Une lecture attentive de la figure biblique de Samuel révèle toute l’ambiguïté de l’exercice d’un pouvoir lorsqu’il se présente comme prophétique ou « salutaire ». Samuel illustre à merveille combien il est difficile aux détenteurs du pouvoir de lâcher prise.

In this paper I discuss the textual affinities of the three fragments of Samuel preserved in the Quedlinburg Itala (1 Sam 9:1–8; 15:10–18; 2 Sam 2:29–3:5), highlighting interesting variants for the study of Samuel-Kings. The Quedlinburg Itala shows a high number of interesting readings, especially in a non-kaige section. Especially when comparing Quedlinburg with other OL manuscripts, the findings potentially make an important contribution to the debate on the origins of the old Latin translation.

Cet article examine les livres de Samuel comme ensemble narratif. Il vise à mettre en évidence le dynamisme complexe qui sous-tend ce récit d’une ampleur exceptionnelle pour la Bible hébraïque. À cette fin, après une brève introduction méthodologique illustrée par des exemples tirés de 1-2 S, le fil du récit est examiné à la recherche des dynamismes narratifs (essentiellement le suspense, mais aussi la curiosité et la surprise) au moyen desquels se développe la stratégie narrative. L’étrange finale de 2 S (ch. 21–24) apparaît, à cette lumière, comme un contre-point mettant en lumière l’a priori théologique qui sous-tend cette stratégie., This article examines the books of Samuel as a narrative whole. It aims to highlight the complex dynamism underlying this narrative of exceptional magnitude for the Hebrew Bible. To this end, after a brief methodological introduction illustrated by examples taken from 1-2 S, the subtle use of narrative dynamisms (primarily suspense, but also curiosity and surprise) through which the strategy develops is examined throughout the narrative. The curious finale of 2 S (ch. 21–24) appears, in this light, as a counterpoint highlighting the theological a-priori underlying this strategy.

This study reviews characteristics of biblical personal names of the ‘United Monarchy’, and compares them with those of the ‘Divided Monarchy’. The comparison reveals that, while ‘Divided Monarchy’ names have similar characteristics in both Kings and Chronicles, the characteristics of ‘United Monarchy’ names differ, suggesting different sources for much of the ‘United Monarchy’ onomastica. Both sources, however, show the same remarkable onomastic evolution from the ‘United Monarchy’ to the ‘Divided Monarchy’, which may reflect the spread of Yahwism in the biblical narratives. This evolution is similar to that attested in the epigraphic evidence from a later period – from the 9th and 8th centuries to the 7th and early 6th centuries BCE.

Although motherhood is the female destiny par excellence in the biblical narrative, it is an experience only accessible through a male point of view. In order to reflect on the problems of representation of the maternal body in the Hebrew Bible, I propose an analysis of different maternal characters present in the books of Samuel and Kings. My reading aims, on the one hand, to identify the features that define the maternal in the biblical text and, on the other hand, to offer an approach that allows to point to the implications that the crisis context the texts reflect have on the picture of the actions and the destinies of these female characters., Dentro de la narración bíblica, la maternidad se presenta como el destino por excelencia de las mujeres y, sin embargo, es una experiencia que conocemos únicamente a través de un discurso eminentemente masculino. A partir de una lectura de distintos personajes maternos cuyas historias se encuentran dentro de los libros de Samuel y Reyes, pretendo reflexionar acerca de la problemática de la representación de los cuerpos maternos. Mi propuesta persigue un doble objetivo: por una parte, identificar las características de lo materno que encontramos en el texto bíblico y, por otra, ofrecer un acercamiento que permita señalar las implicaciones que el trasfondo de crisis ideológicas y políticas del texto tiene sobre la presentación de las acciones y el destino de estas mujeres.

Dans les bibles, le bref récit de 1 S 16,1-16 reçoit un titre évoquant l’onction de David. Pourtant, si l’épisode culmine effectivement sur cet acte essentiel pour la suite du récit, d’un point de vue narratif, son personnage principal est le prophète Samuel, présent sur scène depuis le début où Yhwh l’interpelle à propos du rejet de Saül (v. 1) jusqu’à la fin quand il rentre chez lui à Rama (v. 13b). C’est d’ailleurs son dernier acte officiel, le moment où il quitte la scène du récit. Il n'est pas étonnant dès lors que ce texte soit hautement significatif pour ce personnage autant, sinon plus, que pour David. C’est ce que je montre au moyen d’une analyse narrative de cette célèbre scène.

