Search

Several diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) have profiles with resolved sub-peaks that resemble rotational bands of large molecules. Analysis of these profiles can constrain the sizes and geometries of the DIB carriers, especially if the profiles exhibit clear variations along lines of sight probing different physical conditions. Using the extensive data set from the EDIBLES survey we searched for systematic variations in the peak-to-peak separation of these sub-peaks for the $\lambda\lambda$5797, 6379, and 6614 DIBs in lines of sight with a single dominant interstellar cloud. We used the spectra of twelve single-cloud sight lines to measure the peak-to-peak separation in the band profile substructures for these DIBs. We adopted the rotational contour formalism to infer the rotational constant for each DIB carrier and the rotational excitation temperature in the sight lines. We compared these to rotational constants for linear and spherical molecules to estimate the DIB carrier sizes. All three DIBs have peak separations that vary systematically between lines of sight, indicating correlated changes in the rotational excitation temperatures. We derived $B_{6614}$=$(22.2\pm8.9)\times 10^{-3}$ cm$^{-1}$, consistent with previous estimates. Assuming a similar rotational temperature for the $\lambda$6614 DIB carrier and assuming a linear carrier, we found B$_{5797}^{\rm linear}=(5.1\pm2.0)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$ and B$_{6379}^{\rm linear} =(2.3\pm0.9)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$. If the carriers of those DIBs however are spherical species, their rotational constants are half that value, $B_{5797}^{\rm spherical} = (2.6\pm1.0)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$ and $B_{6379}^{\rm spherical} = (1.1\pm0.4)\times10^{-3}~{\rm cm}^{-1}$. We estimate molecule sizes that range from 7--9 carbon atoms ($\lambda$6614 carrier, linear) to 77--114 carbon atoms ($\lambda$6379, spherical)., Comment: 21 pages, 56 figures. We have conducted a high signal-to-noise spectroscopic survey of 670 nearby early-type stars, to map Diffuse Interstellar Band (DIB) absorption in and around the Local Bubble. The project started with a Southern hemisphere survey conducted at the European Southern Observatory's New Technology Telescope and has since been extended to an all-sky survey using the Isaac Newton Telescope. In this first paper in the series, we introduce the overall project and present the results from the Southern hemisphere survey. We make available a catalogue of equivalent-width measurements of the DIBs at 5780, 5797, 5850, 6196, 6203, 6270, 6283 \& 6614 \AA, the interstellar Na\,{\sc i} D lines at 5890 \& 5896 \AA, and the stellar He\,{\sc i} line at 5876 \AA. We find that the 5780 \AA\ DIB is relatively strong throughout, as compared to the 5797 \AA\ DIB, but especially within the Local Bubble and at the interface with more neutral medium. The 6203 \AA\ DIB shows a similar behaviour, but with respect to the 6196 \AA\ DIB. Some nearby stars show surprisingly strong DIBs whereas some distant stars show very weak DIBs, indicating small-scale structure within as well as outside the Local Bubble. The sight-lines with non-detections trace the extent of the Local Bubble especially clearly, and show it opening out into the Halo. The Local Bubble has a wall which is in contact with hot gas and/or a harsh interstellar radiation field. That wall is perforated though, causing leakage of radiation and possibly hot gas. On the other hand, compact self-shielded cloudlets are present much closer to the Sun, probably within the Local Bubble itself. As for the carriers of the DIBs, our observations confirm the notion that these are large molecules, whose differences in behaviour are mainly governed by their differing resilience and/or electrical charge, with more subtle differences possibly related to varying excitation., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The structure and properties of the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) on small scales, sub-au to 1 pc, are poorly understood. We compare interstellar absorption-lines, observed towards a selection of O- and B-type stars at two or more epochs, to search for variations over time caused by the transverse motion of each star combined with changes in the structure in the foreground ISM. Two sets of data were used: 83 VLT- UVES spectra with approximately 6 yr between epochs and 21 McDonald observatory 2.7m telescope echelle spectra with 6 - 20 yr between epochs, over a range of scales from 0 - 360 au. The interstellar absorption-lines observed at the two epochs were subtracted and searched for any residuals due to changes in the foreground ISM. Of the 104 sightlines investigated with typically five or more components in Na I D, possible temporal variation was identified in five UVES spectra (six components), in Ca II, Ca I and/or Na I absorption-lines. The variations detected range from 7\% to a factor of 3.6 in column density. No variation was found in any other interstellar species. Most sightlines show no variation, with 3{\sigma} upper limits to changes of the order 0.1 - 0.3 dex in Ca II and Na I. These variations observed imply that fine-scale structure is present in the ISM, but at the resolution available in this study, is not very common at visible wavelengths. A determination of the electron densities and lower limits to the total number density of a sample of the sightlines implies that there is no striking difference