Using observations with e-MERLIN and the VLA, together with archival data from ALMA, we obtain high-resolution radio images of two binary YSOs: L1551 IRS 5 and L1551 NE, covering a wide range of frequencies from 5 - 336 GHz, and resolving emission from the radio jet on scales of only ~15 au. By comparing these observations to those from a previous epoch, it is shown that there is a high degree of variability in the free-free emission from the jets of these sources. In particular, the northern component of L1551 IRS 5 shows a remarkable decline in flux density of a factor of ~5, suggesting that the free-free emission of this source has almost disappeared. By fitting the spectra of the sources, the ionised mass-loss rates of the jets are derived and it is shown that there is significant variability of up to a factor of ~6 on timescales of ~20 years. Using radiative transfer modelling, we also obtained a model image for the jet of the southern component of L1551 IRS 5 to help study the inner region of the ionised high-density jet. We report the discovery and characterisation of a giant transiting planet orbiting a nearby M3.5V dwarf (d = 80.4 pc, $G$ = 15.1 mag, $K$=11.2 mag, R$_\star$ = 0.358 $\pm$ 0.015 R$_\odot$, M$_\star$ = 0.340 $\pm$ 0.009 M$_\odot$). Using the photometric time series from TESS sectors 10, 36, 46, and 63 and near-infrared spectrophotometry from ExTrA, we measured a planetary radius of 0.77 $\pm$ 0.03 R$_J$ and an orbital period of 1.52 days. With high-resolution spectroscopy taken by the CFHT/SPIRou and ESO/ESPRESSO spectrographs, we refined the host star parameters ([Fe/H] = 0.27 $\pm$ 0.12) and measured the mass of the planet (0.273 $\pm$ 0.006 M$_J$). Based on these measurements, TOI-4860 b joins the small set of massive planets ($>$80 M$_E$) found around mid to late M dwarfs ($<$0.4 R$_\odot$), providing both an interesting challenge to planet formation theory and a favourable target for further atmospheric studies with transmission spectroscopy. We identified an additional signal in the radial velocity data that we attribute to an eccentric planet candidate ($e=0.66\pm0.09$) with an orbital period of $427\pm7$~days and a minimum mass of $1.66\pm 0.26$ M$_J$, but additional data would be needed to confirm this., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Speciation, the continuous process by which new species form, is often investigated by looking at the variation of nucleotide diversity and differentiation across the genome (hereafter genomic landscapes). A key challenge lies in how to determine the main evolutionary forces at play shaping these patterns. One promising strategy, albeit little used to date, is to comparatively investigate these genomic landscapes as progression through time by using a series of species pairs along a divergence gradient. Here, we resequenced 201 whole-genomes from eight closely related Populus species, with pairs of species at different stages along the divergence gradient to learn more about speciation processes. Using population structure and ancestry analyses, we document extensive introgression between some species pairs, especially those with parapatric distributions. We further investigate genomic landscapes, focusing on within-species (i.e. nucleotide diversity and recombination rate) and among-species (i.e. relative and absolute divergence) summary statistics of diversity and divergence. We observe relatively conserved patterns of genomic divergence across species pairs. Independent of the stage across the divergence gradient, we find support for signatures of linked selection (i.e. the interaction between natural selection and genetic linkage) in shaping these genomic landscapes, along with gene flow and standing genetic variation. We highlight the importance of investigating genomic patterns on multiple species across a divergence gradient and discuss prospects to better understand the evolutionary forces shaping the genomic landscapes of diversity and differentiation.

The circular nonuniform electric field has the feature of exponential increase in the electric field intensity along the radius, working with three functional zones of migration, acceleration, and concentration. The distribution form of electric field lines is regulated in functional zones to control the migration behaviors of particles for separation and concentration by altering the relative position of the ring electrode (outside) and rodlike electrode (inner). The circular nonuniform electric field promotes the target-type and high-precision separation of nanoparticles based on the difference in charge-to-size ratio. The concentration multiple of nanoparticles is also controlled randomly with the alternation of radius, taking advantage of vertical extrusion and concentric converging of the migration path. This work provides a brand new insight into the simultaneous separation and concentration of particles and is promising for developing a versatile tool for the separation and preparation of various samples instead of conventional methods.

