The integration of circular economy (CE) principles within organizational strategies has become imperative for companies committed to sustainability and resource efficiency. This study explores the adoption of CE principles and the role of the balanced scorecard (BSC) as a facilitative tool. By contextualizing the significance of CE adoption, this paper reviews existing BSC models that incorporate sustainability aspects and evaluates software solutions for BSC implementation. Subsequently, a novel methodological framework was proposed. As a novelty, the strategic analysis included the use of a SWOT analysis. Once the situation was identified, BS 8001:2017 was used to define strategic objectives oriented towards the principles of a CE. Moreover, the proposed objectives were prioritized using the analytic network process tool. After completing the organizational and strategic analyses, the UNE 66175:2003 norm was incorporated to decide on the most appropriate indicators for each objective. Finally, to illustrate the proposed framework, a theoretical detailed case study was developed within the context of an industry specializing in the design and manufacturing of plastic packaging. The developed BSC was implemented using the selected software. This study demonstrated the convenience of establishing a methodology to guide decision making in the development and monitoring of the BSC.

In this work we explain the relevance of the Differential Galois Theory in the semiclassical (or WKB) quantification of some two degree of freedom potentials. The key point is that the semiclassical path integral quantification around a particular solution depends on the variational equation around that solution: a very well-known object in dynamical systems and variational calculus. Then, as the variational equation is a linear ordinary differential system, it is possible to apply the Differential Galois Theory to study its solvability in closed form. We obtain closed form solutions for the semiclassical quantum fluctuations around constant velocity solutions for some systems like the classical Hermite/Verhulst, Bessel, Legendre, and Lamé potentials. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are still relatively new in the High Performance Computing (HPC) field. Hence, they still lack a mature ecosystem that allows non-FPGA experts to scale an application with many devices operating in parallel. In this paper, we add support for message passing inspired by the Message Passing Interface (MPI) to the Marenostrum Exascale Emulation Platform (MEEP) cluster, a state-of-the-art FPGA cluster. We use the OmpSs@FPGA programming model, which allows C/C++ code to run on the FPGA and call functions that behave like the well-known MPI\_Send/Recv. For that, we implement the message passing runtime over the MEEP 100Gb Ethernet network. This network includes a switch connected to the QSFP port of the FPGA cards. The switch enables all-to-all connectivity without adding routers in the FPGA fabric. We also introduce a method to manage FPGAs that are PCIe-hosted by remote CPU nodes. I.e. from any CPU node we can load the bitstream, configure it, and transfer data to FPGAs that are attached to a different node. Finally, we evaluate the bandwidth of FPGA-FPGA, and CPU-FPGA local and remote communication, as well as the performance of benchmarks scaling from 1 to 64 FPGAs using the infrastructure presented in this paper. The benchmarks are N-body, Heat with Gauss-Seidel solver and Cholesky. Over the years, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) have been gaining popularity in the High Performance Computing (HPC) field, because their reconfigurability enables very fine-grained optimizations with low energy cost. However, the different characteristics, architectures, and network topologies of the clusters have hindered the use of FPGAs at a large scale. In this work, we present an evolution of OmpSs@FPGA, a high-level task-based programming model and extension to OmpSs-2, that aims at unifying all FPGA clusters by using a message-passing interface that is compatible with FPGA accelerators. These accelerators are programmed with C/C++ pragmas, and synthesized with High-Level Synthesis tools. The new framework includes a custom protocol to exchange messages between FPGAs, agnostic of the architecture and network type. On top of that, we present a new communication paradigm called Implicit Message Passing (IMP), where the user does not need to call any message-passing API. Instead, the runtime automatically infers data movement between nodes. We test classic message passing and IMP with three benchmarks on two different FPGA clusters. One is cloudFPGA, a disaggregated platform with AMD FPGAs that are only connected to the network through UDP/TCP/IP. The other is ESSPER, composed of CPU-attached Intel FPGAs that have a private network at the ethernet level. In both cases, we demonstrate that IMP with OmpSs@FPGA can increase the productivity of FPGA programmers at a large scale thanks to simplifying communication between nodes, without limiting the scalability of applications. La regulación redox basada en intercambio ditiol-disulfuro es un mecanismo regulatorio en el que la actividad disulfuro reductasa de las tiorredoxinas (TRXs) desempeña un papel central. Los cloroplastos de plantas poseen más de 20 isoformas de TRXs y proteínas TRX-like, que utilizan el poder reductor en forma de ferredoxina reducida (Fdred) fotosintéticamente gracias a la acción de la Fd-TRX reductasa (FTR). Además, los cloroplastos contienen el sistema TRX reductasa dependiente de NADPH, denominado NTRC, que emplea NADPH para reducir proteínas diana del cloroplasto. Se ha demostrado que ambos sistemas, FTR/TRX y NTRC, son esenciales para el funcionamiento correcto de los cloroplastos en respuesta a cambios en la intensidad de la luz. Previamente se ha descrito que NTRC es la principal reguladora de la 2-Cys peroxiredoxina (2-Cys PRX), una peroxidasa tiol-dependiente que reduce el peróxido de hidrógeno hasta agua. El sistema NTRC-2-Cys PRX tiene un papel esencial en el mantenimiento de la homeostasis redox del cloroplasto, manteniendo a sus dianas reducidas y activas durante el día y oxidadas e inactivas en oscuridad. En esta tesis doctoral se han llevado a cabo una serie de aproximaciones genéticas, fisiológicas y bioquímicas, para establecer la contribución de sistemas redox alternativos del cloroplasto, como las glutatión peroxidasas (GPXs) y representantes de la familia de TRXs atípicas ricas en residuos de cisteína e histidina (ACHTs) y TRX-like 2 (TRX L2), a la compleja maquinaria de regulación redox del orgánulo en respuesta a condiciones ambientales como la intensidad lumínica y la oscuridad. Los resultados de este trabajo permiten concluir que las GPXs actúan junto a las 2-Cys PRXs de forma concertada en el control de la homeostasis redox del cloroplasto, si bien las 2-Cys PRXs tienen una contribución más relevante. This