This paper considers a single-cell massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) system with dual-polarized antennas at both the base station and users. We study a channel model that includes the key practical aspects that arise when utilizing dual-polarization: channel cross-polar discrimination (XPD) and cross-polar correlations (XPC) at the transmitter and receiver. We derive the achievable uplink and downlink spectral efficiencies (SE) with and without successive interference cancellation (SIC) when using the linear minimum mean squared error (MMSE), zero-forcing (ZF), and maximum ratio (MR) combining/precoding schemes. The expressions depend on the statistical properties of the MMSE channel estimator obtained for the dual-polarized channel model. Closed-form uplink and downlink SE expressions for MR combining/precoding are derived. Using these expressions, we propose power-control algorithms that maximize the uplink and downlink sum SEs under uncorrelated fading but can be used to enhance performance also with correlated fading. We compare the SEs achieved in dual-polarized and uni-polarized setups numerically and evaluate the impact of XPD and XPC conditions. The simulations reveal that dual-polarized setups achieve 40-60% higher SEs and the gains remain also under severe XPD and XPC. Active reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have recently been proposed to complement and generalize passive RIS. In this work, the design for an active RIS based on phase-reconfigurable reflection amplifiers is proposed. The proposed active RIS elements’ design consists of a two-layer patch antenna and a phase-reconfigurable reflection amplifier that is realized by a cascade of a phase shifter and a reflection amplifier. Theoretical and numerical analyses are used to quantify key parameters that need to be met in the design of the reflection amplifier and phase shifters. These show that a tradeoff between the reflection amplifier’s gain and the phase shifter’s return and insertion loss is required to be balanced to obtain a stable and effective overall design. In particular, a reflection amplifier with about 13-dB gain and a 2-bit phase shifter with only about 1.9-dB insertion loss and $-$ 25-dB return loss are designed. The final RIS element obtains 8.5-dB gain with four reconfigurable phases ranging from 0 $^{\circ}$ to 360 $^{\circ}$ with small root mean square (rms) gain and phase errors. An active RIS can be constructed by concatenating these elements together, and an efficient analytical method to calculate the scattered pattern by the active RIS is also proposed. A novel beamspace multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission system using a single-radio-frequency (RF) electronically steerable parasitic array radiator (ESPAR) is described. It makes use of recent results for decomposing the patterns of any arbitrary ESPAR onto an orthogonal basis set using the Theory of Characteristic Modes (TCM). Leveraging this decomposition, OFDM symbols can be mapped into the beamspace domain so that the ESPAR can be used to transmit multiple streams of OFDM symbols using a single RF chain. In the proposed approach, we use the Linde-Buzo-Gray (LBG) algorithm to quantize the OFDM symbol vectors and form a codebook. A binary search tree is then utilized to efficiently find the reactive loads of ESPAR to excite the radiation patterns corresponding to the quantized symbols. It is shown by simulation that quantized codewords and the corresponding radiation patterns can be excited using ESPAR. In addition, the simulated bit error rate (BER) results of the proposed approach are shown to be close to that of conventional MIMO-OFDM systems, demonstrating the effectiveness of implementing a single-RF MIMO-OFDM transmitter. Intra-cortical extracellular neural sensing is being rapidly and widely applied in several clinical research and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), as the number of sensing channels continues to double every 6 years. By distributing multiple high-density extracellular micro-electrode arrays (MEAs) in vivo across the brain, each with 1000's of sensing channels, neuroscientists have begun to map the correlation of neuronal activity across different brain regions, with single-neuron precision [1]. Since each neural sensing channel typically samples at 20 to 50kS/s with a > 10b ADC, multiple MEAs demand a data transfer rate up to Gb/s [2]. However, these BCIs are severely hindered in many clinical uses due to the lack of a high-data-rate and miniature-wireless-telemetry solution that can be implanted below the scalp, i.e., transcutaneously (Fig. 24.2.1). The area of the wireless telemetry module should be miniaturized to ~3cm2 due to neurosurgical implantation constraints. A transmission range up to 10cm is highly desirable, in order to improve the reliability of the wireless link against e.g., antenna misalignment, etc. Finally, the power consumption of the wireless telemetry should be limited to ~10mW to minimize thermal flux from the module's surface area, avoiding excessive tissue heating. Most of the conventional transcutaneous wireless telemetry systems adopt inductive coupling, but the data-rate is limited to a few Mb/s. A near-infrared (NIR) optical transcutaneous TX using a vertical-cavity-surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) [2] demonstrated a data-rate up to 300Mb/s but suffers from a limited transmission range (4mm) and requires a sub-mm precise alignment between the implant TX and a wearable RX. The introduction of space-time block code (STBC) can efficiently increase the diversity of original spatial modulation (SM). However, the spectral efficiency of STBC will be reduced gradually with the increase of the transmit antennas. In this contribution, we conceive a novel quasi-orthogonal space-time block coded spatial modulation (QOSTBC-SM) design for multiple-input and multiple-out (MIMO) transmission by reaping their respective benefits, while improving the spectral efficiency compared to conventional space-time block coded spatial modulation (STBC-SM). More specifically, in the proposed QOSTBC-SM structure, the information bits are conveyed via the active antenna index, as well as the QOSTBC blocks at the transmitter, while at the receiver, a low-complexity detection scheme is proposed. Furthermore, a closed-form union bound of the bit error rate (BER) is also quantified by theoretical derivation. With the arrival of the Internet-of-Things era, IoT devices and the services built on them make our lives more convenient and also raise public concerns on their vulnerability to attacks. Recent literature advocates physical-layer solutions to help IoT devices detect attacks instead of using sophisticated cryptographic methods. However, there is still no satisfying solutions for IoT devices with single antenna and sparse traffic. Thus, we introduce SecurePilot to fill this gap. SecurePilot is an unsupervised and plug-and-play solution which works without an attacker';s knowledge in advance. It leverages the strengths of two orthogonal physical-layer information, propagation signatures and device signatures embedded in pilot signals to enable effective attack detection. It could work on single-antenna IoT devices with sparse traffic and also work compatibly with communication protocols. The experimental results show that SecurePilot can successfully detect 99.6% of attacks, triggering false alarms on 3.1% of legitimate traffic in a typical office environment.