TOI-1695 is a V-mag=13 M-dwarf star from the northern hemisphere at 45$\,$pc from the Sun, around which a 3.134-day periodic transit signal from a super-Earth candidate was identified in TESS photometry. With a transit depth of 1.3$\,$mmag, the radius of candidate TOI-1695.01 was estimated by the TESS pipeline to be 1.82$\,$R$_\oplus$ with an equilibrium temperature of $\sim 620\,$K. We successfully detect a reflex motion of the star and establish it is due to a planetary companion at an orbital period consistent with the photometric transit period thanks to a year-long radial-velocity monitoring of TOI-1695 by the SPIRou infrared spectropolarimeter. We use and compare different methods to reduce and analyse those data. We report a 5.5-$\sigma$ detection of the planetary signal, giving a mass of $5.5 \pm 1.0\,$M$_\oplus$ and a radius of $2.03 \pm 0.18\,$R$_\oplus$. We derive a mean equilibrium planet temperature of $590 \pm 90\,$K. The mean density of this small planet of $3.6 \pm 1.1\,$g$\,$cm$^{-3}$ is similar (1.7-$\sigma$ lower) than that of the Earth. It leads to a non-negligible fraction of volatiles in its atmosphere with $f_{H,He}=0.28^{+0.46}_{-0.23}$% or $f_\text{water}=23 \pm 12$%. This paper reports on the discovery of a novel three-membrane channel unit exhibiting very steep voltage dependence and strong cooperative behavior. It was reconstituted into planar phospholipid membranes formed by the monolayer method and studied under voltage-clamp conditions. The behavior of the novel channel-former, isolated from Escherichia coli, is consistent with a linearly organized three-channel unit displaying steep voltage-gating (a minimum of 14 charges in the voltage sensor) that rivals that of channels in mammalian excitable membranes. The channels also display strong cooperativity in that closure of the first channel permits the second to close and closure of the second channel permits closure of the third. All three have virtually the same conductance and selectivity, and yet the first and third close at positive potentials whereas the second closes at negative potentials. Thus, is it likely that the second channel-former is oriented in the membrane in a direction opposite to that of the other two. This novel structure is named “triplin.” The extraordinary behavior of triplin indicates that it must have important and as yet undefined physiological roles.

Many recent studies have addressed the mechanisms operating during the early stages of speciation, but surprisingly few studies have tested theoretical predictions on the evolution of strong reproductive isolation (RI). To help address this gap, we first undertook a quantitative review of the hybrid zone literature for flowering plants in relation to reproductive barriers. Then, using Populus as an exemplary model group, we analysed genome-wide variation for phylogenetic tree topologies in both early- and late-stage speciation taxa to determine how these patterns may be related to the genomic architecture of RI. Our plant literature survey revealed variation in barrier complexity and an association between barrier number and introgressive gene flow. Focusing on Populus, our genome-wide analysis of tree topologies in speciating poplar taxa points to unusually complex genomic architectures of RI, consistent with earlier genome-wide association studies. These architectures appear to facilitate the ‘escape’ of introgressed genome segments from polygenic barriers even with strong RI, thus affecting their relationships with recombination rates. Placed within the context of the broader literature, our data illustrate how phylogenomic approaches hold great promise for addressing the evolution and temporary breakdown of RI during late stages of speciation.

SCOPE consists of 850-μm continuum observations of 1235 Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) made with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data are at an angular resolution of 14.4 arcsec, significantly improving upon the 353-GHz resolution of Planck at 5 arcmin, and allowing for a catalogue of 3528 compact sources in 558 PGCCs. We find that the detected PGCCs have significant sub-structure, with 61 per cent of detected PGCCs having 3 or more compact sources, with filamentary structure also prevalent within the sample. A detection rate of 45 per cent is found across the survey, which is 95 per cent complete to Planck column densities of N H 2 NH2 > 5 × 1021 cm−2. By positionally associating the SCOPE compact sources with YSOs, the star formation efficiency, as measured by the ratio of luminosity to mass, in nearby clouds is found to be similar to that in the more distant Galactic Plane, with the column density distributions also indistinguishable from each other.