article aims to update and renwe the state of the question regarding the behaviors of Chilean diplomacy during the Spanish Civil War. The article highlights the emergence of a bibliography that offers a new perspective on the humanitarian work of Chilean diplomats accredited in Madrid, primarily Aurelio Núñez Morgado and Carlos Mola Lynch, but also others. It argues, in light of newly consulted documentation from Franco's intelligence services, that these diplomatic agents collaborated with supporters of the 1936 coup in various ways, such as clandestinely removing prominent right-wing members from territory controlled by the Republic and allowing the Chilean diplomatic legation to serve as a refuge for spies and espionage. In this regard, the historiographical debate on the subject has been compiled, along with official diplomatic information deposited in the General Historical Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile, the memoirs of the Chilean diplomats, and news collected in the press., En este trabajo se pretende actualizar y renovar el estado de la cuestión sobre los comportamientos de la diplomacia chilena durante la Guerra Civil en España. El artículo pone en valor la aparición de una bibliografía que propone una nueva mirada sobre la labor humanitaria de los diplomáticos chilenos acreditados en Madrid, Aurelio Núñez Morgado y Carlos Morla Lynch principalmente pero también otros, y argumenta, a la luz de la consulta de nueva documentación de los servicios de inteligencia de Franco, que estos agentes diplomáticos colaboraron con los partidos del Golpe de 1936 de diversas formas como, por ejemplo, sacando clandestinamente de territorio controlado por la República a miembros destacados de la derecha y permitiendo que la legación diplomática chilena fuese un lugar de refugio de espías y de espionaje. En este sentido, se ha compilado el debate historiográfico en torno al tema junto con información diplomática oficial depositada en el Archivo General Histórico del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Chile, las memorias de los diplomáticos chilenos y noticias recogidas en la prensa.

La capacidad de poder escribir utilizando única y exclusivamente la ondas cerebrales parece un proyecto utópico fuera del alcance de todos nosotros. Sin embargo, los avances en la neurociencia han desembocado en la creación de interfaces cerebro-ordenador (BCI, brain-computer interfaces) las cuales son capaces de traducir las intenciones de los usua rios y de transformarlas en comandos. Sin embargo, estas señales no se pueden decodificar directamente sin utilizar señales de control. Los potenciales evocados visuales modulados por código (c-VEPs, code-modulated visual evoked potential) son una innovadora señal de control que permite tiempos de calibración reducidos y una excelente precisión. Los sistemas BCI basados en c-VEP se fundamentan en la utilización de secuencias binarias pseudoaleatorias para modular los parpadeos de los comandos seleccionables. Es fundamental que la forma en la que se codifiquen estos comandos, es decir, el conjunto de secuencias binarias pseudoaleatorias utilizadas, exhiban buenas propiedades de auto correlación y/o correlación cruzada. La justificación de codificar los comandos a través de este tipo de secuencias es que, al fijar la atención sobre cada comando, se desencade nen respuestas de electroencefalografía (EEG) que muestren una mayor correlación con el comando al cual el usuario está dirigiendo su atención, en comparación con el resto de estímulos. Uno de los métodos más eficientes para ello es la utilización de versiones des plazadas de una m-secuencia debido a sus excelentes propiedades de autocorrelación. Sin embargo, los Gold Codes han demostrado en varios estudios que, debido a sus magníficas propiedades de correlación cruzada, pueden sustituir a las m-secuencias. Para garantizar un correcto funcionamiento del sistema BCI es fundamental realizar una etapa de extracción de características para encontrar parámetros correlados con las intenciones del usuario en tiempo real. Dynamic Task Scheduling is an enticing programming model aiming to ease the development of parallel programs with intrinsically irregular or data-dependent parallelism. The performance of such solutions relies on the ability of the Task Scheduling HW/SW stack to efficiently evaluate dependencies at runtime and schedule work to available cores. Traditional SW-only systems implicate scheduling overheads of around 30K processor cycles per task, which severely limit the ( core count , task granularity ) combinations that they might adequately handle. Previous work on HW-accelerated Task Scheduling has shown that such systems might support high performance scheduling on processors with up to eight cores, but questions remained regarding the viability of such solutions to support the greater number of cores now frequently found in high-end SMP systems. The present work presents an FPGA-proven, tightly-integrated, Linux-capable, 30-core RISC-V system with hardware accelerated Task Scheduling. We use this implementation to show that HW Task Scheduling can still offer competitive performance at such high core count, and describe how this organization includes hardware and software optimizations that make it even more scalable than previous solutions. The limitations imposed by resource scarcity and the imperative to mitigate adverse environmental and societal impacts have intensified the urgency of developing more sustainable manufacturing systems. Simultaneously, the rapid development and implementation of new technologies is exacerbating the digital divide among vulnerable workers. Concomitantly, the enabling technologies stemming from Industry 4.0 offer significant potential to enhance the competitiveness of manufacturing systems. However, the impact of these enabling technologies on achieving sustainable manufacturing remains uncertain. This paper embarks on a comprehensive exploration to address this knowledge gap. Initially, it assesses the suitability of each enabling technology within Industry 4.0 across the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability. Subsequently, the needs of the production process are studied to characterize its sustainable performance. For this, the ASTM E3012-22 standard is introduced. Building upon this foundation, the incorporation of Industry 5.0 is introduced to guide the selection of enabling technologies for sustainability based on its core values, encompassing sustainability, human-centricity, and resilience. The integration of new technologies guided by these values can help bridge the technological divide among vulnerable workers. Finally, a theoretical framework is proposed to enable the design of sustainable manufacturing systems guided by Industry 5.0 values. This framework enables the seamless integration of enabling technologies, machinery, and human expertise throughout the system life cycle.