This paper studies the robust beamforming design for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT)-enabled networks, where the rate-splitting (RS) scheme and the power-splitting (PS) energy harvesting (EH) receiver are adopted for secure information transfer and EH, respectively. In order to explore the worst-case energy efficiency (EE) performance limit of the system, an EE maximization problem is formulated with the elliptically bounded channel state information error model under the constraints of the quality of service (QoS) requirements of information decoding users, the EH requirements of EH users and the power budget at the transmitter. To tackle the formulated non-convex problem, a sequential minimal optimization-based algorithm is first proposed to construct a mapping table and the optimal PS ratios of the PS EH receiver are found by searching the table. Then, a dual-layer iterative algorithm is designed to obtain the maximal EE based on the Dinkelbach’s method in the inner loop and the successive convex approximation method in the outer loop. To accelerate the convergence of the outer loop, an efficient initialization algorithm is also designed. Simulation results show that the RS scheme contributes to the EE enhancement, and the PS EH receiver enlarges the rate-energy region restricted by the non-linear EH circuit. Moreover, traditional sum-rate maximization design and power minimization design may induce a notable worst-case EE performance loss at the high-power region and the low-QoS requirement region, respectively. However, developing straightforward and tractable electromagnetic models that are suitable for RIS aided communication modeling remains an open issue. In this paper, we address this issue and derive communication models by using rigorous scattering parameter network analysis. We also propose new RIS architectures based on group and fully connected reconfigurable impedance networks that can adjust not only the phases but also the magnitudes of the impinging waves, which are more general and more efficient than conventional single connected reconfigurable impedance network that only adjusts the phases of the impinging waves. In addition, the scaling law of the received signal power of an RIS aided system with reconfigurable impedance networks is also derived. Compared with the single connected reconfigurable impedance network, our group and fully connected reconfigurable impedance network can increase the received signal power by up to 62%, or maintain the same received signal power with a number of RIS elements reduced by up to 21%. We also investigate the proposed architecture in deployments with distance-dependent pathloss and Rician fading channel, and show that the proposed group and fully connected reconfigurable impedance networks outperform the single connected case by up to 34% and 48%, respectively.