To the 2 × 40 t/h heating boiler flue gas, ethanolamine was used for absorption, carbamate – for desorption. The waste heated boiler flue gas was used to heat the absorption and the desorption; the pump was driven by the solar energy. The results showed that the best absorption rate was 82.28%, when the ethanolamine concentration was 40% and the temperature was 40 ∘ C; the energy consumption was 59.82 KJ/mol. The best desorption temperature was 115 ∘ C, the desorption rate was 55%, and its energy consumption was 694.30 KJ/mol. The pump needed 1.49 KJ/h, reduced 42.8 t/year of CO 2 and regenerated 23.54 t/year of CO 2 .

The observation of surface water bodies in all weather conditions and better knowledge about inundation patterns are important for water resource management and flood early warning. Microwave radiometers at 37 GHz were applied to observe and study the inundation pattern in large subtropical floodplains in China, i.e. the Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake floodplains, due to the trade-off between the capability to penetrate hydrometeors and vegetation, revisiting time, and spatial coverage and resolution. Taking the shallow sensing depth at 37 GHz into account, open water, inundated area and water saturated soil surface all determine the surface emittance measured by the radiometer. Thus, Water Saturated Surface (WSS) is defined as the combination of these three land surface elements. In subtropical regions, seasonal changes in vegetation cover and various surface roughness conditions are the major challenges for the observation of surface water bodies with microwave radiometers. Atmospheric attenuation, observation gaps and errors in the microwave observations reduce the quality of daily radiometric observations. To deal with the attenuation due to vegetation and surface roughness, a two-step model was developed: the first step is to retrieve the polarization difference emissivity from Polarization Difference Brightness Temperature (PDBT) at 37 GHz with the simplified radiative transfer model and the vegetation optical thickness at 37 GHz parameterized from Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) ; the second step is to retrieve the fractional area of WSS from the emissivity difference with a linear model, which can be parameterized according to the Qp surface roughness model. The observation of surface water bodies in all weather conditions and better knowledge about inundation patterns are important for water resource management and flood early warning. Microwave radiometers at 37 GHz were applied to observe and study the inundation pattern in large subtropical floodplains in China, i.e. the Poyang Lake and Dongting Lake floodplains, due to the trade-off between the capability to penetrate hydrometeors and vegetation, revisiting time, and spatial coverage and resolution. Taking the shallow sensing depth at 37 GHz into account, open water, inundated area and water saturated soil surface all determine the surface emittance measured by the radiometer. Thus, Water Saturated Surface (WSS) is defined as the combination of these three land surface elements. In subtropical regions, seasonal changes in vegetation cover and various surface roughness conditions are the major challenges for the observation of surface water bodies with microwave radiometers. Atmospheric attenuation, observation gaps and errors in the microwave observations reduce the quality of daily radiometric observations. To deal with the attenuation due to vegetation and surface roughness, a two-step model was developed: the first step is to retrieve the polarization difference emissivity from Polarization Difference Brightness Temperature (PDBT) at 37 GHz with the simplified radiative transfer model and the vegetation optical thickness at 37 GHz parameterized from Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) ; the second step is to retrieve the fractional area of WSS from the emissivity difference with a linear model, which can be parameterized according to the Qp surface roughness model. TSAP includes two stages: (1) identify the spectral features of observation gaps and errors and remove them with a modified boxcar filter; and (2) identify the spectral features of the surface signal and reconstruct it with the Harmonic Analysis of Time Series (HANTS) algorithm. Polarization Difference Brightness Temperature (PDBT) at 37 GHz data were used to illustrate the problems, to explain the implementation of TSAP and to validate this method, due to the PDBT sensitivity to the water content both at the land surface and in the atmosphere. We carried out a case study on a limited heterogeneous crop land and lake area, where the power spectrum of the PDBT time series showed that the harmonic components associated with observation gaps and errors have periods ≤8 days. After applying the modified boxcar filter with a length of 10 days, the RMSD between raw and filtered time series was above 11 K, mainly related to the power reduction in the frequency range associated with observation gaps and errors. Objectives. To understand the current risk of HIV infection and transmission and further elucidate the underlying risk factors among men who have sex with men and women (MSMW) in China. Methods. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of searching through Chinese and English available literature databases between January 2000 and June 2014 to identify articles. Results. Thirty-six articles (including 19,730 MSMW and 53,536 MSMO) met the selection criteria and the aggregated results found that MSMW have significantly higher HIV prevalence than MSMO (6.6% versus 5.4%, OR = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.01-1.58). A higher proportion of MSMW had commercial male partners in the past 6 months (18.3% versus 12.2%, OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.01-2.42). Additionally, substance use in the past 6 months was significantly more frequent among MSMW than MSMO (alcohol use: 27.1% versus 13.1%, OR = 2.53, 95% CI = 2.14-2.99; illicit drug use: 5.3% versus 2.5%, OR = 2.09, 95% CI = 1.48-2.95). Conclusion. A higher proportion of commercial sex and substance use among MSMW may be a potentially indicative factor for significantly higher HIV prevalence compared to MSMO. Targeted interventions should aim at increasing the frequency of HIV/STIs screening and preventing high risk commercial sex and substance use among MSMW to decrease their HIV transmission to the general population.