Extreme storms can trigger abrupt and often lasting changes in ecosystems by affecting foundational (habitat-forming) species. While the frequency and intensity of extreme events are projected to increase under climate change, its impacts on seagrass ecosystems remain poorly documented. In January 2020, the Spanish Mediterranean coast was hit by Storm Gloria, one of the most devastating recent climate events in terms of intensity and duration. We conducted rapid surveys of 42 Posidonia oceanica meadows across the region to evaluate the extent and type of impact (burial, unburial and uprooting). We investigated the significance of oceanographic (wave impact model), geomorphological (latitude, depth, exposure), and structural (patchiness) factors in predicting impact extent and intensity. The predominant impact of Storm Gloria was shoot unburial. More than half of the surveyed sites revealed recent unburial, with up to 40 cm of sediment removed, affecting over 50 % of the meadow. Burial, although less extensive, was still significant, with 10-80 % of meadow cover being buried under 7 cm of sediment, which is considered a survival threshold for P. oceanica. In addition, we observed evident signs of recently dead matte in some meadows and large amounts of detached drifting shoots on the sea bottom or accumulated as debris on the beaches. Crucially, exposed and patchy meadows were much more vulnerable to the overall impact than sheltered or continuous meadows. Given how slow P. oceanica is able to recover after disturbances, we state that it could take from decades to centuries for it to recoup its losses. Seagrass ecosystems play a vital role as coastal ecological infrastructure. Protecting vulnerable meadows from anthropogenic fragmentation is crucial for ensuring the resilience of these ecosystems in the face of the climate crisis.

Inorganic–inorganic self-organized composite architectures resulting from the chemical coupling of alkaline-earth carbonate and polymeric silica are a promising alternative to organic-based hybrid bio-mimetic systems for developing innovative multi-functional materials. Although the importance of pH in the generation of these structures reminiscent of primitive living organisms (and for this called biomorphs) is widely acknowledged, the effect of pH is generally investigated on the basis of starting pH value. This approach inadvertently neglects the important spatial and temporal pH gradients associated with biomorph nucleation and growth. A deep understanding of the role of pH on morphogenesis requires the ability to detect locally the pH in real-time with a non-invasive technique and correlate pH to the different stages of biomorphic growth. This aim is achieved by combining optical and fluorescence imaging. An accurately selected pH probe suitable for ratiometric pH measurement in the silica gel is exploited during a typical counter-diffusion experiment. The results are compared with computer simulation of the synthesis of biomorphs by counter-diffusion experiments. The results demonstrate the existence of two main morphogenetic regimes. Interestingly, the morphogenetic process controlling the complex shaping of biomorphs results to be independent of the silica speciation.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy rarely occurs in patients with multiple myeloma. Intracranial central nervous system invasion is also an uncommon event in multiple myeloma, occurring in less than 1% of cases. We describe herein an exceptional case of coexisting progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy and intraparenchymal central nervous system myeloma infiltration. A 73-year-old woman with relapsed multiple myeloma was treated with 15 cycles of lenalidomide and dexamethasone, but therapy had to be stopped because of a hip fracture after a fall. During hospitalization, the patient developed progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy caused by John Cunningham virus, and a prominent intra-parenchymal CD138-positive infiltrate was detected. VDJ rearrangements of the immunoglobulin heavy chain gene and the mutational profile of plasma cells in bone marrow at the time of diagnosis and in brain biopsy after progression were analyzed by next generation sequencing, showing genetic differences between medullary and extramedullary myeloma cells. The role of long-term treatment with lenalidomide and dexamethasone in the development progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy or intraparenchymal central nervous system myeloma infiltration remains unknown. However, our results suggest that both events may have arisen as a consequence of treatment-related immunosuppression. Introductory courses on electric circuits at undergraduate level are usually presented in quite abstract terms, with questions and problems quite far from practical problems. This causes the students have difficulties to apply that theory to solve practical technical problems. On the other hand, electric circuits are everywhere in our lives, so we have plenty of real practical problems. Here we compile a selection of practical contexts suited for implementing Problem Based Learning approach in an introductory course on circuit analysis. And some examples describing the gamification process that uses these problems to build single-player role-playing games that fulfil the course contents and scheduling. La adopción de nuevos enfoques productivos por las industrias y la evolución acelerada de la tecnología en este contexto es crucial para mantener la competitividad en los entornos turbulentos y de elevada incertidumbre de los mercados en los que se desenvuelven. Las nuevas propuestas de paradigmas que orientan la evolución de las empresas para la adopción de las nuevas tecnologías, como la Industria 5.0, presentan retos y oportunidades en el ámbito de la seguridad y salud laboral que es necesario identificar para mejorar las condiciones de trabajo y la sostenibilidad social de las empresas. En el presente trabajo se exponen brevemente las últimas aportaciones en relación con la Industria 5.0, y se realiza un análisis de sus implicaciones en materia de seguridad y salud en el trabajo a partir de un estudio mediante un modelo de ecuaciones estructurales. Como principal conclusión se destacará que la principal aportación que de momento hacen estas nuevas tecnologías a la seguridad y salud en el trabajo es para la evaluación de riesgos laborales., The adoption of new productive approaches by industries and the accelerated evolution of technology in this context is crucial to maintain competitiveness in the turbulent and highly uncertain environments of the markets in which they operate. The new paradigm proposals that guide the evolution of companies for the adoption of new technologies, such as Industry 5.0, present challenges and opportunities in the field of occupational health and safety that need to be identified to improve working conditions and social sustainability of companies. This paper briefly presents the latest contributions regarding Industry 5.0, and analyses its implications for occupational health and safety based on a study using a structural equation model.