between these parameters in sightlines with, and sightlines without, varying components., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present observations which probe the small-scale structure of the interstellar medium using diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). Towards HD 168075/6 in the Eagle Nebula, significant differences in DIB absorption are found between the two lines of sight, which are separated by 0.25 pc, and {\lambda}5797 exhibits a velocity shift. Similar data are presented for four stars in the {\mu} Sgr system. We also present a search for variations in DIB absorption towards {\kappa} Vel, where the atomic lines are known to vary on scales of ~10 AU. Observations separated by ~9 yr yielded no evidence for changes in DIB absorption strength over this scale, but do reveal an unusual DIB spectrum., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. We present the first sample of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in the nearby galaxy M33. Studying DIBs in other galaxies allows the behaviour of the carriers to be examined under interstellar conditions which can be quite different from those of the Milky Way, and to determine which DIB properties can be used as reliable probes of extragalactic interstellar media. Multi-object spectroscopy of 43 stars in M33 has been performed using Keck/DEIMOS. The stellar spectral types were determined and combined with literature photometry to determine the M33 reddenings E(B-V)_M33. Equivalent widths or upper limits have been measured for the {\lambda}5780 DIB towards each star. DIBs were detected towards 20 stars, demonstrating that their carriers are abundant in M33. The relationship with reddening is found to be at the upper end of the range observed in the Milky Way. The line of sight towards one star has an unusually strong ratio of DIB equivalent width to E(B-V)_M33, and a total of seven DIBs were detected towards this star., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Ultra-high spectral resolution observations of time-varying interstellar absorption towards {\kappa} Vel are reported, using the Ultra-High Resolution Facility on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Detections of interstellar Ca I, Ca II, K I, Na I and CH are obtained, whilst an upper limit on the column density is reported for C_2. The results show continued increases in column densities of K I and Ca I since observations ~ 4 yr earlier, as the transverse motion of the star carried it ~ 10 AU perpendicular to the line of sight. Line profile models are fitted to the spectra and two main narrow components (A & B) are identified for all species except CH. The column density N(K I) is found to have increased by 82 +10-9 % between 1994 and 2006, whilst N(Ca I) is found to have increased by 32 +- 5 % over the shorter period of 2002-2006. The line widths are used to constrain the kinetic temperature to T_k,A < 671 +18-17 K and T_k,B < 114 +15-14 K. Electron densities are determined from the Ca I / Ca II ratio, which in turn place lower limits on the total number density of n_A > 7 * 10^3 cm^-3 and n_B > 2 * 10^4 cm^-3. Calcium depletions are estimated from the Ca I / K I ratio. Comparison with the chemical models of Bell et al. (2005) confirms the high number density, with n = 5 * 10^4 cm^-3 for the best-fitting model. The first measurements of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) towards this star are made at two epochs, but only an upper limit of < 40 % is placed on their variation over ~ 9 years. The DIBs are unusually weak for the measured E(B-V) and appear to exhibit similar behaviour to that seen in Orion. The ratio of equivalent widths of the {\lambda}5780 to {\lambda}5797 DIBs is amongst the highest known, which may indicate that the carrier of {\lambda}5797 is more sensitive to UV radiation than to local density., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. The first detection of the C60 (Buckminsterfullerene) molecule in massive embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) is reported. Observations with Spitzer IRS reveal the presence of C60 in YSOs ISOGAL-P J174639.6-284126 and SSTGC 372630 in the Central Molecular Zone in the Galactic centre, and in a YSO candidate, 2MASS J06314796+0419381, in the Rosette nebula. The first detection of C60 in a Herbig Ae/Be star, HD 97300, is also reported. These observations extend the range of astrophysical environments in which C60 is found to YSOs and a pre-main sequence star. Context. Luminous blue variables (LBVs) are a class of highly unstable stars that have been proposed to play a critical role in massive stellar evolution as well as being the progenitors of some of the most luminous supernovae known. However the physical processes underlying their characteristic instabilities are currently unknown. Aims. In order to provide observational constraints on this behaviour we have initiated a pilot study of the population of (candidate) LBVs in the Local Group galaxy M 33. Methods. To accomplish this we have obtained new spectra of 18 examples within M 33. These provide a baseline of ≥ 4 yr with respect to previous observations, which is well suited to identifying LBV outbursts. We also employed existing multi-epoch optical and mid-IR surveys of M 33 to further constrain the variability of the sample and search for the presence of dusty ejecta. Results. Combining the datasets reveals that spectroscopic and photometric variability appears common, although in the majority of cases further observations