The following article is the result of an investigation into the use of spaces in the Masoretic manuscripts of the book of Samuel, led by the question: Is there a system in the use of spaces that can explain the above-mentioned phenomena? And if so, is there reason to assume that spaces could also indicate silence or missing text? The search for answers has been based on the appearance of these textual markers in Codex Leningradensis (L), Codex Aleppo (A), and Codex Cairensis (C), which are analysed by Langlamet (1984). To arrive at a certain measure of dating mss 4QSama, 4QSamb and 1QSama are used, which are excellently described by Herbert.

Les livres de Samuel et le début du premier livre des Rois racontent l'histoire des trois premiers rois d'Israël: Saül, David et Salomon. Ils offrent un magnifique récit auquel la vraisemblance intrinsèque confère toutes les apparences d'une narration historique. Cependant, une approche narratologique met en lumière une composante souvent négligée, à savoir de nombreux traits caractéristiques du récit de fiction; elle permet en outre d'entrer dans l'atelier du narrateur pour savourer la beauté du récit et la richesse de son sens théologique et anthropologique. Les textes bibliques étudiés dans cette perspective concernent les débuts du règne des premiers souverains d'Israël. L'étude suit donc leurs premiers pas dans l'exercice du pouvoir et décrypte la façon dont ces débuts annoncent les traits majeurs des personnages; elle met en lumière le rôle déterminant que jouent dans ces épisodes des prophètes et des femmes.

The purpose of this article is to present a theoretical review the developed state the of classical archivistics until the first three decades of the XX century, with the purpose of exposing the theories and references of the epistemological subjection of this science, that is, describe the budgets the technical scientific discourse in which orbits this scientific discipline. In order to develop some preliminary ideas on this discernment will raise first an overview of the first three manuals published and their authors within the European context. Then, we refer to the characterization of archival conceived to the period briefly describing the object study, the principles and fundamental concepts and processes treatment of document archival., La finalidad de este artículo es presentar una revisión teórica del estado desarrollado de la archivística clásica hasta las tres primeras décadas del siglo XX, con el propósito de exponer las teorías y las referencias de la sujeción epistemológica de esta ciencia, es decir, describir los presupuestos del discurso científico técnico en la que orbita esta disciplina científica. L'article montre comment la crainte de se voir remplacé par le roi pousse le prophète à tenter de contrôler le jeune monarque et à le mettre dans une situation qui prépare la tragédie qui sera la sienne.

To begin with, this article looks at the structure of surprise by exploring different chararcters within some biblical stories (Jacob in Gen 29; David's servants in 2 Sam 12; Eglon's courtiers in Judg 3). From this exploration this article moves briefly at two partly different theories about surprise (M. Sternberg, R. Baroni), and illustrates how this narrative technique is used by biblical narrators to surprise the reader (Esau's attitude towards Jacob in Gen 33, Yael's murder in Judg 4,21, Jonathan's liberation by the people in 1 Sam 14, the amazing drama of Judg 19, Hanna's reaction in 1 Sam 1,9, Haman's exaltation in Esth 3, etc.). In the second part of the article, the careful analysis of surprise in 1 Sam 9,1-18 is analyzed. In particular, it is demonstrated how the narrator conceals important information (the implication of God in the choice of Saul) before surprising the reader in the end. Through the revelation of this decisive element, the reader is invited to re-read the preceding scenes in order to discover the traces of God's hand.

Like Professor Calhoun, I hold little hope for an end to this distinctive national battle in what Australian constitutional law scholars Tony Blackshield and George Williams, echoing Justice Scalia’s opinion in Romer v. Evans, aptly call our “‘culture war’ over issues of sexuality.” Other battles in this war, such as the current litigation in the federal courts over the constitutionality of bans on same-sex marriage or the controversy of the Obama Administration’s departure from its “science standard” in refusing the National Institutes of Health’s recommendations that the “morning after pill” be made available over-the-counter to minors, presently dot the jurisdiction, just as those named Antietam, Bull Run, and Gettysburg marked the nation’s territory in their era.