Actualmente se dispone de poca información técnica de carácter formativo en español para el ámbito de la ingeniería industrial relativa al transporte continuo de mercancías. De esta necesidad, surge este libro que recoge tanto la descripción de diferentes sistemas de transporte continuo de mercancías (a granel y en forma de carga unitaria variada) en instalaciones industriales, como la introducción de los conceptos básicos necesarios que permiten el diseño y cálculo de este tipo de equipamientos de manutención. Su contenido puede ser utilizado como material técnico y divulgativo de consulta. Se ha estructurado en capítulos que pueden ser leídos y revisados de forma independiente y se ha tratado de mostrar la información con el necesario rigor técnico que exige la descripción de sistemas, diseños y soluciones constructivas en las diferentes instalaciones industriales de transporte continuo de mercancías, pero sin abandonar el carácter divulgativo y gráfico, para lo cual se han incluido numerosas imágenes y ejemplos representativos. The ever-increasing yields in genome sequence data production pose a computational challenge to current genome sequence analysis tools, jeopardizing the future of personalized medicine. Leveraging hardware accelerators (GPUs, FPGAs, and ASICs) to accelerate computationally-intensive algorithms like sequence alignment has become paramount. Recently, the wavefront alignment algorithm was introduced, significantly reducing the execution time to perform sequence alignment. This paper presents the first-ever ASIC accelerator of the WFA integrated into a RISC-V system-on-chip. El presente trabajo fin de máster, consiste en el diseño instruccional y didáctico de la Unidad de Trabajo “Accionamiento de motores. Aplicación en cinta transportadora” que se encuadra dentro del módulo profesional “Automatismo Industrial” dentro del título de Técnico en Instalaciones Eléctricas y Automáticas. Para ello, se ha partido de los aspectos genéricos de la Unidad de Trabajo como su fundamentación teórica a partir de la cual se define tanto su diseño instruccional como su diseño técnico. Posteriormente se ha concretado en el diseño didáctico de la Unidad de Trabajo para, finalmente, realizar una propuesta de mejora mediante la aplicación del sistema de calidad “Diagrama causa – efecto”., This master's thesis consists of the instructional and didactic design of the Work Unit "Design and start-up of a conveyor belt using two motors" which falls within the professional module "Industrial Automation" within the title of Installation Technician Electric and Automatic. For this, it has been based on the generic aspects of the Work Unit as its theoretical foundation from which both its instructional design and its technical design are defined. Plants are subjected to changes in light conditions, so they have a mechanism for redox regulation of photosynthetic enzymes that allows them to acclimate to different light intensity situations. The redox regulation is mainly based on the activation (reduction) of photosynthetic enzymes during the day and their inactivation (oxidation) at night. This study focuses on analyzing the mechanism of oxidative redox regulation and the role of an atypical thioredoxin (TRX) called Cdsp32 (chloroplastic drought-induced stress protein of 32 kDa), whose function is still unknown. It is thought that Cdsp32 may act together with atypical TRXs to activate 2- Cysteine-Peroxiredoxin (2cp), which allows the detoxification of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to water (H2O). Furthermore, a protein called NADPH TRX reductase C (NTRC) may control the activity of Cdsp32. Therefore, from previous articles, it is understood that Cdsp32 reduces and activates the 2cp protein. In addition, it is known that NTRC also reduces the 2cp. However, the function of Cdsp32 in the oxidative redox regulation and its functional relationship with 2cp and NTRC are still unknown. By confocal microscopy, it was observed that Cdsp32 is localized in the chloroplasts of mesophyll cells, and co-localized with 2cp. The levels and redox status of Cdsp32 in Arabidopsis thaliana wild-type, 2cpab and ntrc were studied by Western Blot. It was observed that 2cp and NTRC may be functionally related with Cdsp32, as the lack of these proteins is balanced by a higher amount of Cdsp32. Moreover, in mutants deficient of 2cp or NTRC, Cdsp32 is reduced in light and dark conditions, so the redox status of Cdsp32 does not change in the light-to-dark transition. The present research article is the product of the conjunction of the desire to comprehend and acquire knowledge, the will to explore and aid, driven by the inherent fieldwork of the anthropological discipline. Through extensive journeys and encounters with the T'simane and Esse Ejja communities in the Beni and La Paz departments, respectively. The primary purpose of this research focused on analyzing the impact of territorial dispossession and contamination, which has profoundly affected the lives of these communities in Bolivia. The loss of their ancestral territories leads to the disappearance of historical memory and cultural practices associated with significant places. Through a critical-hermeneutic approach and extensive anthropological fieldwork in both communities, we explored the socio-cultural phenomena affected by this issue. Furthermore, based on the findings, we propose development projects and educational alternatives that will integrate the anthropological perspective as an integral part of the strategy to recover the memory of these places and revitalize the daily life of these communities., El presente artículo de investigación es el fruto de la conjunción del deseo de comprender y conocer, la voluntad de explorar y ayudar, impulsado