will be needed to distinguish between an origin for this behavour in short lived stochastic wind structure and low level photospheric pulsations or coherent long term LBV excursions. Of the known LBVs we report a hitherto unidentified excursion of M 33 Var C between 2001-5, while the transition of the WNLh star B517 to a cooler B supergiant phase between 1993−2010 implies an LBV classification. Proof-of-concept quantitative model atmosphere analysis is provided for Romano’s star; the resultant stellar parameters being consistent with the finding that the LBV excursions of this star are accompanied by changes in bolometric luminosity. The combination of temperature and luminosity of two stars, the BHG [HS80] 110A and the cool hypergiant B324, appear to be in violation of the empirical Humphreys-Davidson limit. We present the largest sample to-date of intermediate-resolution blue-to-red optical spectra of B-type supergiants in M31 and undertake the first survey of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) in this galaxy. Spectral classifications, radial velocities and interstellar reddenings are presented for 34 stars in three regions of M31. Radial velocities and equivalent widths are given for the 5780 and 6283 DIBs towards 11 stars. Equivalent widths are also presented for the following DIBs detected in three sightlines in M31: 4428, 5705, 5780, 5797, 6203, 6269, 6283, 6379, 6613, 6660, and 6993. All of these M31 DIB carriers reside in clouds at radial velocities matching those of interstellar Na I and/or H I. The relationships between DIB equivalent widths and reddening (E(B-V)) are consistent with those observed in the local ISM of the Milky Way. Many of the observed sightlines show DIB strengths (per unit reddening) which lie at the upper end of the range of Galactic values. DIB strengths per unit reddening are found (with 68% confidence), to correlate with the interstellar UV radiation field strength. The strongest DIBs are observed where the interstellar UV flux is lowest. The mean Spitzer 8/24 micron emission ratio in our three fields is slightly lower than that measured in the Milky Way, but we identify no correlation between this ratio and the DIB strengths in M31. Interstellar oxygen abundances derived from the spectra of three M31 H II regions in one of the fields indicate that the average metallicity of the ISM in that region is 12 + log[O/H] = 8.54 +- 0.18, which is approximately equal to the value in the solar neighbourhood.

We used the multiplex capabilities of the AAOmega spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope to create a half-square-degree map of the neutral and low-ionized ISM in front of the nearby (~5 kpc), most massive Galactic globular cluster, omega Centauri. Its redshifted, metal-poor and hot horizontal branch stars probe the medium-strong Ca II K and Na I D2 line absorption, and weak absorption in the lambda5780 and lambda5797 Diffuse Interstellar Bands (DIBs), on scales around a parsec. The kinematical and thermodynamical picture emerging from these data is that we predominantly probe the warm neutral medium and weakly-ionized medium of the Galactic Disc-Halo interface, ~0.3-1 kpc above the mid-plane. A comparison with Spitzer Space Telescope 24-micron and DIRBE/IRAS maps of the warm and cold dust emission confirms that both Na I and Ca II trace the overall column density of the warm neutral and weakly-ionized medium. Clear signatures are seen of the depletion of calcium atoms from the gas phase into dust grains. Curiously, the coarse DIRBE/IRAS map is a more reliable representation of the relative reddening between sightlines than the Na I and Ca II absorption-line measurements, most likely because the latter are sensitive to fluctuations in the local ionization conditions. The behaviour of the DIBs is consistent with the lambda5780 band being stronger than the lambda5797 band in regions where the ultraviolet radiation level is relatively high, as in the Disc-Halo interface. This region corresponds to a sigma-type cloud. In all, our maps and simple analytical model calculations show in unprecedented detail that small-scale density and/or ionization structures exist in the extra-planar gas of a spiral galaxy. The observations investigate two current problems in interstellar medium (ISM) research: small-scale structure (SSS), and the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). Very high spectral resolution observations of interstellar Na I, Ca I, Ca II, K I and CH absorption towards kappa Vel are presented. Combined with observations over the last 15 years taken from the literature, the small-scale structure in front of this star is probed on scales of ~ 10 AU. The high resolution and signal-to-noise of the new observations allow detailed modelling of the absorption profiles and the identification of multiple absorption components. For the two narrowest components, the line profile models are used to constrain the temperature, depletion, electron density and total number density within the structures. Diffuse interstellar bands are used as probes of SSS in long-slit observations of lines-of-sight towards three binary/multiple star systems: HD 168075/6, HD 176269/70 and four members of the mu Sgr system, one of which is identified as a member for the first time. The results show clear variations in DIB absorption in the HD 168075/6 and mu Sgr systems over scales of ~ 50,000-200,000 AU, and demonstrate the efficacy of medium-resolution observations of DIBs for identification of small-scale structure in