1. Exploring the importance of links between health behaviours for economic evaluations of behaviour-change strategies : a case study considering the link between smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol

Abstract

Links between health behaviours are potentially of great importance for cost-effectiveness estimates in economic evaluations of behaviour change strategies. This thesis investigates bias in economic evaluations due to the omission of links between health behaviours. A framework to evaluate the health costs and consequences of behaviour change strategies while accounting for links to other health-related behaviours is proposed, and tested using a case study of the link between tobacco and alcohol use. There is strong evidence of correlation between alcohol use and tobacco use. Nevertheless, while many economic evaluations of interventions for alcohol and tobacco behaviour change have been conducted and used to inform resource allocation decisions, none have considered implications of links between the two behaviours. Assumptions about behaviour beyond typical trial endpoints in historical economic evaluations have in general been based on limited follow-up data. Analysis of the joint dynamics of tobacco and alcohol use employing large-scale longitudinal survey data is used in this thesis as an alternative to inform assumptions about long-run smoking behaviour and its link to alcohol use, in a de novo individual-level simulation to appraise the cost-effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions. Smoking behaviour is found to be persistent and dynamically linked to alcohol use, but also influenced by numerous other factors, including unobserved time-invariant person-specific characteristics which determine the propensity to smoke. The ability of smoking cessation interventions to permanently reduce the propensity to smoke is important for their long-run cost-effectiveness. In the absence of data on this effect, historical economic evaluations may have misinformed decision makers. There is a need for robust and tested assumptions about long-term behaviour and case by case consideration of the importance of inter-behavioural links in future economic evaluations of behaviour change strategies, and for further investigation into the dynamics and interrelation of health-related behaviours.

Abstract

This document plus diskette product provides nine interactive puzzles and games that both teach and provide practice with simple addition and subtraction concepts. The activities address these skills through carrying in addition and regrouping in subtraction. The activities address cognitive skills such as problem solving, planning, visual pattern recognition, and construction skills. Most of the games do not require students to have mastered the arithmetic facts presented in order to solve the problems. Rather, students discover mathematical concepts through engaging in the activities and puzzles. Students are provided with many different opportunities to practice their addition and subtraction skills in new ways. The printed user's guide discusses learning objectives; overview of the activities and their educational goals; teacher options; game features, such as pull down menus, control buttons, and scoreboard; and the nine individual games. The nine games are: Arithmetic Blocks; Spokes; Simon Adds; A Maze Thing; TenPins; TeenPins; Carry It; Adding Scales; and ArithmeSnakes. (MKR)

Abstract

The emergence of drug resistance is a major limitation of current antimalarials. The discovery of new druggable targets and pathways including those that are critical for multiple life cycle stages of the malaria parasite is a major goal for developing next-generation antimalarial drugs. Using an integrated chemogenomics approach that combined drug resistance selection, whole-genome sequencing, and an orthogonal yeast model, we demonstrate that the cytoplasmic prolyl–tRNA (transfer RNA) synthetase (PfcPRS) of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum is a biochemical and functional target of febrifugine and its synthetic derivative halofuginone. Febrifugine is the active principle of a traditional Chinese herbal remedy for malaria. We show that treatment with febrifugine derivatives activated the amino acid starvation response in both P. falciparum and a transgenic yeast strain expressing PfcPRS. We further demonstrate in the Plasmodium berghei mouse model of malaria that halofuginol, a new halofuginone analog that we developed, is active against both liver and asexual blood stages of the malaria parasite. Halofuginol, unlike halofuginone and febrifugine, is well tolerated at efficacious doses and represents a promising lead for the development of dual-stage next-generation antimalarials., Howard Hughes Medical Institute