Lower efficiencies of power amplifiers and increased path losses at higher frequencies are two reasons why utilizing millimeter-wave frequencies for future wireless communications is challenging. In this article, a high-gain multilens-horn antenna system is presented. The antenna system provides highly effective isotropic radiated power by using only a few high-gain antenna elements, where each element only needs a low transmit power of 26 dBm to reach users at far distances. Moreover, due to channel reciprocity, both down- and uplink benefit from an increased antenna gain. It is shown that a reasonable number of high-gain antennas can provide coverage in a 60° sector with an inter-site distance of 300 m. Based on radio-planning simulations, three horn shapes are identified to provide sufficient coverage. The final optimized dual-polarized multilens-horn design is fabricated and experimentally verified. With a low transmit power at the base station (BS) of 26 dBm, a signal strength of at least -65 dBm is achieved in 98.9% of the sector at 28 GHz under non-line-of-sight conditions for the vertical polarization. For the horizontal polarization, an area of 96.2% is covered.

This paper considers the secrecy performance of several schemes for multi-antenna transmission to single-antenna users with full-duplex (FD) capability against randomly distributed single-antenna eavesdroppers (EDs). These schemes and related scenarios include transmit antenna selection (TAS), transmit antenna beamforming (TAB), artificial noise (AN) from the transmitter, user selection based their distances to the transmitter, and colluding and non-colluding EDs. The locations of randomly distributed EDs and users are assumed to be distributed as Poisson Point Process (PPP). We derive closed form expressions for the secrecy outage probabilities (SOP) of all these schemes and scenarios. The derived expressions are useful to reveal the impacts of various environmental parameters and user's choices on the SOP, and hence useful for network design purposes. Examples of such numerical results are discussed.

Fixed-beam, high-gain antenna systems can be used for a finer partitioning of the currently used cell-sectoring. This partitioning has the benefit of reducing the number of users seen per antenna beam, which reduces interference. Furthermore, the high antenna gain allows for a high effective isotropic radiated power while keeping the transmit power low. In this paper, we study the performance of such a fixed-beam, high gain antenna system design for millimeter-wave mobile communications. The antenna system is designed to keep the inter-sector interference in a multi-site scenario low. The performance is analyzed for single- and multi-user environments. In single-input single-output mode, the 50th percentile of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio lies between 12.5 dB to 39.7 dB if 3 to 0 interferers are present, respectively. For multiple-input multiple-output transmission using zero-forcing, the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio increases and the 50th percentile ranges from 36.1 dB to 43.3 dB if 3 to 0 interferes are present, respectively. By using maximum ratio transmission, the best performance is achieved with no interferers present, while a plunge in performance is observed with interferers. Furthermore, the study revealed that the narrow beam antenna system can also provide a clear signal separation for small spatial separations. In the given example, the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio is larger than 32.1 dB with 11 active antenna elements, where 2.8 meters separate the users. Hence, the paper shows that the cell-partitioning antenna systems provide coverage in the desired area while keeping the inter-sector interference low, and the considered transmission techniques can be used for situation optimized mobile communication links.

In this paper, the idea of offset spatial modulation (OSM) is integrated with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), toward an efficient design to bridge their advantages. Compared to its conventional counterpart as spatial modulation (SM)-OFDM, the proposed OSM-OFDM scheme aims at providing a simplified implementation structure with less number of radio frequency (RF) chains, by introducing an offset between the RF chain and the index of the activated transmit antenna on each subcarrier. Specifically, three types of offset antenna selection (OAS) methods are developed to meet different scene requirements for different number of available RF chains. Furthermore, through theoretical analysis, we quantify the bit error rate upper bounds of OSM-OFDM with different types of OAS methods. Finally, extensive computer simulations demonstrate that OSM-OFDM provides a flexible tradeoff among implementation cost, computation complexity and error performance., QC 20211005