por el trabajo de campo inherente a la disciplina antropológica. A lo largo de extensos viajes y encuentros con las comunidades T’simane y Esse Ejja en los departamentos de Beni y La Paz, respectivamente. El propósito fundamental de esta investigación se centró en el análisis del impacto del despojo territorial y la contaminación, que ha afectado profundamente la vida de estas comunidades en Bolivia. La pérdida de sus territorios ancestrales conlleva a la desaparición de la memoria histórica y prácticas culturales asociadas a lugares de gran significado. A través de un enfoque crítico-hermenéutico y su exhaustivo trabajo de campo antropológico en ambas comunidades exploramos los fenómenos socioculturales que han sido afectados por esta problemática. Además, de proponer a través de los resultados, proyectos de desarrollo y alternativas formativas que incorporarán la perspectiva antropológica como parte integral de la estrategia de recuperar la memoria de los lugares y revitalizar la vida cotidiana de estas comunidades.

This research article focuses on the promotion and development of inclusion in the educational environment in higher education, considering it a fundamental right that is established in the Political Constitution of the State. The central objective is to examine the concept of inclusion from a human rights-based perspective. Inclusion is closely linked to social justice and equity. Higher Education institutions, that is, universities, must adapt their admission procedures, academic support, pedagogical methodologies and graduation with the student as the subject holder of rights, which implies the need to modify practices that may generate discriminatory situations. Inclusive higher education is a notion that seeks to ensure that all students have the opportunity to access, remain and complete their studies, regardless of their individual characteristics or personal circumstances. This approach is based on the principles of social justice, which advocate equity and equal opportunities for all. This article presents various strategies aimed at promoting inclusion in higher education. These strategies focus on the following aspects: Access: Eliminate barriers that obstruct entry to higher education, such as economic, social or cultural barriers. Permanence: Provide support to students so that they can continue their studies in higher education and complete them successfully. Graduation: Ensure that students who graduate from higher education acquire the competencies and skills necessary to integrate into the labor market., Este artículo de investigación se enfoca en la promoción y desarrollo de la inclusión en el entorno educativo de la educación superior, considerándola un derecho fundamental que está establecido en la Constitución Política del Estado. 2023 Descuento MDPI, For a long time, Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) were not considered a component in the etiology of dementia. The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders introduced substance-induced neurocognitive disorders, incorporating this notion to clinical practice. However, detection and monitoring of neurodegenerative processes in SUD patients remain a major clinical challenge, especially when early diagnosis is required. In the present study, we aimed to investigate new potential biomarkers of neurodegeneration that could predict cognitive impairment in SUD patients: the circulating concentrations of Neurofilament Light chain protein (NfL) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). Sixty SUD patients were compared with twenty-seven dementia patients and forty healthy controls. SUD patients were recruited and assessed using the Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental (PRISM) and a battery of neuropsychological tests, including the Montreal Cognitive Assessment test for evaluation of cognitive impairment. When compared to healthy control subjects, SUD patients showed increases in plasma NfL concentrations and NfL/BDNF ratio, as well as reduced plasma BDNF levels. These changes were remarkable in SUD patients with moderate–severe cognitive impairment, being comparable to those observed in dementia patients. NfL concentrations correlated with executive function and memory cognition in SUD patients. The parameters “age”, “NfL/BDNF ratio”, “first time alcohol use”, “age of onset of alcohol use disorder”, and “length of alcohol use disorder diagnosis” were able to stratify our SUD sample into patients with cognitive impairment from those without cognitive dysfunction with great specificity and sensibility. La regulación redox de proteínas del cloroplasto es un proceso esencial y necesario para el correcto desarrollo y crecimiento de las plantas. En este trabajo se ha utilizado la planta modelo Arabidopsis thaliana para estudiar el papel que desempeña la proteína ACHT3, una tiorredoxina atípica, en el control redox de enzimas cloroplastídicas relacionadas con la fotosíntesis. Para ello, se han utilizado líneas mutantes deficientes en ACHT3 y líneas transgénicas que sobreexpresan esta proteína. Para llevar a cabo este estudio, se han realizado análisis por western blot, genotipados por PCR y mediciones a través del fluorímetro IMAGING-PAM. Los resultados muestran que alteraciones en los niveles de la proteína ACHT3 no afectan al crecimiento y desarrollo de las plantas; no obstante, ACHT3 participa en la oxidación de determinadas enzimas metabólicas como la rubisco activasa y la fructosa-1,6-bifosfatasa. Es por ello que ACHT3 puede considerarse diana de ciertas enzimas cloroplastídicas, aunque su ausencia en plantas no tiene ningún efecto sobre estas, sugiriéndose la probabilidad de la existencia de otras tiorredoxinas atípicas redundantes en el cloroplasto.