4. A Survey of Horse Training in New England

Abstract

New England no longer has a significant horse training industry. It has many small operations with no obvious and overlapping training philosophies or practices. Show and competition programs are intense and competitive at regional, national and even international levels leading to the observation that techniques employed are equally strategic and tediously designed in order to encourage the exemplary results in the show ring. This study aimed to examine the methods, routines, and strategies that are used by top tier trainers in the New England region of the United States. This information was collected both in survey form and in interview form, to maximize collection and indications of how each particular trainer, breeder, or owner was most easily contacted. The data was then compiled, analyzed for trends, outliers, and other points of interest with the end goal of giving a basic but thorough view of the methods and strategies used by trainers of prestige in the New England area. Results of this study will hold relevance both to those interested in this luxury hobby and to economy minded individuals, as horses are still a substantial percentage of livestock in the New England area. Future studies in the New England area could target a larger group of trainers and stables, while future studies could also be performed in other regions of the United States.

6. The Effects of Silicon Applications on Wear and Drought Stress of Cool Season Turfgrass

Abstract

The ability of turfgrass to maintain quality and functionality during use and drought stress are fundamental to almost all turfgrass environments. A possible mechanism to increase wear and drought tolerance is through the use of supplemental silicon (Si) application. Until recently, Si has received little attention for its role in crop physiology or performance. While it is recoverable within the plant it is not recognized as an “essential” plant growth component. Si is the second most abundant element in the Earth’s crust; however the majority of soil-Si is bio-geochemically inert. Plants absorb Si exclusively as monosillicic acid, H2SiO4 which may be depleted from many soils due to crop harvest, erosion or heavily weathered soils. Soils in Rhode Island are largely formed over granite materials, being highly resistant to weathering releasing little soluble-Si. The objective of this research was to provide increased knowledge and insight to how Si applications might affect cool season turfgrass wear tolerance, from foot and vehicular traffic, and drought tolerance. Four treatments were applied to raise the ambient soil-Si by a minimum of 20%. The supplement treatments included ash of a known Si accumulator, bamboo leaves, wollastonite, PlantTuff silicon fertilizer, and Stabilized Silica Technology 28% liquid fertilizer. Trials were conducted at three sites on a sandy-skeletal, mixed, mesic Typic Udorthents practice green with approximately 50,000 rounds per year, a coarse-loamy, mixed, active, mesic Aquic Dystrudepts fairway with approximately 12,000 rounds per year, and an urban disturbed soil on campus at the University of Rhode Island that had Kentucky bluegrass sod laid in 2012. Plots were 3ft x 3ft, replicated four times in a randomized complete block design. Quality ratings, color and cover, were visually estimated using a 1 to 10 scale, where 1 = poor, 10 = excellent, and 7 = acceptable.

Abstract

Item does not contain fulltext, Advancements in genetic testing to identify predisposition for hereditary breast cancer (HBC) mean that it is important to understand the incremental costs and benefits of the new technologies compared with current testing strategies. This study aimed to (1) identify and critically appraise existing economic evidence for BRCA1/2 mutation testing for HBC and (2) establish whether economic evidence was used to inform national guidance in England and Wales. A telephone interview with diagnostic laboratories (n=14) offering BRCA1/2 mutation testing identified that 9 (64%) used Sanger DNA sequencing with multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and two offered next generation sequencing. A systematic review identified 15 economic studies that evaluated: genetic testing for HBC (5 studies); preventive management options for women at risk of HBC (8 studies); and different laboratory approaches for BRCA1 testing (2 studies). These evaluations were not relevant to U.K. practice, and therefore the development of national guidance using a risk threshold to trigger BRCA1/2 testing has not been informed by existing economic evidence. The lack of economic evidence supporting the current risk threshold for national guidance has implications for the efficient use of healthcare resources and the design of economic evaluations of new technologies for BRCA1/2 testing.

