Landraces are described as genetically diverse, dynamic populations of unimproved crops. However, studying the development of a landrace population over longer periods of time has rarely been done due to a lack of suitable archaeological materials. Plant material culture can offer unique insights into the ways of life of prehistoric societies; however, its perishable nature has prevented a thorough understanding of its diverse and complex uses. Sites with exceptional preservation of organic materials provide a unique opportunity for further research. The burial site of Cueva de los Murciélagos in southern Iberia, uncovered during 19th-century mining activities, contained the best-preserved hunter-gatherer basketry in southern Europe, together with other unique organic artifacts associated with the first farming communities, such as sandals and a wooden hammer. We present 14 14C dates for the perishable artifacts (N = 76), situating the assemblage between the Early and Middle Holocene (c. 7500 to 4200 cal BCE). Our integrated analysis includes raw material determination and technological and chrono-cultural contextualization of this unique and important set of materials.

The indigenous population of the Canary Islands, which colonized the archipelago around the 3rd century CE, provides both a window into the past of North Africa and a unique model to explore the effects of insularity. We generate genome-wide data from 40 individuals from the seven islands, dated between the 3rd–16rd centuries CE. Along with components already present in Moroccan Neolithic populations, the Canarian natives show signatures related to Bronze Age expansions in Eurasia and trans-Saharan migrations. The lack of gene flow between islands and constant or decreasing effective population sizes suggest that populations were isolated. While some island populations maintained relatively high genetic diversity, with the only detected bottleneck coinciding with the colonization time, other islands with fewer natural resources show the effects of insularity and isolation. Finally, consistent genetic differentiation between eastern and western islands points to a more complex colonization process than previously thought.

The Canary Islands were initially colonized around 200 CE by North African Berber populations who brought with them domestic plants and animals. These communities remained isolated until the arrival of Europeans in the Late Middle Ages which triggered the conquest of the archipelago. Its geostrategic location in the framework of Atlantic expansion facilitated the arrival of people, knowledge, goods, plants, and animals which served to shape the new Canarian society. This study explores the dietary practices of this period through the zooarchaeological analysis of the faunal remains recovered at the Hospital de San Martín (fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries), Las Palmas (Gran Canaria, Spain). Our results suggest that caprines were the main taxa consumed. This follows both the pre-colonial Indigenous tradition and, according to historical sources, the subsequent European period. The faunal assemblage recovered also reveals the first directly radiocarbon-dated cases in the Canary Islands of three hitherto unknown species: cattle, chicken, and rabbit. Moreover, the results evidence a progressive increase throughout the Modern Era of chicken and rabbit, and that translocating these new species to the archipelago during the European expansion led to a diversification of meat resources.

Radiocarbon dates, religious and cultural burial evidence indicate that this site represents one of the earliest Islamic Arab burials in the Levant during the Late Antiquity period. Interestingly, we found genomic similarity to a genotyped group of modern-day Bedouins and Saudi rather than to most neighbouring Levantine groups. This is highlighted through substantial Neolithic Levant ancestry in our samples, inviting an alternative scenario of long-term continuity in this region. This raises questions about the influence of ancient populations and historical migrations to genetic structure in the Middle East. As our study represents the first genomic analysis of an early Islamic burial in the Levant, we discuss our findings and possible historic scenarios in light of forces such as genetic drift and their possible interaction with religious and cultural processes.

During the Early Neolithic in the Near East, particularly from the mid ninth millennium cal BC onwards, human iconography became more widespread. Explanations for this development, however, remain elusive. This article presents a unique assemblage of flint artefacts from the Middle Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (eighth millennium BC) site of Kharaysin in Jordan. Contextual, morphological, statistical and use-wear analyses of these artefacts suggest that they are not tools but rather human figurines. Their close association with burial contexts suggests that they were manufactured and discarded during mortuary rituals and remembrance ceremonies that included the extraction, manipulation and redeposition of human remains.