The soil wetness condition is a useful indicator of inundation hazard in floodplains, such as the Poyang Lake floodplain. Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) passive microwave data were used to monitor water-saturated soil and open water areas of the Poyang Lake floodplain from 2001 to 2008, capturing the inundation patterns of this area in space and time. The polarization difference brightness temperature (PDBT) at 37 GHz is sensitive to the water extension even under dense vegetation. The zero-order radiative transfer model was simplified to retrieve the vertical–horizontal (V–H)-polarized effective emissivity difference from the PDBT at 37 GHz. Vegetation fractional area and vegetation transmission function were derived from NDVI to represent the vegetation attenuation. This effective emissivity difference has a quasi-linear relationship with the fractional area of water-saturated soil and standing water, no matter the frequency. Using the multifrequency-polarization surface emission (Qp) model and the Dobson model of the soil–water mixture, the two segments of this relationship were combined into a quasi-linear model. Comparing the retrieved water-saturated soil and standing water area of Poyang Lake with the lake area obtained from the MODIS and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image at higher spatial resolution, the calculations show a good fit with the MODIS and SAR data, with R2 = 0.7664 and relative RMSE = 17.74%. The cross-correlation analysis shows that the Poyang Lake extension fluctuates with a 5-day time lag with the upstream land area of water-saturated soil and standing water. BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) increase HIV infectivity through local inflammatory processes. Prevalent and incident STIs among people who live with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) are indicators of high-risk sexual behaviors and imply potential spread of HIV. Little is known about the prevalence and incidence of concurrent syphilis and associated risk behaviors among PLWHA in China. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among PLWHA who attended the outpatient clinic of a designated AIDS treatment hospital in Shenyang, China, between March 2009 and May 2013. Physical examinations and syphilis serology were conducted at each visit. A questionnaire on demographic characteristics was also collected. RESULTS: A total of 1010 PLWHA were enrolled, of whom 77.0% were men who have sex with men (MSM). The baseline syphilis prevalence among PLWHA was 19.8% (95% confidence interval [CI]:17.3-22.3%). During follow-up, 78.3% retained in the cohort, and contributed a median follow-up of 9.4 months (interquartile range: 5.9-18.7 months). Syphilis incidence among PLWHA was 18.7 (95% CI: 15.5-21.8) per 100 person years. Mulitvariate logistic analysis showed that receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) (adjusted OR [aOR] = 0.48), older age (≥40 years vs. ≤24 years, aOR = 2.43), being MSM (aOR = 2.30) and having higher baseline HIV viral load (>100,000 copies/mL vs. ≤100,000 copies/mL, aOR = 1.56) were independent predictors for syphilis infection among PLWHA at enrollment (p < 0.05 for all). Mulivariate Cox regression found that receiving ART (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] = 1.81), older age (≥40 years vs. ≤24 years, aHR: 5.17) and MSM status (aHR = 2.68) were independent risk factors for syphilis seroconversion (each p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Syphilis prevalence and incidence were high among PLWHA in Shenyang. A campaign focusing on detection and treatment of syphilis among PLWHA is urgently needed, especially one with a focus on MSM who are at a higher risk for syphil

