Herein, we demonstrate that cocrystallization of tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)hexahydropyrene and pyrene derivatives (CP-Hp and CP-Py, respectively) yields non-stoichiometric mixed frameworks through networking via hydrogen bonding. The composition ratio of CP-Hp and CP-Py in the framework was determined by single crystalline X-ray crystallographic analysis, indicating that the mixed frameworks were formed over a wide range of composition ratios. Furthermore, microscopic Raman spectroscopy on the single crystal indicates that the components are not uniformly distributed such as ideal solid solution, but are done gradationally or inhomogeneously.

When new covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are designed, the main efforts are typically focused on selecting specific building blocks with certain geometries and properties to control the structure and function of the final COFs. The nature of the linkage (imine, boroxine, vinyl, etc.) between these building blocks naturally also defines their properties. However, besides the linkage type, the orientation, i.e., the constitutional isomerism of these linkages, has rarely been considered so far as an essential aspect. In this work, three pairs of constitutionally isomeric imine-linked donor-acceptor (D-A) COFs are synthesized, which are different in the orientation of the imine bonds (D-C=N-A (DCNA) and D-N=C-A (DNCA)). The constitutional isomers show substantial differences in their photophysical properties and consequently in their photocatalytic performance. Indeed, all DCNA COFs show enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution performance than the corresponding DNCA COFs. Besides the imine COFs shown here, it can be concluded that the proposed concept of constitutional isomerism of linkages in COFs is quite universal and should be considered when designing and tuning the properties of COFs.

The chiral-induced spin selectivity effect enables the application of chiral organic materials for spintronics and spin-dependent electrochemical applications. It is demonstrated on various chiral monolayers, in which their conversion efficiency is limited. On the other hand, relatively high spin polarization (SP) is observed on bulk chiral materials; however, their poor electronic conductivities limit their application. Here, the design of chiral MoS₂ with a high SP and high conductivity is reported. Chirality is introduced to the MoS₂ layers through the intercalation of methylbenzylamine molecules. This design approach activates multiple tunneling channels in the chiral layers, which results in an SP as high as 75%. Furthermore, the spin selectivity suppresses the production of H₂O₂ by-product and promotes the formation of ground state O₂ molecules during the oxygen evolution reaction. These potentially improve the catalytic activity of chiral MoS₂. The synergistic effect is demonstrated as an interplay of the high SP and the high catalytic activity of the MoS₂ layer on the performance of the chiral MoS₂ for spin-dependent electrocatalysis. This novel approach employed here paves way for the development of other novel chiral systems for spintronics and spin-dependent electrochemical applications.

The critical dimension of semiconductor devices is approaching the single-nm regime, and a variety of practical devices of this scale are targeted for production. Planar structures of nano-devices are still the center of fabrication techniques, which limit further integration of devices into a chip. Extension into 3D space is a promising strategy for future; however, the surface interaction in 3D nanospace make it hard to integrate nanostructures with ultrahigh aspect ratios. Here we report a unique technique using high-energy charged particles to produce free-standing 1D organic nanostructures with high aspect ratios over 100 and controlled number density. Along the straight trajectory of particles penetrating the films of various sublimable organic molecules, 1D nanowires were formed with approximately 10~15 nm thickness and controlled length. An all-dry process was developed to isolate the nanowires, and planar or coaxial heterojunction structures were built into the nanowires. Electrical and structural functions of the developed standing nanowire arrays were investigated, demonstrating the potential of the present ultrathin organic nanowire systems.

We report herein a unique technique to produce uniform free-standing 1D nanostructures with extremely high aspect ratios over 100, borrowing from technology developed for cancer radiotherapy with high-energy charged particles. Along the straight trajectory of particles penetrating the condensed phase of a variety of sublimable organic molecules, 1D nanowires were formed with single-nm thickness and perfectly controlled length. An all-dry process was developed to isolate the nanowire plexus, and hetero-junction structures could be facilely built into the nanowires by the new technique. Coaxial extension of nanowires by a chemical process allowed us to freely design the nanowires both in axial and radial directions.

Water soluble 2D crystalline monolayers of fullerenes grow on planar assemblies of engineered consensus tetratricopeptide repeat proteins. Designed fullerene-coordinating tyrosine clamps on the protein introduce specific fullerene binding sites, which facilitate fullerene nucleation. Through reciprocal interactions between the components, the hybrid material assembles into two-dimensional 2 nm thick structures with crystalline order, that conduct photo-generated charges. Thus, the protein-fullerene hybrid material is a demonstration of the developments toward functional materials with protein-based precision control of functional elements.