In this paper, we propose a method of improving the channel estimates for non-coherent multi-antenna terminals, which are terminals that cannot control the relative phase between its antenna ports, with channels that can be considered constant over multiple time slots. The terminals have multiple antennas and are free to choose whichever antenna they want to use in each time slot. An unknown phase shift is introduced in each time slot as we cannot guarantee that the terminals are phase coherent across time slots. We compare three different clustering techniques that we use to detect the active antenna. We also compare a set of different statistical and heuristic estimators for the channels and the phase shifts. We evaluate the methods by using correlated Rayleigh fading and three different bounds on the uplink capacity. The accuracy of the capacity bounds are verified with bit-error-rate simulations. Anti-eavesdropping channel estimation (ANECE) is a method that uses specially designed pilot signals to allow two or more full-duplex radio devices each with one or more antennas to estimate their channel state information (CSI) consistently and at the same time prevent eavesdropper (Eve) with any number of antennas from obtaining its CSI consistently. This paper presents optimal designs of the pilots for ANECE based on two criteria. The first is the mean squared error (MSE) of channel estimation for the users, and the second is the mutual information (MI) between the pilot-driven signals observed by the users. Closed-form optimal pilots are shown under the sum-MSE and sum-MI criteria subject to a symmetric and isotropic condition. Algorithms for computing the optimal pilots are shown for general cases. Fairness issues for three or more users are discussed. The performances of different designs are compared.

We consider backward crosstalk in 2×2 transmitters, which is caused by crosstalk from the outputs of the transmitter to the inputs or by the combination of output crosstalk and impedance mismatch. We analyze its impact via feedback networks together with third-order power amplifier non-linearities. We utilize the Bussgang decomposition to express the distorted output signals of the transmitter as a linear transformation of the input plus uncorrelated distortion. The normalized mean-square errors (NMSEs) between the distorted and desired amplified signals are expressed analytically and the optimal closed-form power back-off that minimizes the worst NMSE of the two branches is derived. In the second part of the paper, an achievable spectral efficiency (SE) is presented for the communication from this “dirty” transmitter to another single-antenna receiver. The SE-maximizing precoder is optimally found by exploiting the hardware characteristics. Furthermore, the optimal power back-off is analyzed for two sub-optimal precoders, which either do not exploit any hardware knowledge or only partial knowledge. The simulation results show that the performance of these sub-optimal precoders is close-to-optimal. We also discuss how the analysis in this paper can be extended to transmitters with an arbitrary number of antenna branches.

A recently proposed method for realizing frequency-reconfigurable antennas across a wideband is based on adjusting the feed amplitudes and phases of a multiport antenna. In this article, we demonstrate the feasibility of the method, for the first time, with a conjunction of an integrated RF transmitter and a four-element antenna cluster. The implementation performs on-chip amplitude and phase tuning with supply scaling and delay tuning circuits to tune the antenna cluster without requirement of matching network. The antenna cluster is built with four closely spaced antenna elements implemented on a printed circuit board. The transmitter integrated circuit (IC) is implemented in a 28-nm CMOS process with the chip size of 0.85 mm x 0.95 mm, including pads. A combined L-S-band antenna module consists of four rectangular patch antennas, two of which operate at the frequencies of the first harmonics (L-band), and two others at the frequencies of the second harmonics (S-band). The module is intended for use in super heterodyne signal reception circuits, for example in studying the various non-linear phenomena. The results of this study are presented in terms of improving the performance of each antenna and minimising their mutual influence. The resonance frequencies of the L-band antenna differ by 50MHz. All the antennas radiate close to the zenith and their beamwidths in two principal planes are virtually the same. At the resonance frequencies, the reflection coefficient is S-11<-30dB for the transmitting antenna, and S-11<-20dB for the receiving antenna. The minimum allowable distance between the antennas is determined, at which their mutual influence can be neglected (S-12<-50dB).

