1. Elite avenues: Flyovers, freeways and the politics of urban mobility

Abstract

Development and planning elites across many of the burgeoning megacities of the Global South still work powerfully to fetishise elevated highways or flyovers as part of their efforts at ‘worlding’ their cities. In such a context, and given the neglect of such processes in recent urban and mobilities literatures, this paper presents an international and interdisciplinary analysis of the urban and vertical politics of raised flyovers, freeways and expressways. It argues that such highways need to be seen as important elements within broader processes of three-dimensional social segregation and secession within and between cities which privilege the mobilities of the privileged. The paper falls into six sections. Following the introduction, the complex genealogies of flyover urban design are discussed. Discussion then moves to the vertical politics of flyovers in the West Bank and post-Apartheid South Africa; the elite imaginings surrounding flyover construction in Mumbai; the political struggles surrounding the ribbons of space beneath flyover systems; and the efforts to bury or reappropriate the landscapes of raised flyovers.

Abstract

Flow history of polymer melts in processing greatly influences the crystallinity and hence the solid properties of the final material. A wide range of polymer processes involve extensional flows e.g. fiber spinning, blow moulding etc. However, due to instrumental difficulties, experimental studies on polymer crystallization in controlled uniaxial extension are quite rare compared to studies of crystallization in shear. Inherently uniaxial extensional flows are strong and simple relative to shear flows, in the sense that chain stretch is easily obtained and that the molecules experience no tumbling, hence much can be learned from studying polymers in extension. Recent advances in filament stretching rheometry now enable the performance of controlled uniaxial stretching of polymeric liquids even to high Hencky strains [1]. In addition the instrument allows for quenching at specific strains such that crystallization from a stretched state can take place. In this work we explore this feature in the attempt to link the nonlinear extensional rheology to the final morphology. We investigate polyethylenes (PE) of various chain architectures and observe that, even for complex architectures like long chain branched PE, the final morphology is determined by the stress at quench. This can be explained by realizing that nonlinearity in stress arises from changes in molecular configuration such as chain stretch. Hence the nonlinear stress response reflects the molecular configuration during stretching determining the final morphology [2].

8. Informal Urban Sanitation: Everyday Life, Poverty, and Comparison

Abstract

The global sanitation crisis is rapidly urbanizing, but how is sanitation produced and sustained in informal settlements? Although there are data available on aggregate statistics, relatively little is known about how sanitation is created, maintained, threatened, and contested within informal settlements. Drawing on an ethnography of two very different informal settlements in Mumbai, this study identifies key ways in which informal sanitation is produced, rendered vulnerable, and politicized. In particular, four informal urban sanitation processes are examined: patronage, self-managed processes, solidarity and exclusion, and open defecation. The article also considers the implications for a research agenda around informal urban sanitation, emphasizing in particular the potential of a comparative approach, and examines the possibilities for better sanitation conditions in Mumbai and beyond.

9. The Politics of Open Defecation: Informality, Body, and Infrastructure in Mumbai

Abstract

This paper examines the politics of open defecation by focusing on everyday intersections of the body and infrastructure in the metabolic city, which produces profoundly unequal opportunities for fulfilling bodily needs. Specifically, it examines how open defecation emerges in Mumbai's informal settlements through everyday embodied experiences, practices and perceptions forged in relation to the materialities of informality and infrastructure. It does so by tracing the micropolitics of provision, access, territoriality and control of sanitation infrastructures; everyday routines and rhythms, both of people and infrastructures; and experiences of disgust and perceptions of dignity. It also examines open defecation as embodied spatial and temporal improvisations in order to investigate the socially differentiated efforts and risks that it entails. More broadly, the paper seeks to deepen understandings of the relationship between the body, infrastructure and the sanitary/unsanitary city.

10. Water Wars in Mumbai

Abstract

This essay excavates the complex politics of water in contemporary Mumbai. In the context of a burgeoning water crisis in the city, it explores in detail how the city’s social and political elites demonize the efforts of inhabitants of Mumbai’s slums to hydrate their communities. Such demonization is paralleled by legal crackdowns and the deliberate destruction of improvised water infrastructure. The essay uses the Mumbai case study to reveal the costs of marginalizing the majority urban poor in global megacities: in public health, death rates, and communicable and waterborne diseases; in the burden of waiting for and carrying water (especially for women and children); in the burden of incurring high water expenses; in water extortion against the poor by predatory rackets; and in the problems of systematic dehydration.

Abstract

Purpose: To improve quality of newborn screening by tandem mass spectrometry with a novel approach made possible by the collaboration of 154 laboratories in 49 countries. Methods: A database of 767,464 results from 12,721 cases affected with 60 conditions was used to build multivariate pattern recognition software that generates tools integrating multiple clinically significant results into a single score. This score is determined by the overlap between normal and disease ranges, penetration within the disease range, differences between conditions, and weighted correction factors. Results: Ninety tools target either a single condition or the differential diagnosis between multiple conditions. Scores are expressed as the percentile rank among all cases with the same condition and are compared to interpretation guidelines. Retrospective evaluation of past cases suggests that these tools could have avoided at least half of 279 false-positive outcomes caused by carrier status for fatty-acid oxidation disorders and could have prevented 88% of known false-negative events. Conclusion: Application of this computational approach to raw data is independent from single analyte cutoff values. In Minnesota, the tools have been a major contributing factor to the sustained achievement of a false-positive rate below 0.1% and a positive predictive value above 60%. © 2012 American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics.