Recent technological breakthroughs have allowed modern epidemiologists to raise increasingly ambitious research hypotheses. This has originated vast amounts of data, which in turn has lead to an explosion of new statistical methodology. In this thesis we present four papers on the analysis of complex epidemiology data. In paper 1 we study the utiliy and validity of two computerized tests for the quantification of Working Memory and Attention. We use Bayesian Networks to learn about the structure of interdependencies between a set of variables comprising sociodemographic and neurodevelopmental proxies. The results show that both tests have good psychometric properties and allow us to have a better understanding of the underlying structure of the data, which can then be incorportated into posterior analyses. Papers 2 and 3 deal with the study of small magnitude effects of environmental pollutants on the neurodevelopment of prepuber children. In paper 2 we study the impact on neurodevelopment of several pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide or ultrafine particles. Our results suggest that these pollutants are potentially harmful for the neurodevelopment. In paper 3 we explore in detail the role of one of these pollutants (particulate matter 2.5 or PM2.5). We use nonnegative matrix factorization to conduct a source apportionment to estimate the levels of the different components present in PM2.5. In both papers we apply mixed effects models with several nested random effects to account for the hierarchical and correlated nature of the data. Finally, in paper 4 we present our own method for the analysis of RNA-Seq data and, more specifically, for the detection of differentially expressed genes across two or more conditions. We first use real data examples to show why the previously existing methods based on Poisson and Negative Binomial distributions are not able to capture the real distribution of, (Español) La epidemiología es una ciencia relativamente joven pero en constante evolución. Los enormes avances tecnológicos de las últimas décadas han permitido a los epidemiólogos modernos plantearse preguntas científicas cada vez más ambiciosas. Esto ha originado grandes cantidades de datos, lo que a su vez ha llevado a una explosión de nueva metodología estadística. En esta tesis presentamos cuatro artículos que tratan sobre el análisis de datos epidemológicos complejos. En el primer artículo estudiamos la utilidad y validez de dos tests computerizados para cuantificar la Memoria de Trabajo y la Atención. Para ello nos servimos de Redes Bayesianas para inferir la estructura subyacente de interdependencias entre un conjunto de variables que comprenden proxies sociodemográficos y de desarrollo neurológico. Los resultados demuestran que ambos tests tienen buenas propiedades psicométricas y permiten obtener una mejor comprensión de la estructura subyacente de los datos. Los artículos 2 y 3 tratan sobre el estudio de efectos de pequeña magnitud de contaminantes ambientales en el neurodesarrollo de niños y niñas prepúber. En el artículo 2 estudiamos el impacto sobre el neurodesarrollo de diversos contaminantes como por ejemplo el dióxido de nitrógeno o las partículas ultrafinas. Nuestros resultados apuntan a que algunos de estos contaminantes son potencialmente perniciosos para el desarrollo neurológico. En el artículo 3 exploramos más detalladamente el rol de uno de estos contaminantes (la materia particulada 2.5 o PM2.5). Para ello nos valemos de la factorización no negativa de matrices para estimar las fuentes de los diferentes componentes hallados en PM2.5. Tanto en el artículo 2 como en el artículo 3 aplicamos modelos de efectos mixtos con varios efectos aleatorios anidados para tener en cuenta la naturaleza jerárquica y correlacionada de los datos. Introduction: The aim of this prospective descriptive study was to analyse the possible vari ables associated with marginal bone loss in rehabilitated implants (Proclinic S.A.U, Zaragoza, Spain) two years after their prosthetic loading. Materials and Methods: Three clinical centres collaborated for a period of two years after the prosthetic rehabilitation of the implants (Proclinic S.A.U, Zaragoza, Spain), in which marginal bone loss and the possible associated variables were evaluated. The collection form comprised different variables throughout different stages of the implant procedure, from implant insertion to the subsequent prosthetic rehabilitation, over a two-year period. Data of the patients and implant characteristics were studied. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS for qualitative (univariate logistic regressions, Chi2 test, and Haberman’s corrected standardised residuals) and quantitative variables (Kolmogorov–Smirnov test). Results: The total study sample consisted of 218 implants (Proclinic S.A.U, Zaragoza, Spain). The sample presented a frequency of 99 men (45.4%) and 119 women (54.6%). The mean age of the patients among the reported cases was 58.56 ± 10.12 years. The development of industrial manufacturing systems has significant implications for society and the environment, often resulting in substantial waste generation. To address this issue and promote sustainable growth, the concept of industrial metabolism offers a promising approach. Industrial metabolism facilitates the circularity of energy and material flows within the industrial environment, contributing to the establishment of more sustainable manufacturing systems. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of industrial metabolism, highlighting its analogy with natural systems and categorizing models based on their application at different levels: macro (national or regional), meso (eco-industrial park), and micro (manufacturing plant or line). The analysis emphasizes the importance of considering the trophic network and evaluating the efficiency, cyclicality, toxicity, and resilience of industrial metabolic pathways. The proposed characterization of bioinspired industrial metabolism is positioned within the industrial environment. This positioning facilitates the design of manufacturing systems that emphasize circularity, drawing on frameworks applied at different levels within industrial metabolism.