This paper investigates the problem of the interference among multiple simultaneous transmissions in the downlink channel of a multiantenna wireless system. A symbol-level precoding scheme is considered, in order to exploit the multiuser interference and transform it into useful power at the receiver side, through a joint utilization of the data information and the channel state information. In this context, this paper presents novel strategies that exploit the potential of symbol-level precoding to control the per-antenna instantaneous transmit power. In particular, the power peaks among the transmitting antennas and the instantaneous power imbalances across the different transmitted streams are minimized. These objectives are particularly relevant with respect to the nonlinear amplitude and phase distortions induced by the per-antenna amplifiers, which are important sources of performance degradation in practical systems. More specifically, this paper proposes two different symbol-level precoding approaches. The first approach performs a weighted per-antenna power minimization, under quality-of-service constraints and under a lower bound constraint on the per-antenna transmit power. The second strategy performs a minimization of the spatial peak-to-average power ratio, evaluated among the transmitting antennas. Numerical results are presented in a comparative fashion to show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques, which outperform the state-of-the-art symbol-level precoding schemes in terms of spatial peak-to-average power ratio, spatial dynamic range, and symbol error rate over nonlinear channels., QC 20190916

In the other two architectures, which we refer to as RF domain SLP, the processing happens entirely in the RF domain, thus eliminating the need for multiple fully digital RF chains altogether. Instead, analog phase shifters directly modulate the signals on the transmit antennas. The precoding design for all the considered cases is formulated as a constrained least squares problem and efficient algorithmic solutions are developed via the Coordinate Descent method. Simulations provide insights on the power efficiency of the proposed schemes and the improvements over the fully digital counterparts.

We provide measured data collected from 97 trains completing over 7000 journeys in Sweden showing that the throughput over LTE is impacted by train velocity. A recent communication provided a model for the transmittance between two antennas supporting Orbital Angular Momentum modes. That formulation involved a single integral along the radial spectral coordinate. That approach actually also applies to any pair of apertures supporting arbitrary distributions. Asymptotically, for far field conditions, an analytical expression has been developed, as a power of the near-field parameter, corresponding to the ratio between the far-field limit and the distance between antennas. This expansion is extended to the intermediate-field region, as a polynomial of the near-field parameter. The convergence of this method is discussed, along with the corresponding time savings and limitations.

This paper shows that the non-coherent schemes are meaningful alternatives to training-based communication, specially as the number of transmit antennas increases. In particular, for more than two transmit antennas, non-coherent communication provides a clear advantage in medium to high mobility scenarios.

Antenna subset selection (ASS), combined with CE precoding, can further improve power efficiency by using a part of antennas to combine the desired signal. However, due to the inherent nonlinearity, the joint optimization of CE precoding and ASS is very challenging and satisfactory solutions are yet not available. In this paper, we present new methods for CE precoding and ASS optimization from a geometric perspective. First, we show the equivalence between the CE precoder design and a polygon construction problem in the complex plane, thus transforming the algebraic problem into a geometric problem. Aiming to minimize the computational complexity, we further transform the CE precoder design into a triangle construction problem, and propose a novel algorithm to achieve the optimal CE precoder with only linear complexity in the number of used antennas. Then, we investigate the joint optimization of ASS and CE precoding to minimize the total transmit power while satisfying the QoS requirement. Based on the geometric interpretation, we develop an efficient ASS algorithm, which, using only addition and comparison operations, is guaranteed to find the globally optimal solution and provides robustness to channel uncertainty. The complexity of the proposed ASS algorithm is at most quadratic in the number of antennas in the worst case. The optimality and superiority of the proposed geometric methods are demonstrated via numerical results.

The present work focuses on the forward link of fixed multibeam broadband satellite systems which employ aggressive frequency reuse patterns in the user-link. For such scenarios, the state-of-the art frame based precoding methods can improve the system performance, exploiting the super framing structure of the latest physical layer evolutions in satellite communications. Nevertheless, the limitations of feeder link need to be considered. Since the increase of the user link capacity leads to a proportional increase in the capacity requirements of the point-to-point feeder link, the deployment of multiple gateways to feed the satellite is examined. The main concept lies in each earth station being dedicated to serve a cluster of beams. In this context, the performance degradation due to inter-cluster interference is quantified. Since inter-cluster interference is expected to primarily affect cluster-edge users, the chosen performance metric is system fairness. Next, coordination between the multiple gateways is proposed as a means to mitigate interference between the different clusters and thus increase the minimum SINR over the coverage. Consequently, the gains in terms of system availability, a crucial metric in satellite communications, are exhibited via numerical system level simulations. The energy efficiency of the proposed system is also presented.