Abstract

IceCube is a km-scale neutrino observatory under construction at the South Pole with sensors both in the deep ice (InIce) and on the surface (IceTop). The sensors, called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs). detect, digitize and timestamp the signals from optical Cherenkov-radiation photons. The DOM Main Board (MB) data acquisition subsystem is connected to the central DAQ in the IceCube Laboratory (ICL) by a single twisted copper wire-pair and transmits packetized data on demand. Time calibration is maintained throughout the array by regular transmission to the DOMs of precisely timed analog signals, synchronized to a central GPS-disciplined clock. The design goals and consequent features, functional capabilities, and initial performance of the DOM MB, and the operation of a combined array of DOMs as a system, are described here. Experience with the first InIce strings and the IceTop stations indicates that the system design and performance goals have been achieved. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Point source searches with the IceCube neutrino telescope have been restricted to one hemisphere, due to the exclusive selection of upward going events as a way of rejecting the atmospheric muon background. We show that the region above the horizon can be included by suppressing the background through energy-sensitive cuts. This improves the sensitivity above PeV energies, previously not accessible for declinations of more than a few degrees below the horizon due to the absorption of neutrinos in Earth. We present results based on data collected with 22 strings of IceCube, extending its field of view and energy reach for point source searches. No significant excess above the atmospheric background is observed in a sky scan and in tests of source candidates. Upper limits are reported, which for the first time cover point sources in the southern sky up to EeV energies.

Abstract

We report on a search with the IceCube detector for high-energy muon neutrinos from GRB 080319B, one of the brightest gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever observed. The fireball model predicts that a mean of 0.1 events should be detected by IceCube for a bulk Lorentz boost of the jet of 300. In both the direct on-time window of 66 s and an extended window of about 300 s around the GRB, no excess was found above background. The 90% CL upper limit on the number of track-like events from the GRB is 2.7, corresponding to a muon neutrino fluence limit of 9.5 x 10(-3) erg cm(-2) in the energy range between 120 TeV and 2.2 PeV, which contains 90% of the expected events.

Abstract

A search for muon neutrinos from neutralino annihilations in the Sun has been performed with the IceCube 22-string neutrino detector using data collected in 104.3 days of live time in 2007. No excess over the expected atmospheric background has been observed. Upper limits have been obtained on the annihilation rate of captured neutralinos in the Sun and converted to limits on the weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) proton cross sections for WIMP masses in the range 250-5000 GeV. These results are the most stringent limits to date on neutralino annihilation in the Sun.

Abstract

The AMANDA-II detector, operating since 2000 in the deep ice at the geographic South Pole, has accumulated a large sample of atmospheric muon neutrinos in the 100 GeV to 10 TeV energy range. The zenith angle and energy distribution of these events can be used to search for various phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity in the neutrino sector, such as violation of Lorentz invariance or quantum decoherence. Analyzing a set of 5511 candidate neutrino events collected during 1387 days of livetime from 2000 to 2006, we find no evidence for such effects and set upper limits on violation of Lorentz invariance and quantum decoherence parameters using a maximum likelihood method. Given the absence of evidence for new flavor-changing physics, we use the same methodology to determine the conventional atmospheric muon neutrino flux above 100 GeV.

Abstract

We present new results of searches for neutrino point sources in the northern sky, using data recorded in 2007-2008 with 22 strings of the IceCube detector (approximately one-fourth of the planned total) and 275.7 days of live time. The final sample of 5114 neutrino candidate events agrees well with the expected background of atmospheric muon neutrinos and a small component of atmospheric muons. No evidence of a point source is found, with the most significant excess of events in the sky at 2.2 sigma after accounting for all trials. The average upper limit over the northern sky for point sources of muon-neutrinos with E-2 spectrum is E-2 Phi(v mu) < 1.4 x 10(-11) TeV cm(-2) s(-1), in the energy range from 3 TeV to 3 PeV, improving the previous best average upper limit by the AMANDA-II detector by a factor of 2.