The redox couple formed by NADPH-dependent thioredoxin reductase C (NTRC) and 2-Cys peroxiredoxins (Prxs) allows fine-tuning chloroplast performance in response to light intensity changes. Accordingly, the Arabidopsis 2cpab mutant lacking 2-Cys Prxs shows growth inhibition and sensitivity to light stress. However, this mutant also shows defective post-germinative growth, suggesting a relevant role of plastid redox systems in seed development, which is so far unknown. To address this issue, we first analyzed the pattern of expression of NTRC and 2-Cys Prxs in developing seeds. Transgenic lines expressing GFP fusions of these proteins showed their expression in developing embryos, which was low at the globular stage and increased at heart and torpedo stages, coincident with embryo chloroplast differentiation, and confirmed the plastid localization of these enzymes. The 2cpab mutant produced white and abortive seeds, which contained lower and altered composition of fatty acids, thus showing the relevance of 2-Cys Prxs in embryogenesis. Most embryos of white and abortive seeds of the 2cpab mutant were arrested at heart and torpedo stages of embryogenesis suggesting an essential function of 2-Cys Prxs in embryo chloroplast differentiation. This phenotype was not recovered by a mutant version of 2-Cys Prx A replacing the peroxidatic Cys by Ser. Neither the lack nor the overexpression of NTRC had any effect on seed development indicating that the function of 2-Cys Prxs at these early stages of development is independent of NTRC, in clear contrast with the operation of these regulatory redox systems in leaves chloroplasts.

El artículo analiza el modo en que en la novela Florencio Conde. Escenas de la vida colombiana (1875) de José María Samper, se ensaya una imagen del esclavo liberto en el periodo post-Independencia neogranadino; primero como sujeto económico, que ejercita su individualidad y ciudadanía bajo el influjo de una organización republicana, donde se pondera el librecambismo, y después como «amante racializado», al que le es sustraída nuevamente la libertad, sobre cuya corporeidad se restaura el régimen esclavista y se reconstruye el deseo del amo. Se analiza la tentativa estética de construir en el personaje Segundo Conde un carácter de ciudadano racionalista, aunque de índole dócil y discreta, que sirva de afortunado ejemplo de mestizaje, en el marco de la fundación de la nación y de una nueva estructura de relaciones de producción, metamorfoseadas por la lógica individualista de la ganancia y la acumulación de capital. Hay un énfasis en la composición de cuadros, delicadamente dibujados, escrupulosamente eróticos, en los que se verifica el encuentro del hombre negro y la mujer blanca, suponiendo esto una variable, sino transgresiva para la época, por lo menos inusual; de ahí que en la novela también se moldea ágilmente la imagen de un sujeto afectivo, capaz de amar a pesar de negro, en un contexto en el que la idea de la inferioridad racial y moral podía conjurarse solo por medio del futuro blanquimiento, o de la generosa promesa que viene implícita tras la aprobación social del desigual romance. In Scenes from Colombian life (1875) an image of the freed slave in the post-independence period of New Granada is rehearsed; first as an economic subject, who exercises his individuality and citizenship under the influence of a republican organisation, where free trade is pondered, and then as a «racialised lover», from whom freedom is taken away again and on whose body the slave regime is restored, as well as the master’s desire is reconstructed. The aesthetic attempt to build a character of rationalist citizen in Segundo Conde, although of a docile and discreet nature, is analysed, which serves as a lucky example of miscegenation, within the framework of the foundation of the nation and of a new structure of relations of production, metamorphosed by the individualistic logic of profit and capital accumulation. There is an emphasis on the composition of frames, delicately drawn, scrupulously erotic, in which the meeting of the black man and the white woman is verified, assuming this to be a variable, if not transgressive for the time, at least unusual. Hence, in the novel the image of an affective subject, capable of loving despite being black, is also nimbly molded, in a context in which the idea of racial and moral inferiority could be conjured only through future whitening, or the generous promise that comes implicit behind the social approval of the unequal romance. As a whole, the analysis confirms the thesis that Florencio Conde. Scenes from Colombian life corresponds to that type of artifact novel through which, based on an evolutionary ideological pattern, but with remnants of the past, the 19th century Hispano-American literate elites took the first steps towards a national literary tradition, which refract the fortunate convergence of races, cultures and social classes.

Apoptosis is a form of regulated cell death (RCD) that involves proteases of the caspase family. Pharmacological and genetic strategies that experimentally inhibit or delay apoptosis in mammalian systems have elucidated the key contribution of this process not only to (post-)embryonic development and adult tissue homeostasis, but also to the etiology of multiple human disorders. Consistent with this notion, while defects in the molecular machinery for apoptotic cell death impair organismal development and promote oncogenesis, the unwarranted activation of apoptosis promotes cell loss and tissue damage in the context of various neurological, cardiovascular, renal, hepatic, infectious, neoplastic and inflammatory conditions. Here, the Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death (NCCD) gathered to critically summarize an abundant pre-clinical literature mechanistically linking the core apoptotic apparatus to organismal homeostasis in the context of disease.