Photoreduction of CO2 to fuels offers a promising strategy for managing the global carbon balance using renewable solar energy. But the decisive process of oriented photogenerated electron delivery presents a considerable challenge. Here, we report the construction of intermolecular cascaded pi-conjugation channels for powering CO2 photoreduction by modifying both intramolecular and intermolecular conjugation of conjugated polymers (CPs). This coordination of dual conjugation is firstly proved by theoretical calculations and transient spectroscopies, showcasing alkynyl-removed CPs blocking the delocalization of electrons and in turn delivering the localized electrons through the intermolecular cascaded channels to active sites. Therefore, the optimized CPs (N-CP-D) exhibiting CO evolution activity of 2247 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) and revealing a remarkable enhancement of 138-times compared to unmodified CPs (N-CP-A). While conversion of CO2 to fuels may offer a bio-inspired means to renewably utilize fossil fuel emission, most materials demonstrate poor activities for CO2 reduction. Here, authors construct conjugated polymers that modulate photo-induced electron transfer to CO2 reduction catalysts.

Damage to DNA via dissociative electron attachment has been well-studied in both the gas and condensed phases; however, understanding this process in bulk solution at a fundamental level is still a challenge. Here, we use a picosecond pulse of a high energy electron beam to generate electrons in liquid diethylene glycol and observe the electron attachment dynamics to ribothymidine at different stages of electron relaxation. Our transient spectroscopic results reveal that the quasi-free electron with energy near the conduction band effectively attaches to ribothymidine leading to a new absorbing species that is characterized in the UV-visible region. This species exhibits a nearly concentration-independent decay with a time constant of ~350 ps. From time-resolved studies under different conditions, combined with data analysis and theoretical calculations, we assign this intermediate to an excited anion radical that undergoes N1-C1′ glycosidic bond dissociation rather than relaxation to its ground state.

Porous titanium oxide materials are attractive for energy-related applications. However, many suffer from poor stability and crystallinity. Here we present a robust nanoporous metal–organic framework (MOF), comprising a Ti12O15 oxocluster and a tetracarboxylate ligand, achieved through a scalable synthesis. This material undergoes an unusual irreversible thermally induced phase transformation that generates a highly crystalline porous product with an infinite inorganic moiety of a very high condensation degree. Preliminary photophysical experiments indicate that the product after phase transformation exhibits photoconductive behavior, highlighting the impact of inorganic unit dimensionality on the alteration of physical properties. Introduction of a conductive polymer into its pores leads to a significant increase of the charge separation lifetime under irradiation. Additionally, the inorganic unit of this Ti-MOF can be easily modified via doping with other metal elements. The combined advantages of this compound make it a promising functional scaffold for practical applications.

Here, we report the synthesis of K x Fe2(BDP)3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 2; BDP2- = 1,4-benzenedipyrazolate), which exhibits full charge delocalization within the parent framework and charge mobilities comparable to technologically relevant polymers and ceramics. Through a battery of spectroscopic methods, computational techniques and single-microcrystal field-effect transistor measurements, we demonstrate that fractional reduction of Fe2(BDP)3 results in a metal-organic framework that displays a nearly 10,000-fold enhancement in conductivity along a single crystallographic axis. The attainment of such properties in a K x Fe2(BDP)3 field-effect transistor represents the realization of a general synthetic strategy for the creation of new porous conductor-based devices.

A series of donor–acceptor small molecules based on electrondeficient benzothiadiazole (BTD) and electron-rich benzodithiophene (BDT) featuring an A-D-A structure is presented. Exhaustive spectroscopic, electrochemical, and computational studies evidence their electroactive nature and their ability to form well-ordered thin films with broad visible absorptions and low band gaps (ca. 2 eV). Time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) studies unveil unexpected n-type charge transport displaying high electron mobilities around 0.1 cm2V1 s 1 . Despite numerous organic semiconductors being developed during the past decade, C70 derivatives are predominantly used as electron acceptors in efficient polymer solar cells (PSCs). However, as-prepared C70 mono-adducts intrinsically comprise regioisomers that would mask individual device performances depending on the substituent position on C70. Herein, we separate the regioisomers of C70 mono-adducts for PSC applications for the first time. Systematic investigations of the substituent position effect using a novel symmetric C70 mono-adduct ([70]NCMA) and a prevalent, high-performance one ([70]PCBM) reveals that we can control the structures of the blend films with conjugated polymers and thereby improve the PSC performances by regioisomer separation. Our approach demonstrates the significance of exploring the best-matching regioisomer of C70 mono-adducts with high-performance conjugated polymers, which would achieve a remarkable progress in PSC devices.

