Workplace Dignity has long been the subject of scholarly enquiry, although until recently the body of research has been dominated by ethnographic work. Recently, Thomas and Lucas (2019) developed the first quantitative, direct measure of perceptions of workplace dignity: the Workplace Dignity Scale (WDS). Given the importance of understanding dignity in the workplace, this study sought to replicate the initial scale validation study conducted by Thomas and Lucas, so as to confirm the reliability and validity of the scale prior to its future applied and scholarly use. Moreover, the current study contributes to the ongoing methodological reform of psychology towards a transparent and rigorous science by preregistering the method and analysis script prior to collecting data. A large sample of workers (N = 853) from the United States were recruited through Prolific Academic and completed an online questionnaire that included the WDS, as well as theoretically related scales (e.g., workplace incivility). Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the model specified by Thomas and Lucas had reasonable global fit and estimates of reliability (ωt) indicated that the two main factors of the scale, Dignity and Indignity, had high internal consistency. Nomological analyses revealed that the Dignity factor of the WDS was significantly correlated in the expected directions with theoretically related variables. Furthermore, the Dignity and Indignity factors of the WDS were found to highly correlate with one another, posing questions as to whether the two factors are qualitatively different phenomena as was argued by Thomas and Lucas. It is concluded that the WDS is a promising tool for measuring workplace dignity although refinement of the proposed measurement model may be necessary.

Methods: In Phase 1, OLs were identified using a cross-sectional survey among Canadian chiropractic stakeholders. A 10-member committee ranked nominees. Top-ranked nominees were invited to a training workshop. In Phase 2, a national e-survey was administered to 7200 Canadian chiropractors to identify additional OLs and BPCs. Recommended names were screened by OLs and final selection made by consensus. Webinars were utilized to train BPCs to engage peers in best practices, and facilitate guideline dissemination. Results: In Phase 1, 21 OLs were selected from 80 nominees. Sixteen attended a training workshop. In Phase 2, 486 chiropractors recommended 1126 potential BPCs, of which 133 were invited to participate and 112 accepted. Conclusions: OLs and BPCs were identified across Canada to enhance the uptake of research among chiropractors. Current clinical and epidemiological research provides support for a continuum of bipolar psychopathology: a bipolar spectrum that ranges from subclinical manifestations to full-blown bipolar disorders. The present research examined the validity of the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS) as a measure of bipolar spectrum psychopathology in a nonclinically identified sample of young adults. In the first study, participants were interviewed and completed questionnaires regarding psychopathology, personality, and functioning. The HPS was positively associated with DSM-IV-TR bipolar disorders, bipolar spectrum disorders, the presence of hypomania or hyperthymia, depressive symptoms, poor psychosocial functioning, cyclothymia, irritability, and symptoms of borderline personality disorder. The second study employed experience sampling methodology to examine the expression of bipolar spectrum psychopathology in daily life. Consistent with the hypotheses, the HPS was associated with negative affect, thought disturbance, risky behavior, and measures of grandiosity. Individuals who scored highly on the HPS were more reactive in negative affect in response to stress and how positively they viewed their situation, and experienced difficulty concentrating regardless of how they viewed their situation. The HPS accounted for variance in bipolar spectrum psychopathology over and above the normal personality dimensions of extraversion and openness to experience. Furthermore, the findings for the HPS remained independent of DSM-IV-TR bipolar disorders--consistent with the hypothesis that the spectrum of bipolar psychopathology extends beyond traditional clinical disorders to include subclinical manifestations. Together, these studies provide further validation of the HPS as a measure of bipolar spectrum psychopathology.