The relation between reality and language, the instability of language as a signification system, the representation crisis, and the borders of interpretation are the controversial issues that have engaged not only philosophers, but also many authors, translators, and literary critics. Some philosophers like Derrida accuse Western thinking of being obsessed with binary oppositions. In Derrida's view, Western tradition resorts to external references as God, truth, origin, center and reason to stabilize the signification system. Since these concepts lack an internal sense and there is no transcendental signified that can fix these signifiers, language turns to an instable system by means of which no fixed meaning can be created. Many authors like Beckett, Stoppard, and Caryl Churchill also noticed this impossibility of language. While Derrida's deconstructive approach to this crisis has an epistemological nature, these playwrights present an aesthetic solution by turning the deconstructive potential of language against itself in text and performance. This dissertation aims at exploring their performing methods and dramatic texts to demonstrate how their delogocentric strategies work. By analyzing their plays, I will examine if their use of signifiers that have no references in reality, intentional misconceptions, disintegrated subjectivities, decentered narratives, and experimental performances can help them undermine the prevailing logocentrism of Western thought. The examination of the change in aesthetic strategies from Beckett, who belongs to earlier stages of post modernism, to Caryl Churchill, who should perform in a globalized world with increasing dominance of speed and information, is another aim of this research. In my view,Beckett's obsession with unspeakable, absurdity, and disintegration of subjectivity develops to Stoppard's language games, metadrama, and anti-representation and culminates in Churchill's anti-narrative texts and pluralistic performances., Der Zusammenhang der Realität mit der Sprache, die Unstabilität der Sprache als ein Signifikationssystem, die Repräsentationkrise, und die Grenze der Interpretation sind die Streitpunkte, die nicht nur die zeitgenössischen Philosophen sondern auch viele Autoren beschäftigt haben. Manche Philosophen wie Derrida unterstellen, dass das westliche Denken das Wort als Sinträger betrachtet. Aus dieser Problematik kommt eine Repräsentationkrise, die nicht nur die Philosophie sondern auch die Literatur betrifft. Ob und wie man gegen die Grenze der Sprache anrennen kann, ist nicht nur eine philosophische, sondern auch eine ästhetische Frage. Während die Antwort der Philosophen wie Derrida eine dekonstruktive Annäherung zur logozentrischen Interpretationen ist, schlägt die Literatur eine ästhetische Lösung vor: die Darstellung der Sprachkrise mittels der Sprache. Kann uns das experimentelle Kunstwerk der Autoren wie Samuel Beckett, Tom Stoppard und Caryl Churchill von der Illusion der Wirklichkeit befreien? Ist es möglich eine anti-erzählenden Erzählung zu schaffen, die die Dominanz des beherrschenden Diskurses abschaffen kann? Diese Fragen zu erforschen visiert diese Dissertation an. Die ersten Versuche dieser Autoren gegen pure Repräsentation richten sich an neue Phantasiequellen außerhalb der Realität. Jag har i denna studie av Samuel Becketts (1906-1989) två dramer I väntan på Godot (En Attendant Godot) (1952) och Slutspel (Fin de Partie) (1957) studerat dialogen och monologen i de båda dramerna och diskuterat kring vilka slutsatser man därav kan dra om språk och berättande. Fokus har legat på hur dialogen tar sig ut, vilka faktorer den är under stor påverkan av och dess relation till monologens fundamentala roll i Becketts dramer. Analysen har jag delat upp i två delar vilka för sig behandlar var sitt drama i kronologisk ordning. Först I Väntan på Godot och därefter Slutspel. De båda delarna är sedan i sin tur uppdelade i två delar varav den första diskuterar dialogen och den andra monologen. Första delen av analysen av I väntan på Godot har kallats ”Missförstånd och minne” och där har jag reflekterat kring, som titeln avslöjar, missförståndets roll – hur det tar sig ut och varför – samt dialogens påverkan av karaktärernas bristande minne. I delen som följer har jag fokuserat på berättandet i dramat med utgångspunkt i bland annat Pozzos spel och Luckys förbryllande tal. I första delen av analysen av Slutspel, ”Spelet”, har jag studerat dialogen i relation till det spel vilket karaktärerna i dramat utsätter varandra för. Vidare tar jag upp vanan under samma rubrik och hur den påverkat dialogen. I sista delen, ”Hamms berättande”, har jag undersökt Hamms berättelse, vilket även kommer nämnas under rubriken innan, och monologens roll även i detta drama. För att kunna förankra analysen i de båda dramernas handling, vilka i sig stått fokus för en mängd forskning, har jag valt att använda mig av verk vilka presenterar generella och översiktliga tolkningar av Becketts författarskap, t.ex. Charles R. Lyons Samuel Beckett (1983), Richard N. Coes Beckett (1968) samt portalverket till den absurda teatern, Martin Esslins The Theatre of the Absurd (1961). We present a competitive storage model of commodity prices featuring frictions that introduce an element of irreversibility into storage decisions. This leads to situations in which speculators do not trade in the spot market even though total storage is positive. As a result the market value of the stored commodity which is determined in the (financial) market for ownership of firms operating storage facilities can diverge from the spot price. Such price separation leads to the existence of an endogenous convenience yield which we show equals the expected excess return on a real option embedded in each unit of the stored commodity. The outputs of our model are consistent with the stylized facts regarding commodity price distributions including serial correlation and GARCH characteristics. Samuelson's hypothesis - that forward prices are less volatile than spot prices - does not hold in general.

