The history of mathematics education is an interdisciplinary research area that is experiencing a significant development and this book presents recent work in this area. This book is the result of the sixth conference ICHME (In-ternational Conference on the History of Mathematics Education) that took place at CIRM, Luminy (France) from 16th to 20th of September 2019. Nowadays, the history of education is of the utmost importance for assessing the general development of the educational system(s) in which mathematics education occurs. Usually, the history of education is confined to history within a given civilization, country or nation. However, the quality of the research for a given nation is enhanced when situated among various specific cases, and comparative studies provide essential tools to broaden the perspectives to an international level. Moreover, mathematics, as a school discipline, has always functioned at the crossroads between general education and professional training, thus relating its teaching history to professional working environments as well. The themes dealt with in this book reflect this wide area of research. The book contains 28 chapters grouped in four parts concerning teaching of particular mathematical domains, teaching in cultural and national contexts, pedagogical movements and reforms, and methods of teaching.

Ergänzungen zur frühen Geschichte der Gesellschaft für Didaktik der Mathematik aus Anlass der im Heft 101 (Juli 2016) der Mitteilungen der GDM veröffentlichten Beiträge zur Geschichte der GDM von drei Personen: von Michael Toepell, der als Schriftführer 2004 eine geschichtliche Darstellung publiziert hatte; von Andreas Vohns als aktuellem Schriftführer, der Toepells Beitrag aktualisiert und ergänzt hat; sowie vom ersten Vorsitzenden Rudolf vom Hofe in dessen Vorwort zum Heft 101.

Nosso objetivo é seguir o caminho de Cálculo Diferencial e Integral na educação geral/ensino secundário e da educação profissional/ensino técnico no Brasil. Para realizar essa tarefa traçou-se um panorama histórico do século 20, tendo como ponto de partida a Conferência Internacional sobre o Ensino de Matemática de Paris, em 1914, a legislação brasileira e os contextos políticos e econômicos que, por vezes, influenciaram a inclusão ou a extinção do Cálculo dos programas nacionais, e também acompanhar a trajetória do Cálculo na disciplina Matemática desde Escola Técnica Federal de São Paulo até sua transformação em Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica onde foi implementado, pela primeira vez, o ensino médio.

Since the creation of the International Study Group on Ethnomathematics, several researchers have debated on how could or should a theory of ethnomathematics exist, and, if so, how it is to be conceptualized. So far, there exists no consensus on how this theory should be defined.During the last International Conference on Ethnomathematics (ICEm-4) in Towson, Maryland (July, 2010), Rik Pinxten emphasized on the necessity of reopening this debate. Ethnomathematics will only be acknowledged by other scientific communities if we, as ethnomathematicians, are able to establish a proper conceptualization of this field of study.This article aims to at least one possible approach to a conceptualization of a theory of ethnomathematics. As we will show, this theory needs to be regarded as an interdisciplinary discipline that covers theories from both the exact and social sciences., Desde la creación del Grupo Internacional de Estudios Etnomatemáticos, diversos investigadores han debatido sobre cómo podría o debería existir la teoría de las Etnomatemáticas y si ese es el caso, sobre cómo debería ser conceptualizada. Hasta este momento no existe consenso sobre cómo debería ser definida esta teoría.Durante la conferencia internacional de Etnomatemáticas (ICEm-4) en Towson, Maryland (julio, 2010), Rik Pinxten enfatizó en la necesidad de reabrir este debate. Las Etnomatemáticas solo podrán ser reconocidas por otras comunidades científicas solo si, como Etnomatemáticos, se es posible establecer una conceptualización apropiada para este campo de estudio. Este artículo tiene como objetivo dar al menos una aproximación sobre la conceptualización de una teoría de la Etnomatemáticas. In this paper, we discuss the context for the development of geography from the seventeenth century when it became liberated from its function in the service of the different Christian faiths; we discuss the importance of the division of the Protestant confession into the Lutheran and the Reformed one for the process of secularization and for the establishment of geography as a modern science. We analyse the fundamental contribution by the Lutheran Bernhard Varen whose volume General Geography constitutes the paradigm for this new science. At that time, Geography was considered to be a branch of mathematics, and this book offers us insights into both, mathematical notations and mathematical procedures. We analyse, in particular, the use of the decimal number notation for nonintegral numbers and also some applications of trigonometry, comparing the original edition with the major re-editions of this seminal work., Neste artigo, discutimos o contexto do desenvolvimento da Geografia que, no século XVII, liberou-se do seu papel nas diferentes fés cristãs, bem como a importância da cisão dos Protestantes, em Luteranos e Calvinistas, para o processo de secularização, e o conseguinte estabelecimento da Geografia como ciência moderna. Analisamos a contribuição fundamental do luterano Bernhard Varen, cuja obra Geografia Geral apresenta o paradigma dessa nova ciência. Naquela época, a Geografia era considerada um ramo da matemática, e esta obra nos dá indícios sobre notações e conceitos matemáticos utilizados naquele século. Analisamos, particularmente, o uso da notação decimal de números não inteiros e algumas aplicações de conceitos trigonométricos, comparando a edição original com as principais reedições desta obra.

La investigación sobre historia de la ciencia islámica se ha visto a menudo autorestringida. Este artículo aborda recientes resultados de la historia de la ciencia moderna y desarrolla algunas categorías generales para el análisis de los marcos estructurales en historia de la ciencia. La aplicación de estas categorías al caso de la ciencia en la civilización islámica y sus instituciones arroja nueva luz sobre el tema tan frecuentemente debatido de su declive. Especial énfasis se pone en el impacto de las instituciones benéficas como estructura dominante y en su relación con las estructuras posibilitadas y financiadas por el estado., Research on the history of Islamic science has often been self-restricted. The present article discusses recent achievements of history of science for modern times and develops some general categories for analyzing structural patterns in the history of science. The application of these categories to the case of science in the Islamic civilization and its institutions sheds new light on the frequently debated issue of a latter's decline. Particular emphasis is put on the impact of charitable foundations as the dominant institutional structure and on their relation to structures enabled and financed by the state.

La investigación sobre historia de la ciencia islámica se ha visto a menudo autorestringida. Este artículo aborda recientes resultados de la historia de la ciencia moderna y desarrolla algunas categorías generales para el análisis de los marcos estructurales en historia de la ciencia. La aplicación de estas categorías al caso de la ciencia en la civilización islámica y sus instituciones arroja nueva luz sobre el tema tan frecuentemente debatido de su declive.