Abstract

PURPOSE:: To achieve clinical validation of cutoff values for newborn screening by tandem mass spectrometry through a worldwide collaborative effort. METHODS:: Cumulative percentiles of amino acids and acylcarnitines in dried blood spots of approximately 25-30 million normal newborns and 10,742 deidentified true positive cases are compared to assign clinical significance, which is achieved when the median of a disorder range is, and usually markedly outside, either the 99th or the 1st percentile of the normal population. The cutoff target ranges of analytes and ratios are then defined as the interval between selected percentiles of the two populations. When overlaps occur, adjustments are made to maximize sensitivity and specificity taking all available factors into consideration. RESULTS:: As of December 1, 2010, 130 sites in 45 countries have uploaded a total of 25,114 percentile data points, 565,232 analyte results of true positive cases with 64 conditions, and 5,341 cutoff values. The average rate of submission of true positive cases between December 1, 2008, and December 1, 2010, was 5.1 cases/day. This cumulative evidence generated 91 high and 23 low cutoff target ranges. The overall proportion of cutoff values within the respective target range was 42% (2,269/5,341). CONCLUSION:: An unprecedented level of cooperation and collaboration has allowed the objective definition of cutoff target ranges for 114 markers to be applied to newborn screening of rare metabolic disorders. © 2011 Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

17. A systematic investigation of the parameters affecting the accuracy of the vortex-lattice method

Abstract

A procedure is developed to examine the parameters affecting the accuracy of the vortex-lattice method when applied to a nonlinear lifting surface problem with leading edge separation. Among the factors investigated are the extensions of the bound vortex segments off the sharp edges of the wing, modifications of the Biot-Savart law to damp out near singularities, the length of the free vortex segments, the placement of the control points on the surface of the wing, and methods of applying the no-penetration boundary condition and spatial conservation of circulation. Two methods of force and pressure calculations are considered and an interpolation procedure is introduced to represent the pressure distribution as a continuous function over the surface of the wing. Delta, arrowhead, and cropped delta wings are presented as numerical examples. Parametric studies are made for the delta wing of aspect ratio one. It is found that the parameter which has the greatest influence on the solution is the extension of the bound vortex segments adjoining the leading edge off the leading edge.

19. Beneficiation of terrestrial resources for the production of lunar simulant separates.

Abstract

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, USA, has been asked to prepare for lunar habitation beginning in 2024. Prior to this information is required on how lunar soil can be used to support plant life and construct buildings and how it affects human health and safety as well as equipment, tools, machinery and clothes. There is not enough material available to perform large-scale studies to address these issues, so there is a need to synthesise it. A study was carried out into the use of mineral processing technologies to make ‘simulant’ from two Earth resources, the Road norite outcrop near the Stillwater underground mine in Montana and the process tailings from the Nye concentrator. These resources contain three of the four silicate minerals that lunar soil contains in both high and pure amounts. Flowsheets were developed to show how these resources could be processed and made into ‘separates’ of high-calcium plagioclase and orthopyroxene/clinopyroxene with the aim of combining them to make simulant. The Road norite material was subjected to dry comminution and beneficiated using a rare earth magnetic belt separator. The resulting non-magnetic materials were then wet ground and processed by flotation to remove naturally hydrophobic, hydrated minerals such as talc. A second stage of flotation was conducted to remove any remaining talc but required the use of a collector. Removing the talc in two stages minimised reagent consumption. The product was a plagioclase concentrate. The paramagnetic materials were subjected to wet grinding and wet high-intensity magnetic separation to produce a pyroxene concentrate. The concentrator material was first separated with a wet drum separator to remove the strong magnetic fractions. Please click on the hyperlink in Additional Links field., PURPOSE: To achieve clinical validation of cutoff values for newborn screening by tandem mass spectrometry through a worldwide collaborative effort. METHODS: Cumulative percentiles of amino acids and acylcarnitines in dried blood spots of approximately 25–30 million normal newborns and 10,742 deidentified true positive cases are compared to assign clinical significance, which is achieved when the median of a disorder range is, and usually markedly outside, either the 99th or the 1st percentile of the normal population. The cutoff target ranges of analytes and ratios are then defined as the interval between selected percentiles of the two populations. When overlaps occur, adjustments are made to maximize sensitivity and specificity taking all available factors into consideration. RESULTS: As of December 1, 2010, 130 sites in 45 countries have uploaded a total of 25,114 percentile data points, 565,232 analyte results of true positive cases with 64 conditions, and 5,341 cutoff values. The average rate of submission of true positive cases between December 1, 2008, and December 1, 2010, was 5.1 cases/day. This cumulative evidence generated 91 high and 23 low cutoff target ranges. The overall proportion of cutoff values within the respective target range was 42% (2,269/5,341). CONCLUSION: An unprecedented level of cooperation and collaboration has allowed the objective definition of cutoff target ranges for 114 markers to be applied to newborn screening of rare metabolic disorders.