Optoelectronic devices based on layered materials such as graphene have resulted in significant interest due to their unique properties and potential technological applications. The electric and optoelectronic properties of nano GaTe flakes as layered materials are described in this article. The transistor fabricated from multilayer GaTe shows a p-type action with a hole mobility of about 0.2 cm^2 V^(-1) s^(-1). The gate transistor exhibits a high photoresponsivity of 104 A/W, which is greatly better than that of graphene, MoS_2, and other layered compounds. Meanwhile, the response speed of 6 ms is also very fast. Both the high photoresponsivity and the fast response time described in the present study strongly suggest that multilayer GaTe is a promising candidate for future optoelectronic and photosensitive device applications.

Background: Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has significantly decreased mortality among Chinese HIV patients. However, emerging HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) poses a growing threat to the long-term success and durability of HAART. Methods: Three cross-sectional surveys were conducted across the country from 2004 to 2006, respectively. Patients completed a questionnaire and provided blood for CD4 cell count, HIV viral load (VL), and HIV resistance genotyping. Factors associated with HIVDR were identified by logistic regression. Results: 3667 unique patients were included across the three surveys. Among 2826 treatment-experienced patients, median duration of treatment was 17.4 (IQR 8.6-28.4) months and HIVDR was identified in 543 (19.2%). Factors significantly associated with HIVDR included ART drug distribution location, CD4 cell count, initial HAART regimen, self-reported medication adherence, and province. Conclusions: Virologic failure increased over time on therapy but a significant proportion of patients in failure had no resistance mutations identified, suggesting that treatment adherence is suboptimal and must be emphasized. Due to the significantly higher risk of HIVDR in certain provinces, additional steps to reduce HIVDR should be taken. © 2013 Xing et al.

We describe the new frequency range for Band 1 of 35-52 GHz, a range chosen to maximize the receiver suite's scientific impact. We first describe two key science drivers: 1) the evolution of grains in protoplanetary disks and debris disks, and 2) molecular gas in galaxies during the era of re-ionization. Studies of these topics with Band 1 receivers will significantly expand ALMA's Level 1 Science Goals. In addition, we describe a host of other exciting continuum and line science cases that require ALMA's high sensitivity and angular resolution. For example, ALMA Band 1 continuum data will probe the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect in galaxy clusters, Very Small Grains and spinning dust, ionized jets from young stars, spatial and flaring studies of Sgr A*, the acceleration sites of solar flares, pulsar wind nebulae, radio supernovae, and X-ray binaries. Furthermore, ALMA Band 1 line data will probe chemical differentiation in cloud cores, complex carbon chain molecules, extragalactic radio recombination lines, masers, magnetic fields through Zeeman effect measurements, molecular outflows from young stars, the co-evolution of star formation and active galactic nuclei, and the molecular content of galaxies at z ~ 3. ALMA provides similar to better sensitivities than the JVLA over 35-50 GHz, with differences increasing with frequency. ALMA's smaller antennas and shorter baselines, greater number of baselines, and single-dish capabilities, however, give it a significant edge for observing extended emission, making wide-field maps (mosaics), or attaining high image fidelity, as required by the described science cases., Comment: 74 pages; this document is a major revision of one posted previously as arXiv:0910.1609