Historically psychological scales have used a mix of positively keyed and negatively keyed items (balanced scales) to control for the effects of response sets. While it has been established that the use of balanced scales does effectively control for response sets such as acquiescence, issues relating to the psychometric properties of these scales emerge. The following review investigated issues surrounding the reliability, validity and factor structure of balanced scales by considering whether these issues were caused by positively and negatively keyed items measuring different aspects of a construct or whether they emerged simply due to measurement error. Both these positions are supported by research with various balanced scales, though it is necessary for future research to consider the effect that negative item framing, rather than negative item keying, has on the psychometric properties of balanced scales. The Life Orientation Test (LOT) and Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R) were investigated to see how item framing influenced both scales factor structure. Two modified versions of both scales were created, one with consistent positive framing and the other with consistent negative framing. In both scales the original meaning (keying) of items was maintained so that each version had a balance of positively and negatively keyed items. Confirmatory factor analysis results indicated that a two-factor model was a significantly better fit to the data from the positively and negatively framed LOT and positively framed LOT-R. It was suggested that participants do not respond to item framing but instead item-keying direction when completing both scales. Furthermore participants responded differently to negatively framed items, perhaps due to the increased semantic complexity.

Summary: Nonloyal consumer purchasing behavior has long been a topic of interest to marketers. A good deal of evidence unearthed suggests that many consumers do not buy the same brand time after time and may rarely remain brand loyal over the long-term. Progress in understanding nonloyal purchasing behavior is limited due, in part, to the lack of attention paid to defining the construct and its domain. The Determinants of Consumer Varied Purchasing Behavior (DCVPB) Scale developed in the study permits marketing managers and researchers to identify the facets of nonloyal purchasing behavior, termed Consumer Varied Purchasing Behavior, underlying consumer purchasing behavior for a brand or product category in question. Moreover, an Extended Taxonomy of Consumer Varied Purchasing Behavior (CVPB) is offered. It is needed to revamp and reorganize better the existing terms and add new, relevant dimensions to the structure. All forms of explicable nonloyal purchasing behavior are viewed as explicable brand switching. It is classified into four subcategories termed: (1) past purchase dissatisfaction; (2) promotion effect; (3) hybrid; and (4) CVPB. As postulated here, CVPB is defined as any explicable consumer choice that differs from its predecessor for reasons other than dissatisfaction with the past brand and/or pure promotion effect. Instead, CVPB is motivated by one of thirteen facets or determinants of consumer varied purchasing behavior (DCVPB). CVPB is marked by either exploratory behavior (i.e., absolute or relative novelty seeking) or variety seeking among known brands alternation among known brands, (i.e., alteration among known brands, switching among known brands to enjoy a simple change of pace). The study revealed thirteen facets of CVPB, which include: (1) affiliation, (2) change in constraints, (3) change in feasible set, (4) change in other environmental factors, (5) change in tastes, (6) decision uncertainty, and (7) desire for the unfamiliar. Reports of the sexual assault of children have increased dramatically. The lack of tests to identify characteristics of the perpetrators other than the assaultive behavior itself has impeded both the research of child molesters and the identification of molesters who plead innocence. A principal problem in developing appropriate measures is the defensiveness of child molesters; perpetrators do not reveal their true attitudes and feelings about adult-child sex in order to appear socially desirable and to avoid punishment. This thesis revised the Abel and Becker Cognitive Distortion (ABC) scale (Abel, Gore, Holland, Camp, Becker and Rathner, 1989) in order to reduce defensive responding. The methods employed to reduce response bias were: (a) the addition of "justifications", conditions, or provisos to items which represent cognitive distortions about adult-child sex to make them seem more socially desirable to perpetrators; (b) modifying the social desirability of the items; (c) varying the keying of the items; and, (d) mixing the critical items amongst items from other tests which measure attitudes toward women but which do not describe cognitions about adult-child sex. The best known unidimensional deterministic scaling method is Guttman scaling. The scope of inquiry is limited to scaling with four dichotomous scale items. The theory of multidimensional scaling is explained and the operation of a multidimensional scaling program (KYST) is examined under different input data forms and program control constraints. Using data collected from economists on the faculty of the Naval Postgraduate School, individual and aggregate configurations of their perceptions of economic subjects are obtained through multidimensional scaling of pairwise comparison data and are interpreted.