Spectrum scarcity together with high capacity demands make the use of millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies an interesting alternative for next generation, i.e., fifth generation (5G), networks. Although mmWave is expected to play a key role for both access network and backhaul (BH), its initial use in the BH network seems more straight-forward. This stems from the fact that, in the BH case, its deployment is less challenging due to the fixed locations of BH transceivers. Still, provided that mmWave spectrum consists of several subbands, each one with different characteristics and thus different deployment constraints (e.g., channel bandwidth, maximum transmission power), a comparison is required in order to gain a better insight into the potentials of each solution. To that end, in this paper, the main mmWave candidate frequency bands are compared in terms of range, throughput and energy consumption. In our results, the bandwidth availability, the maximum transmission power as well as the antenna gains of each BH technology are taken into account, as defined by the Federal Communications Commission. This paper investigates the application of filter bank multicarrier modulation based on the OQAM (FBMC/OQAM) to multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Existing solutions guarantee satisfactory performance when the streams multiplexed on each subcarrier (S) and the number of transmit (NT) and receive (NR) antennas are related as S = min (NT, NR). When S <; min (NT, NR), the techniques presented in previous works either exhibit an error floor or perform much worse than orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). To make progress towards the combination of FBMC/OQAM with MIMO we propose a two-step approach and a coordinated beamforming algorithm to design the transmit and the receive processing. Numerical results show that the two-step method provides similar bit error rate (BER) as OFDM when S + 1 = NT = NR. Resorting to the coordinated beamforming solution, which is based on an iterative method, the application of FBMC/OQAM is extended to the general case S <; min (NT, NR). Hence, the techniques presented in this paper demonstrate that FBMC/OQAM can achieve practically the same BER as OFDM with an increased spectral efficiency and a significantly decreased out-of-band radiation, which is an important advantage for non-contiguous spectrum allocations., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author's final draft)

DVB-NGH (Digital Video Broadcasting - Next Generation Handheld) is the next generation technology for mobile TV broadcasting, which has been developed by the DVB project with the most advanced transmission technologies. DVB-NGH is the first broadcasting standard to incorporate multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) as the key technology to overcome the Shannon limit of single antenna communications. MIMO techniques can be used to improve the robustness of the transmitted signal by exploiting the spatial diversity of the MIMO channel, but also to achieve increased data rates through spatial multiplexing. This article describes the benefits of MIMO that motivated its incorporation in DVB-NGH, reviews the MIMO schemes adopted, and discusses some aspects related to the deployment of MIMO networks in DVB-NGH. The article also provides a feature comparison with the multi-antenna techniques for 3GGP's LTE/LTE-Advanced for cellular networks. Finally, physical layer simulation results calibrated within the DVB-NGH standardization process are provided to illustrate the gain of MIMO for the next generation of mobile TV broadcasting.

In this paper, we propose a closed-loop and single RF multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) method, particularly suitable for the Uplink of cellular systems, which is based on the low-complexity and recently devised method of Spatial Modulation. By selecting a subset of the available transmit antennas to implement Spatial Modulation based on the instantaneous Bit Error Rate (BER), the proposed method achieves both multiplexing and transmit-diversity gains by utilizing only one RF chain. For single-user MIMO channels with partial re ceiver CSI, we study the difference between a lower bound and two alternative upper bounds of the mutual information achieved with Gaussian codebooks. These differences are termed bound gaps ¿ and d, respectively. The latter may serve to derive a capacity bound gap. In contrast to previous studies, we assume that the channel estimation error statistics are not given a priori, but depend on the parameters of a training routine, in which a pilot sequence is transmitted, and where the channel realization is linearly estimated. Under these conditions, we successively determine analytic upper and lower bounds on the mutual information bound gap ¿. We further study the asymptotic behavior of said bound gaps for high SNR and a large number of antennas.