The precise control over the organization of photoactive components at the nanoscale is one of the main challenges for the generation of new and sophisticated macroscopically ordered materials with enhanced properties. In this work we present a novel bioinspired approach using protein-based building blocks for the arrangement of photo and electroactive porphyrin derivatives. We used a designed repeat protein scaffold with demonstrated unique features that allow for the control of their structure, functionality, and assembly. Our designed domains act as exact biomolecular templates to organize porphyrin molecules at the required distance. The hybrid conjugates retain the structure and assembly properties of the protein scaffold and display the spectroscopic features of orderly aggregated porphyrins along the protein structure. Cyclobuteno[3,4:1,2][60]fullerenes have been prepared in a straightforward manner by a simple reaction between [60]fullerene and readily available allenoates or alkynoates as organic reagents under basic and mild conditions. The chemical structure of the new modified fullerenes has been determined by standard spectroscopic techniques and confirmed by X-Ray diffraction analysis. We demonstrate the fabrication of a new class of epitaxial porphyrin metal-organic framework thin films whose photophysical properties can be tuned by the introduction of electron-donating diphenylamine (DPA) groups into the porphyrin skeleton. The attachment of DPA groups results in strongly improved absorption characteristics, yielding the highest photocarrier generation efficiency reported so far. DFT calculations identify a shift of the charge localization pattern in the VBM (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital), confirming that the introduction of the DPA groups is the main reason for the shift of the optical absorption spectrum and the improved photocurrent generation., QC 20161012

Mechano-induced phase transitions in organic crystalline materials, which can alter their properties, have received much attention. However, most mechano-responsive molecular crystals exhibit crystal-to-amorphous phase transitions, and the intermolecular interaction patterns in the daughter phase are difficult to characterize. We have investigated phenyl(phenylisocyanide)gold(I) (1) and phenyl(3,5-dimethylphenylisocyanide)gold(I) (2) complexes, which exhibit a mechano-triggered single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transition. Previous reports of complexes 1 and 2 have focused on the relationships between the crystalline structures and photoluminescence properties; in this work we have focused on other aspects. The face index measurements of complexes 1 and 2 before and after the mechano-induced phase transitions have indicated that they undergo non-epitaxial phase transitions without a rigorous orientational relationship between the mother and daughter phases. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses revealed the phase transition of complex 1 to be enthalpically driven by the formation of new aurophilic interactions. In contrast, the phase transition of complex 2 was found to be entropically driven, with the closure of an empty void in the mother phase. Scanning electron microscopy observation showed that the degree of the charging effect of both complexes 1 and 2 was changed by the phase transitions, which suggests that the formation of the aurophilic interactions affords more effective conductive pathways. Moreover, flash-photolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements revealed that complex 1 increased in conductivity after the phase change, whereas the conductivity of complex 2 decreased. These contrasting results were explained by the different patterns in the aurophilic interactions. The tetratopic ligand tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoate (H[subscript 4]TTFTB) is used to synthesize Zn[subscript 2](TTFTB), a new metal–organic framework that contains columnar stacks of tetrathiafulvalene and benzoate-lined infinite one-dimensional channels. The new MOF remains porous upon desolvation and exhibits charge mobility commensurate with some of the best organic semiconductors, confirmed by flash-photolysis-time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements. Zn[subscript 2](TTFTB) represents the first example of a permanently porous MOF with high charge mobility and may inspire further exploration of the electronic properties of these materials., United States. We developed a new method for synthesizing an organic-soluble insulated molecular wire (IMW) using permethylated cyclodextrin (PMCD). The IMW obtained using this method is highly soluble in a variety of organic solvents and has a high covering ratio, regioregularity, rigidity, photoluminescence efficiency, and interchain hole mobility.

Star-shaped compounds with three or four oligothiophene units linked by an organosilicon core were prepared and their hole-transport capabilities were studied. A top-contact type thin film transistor (TFT) with a vapour-deposited film of tris[(ethylterthiophenyl)dimethylsilyl]methylsilane (3T(3)Si(4)) showed field-effect mobility (mu(FET)) of 4.4 x 10-5 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), while the device with the carbon centred analogue tris[(ethylterthiophenyl) dimethylsilyl] methane (3T(3)Si(3)C) showed no TFT activity. Intrinsic intramolecular hole mobility of 3T(3)Si(4) and 3T(3)Si(3)C was determined by time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements to be 8 x 10(-2) and 2 x 10(-2) cm(2) V-1 s(-1), respectively, arising from higher degree of s-p interaction in 3T(3)Si(4). To know more about the effects of the organosilicon core structures on the intermolecular hole mobility, we calculated internal reorganization energies for hole transfer at the (U) B3LYP/6-311+ G(d, p)//(U) B3LYP/6-31G(d) level, which suggested smoother intermolecular charge transfer in the silicon derivative than the carbon and germanium analogues. Star-shaped compounds with quarterthiophene units behave in a different manner from the terthiophene derivatives and tris[(ethylquarterthiophenyl) dimethylsilyl] methane (4T(3)Si(3)C) showed higher TFT mobility of mu(FET) = 1.2 10-3 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) than its silicon analogue (4T(3)Si(4): mu(FET) = 5.4 10(-4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1)). This is probably due to the more condensed packing of 4T3Si3C in the film, arising from the shorter Si-C bonding. Compounds with four terthiophene units were also prepared and tetrakis[(ethylterthiophenyl)dimethylsilyl] silane (3T(4)Si(5)) showed the mobility of mu(FET) = 2.0 x 10-4 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), higher than that of 3T(3)Si(4), indicating the potential of tetrakis(oligothiophenyl) compounds as the TFT materials.