Abstract

We present a search for point sources of high energy neutrinos using 3.8 yr of data recorded by AMANDA-II during 2000-2006. After reconstructing muon tracks and applying selection criteria designed to optimally retain neutrino-induced events originating in the northern sky, we arrive at a sample of 6595 candidate events, predominantly from atmospheric neutrinos with primary energy 100 GeV to 8 TeV. Our search of this sample reveals no indications of a neutrino point source. We place the most stringent limits to date on E-2 neutrino fluxes from points in the northern sky, with an average upper limit of E-2 Phi(nu mu)+nu(tau)<= 5.2x10(-11) TeV cm(-2) s(-1) on the sum of nu(mu) and nu(tau) fluxes, assumed equal, over the energy range from 1.9 TeV to 2.5 PeV.

Abstract

The Polar satellite carries a system of four wire booms in the spacecraft spin plane and two rigid booms along the spin axis. Each of the booms has a spherical sensor at its tip along with nearby guard and stub surfaces whose potentials relative to that of their sphere are controlled by associated electronics. The potential differences between opposite sphere pairs are measured to yield the three components of the DC to >1 MHz electric field. Spheres can also be operated in a mode in which their collected current is measured to give information on the plasma density and its fluctuations. Abstract

The Topside Ionosphere Plasma Monitor (SSIE) is an operational system flown on the Block 5D F2 DMSP Satellite for transmission of continuous data on the state of the topside ionosphere. The instrument consists of separate electron and ion sensors mounted on a 2.5-ft boom deployed after spacecraft attitude has been stabilized in orbit. This report describes the two sensors, associated electronics, and their operational timelines. The theoretical basis is given for the measurement of a number of plasma parameters: electron temperature and density, ion density, average ion temperature and mean ion mass (for one or two ion species), spacecraft potential, and plasma scale height. Abstract

Neurons of the barn owl's (Tyto alba) nucleus laminaris, the first site of binaural convergence, respond in a phase-locked fashion to a tone delivered to either ear. It may take longer to elicit phase-locked spikes from one ear than from the other. This disparity in delay differs from neuron to neuron and is independent of tonal frequency. In binaural stimulation, neurons respond best when sound in one ear leads that in the other by an amount equal to their delay disparities but opposite in sign. This condition causes simultaneous arrival of phase-locked spikes from the two sides. Laminaris neurons can thus be described as coincidence detectors. The phase of a tone-induced evoked potential, termed "neurophonic," varies systematically with position in nucleus laminaris. From dorsal to ventral within the nucleus, the phase delay of a contralaterally elicited potential decreases and that of its ipsilateral counter-part increases. Therefore, if the neurophonic delay is due to the delay of phase-locked spikes, an orderly representation of delay disparities is shown. Because they act as coincidence detectors, laminaris neurons should show selectivity for interaural phase difference based on their place in the nucleus. Thus, nucleus laminaris presumably measures and maps interaural phase differences by using the principles of delay lines and coincidence detection.

25. Optical and radio astronomy in the early years

Abstract

Radio noise from space was detected by Karl Jansky in 1931, working at the Bell Telephone Laboratories (Jansky 1933). This revolutionary discovery broke the barrier confining astronomical knowledge to the information contained, and the relevant physics, within the narrow band of wavelengths accessible (an octave and a half), and to positions and motions under purely gravitational forces. Jansky's wavelength was ten million times longer than that of light. His signals were radiated from the galactic center, 10,000 parsecs distant. The long wavelengths he used resulted in low angular resolution. There was no radial velocity information, no sharp spectral features (the first line was found twenty years later). For such reasons, and perhaps because he was an electrical engineer, no astronomer beat a pathway to his door; in fact I have never met any astronomer who personally knew him. Public recognition came only as an article in the New York Times (May 5, 1933) and a radio interview. His relevant bibliography includes only seven entries over the years 1932 to 1939, and he died young (see the article by Sullivan in this volume for further information on Jansky). As a summer resident of New Jersey seashore resorts in the early 1930s, I wore golf knickers, possibly even a hip flask, and drove an open car with a rumble seat (oh nostalgia!) past the giant antennas of the transatlantic radio transmitters for which Jansky's studies of noise background were to find the best operating wavelengths. Although I felt no premonitory twinges, I met my wife there, soon became interested in Jansky's results, and my life became linked with that place and time.