Cremation is an unusual burial practice in the Neolithic of the Near East. At Kharaysin, a Pre-Pottery Neolithic site in Jordan, we found a secondary burial with evidence of burnt human bones. This paper assesses (1) the intentionality of fire-induced alterations on human bones, (2) the pre-burning condition of the human remains, and (3) their significance within the burial customs of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic in the Near East. Burial SU-815 was a secondary multiple burial with burnt and unburnt human remains from at least three adult individuals. Directly dated at 8010 ± 30 BP (7058–6825 cal BC), it corresponds to the Late Pre-Potttery Neolithic B (LPPNB). Macroscopic changes in human remains were analysed to investigate the circumstances of burning. Some bones were selected for mineralogical and compositional analysis through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Colour changes, fractures, cracking, and chemical changes on bones were identified as resulting from fire-induced alterations. Our results show that the bones were intentionally burnt when they were already skeletonised or almost dry. This intentional manipulation using fire happened after other burial practices took place. After burning, the bones were collected and transported to this burial during a final episode. Fire-induced manipulation or cremation was not a significant development of the habitual burial practice, but evidence from Kharaysin shows an innovation in handling the human remains. Therefore, this case provides new insight into the complexity and variability of burial customs within the Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic B in Southern Levant.

Cremation is a widespread funerary practice that aims to burn the body and create a new appearance of human remains. It has been interpreted as a ritual transition that includes a sequence of acts and processes aimed at commemorating the dead on an individual and collective scale. In the Near East, fire-induced manipulation or cremation was not a usual burial practice during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic. In this contribution, we present the geochemical (X-ray fluorescence), mineralogical (X-ray Diffraction) and spectroscopic (Raman spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and (Electron Paramagnetic Resonance) analysis of bones from a Late Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (ca. 9000 yr cal BP) burial in Kharaysin site (Quneya, Zarqa) in northwest Jordan. We discuss the data obtained by the different analytical methods reviewing the state of the art of each analytical method to infer bone burning palaeotemperatures. Finally, it is demonstrated the burned character of the analysed bones, confirming the earliest presence of cremated human bones in a funerary context of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic of the Near East in Kharaysin. This fact provides a new insight into the complexity and variability of burial customs within the Pre-Pottery Neolithic in Levant.

[EN] Kharaysin is a Pre-Pottery Neolithic A and Pre-Pottery Neolithic B site, dated between the end of the 10th millennium and the first half of the 8th millennium cal BC. It is located at the village of Quneya, by the Zarqa River, with 25 ha in extension. Up to the present, four phases of occupation have been discovered, two corresponding to the PPNA and two to the PPNB. The abundant instruments, human, animal and botanical remains, figurines and so on recovered in Kharaysin allow us considering Kharaysin as a key site for understanding the first sedentary villages and the process of invention of agriculture and livestock in northern Jordan., [ES] Kharaysin es un yacimiento datado en el Neolítico Precerámico A y B, entre finales del x y la primera mitad del viii milenio cal a. C., situado en el pueblo de Quneya, junto al río Zarqa, con 25 ha de extensión. Por el momento se han detectado cuatro fases de ocupación: dos correspondientes al Precerámico A y otras dos al B. La abundancia de restos humanos, de utillaje, faunísticos y arqueobotánicos recuperados hace de Kharaysin un yacimiento clave para comprender los orígenes de la agricultura y la ganadería, así como el proceso de sedentarización de las poblaciones en el norte de Jordania.

La Esparragosa es un yacimiento neolítico situado en la banda atlántica, en el entorno de la Bahía de Cádiz, en la orilla norte del estrecho de Gibraltar (Chiclana de la Frontera, Cádiz, España). En esta obra hemos presentado su enmarque geográfico y geológico y su proximidad al litoral, pero también hemos podido comprobar la riqueza de recursos del entorno (agua, materias primas líticas, fauna terrestre, fauna marina, vegetales, sal…), que fueron explotados por las sociedades tribales que ocuparon el asentamiento.