In The Mad Man (1994), which is concerned, among many other things, with the sexual encounters of a young black male philosophy PhD candidate with black, white, and Latino homeless men, Samuel Delany explores the ambiguous relation between the erotics of urban life and postmodern capitalism. To an important extent, the novel suggests, certain modes of urban queer eroticism might be seen as utopian alternatives to dominant modes of late capitalist sociality. This tendency of the novel is, however, offset by its countervailing (though less emphatic) attention to the antisocial, anti-utopian elements within both sexual desire and the contemporary urban environment — elements that the novel collects together under the sign of apocalypse. Taken together, the novel’s deployment of utopian and apocalyptic elements provides a powerfully dialectical account of the intertwined operations of commodity culture and eroticism within the postmodern metropolitan context.

In common with most of his work, Samuel Delanys science fiction novelTrouble on Triton (1976) is subscribed with a tag providing the geographical and temporal co-ordinates of its composition - in this case, 'London, Nov. '73-July '74'.

Certains textes narratifs des livres de Samuel donnent à penser à propos du pouvoir et des conditions de son exercice légitime. On s'attarde ici à des passages qui abordent des questions cruciales: l’articulation entre pouvoir humain et pouvoir divin (1 Sam 8-12) et la question de la violence inhérente au pouvoir (pages de l'histoire de David).

Diese Arbeit sucht Antworten auf zwei Fragen: Welche Prozesse steuern die Interaktion zwischen Autor und seinen Lesern, und wie haben sich diese Prozesse im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts möglicherweise verändert? Wir wollen zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen beispielhaft zwei Aspekte der Interaktion zwischen Autor und Leser betrachten, die wir, ausgehend von der vorliegenden Sekundärliteratur, für besonders vielschichtig und relevant halten: Intertextualität und Performativität. Diese Aspekte sollen dann an drei literarischen Beispielen: Henry Jamesens The Turn of the Screw (1898), Samuel Becketts Film (1963) und John Banvilles The Untouchable (1997) durchgearbeitet werden. Sie sollen drei Stationen der literarischen Entwicklung des 20. Jahrhunderts repräsentieren: den Beginn der Moderne, den Beginn der Postmoderne und die heutige Zeit. Im Vergleich der Texte wollen wir die Entwicklung der Beziehung zwischen Autor und Leser über diesen Zeitabschnitt hinweg offen legen. Film bildet sozusagen ein Scharnier zwischen Henry Jamesens und John Banvilles Texten. Im Sinne von Linda Hutcheons (2002 (1989)) Überlegungen zur Charakteristik postmoderner Texte und John Kenny (2006:57), der eine Verwandtschaft von John Banvilles Texten zu denen von Henry James nachweist, kann man The Turn of the Screw durchaus auch als postmodernen, mit The Untouchable sehr verwandten Text lesen.