the ISM. Multi-object spectroscopy of 452 stars in the omega Cen globular cluster is also presented, which probes interstellar absorption by Na I, Ca II and DIBs in two dimensions, on scales of ~ 1 pc. There is great promise for the identification of the over 400 other known DIBs, as this result could provide chemical hints towards other possible carriers. In an effort to systematically study the properties of the DIB carriers, we have initiated a new large-scale observational survey: the ESO Diffuse Interstellar Bands Large Exploration Survey (EDIBLES). The main objective is to build on and extend existing DIB surveys to make a major step forward in characterising the physical and chemical conditions for a statistically significant sample of interstellar lines-of-sight, with the goal to reverse-engineer key molecular properties of the DIB carriers. EDIBLES is a filler Large Programme using the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope at Paranal, Chile. It is designed to provide an observationally unbiased view of the presence and behaviour of the DIBs towards early-spectraltype stars whose lines-of-sight probe the diffuse-to-translucent ISM. Such a complete dataset will provide a deep census of the atomic and molecular content, physical conditions, chemical abundances and elemental depletion levels for each sightline. Achieving these goals requires a homogeneous set of high-quality data in terms of resolution (R ~ 70 000 – 100 000), sensitivity (S/N up to 1000 per resolution element), and spectral coverage (305–1042 nm), as well as a large sample size (100+ sightlines). In this first paper the goals, objectives and methodology of the EDIBLES programme are described and an initial assessment of the data is provided.

Such a complete dataset will provide a deep census of the atomic and molecular content, physical conditions, chemical abundances and elemental depletion levels for each sightline. Achieving these goals requires a homogeneous set of high-quality data in terms of resolution (R ~ 70 000 – 100 000), sensitivity (S/N up to 1000 per resolution element), and spectral coverage (305–1042 nm), as well as a large sample size (100+ sightlines). In this first paper the goals, objectives and methodology of the EDIBLES programme are described and an initial assessment of the data is provided.

The carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are largely unidentified molecules ubiquitously present in the interstellar medium (ISM). After decades of study, two strong and possibly three weak near-infrared DIBs have recently been attributed to the C+ 60 fullerene based on observational and laboratory measurements. There is great promise for the identification of the over 400 other known DIBs, as this result could provide chemical hints towards other possible carriers. In an effort to systematically study the properties of the DIB carriers, we have initiated a new large-scale observational survey: the ESO Diffuse Interstellar Bands Large Exploration Survey (EDIBLES). The main objective is to build on and extend existing DIB surveys to make a major step forward in characterising the physical and chemical conditions for a statistically significant sample of interstellar lines-of-sight, with the goal to reverse-engineer key molecular properties of the DIB carriers. EDIBLES is a filler Large Programme using the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope at Paranal, Chile. It is designed to provide an observationally unbiased view of the presence and behaviour of the DIBs towards early-spectraltype stars whose lines-of-sight probe the diffuse-to-translucent ISM. This thesis presents four optical spectroscopic studies of absorption by matter in the diffuse interstellar medium on scales ranging from 10 AU to 10 kpc. The observations investigate two current problems in interstellar medium (ISM) research: small-scale structure (SSS), and the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). Very high spectral resolution observations of interstellar Na I, Ca I, Ca II, K I and CH absorption towards kappa Vel are presented. Combined with observations over the last 15 years taken from the literature, the small-scale structure in front of this star is probed on scales of ~ 10 AU. The high resolution and signal-to-noise of the new observations allow detailed modelling of the absorption profiles and the identification of multiple absorption components. For the two narrowest components, the line profile models are used to constrain the temperature, depletion, electron density and total number density within the structures. Diffuse interstellar bands are used as probes of SSS in long-slit observations of lines-of-sight towards three binary/multiple star systems: HD 168075/6, HD 176269/70 and four members of the mu Sgr system, one of which is identified as a member for the first time. The results show clear variations in DIB absorption in the HD 168075/6 and mu Sgr systems over scales of ~ 50,000-200,000 AU, and demonstrate the efficacy of medium-resolution observations of DIBs for identification of small-scale structure in the ISM. Multi-object spectroscopy of 452 stars in the omega Cen globular cluster is also presented, which probes interstellar absorption by Na I, Ca II and DIBs in two dimensions, on scales of ~ 1 pc. The first detections of diffuse interstellar bands in the M33 galaxy are reported. Multi-object spectroscopy of 43 stars is used to derive spectral types and reddenings, and measure DIB absorption across the disk of the galaxy (~ 10 kpc).
