The commissioning of newly developed, complex engineer-to-order (ETO) products, such as plants, buildings, and ships, entails the testing and validation of installed systems prior to operation. Challenges related to the delivery of such commissioning services are manifold, including high levels of uncertainty and challenging information management. In this paper, the question of how configurator technology can be developed and utilised for the specification of commissioning services is investigated. Specifically, while several studies have demonstrated the significant benefits of applying configurators to support product specification processes in ETO companies, none have explored their usefulness in relation to commissioning services. Thus, based on the literature pertaining to commissioning services and product configuration, a five-step approach to the development of commissioning service configurators is developed. The approach was tested in a case company, resulting in the creation of a commissioning configurator. The approach was well received by company employees. Moreover, its use resulted in a commissioning service configurator that reduced the service specification time by more than 70% and the number of people required for the specification by 40%. Other identified benefits included a reduction in planning efforts, improved utilisation of expert knowledge, and improved resource allocation.

The boundaries between products and services are vanishing and offers such as hybrid product service bundles, are becoming increasingly important. These solutions are referred to as Product Service Systems (PSS), which address individual customer needs as problem-oriented solutions. In order to enable the configuration of such systems as well as the possibility of planning and supporting services on the basis of a holistic model, a data model that contains both product and service information as well as their dependencies, is required. For this purpose, existing CAD models must be extended with further information. These are e.g. maintenance intervals of parts, costs of the parts, or also index numbers for the complexity of installation. This paper shows how to enrich a CAD model by integrating information into it and creating an interface with Excel. Thereby, the model can be used by different actors in the PSS for configuration and development, service planning and support of service technicians. Finally the approach for enriching a CAD model is implemented using the example of an engine test bench.

This work investigates the use of enterprise models for service configuration with a focus onknowledge related to organizational roles. Starting from an industrial case, it presents anapproach to extract a role’s information demand from an enterprise model and to use thisas initial configuration for agent-based services. In addition to the meta-model included inthe enterprise modeling language, the use of a common ontology is proposed which capturesboth, the perspective of information demand and services. The architecture of the agentbasedservices is following the idea to characterize all actors by their roles and to representthem by sets of services. This approach facilitates self-organization in the service level.The main contributions of the paper are (1) to show that a role’s information demand isrelevant for service configuration, (2) to present a way of extracting information demand fromenterprise models, and (3) to extend an approach for SOA-based enterprise representationwith information demand.

This paper proposes a model-based technique for lowering the entrance barrier for service providers to register services with a marketplace broker, such that the service is rapidly configured to utilize the brokerpsilas local service delivery management components. Specifically, it uses process modeling for supporting the execution steps of a service and shows how service delivery functions (e.g. payment points) ldquolocalrdquo to a service broker can be correctly configured into the process model. By formalizing the different operations in a service delivery function (like payment or settlement) and their allowable execution sequences (full payments must follow partial payments), including cross-function dependencies, it shows how through tool support, the non-technical user can quickly configure service delivery functions in a consistent and complete way.

Individual services and tariffs existed briefly in the beginning of telecommunications history 150 years ago but faded away over time. Service provisioning evolved into the current supplier-centric situation which has many limitations and disadvantages. This thesis re-embraces the user-centric service provisioning and tariffing philosophy and applies it to current mobile communication services setting, which differs significantly in scale and scope from the historical practices. A design methodology and tool for the determination of individualized mobile services and tariffs is provided, and benefits to both the user and the supplier are evaluated. The design has three aspects. The first involves the construction of a conceptual framework consisting of the behavioral models of the user and the supplier (firm) and a game theoretical negotiation mechanism to determine individual services and tariffs. Second is the operationalization of the conceptual framework in a computational design with methods, computational models, negotiation algorithms, risk metrics and a prototype implementation. Third is the extension of the individual services and tariffs concept to a community setting via a proposed community business model. Two evaluations are performed. First, for the firm-based design, a user survey is conducted and computational cases, that address value-added mobile services and generic mobile service bundles, are developed. The numerical analyses show that the users always achieve gains in utility. The benefits to the supplier include adjustable risk-profit equilibrium points, increased network traffic and reduced churn. Second, two case studies on communities are conducted. The results demonstrate that the proposed business model of community-based individual service provisioning and tariffing can meet the demands of their members precisely and address both affordability and sustainability issues. This paper presents results on mass customization of wireless communications services and tariffs. It advocates for a user-centric view of wireless service configuration and pricing as opposed to present-day service catalog options. The focus is on design methodology and tools for such individual services and tariffs, using altogether information compression, negotiation algorithms, and risk portfolio analysis. We first analyze the user and supplier needs and aspirations. We then introduce the systematic design-oriented approach which can be applied. The implications of this approach for users and suppliers are discussed based on an end-user survey and on model-based calculations. It is shown that users can achieve desired service bundle cost reduction, while suppliers can improve significantly their risk-profit equilibrium points, reduce churn and simplify provisioning.