The extent to which prehistoric migrations of farmers influenced the genetic pool of western North Africans remains unclear. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Neolithization process may have happened through the adoption of innovations by local Epipaleolithic communities or by demic diffusion from the Eastern Mediterranean shores or Iberia. Here, we present an analysis of individuals' genome sequences from Early and Late Neolithic sites in Morocco and from Early Neolithic individuals from southern Iberia. We show that Early Neolithic Moroccans (∼5,000 BCE) are similar to Later Stone Age individuals from the same region and possess an endemic element retained in present-day Maghrebi populations, confirming a long-term genetic continuity in the region. This scenario is consistent with Early Neolithic traditions in North Africa deriving from Epipaleolithic communities that adopted certain agricultural techniques from neighboring populations. Among Eurasian ancient populations, Early Neolithic Moroccans are distantly related to Levantine Natufian hunter-gatherers (∼9,000 BCE) and Pre-Pottery Neolithic farmers (∼6,500 BCE). Late Neolithic (∼3,000 BCE) Moroccans, in contrast, share an Iberian component, supporting theories of trans-Gibraltar gene flow and indicating that Neolithization of North Africa involved both the movement of ideas and people. Lastly, the southern Iberian Early Neolithic samples share the same genetic composition as the Cardial Mediterranean Neolithic culture that reached Iberia ∼5,500 BCE. The cultural and genetic similarities between Iberian and North African Neolithic traditions further reinforce the model of an Iberian migration into the Maghreb.

El marco del proyecto I+D: “Aproximación a las primeras comunidades neolíticas del NE peninsular a través de sus prácticas funerarias” (2011-2015), y su continuidad para los próximos cuatro años al haber sido renovado, tiene por objetivo conocer cada día más y mejor las comunidades de agricultores y pastores que entre finales del V e inicios del IV milenio cal BC ocuparon y enterraron a sus muertos en el noreste de la Península Ibérica. El contexto de estudio es excepcional, puesto que aquellas comunidades inhumaron sistemáticamente a sus congéneres en tumbas habitualmente individuales y ocasionalmente junto a otro individuo. En esta presentación no sólo queremos mostrar los nuevos análisis y metodologías que estamos aplicando al estudio de los restos humanos, sino también el modelo de trabajo que hemos seguido. A este respecto, tres aspectos son fundamentales: 1) las dataciones absolutas son el eje que vertebra los posteriores análisis; 2) la colaboración con los distintos investigadores/as y laboratorios debe ser estrecha (no es cuestión de solicitar los resultados de un análisis a un laboratorio sino trabajar con las personas que manipulan las muestras y conocen los pros y contras de cada una de las técnicas empleadas) y 3) los estudios y análisis a realizar confluyen para responder a las hipótesis planteadas. A este respecto, en el proyecto hemos tenido la fortuna de poder colaborar con numerosos investigadores/as cuya especialidad versa alrededor de los restos funerarios y que firman la presente comunicación: análisis isotópicos, Adn, tafonomía funeraria, estudios de stress muscular y análisis de morfología dental.

Although the extensive use of lime plaster for architectural and other purposes is a characteristic hallmark of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB) in the southern Levant, no obvious kilns have been identified in archaeological contexts yet. In this work we present details of archaeological pit-kiln structures used to lime-plaster production found in the Kharaysin PPNB site (Jordan). Geochemical, mineralogical and petrological characterization of the associated raw materials and products, lime-plaster floor and mortars, from the same site allowed the tracing of the early production and use of lime.

Kharaysin is a Pre-Pottery Neolithic site located in the village of Quneya, in the Zarqa River valley, over 25 ha in size and dating from the 9th millennium cal BC. Two occupation levels have been documented. In excavation area IJ100, two oval semi-sunken houses with plaster floors were excavated; these dated from the beginning of the 9th millennium cal BC, the late phase of the PPNA. Over this architectural level, a straight stone wall and a burial correspond to the beginning of the Middle PPNB, at the end of the 9th millennium cal BC. Further south, down the slope of the site, in trenches CDEFG-55 and TUVX-60, a Middle PPNB occupation has also been documented, with rectangular buildings built on the surface, stone walls and plastered floors. In Area U60, paintings were discovered on the plastered floor of one building. Bipolar technology, Jericho and Amuq points and bent sickle blades are observed in the Middle PPNB occupation phase. The PPNA material culture, which is still poorly documented, seems to be characterized by unipolar knapping, blades with double pairs of notches and decorated grooved stones.

