNF (43.85% capacity retention VNF and 61.13% capacity retention for VNF-C-120 after 300 cycles). In contrast, the pristine VNF electrode cannot reach 400 cycles, due to the failure of the cell, which, however, is prevented in cells operating with carbon-coated electrodes. Further, the photo-rechargeability of the cell is demonstrated under a UV lamp that delivered an overall conversion efficiency of 4.24% for VNF and 5.07% for the VNF-C-120.