Liquid and solid precipitation is abundant in the high elevation, upper reach of the Heihe basin. The development of modern irrigation schemes in the middle reach of the basin is taking up an increasing share of fresh water resources, endangering the oasis and traditional irrigation systems in the lower reach. In this study, the response of vegetation in the Ejina Oasis in the lower reach of the Heihe River to the water yield of the upper catchment was analyzed by time series analysis of monthly observations of precipitation in the upper and lower catchment, river streamflow downstream of the modern irrigation schemes and satellite observations of vegetation index. Firstly, remote sensing data were used to monitor the vegetation dynamic for a long time period. Due to cloud-contamination, atmospheric influence and different solar angles, however, the quality and consistence of time series of remote sensing data is degraded. In this research we used a Fourier Transform method – the Harmonic Analysis of Time Series (HANTS) algorithm – to reconstruct cloud-free NDVI time series data from the Terra-MODIS dataset. Anomalies in precipitation, streamflow, and vegetation index are detected by comparing each year with the average year. The relationship between the anomalies in vegetation growth, the local precipitation and upstream water yield were analyzed. The same approach is used to identify, remove and gap-filling cloud contaminated observations in the satellite data for each year in the dataset. The results showed that: the previous year total runoff had a significant relationship with the vegetation growth in Ejina Oasis and that anomalies in monthly runoff of the Heihe River influenced the phenology of vegetation in the entire oasis during drier years. In this paper, we study the problem of efficiently retrieving all data graphs approximately contained by a query graph, namely similarity search on supergraph containment. We propose a novel and efficient index to boost the efficiency of query processing. We have studied the query processing cost and propose two index construction strategies aimed at optimizing the performance of different types of data graphs: top-down strategy and bottom-up strategy. Moreover, a novel indexing technique is proposed by effectively merging the indexes of individual data graphs; this not only reduces the index size but also further reduces the query processing time. We conduct extensive experiments on real data sets to demonstrate the efficiency and the effectiveness of our techniques. © 2010 IEEE.

Substructure similarity search is to retrieve graphs that approximately contain a given query graph. It has many applications, e.g., detecting similar functions among chemical compounds. The problem is challenging as even testing subgraph containment between two graphs is NP-complete. Hence, existing techniques adopt the filtering-and-verification framework with the focus on developing effective and efficient techniques to remove non-promising graphs. Nevertheless, existing filtering techniques may be still unable to effectively remove many "low" quality candidates. To resolve this, in this paper we propose a novel indexing technique, GrafD-Index, to index graphs according to their "distances" to features. We characterize a tight condition under which the distance-based triangular inequality holds. We then develop lower and upper bounding techniques that exploit the GrafD-Index to (1) prune non-promising graphs and (2) include graphs whose similarities are guaranteed to exceed the given similarity threshold. Considering that the verification phase is not well studied and plays the dominant role in the whole process, we devise efficient algorithms to verify candidates. A comprehensive experiment using real datasets demonstrates that our proposed methods significantly outperform existing methods. © 2010 ACM.