The analysis of a funerary area dated to the late 9th millennium BC (Early to Middle PPNB) sheds new light on the ritual practice of the first farming communities in Southern Syria. Deceased individuals were buried in oval graves, placed on their side in a flexed position and oriented along an E-W axis. Skulls and, in some cases, long bones were later extracted for certain funerary rituals in which the memory of the deceased was relevant and which were carried out in an abandoned house and its attached courtyard. However, veneration seems to be not the only aim of these practices and many other lines of interpretation (worship, revenge, divination, protection, propitiation, relief, witchcraft, etc.) should also be explored. Secondly, without invalidating the fact that communal and prearranged ritual ceremonies may have existed during the PPN, our study stresses the importance of the funerary practices as the result of numerous rituals repeated on the initiative of small groups of individuals to satisfy diverse and unsuspected needs.

The removal of crania from burials, their ritual use and their disposal, generally in cranial caches, are the most particular characteristics of the funerary ritual in the transition to the Neolithic in the Near East. Despite the importance of this ritual, detailed studies of cranial caches are rare. This funerary ritual has traditionally been interpreted as a form of ancestor-veneration. However, this study of the cranial caches found at the site of Tell Qarassa North, South Syria, dated in the second half of the ninth millennium BC, questions this interpretation. The 12 crania, found in two groups arranged in two circles on the floor of a room, belonged to male individuals, apart from one child and one preadolescent. In 10 of the 11 cases, the facial skeletons were deliberately mutilated. In the context of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B, when the symbolism of the human face played a vital role in ritual practice, this mutilation of the facial skeleton could be interpreted as an act of hostility. In the absence of indicators of social stratification or signs of violence that might indicate more coercive forms of society, the veneration of ancestors has been explained as a mechanism for social cohesion, which would have been necessary in a context of rapid growth in the population of settlements. However, data on the negative nature of some funerary rites, of punishment or indifference rather than veneration, should make us question an over-idealized view of the first Neolithic societies. [EN] The 2009 campaign has developed a broad topographic program of the complex of Qarassa 3, determining a stratigraphic sequence with two levels removed and a third probably in situ. A detailed topography was made of the 9 circular structures found in earlier campaigns, as well as a division of the interior surface in two halves and the intervention on the western half of structures 4 and 9, within which the so-called mortar holes have been analyzed. On the other hand, two areas of excavation have been opened in the deposit PPNB of Tell Qarassa Norte, where different architectonic elements at different levels, abundant carved material and burial spaces have been detected., [ES] La campaña 2009 ha desarrollado un amplio programa topográfico del conjunto de Qarassa 3, determinando una secuencia estratigráfica con dos niveles removidos y un tercero, probablemente in situ. De las 9 estructuras circulares halladas en campañas anteriores, se ha realizado una topografía detallada, una división de la superficie interior en dos mitades y la intervención en la mitad occidental en las estructuras 4 y 9, dentro de las cuales se han analizado los denominados agujeros-morteros. Por otro lado, en el yacimiento PPNB de Tell Qarassa Norte se han abierto dos zonas de excavación, donde se han detectado diferentes elementos arquitectónicos a distintos niveles, material tallado en abundancia y espacios de enterramientos.

