A new sesquiterpene, capgermacrene H (1) was isolated together with 7 other compounds, capgermacrenes A-G (2-8), from a population of soft coral Capnella imbricata collected from Mantanani Island, Sabah, Malaysia. The structure of this metabolite was elucidated based on spectroscopic data such as nuclear magnetic resonance and high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Capgermacrene A (2) showed potent cytotoxicity against adult T-cell leukemia, S1T cells at half-maximal inhibitory concentration of 0.79 µg/mL.

Polyamines such as spermidine (Spd) and spermine (Spm), produced by aminopropyltransferase (Apt), play roles in cell growth and differentiation. A sensitive and simple fluorometric high-performance liquid chromatographic determination for Apt activity of spermidine synthase (Spdsyn) and spermine synthase (Spmsyn) was developed in order to examine cellular functions of polyamine synthesis. The derivatization procedure for methylthioadenosine (MTA) produced from decarboxylated S-adenosylmethionine by Apt was the reaction with 2-chloroacetaldehyde to give fluorescent 1, N6-etheno methylthioadenosine. The reaction conditions for derivatization were optimized. A calibration curve was established, ranging from 0.01 to 25 pmol. Quantification of derivatized MTA was confirmed to be identical to Spd or Spm production. The developed method determined Spdsyn and Spmsyn activities in HepG2 cells treated with oleic acid as a cellular lipid accumulation model.

A new brominated diterpene, 10-acetoxyangasiol (1), and four other known metabolites, aplysidiol (2), cupalaurenol (3), 1-methyl-2,3,5-tribromoindole (4), and chamigrane epoxide (5), were isolated and identified. Isolated metabolites exhibited potent antibacterial activities against clinical bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus pyogenes, Salmonella sp. and Vibrio cholerae. © 2010 by the authors; licensee MDPI.

As part of our continuous interest in the presence of secondary metabolites in marine organisms of Borneo, we investigated the chemical constituents of the soft corals of the genus Nephthea. Four secondary metabolites were isolated from the organic extracts of three Borneon soft corals Nephthea species and these compounds were identified as 24-methylenecholesterol (1), 5ß,8ß-epidioxy-11-hydroxy-6-eudesmene (2), 5ß,8ß- epidioxy-11-hydroperoxy-6-eudesmene(3)and24-methyl-cholesta-5,24(28) -diene-3ß,19-diol-7ß-monoace tate (4). Their structures were established by NMR spectroscopic data analysis and comparison of the data with those of the literature.

Five essential oils and eight extracts of common spices were screened and evaluated for repellent activity against adults of the rice weevil, Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.), using the modified filter paper impregnation method. Both extracts of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) and essential oils of gingers, Etlingera elatior, E. pyramidosphaera and Zingiber officinale, showed strong repellent activity against S. zeamis at 20 mg/ml. Cinnamon methanol extract exhibited potent repellent activity at the concentration of 10 mg/ml. Extracts of turmeric (Curcuma longa) and black pepper (Piper nigrum) showed moderate repellent activity at 20 or 50 mg/ml. However, extracts of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and dry chili (Capsicum annuum) exhibited weak attractant activity. The findings from this research demonstrate the possible use of these spices as repellent of rice weevil in stored products.

A new 4 alpha-methyl sterol, 4 alpha-methyl-ergosta-6,8(14),22E-triene-3 beta-ol (1), was isolated along with cholesterol from a Nephthea sp. Bornean soft coral. The structure of compound 1 was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis and comparison of the data with those of the related compounds.

A new germacrane-type norsesquiterpenoid, 1-acetoxy-germacra-5E,10(14)- diene-4-one (1), as well as three known compounds, were isolated from the organic extracts of a Bornean soft coral Nephthea sp. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data analysis.