The development of modern irrigation schemes in the middle reach of the basin is taking up an increasing share of fresh water resources, endangering the oasis and traditional irrigation systems in the lower reach. In this study, the response of vegetation in the Ejina Oasis in the lower reach of the Heihe River to the water yield of the upper catchment was analyzed by time series analysis of monthly observations of precipitation in the upper and lower catchment, river streamflow downstream of the modern irrigation schemes and satellite observations of vegetation index. Firstly, remote sensing data were used to monitor the vegetation dynamic for a long time period. Due to cloud-contamination, atmospheric influence and different solar angles, however, the quality and consistence of time series of remote sensing data is degraded. In this research we used a Fourier Transform method – the Harmonic Analysis of Time Series (HANTS) algorithm – to reconstruct cloud-free NDVI time series data from the Terra-MODIS dataset. Anomalies in precipitation, streamflow, and vegetation index are detected by comparing each year with the average year. The relationship between the anomalies in vegetation growth, the local precipitation and upstream water yield were analyzed. The same approach is used to identify, remove and gap-filling cloud contaminated observations in the satellite data for each year in the dataset. The results showed that: the previous year total runoff had a significant relationship with the vegetation growth in Ejina Oasis and that anomalies in monthly runoff of the Heihe River influenced the phenology of vegetation in the entire oasis during drier years. Substructure similarity search is to retrieve graphs that approximately contain a given query graph. It has many applications, e.g., detecting similar functions among chemical compounds. The problem is challenging as even testing subgraph containment between two graphs is NP-complete. Hence, existing techniques adopt the filtering-and-verification framework with the focus on developing effective and efficient techniques to remove non-promising graphs. Nevertheless, existing filtering techniques may be still unable to effectively remove many "low" quality candidates. To resolve this, in this paper we propose a novel indexing technique, GrafD-Index, to index graphs according to their "distances" to features. We characterize a tight condition under which the distance-based triangular inequality holds. We then develop lower and upper bounding techniques that exploit the GrafD-Index to (1) prune non-promising graphs and (2) include graphs whose similarities are guaranteed to exceed the given similarity threshold. Considering that the verification phase is not well studied and plays the dominant role in the whole process, we devise efficient algorithms to verify candidates. A comprehensive experiment using real datasets demonstrates that our proposed methods significantly outperform existing methods. © 2010 ACM.

The extractable energy value from all sources of heat energy generated underground during the active life of a deep mine is discussed, with particular reference to the recovery of energy from mine waters. Dynamic models for an industrial nickel smelter off-gas system, tackling hazardous sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, are described. The models were developed using mass continuity, the first law of thermodynamics, the ideal gas state equation and momentum conservation laws, using five approximating assumptions. Dynamic modelling equations were developed for the units in the furnace and converter off-gas system whilst taking into account various variables such as the louvre in the furnace off-gas, the fans and blowers and the electrostatic precipitator gas pressure. SO2 leakage to the atmosphere is prevented by controlling the gas pressure to have negative values in the roaster off-gas system. The fan and blower were found to change the gas pressure effectively and quickly but the effects of the manipulated input variables were significantly reduced by the leakage area. Air in-leakage, controlled by a louvre, is intentionally introduced in the furnace off-gas system to cool down the off-gas temperature. Simulation results show that increasing louvre opening has the effect of reducing the louvre gas temperature but has the opposite effect on the freeboard temperature and pressure. We present a set of compelling science cases for the ALMA Band 1 receiver suite. For these cases, we assume in tandem the updated nominal Band 1 frequency range of 35-50 GHz with a likely extension up to 52 GHz; together these frequencies optimize the Band 1 science return. The scope of the science cases ranges from nearby stars to the re-ionization edge of the Universe. Two cases provide additional leverage on the present ALMA Level One Science Goals and are seen as particularly powerful motivations for building the Band 1 Receiver suite: (1) detailing the evolution of grains in protoplanetary disks, as a complement to the gas kinematics, requires continuum observations out to ~35 GHz (~9mm); and (2) detecting CO 3-2 line emission from galaxies like the Milky Way during the epoch of re-ionization, i.e., 6 < z < 10, also requires Band 1 receiver coverage. The range of Band 1 science is wide, however, and includes studies of very small dust grains in the ISM, pulsar wind nebulae, radio supernovae, X-ray binaries, the Galactic Center (i.e., Sgr A*), dense cloud cores, complex carbon-chain molecules, masers, magnetic fields in the dense ISM, jets and outflows from young stars, distant galaxies, and galaxy clusters (i.e., the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect). A comparison of ALMA and the Jansky VLA (JVLA) at the same frequencies of Band 1 finds similar sensitivity performance at 40-50 GHz, with a slight edge for ALMA at higher frequencies (e.g., within a factor of 2 for continuum observations). With its larger number of instantaneous baselines, however, ALMA Band 1data will have greater fidelity than those from the JVLA at similar frequencies., Comment: 62 pages, 16 figures