[EN] This paper presents the results of the fieldwork carried out within the Project “Archaeology to the West of Homs” in 2009. The sites at Jeftelik and Tell Marj have been excavated and the work surveying the megalithic necropolis in the area has continued. Jeftelik is an early Natufian site, with a probable habitation structure associated with a large amount of knapped lithic objects. Its characteristics and chronology question conventional models about the origin and expansion of the Natufian. Tell Marj is a late Neolithic settlement, with houses with well-built rectangular basalt walls. Two occupation phases have been identified to date, in which the older phase exhibits several stages of re-building and superimposition of houses. The archaeological material found includes large numbers of projectile points and remains suggesting the incorporation of complex economic and social forms, with long-distance exchange networks and large-scale storage. The megalithic necropolises that have been studied cover large areas, several tens of square kilometres. Complex monuments have been identified, sometimes, associated with other types of structures apart from the funerary constructions themselves., [ES] En el artículo se presentan los resultados de los trabajos de campo desarrollados en el marco del proyecto “Arqueología al oeste de Homs” en 2009. Se han excavado los yacimientos de Jeftelik y Tell Marj y se ha continuado la prospección de las necrópolis megalíticas en la región. Jeftelik es un yacimiento natufiense antiguo en el que se ha localizado una probable estructura de habitación a la que está asociado una gran cantidad de material lítico tallado. Sus características y cronología ponen en cuestión los modelos convencionales sobre el origen y expansión del natufiense. Tell Marj es un poblado construido al final del neolítico en el que las casas cuentan con muros de basalto bien escuadrados. En el lugar se han reconocido dos fases de ocupación por el momento, la más antigua de las cuales muestra varias reconstrucciones y superposiciones de casas. Entre el material arqueológico destaca la extraordinaria abundancia de puntas de proyectil y la presencia de restos que sugieren la implantación de formas económicas y sociales complejas, con intercambios a larga distancia y almacenamiento a gran escala. Las necrópolis megalíticas reconocidas destacan por la gran extensión de las áreas ocupadas, de decenas de km., y por la existencia de monumentos complejos que a veces asocian otro tipo de estructuras a las construcciones funerarias propiamente dichas.

The Early PPNB (pre-pottery Neolithic B) period is crucial to the understanding of the emergence of farming in the Levant. The process of domestication of animals and plants characterises PPNB communities, and is associated with the appearance of complex buildings, the transition from rounded to squared houses and the appearance of technological (i.e. naviform debitage or long tanged projectile points) and symbolic innovations (i.e. the generalisation of human iconography) (Gopher 1996; Cauvin 1997; Coqueugniot 2000; Strodeur & Abbès 2002). In spite of its centrality to the understanding of domestication and permanent settlement, the Early PPNB remains poorly understood, especially in the central and southern Levant (Kuijt & Goring-Morris 2002; Edwards et al. 2005). A new research project has recently been set up at Tell Qarassa to fill this gap. Tell Qarassa is located to the south of the Leja region, 20km west of the city of Sweida, next to a dry lake surrounded by archaeological sites from different periods (Natufian, PPNB, PN, Bronze and Iron Ages). In 2007, the Syrian-French Archaeological Mission directed by Frank Braemer (CNRS) discovered extremely well preserved PPNB architectural remains on the northern tell. In 2009, the Spanish team directed by Juan José Ibáñez (IMF-CSIC) took over the excavation of the PPNB levels of Tell Qarassa North as part of a collaborative project with the Syrian-French Mission.

Desde 2004 un equipo hispano-sirio-libanés ha desarrollado un proyecto de investigación arqueológica al oeste de la ciudad de Homs, en la República árabe de Siria. Las instituciones implicadas son la Institución Milà y Fontanals (Departamento de Arqueología y Antropología) del CSIC y el Instituto Internacional de Investigaciones Prehistóricas de la Universidad de Cantabria, por la parte española, la Universidad Saint Joseph de Beirut, por la libanesa, y la Dirección General de Antigüedades y Museos, por la siria. El proyecto está dirigido por Juan José Ibáñez (CSIC), Maya Haïdar-Boustani (USJ) y Michel Al-Maqdissi (DGAM). El área de trabajo se extiende entre la ciudad de Homs, al este, el Krak de los Caballeros, al oeste, la frontera libanesa al sur y la ciudad de Shin al norte. Esto supone una extensión de 560 km2. Los objetivos del proyecto son: 1. Documentar el Patrimonio Arqueológico de la región, aplicando nuevas metodologías de prospección arqueológica. 2. Colaborar en la protección del Patrimonio Arqueológico y en la formación de arqueólogos sirios. 3. Estudiar el origen del Neolítico en la zona. 4. Reconocer las primeras rutas comerciales en la Edad del Bronce. 5. Documentar las extensas necrópolis megalíticas de la Edad del Bronce. 6. Reconstruir la evolución paleoclimática en la zona desde el Holoceno. Entre 2004 y 2007 se llevó a cabo la prospección arqueológica de la zona.