Les commentateurs n’ont guère exploré le lien qui unit le récit de l’offrande de Samuel en 1 S 1/1–2/21 et la célèbre page de Gn 22/1-19 où Abraham offre son fils sur la montagne. Après avoir proposé une clé de lecture nouvelle pour le récit de l’Aqéda, l'article tente de montrer que de tels liens existent à divers niveaux. Autour de la situation des acteurs, des motifs narratifs, mais aussi des enjeux anthropologiques et théologiques, un jeu d’échos se développe entre les deux récits et conduit à s’interroger sur la signification d’un tel rapprochement

Early nineteenth-century Eurocentric perceptions of natural history led to the flora and fauna of Australia being thought of as deficient and inferior compared with those of other lands. By the 1820s, Australia had become known as “the land of contrarieties”. This, and Eurocentric attitudes to nature in general, influenced the expectations and perceptions of immigrants throughout the century. Yet at the same time there was developing an aesthetic appreciation of the natural history of Australia. This thesis examines the tension between these two perceptions in the popular natural history writing of the nineteenth century, mainly through the writing of five authors – George Bennett (1804-1893), Louisa Anne Meredith (1812-1895), Samuel Hannaford (1937-1874), Horace Wheelwright (1815-1865) and Donald Macdonald (1859?-1932). George Bennett was a scientist, who saw Australian plants and animals more as scientific specimens than objects of beauty. Louisa Meredith perceived them in the familiar language of English romantic poetry. Samuel Hannaford used another language, that of popular British natural history writers of the mid-nineteenth century. To Horace Wheelwright, Australian animals were equally valuable to the sportsman’s gun as to the naturalist’s pen. Donald Macdonald was the only one of these major writers to have been born in Australia. Although proud of his British heritage, he rejoiced in the beauty of his native land. His writing demonstrates his joy, and his novel attitude to Australian natural history continued and developed in the present century.

Ce long article tente de mettre en évidence la richesse du personnage littéraire de Samuel mais aussi sa complexité. L’idée de médiation par la parole est peut-être la moins mauvaise pour synthétiser les traits qui composent le personnage. Dans le récit, en effet, Samuel apparaît comme le lieu d’échange privilégié entre le Seigneur et Israël. Aussi, les modifications que connaît son personnage — prêtre, prophète, leader, négociateur, chargé de mission et faiseur de roi, médiateur d’alliance — sont tributaires de l’évolution de la relation qu’il médiatise. Ainsi, Samuel est-il en quelque sorte l’homme de l’alliance, et à ce titre, un nouveau Moïse.

The study elucidates the relation of Tom Stoppard's play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead to Hamlet on the one hand and to the Theatre of the Absurd on the other. The two plays chosen to represent the Theatre of the Absurd are Samuel Beckett1 s Waiting for Godot and Harold Pinter* s The Caretaker. Since Stoppard is admired as a master craftsman of language, the emphasis is on his use of language. The extent to which the use of the cliché characterizes the three absurd plays is examined. It is found that the language area covered by the term cliche is not clearly defined and that the term is not uniformly applied. The inquiry centres on finding features, such as repetition, music-hall passages and "ready-made" language, that could explain why the dialogue in the three plays might appear cliche-ridden and on comparing the three plays in respect of these features. The study further draws parallels between Stoppard's play and Waiting for Godot in the use of various techniques, such as misunderstandings, anticlimax and afterthought. It is found that there is often a conscious adoption by Stoppard of Beckett's techniques. To clarify the relation of Stoppard's play to Hamlet various aspects of the two plays are studied. These aspects include changes introduced into stereotyped expressions, punning, the use of parody and the handling of two specific motives, madness and death. Parallels are found in spite of the fact that several centuries separate the two plays, not least in respect to style, technique and language., digitalisering@umu

El siguiente estudio reseña las incidencias de la conquista israelita en la que se revela el carácter indomable de los descendientes de Esaú y las causas profundas del odio a muerte que animó siempre las hostilidades entre Edom e Israel. Se aborda la conquista israelita, la lucha por la independencia y las hostilidades contra los judíos.

El estudio se centra en un pasaje oscuro y poco estudiado del primer capítulo del libro de Samuel (v.15). En este pasaje, el rey amalecita Agag, capturado por Saúl a causa de los sanguinarios ataques a los habitantes del sur de Judea. A raíz de este acontecimiento se desarrollan diferentes acciones hasta que Agag se ve delante de la muerte. Este momento es analizado en el artículo desde el plano lingüístico, sintáctico y exegético.