The regeneration of tissues from wounds of different kinds such as burns, continues today to be a topic of interest and growing research when it is determined that the time it takes is essential for the health and life of the patient. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of Persea caerulea as an alternative for wound regeneration, using Girardia festae as a biological model study under laboratory conditions. Both, the plant specie and the model flatworm were collected and taxonomically identified. Extracts of P. caerulea were prepared at 0.4%, 0.2%, 0.1% and 0% and following an experimental design of completely randomized blocks, we proceeded to evaluate its effect on seven types of fragments of G. festae, including a population of 280 fragments. The results obtained show promise to continue studies in models closer to human tissues. The 0.4% concentration of P. caerulea significantly reduced the blastema formation time to 9.6 minutes in the head fragment and its conformation to a complete individual at 131.6 hours., La regeneración de tejidos frente a heridas de diferente índole como quemaduras, continúa siendo hoy en día un tema de interés y creciente investigación al determinarse que el tiempo que demanda es esencial para la salud y vida del paciente. El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar el uso de Persea caerulea como una alternativa para la regeneración de heridas, empleando como modelo biológico Girardia festae bajo condiciones de laboratorio. Se colectó y determinó taxonómicamente tanto la especie vegetal como al platelminto modelo; se prepararon extractos al 0,4%; 0,2%; 0,1% y 0% de P. caerulea y siguiendo un diseño experimental en bloques totalmente aleatorizados se procedió a evaluar su efecto en siete tipos de fragmentos de G. festae, incluyendo una población de 280 fragmentos. Los resultados obtenidos se muestran promisorios para continuar estudios en modelos más cercanos a los tejidos humanos. La concentración de 0,4% de P. caerulea redujo significativamente el tiempo de formación de blastema a 9,6 minutos en el fragmento cefálico y a 131,6 horas su conformación a individuo completo.

This paper delves into the concept of social metabolism as a foundation for the development of sociotechnical systems in Industry 5.0. The study conducts an analysis of the existing methods and approaches for designing sociotechnical systems, and reviews publications that utilize such systems to incorporate Industry 4.0 technologies into manufacturing processes. Additionally, it examines the three key factors of Industry 5.0 and the enabling framework of Industry 4.0 technologies. Based on these investigations, a theoretical model is proposed for manufacturing system design, employing sociotechnical systems to integrate Industry 4.0 enabling technologies, while considering the essential aspects of Industry 5.0. The model emphasizes the early consideration of sociotechnical systems to design manufacturing systems that prioritize human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. By embracing this comprehensive approach, the proposed model contributes to the realization of a production environment aligned with societal needs, fostering a more conscious and adaptable industry.

Extreme storms can trigger abrupt and often lasting changes in ecosystems by affecting foundational (habitat-forming) species. While the frequency and intensity of extreme events are projected to increase under climate change, its impacts on seagrass ecosystems remain poorly documented. In January 2020, the Spanish Mediterranean coast was hit by Storm Gloria, one of the most devastating recent climate events in terms of intensity and duration. We conducted rapid surveys of 42 Posidonia oceanica meadows across the region to evaluate the extent and type of impact (burial, unburial and uprooting). We investigated the significance of oceanographic (wave impact model), geomorphological (latitude, depth, exposure), and structural (patchiness) factors in predicting impact extent and intensity. The predominant impact of Storm Gloria was shoot unburial. More than half of the surveyed sites revealed recent unburial, with up to 40 cm of sediment removed, affecting over 50 % of the meadow. Burial, although less extensive, was still significant, with 10–80 % of meadow cover being buried under 7 cm of sediment, which is considered a survival threshold for P. oceanica. In addition, we observed evident signs of recently dead matte in some meadows and large amounts of detached drifting shoots on the sea bottom or accumulated as debris on the beaches. Crucially, exposed and patchy meadows were much more vulnerable to the overall impact than sheltered or continuous meadows. Given how slow P. oceanica is able to recover after disturbances, we state that it could take from decades to centuries for it to recoup its losses. Seagrass ecosystems play a vital role as coastal ecological infrastructure. Protecting vulnerable meadows from anthropogenic fragmentation is crucial for ensuring the resilience of these ecosystems in the face of the climate crisis.

The Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework 67 (ZIF-67) is a highly promising material owing to its exceptional thermal stability, large specific surface area, cost-effectiveness, and versatile applications. One of the potential applications of ZIF-67 is gas separation processes, among which the separation of CO2/CH4 mixtures has attracted great interest nowadays in the biogas sector. However, when it comes to CO2/CH4 separation, ZIF-67 falls short as it lacks the desired selectivity despite its high adsorption capacity. This limitation arises from its relatively low affinity towards CO2. In this study, we have addressed this issue by partially exchanging the ligand of ZIF-67, specifically replacing 2-methylimidazole with 1,2,4 (1H) triazole, which introduces an additional nitrogen atom. This modification resulted in ZIF-67 showing significantly enhanced affinity towards CO2 and, as a result, greater selectivity towards CO2 over CH4. The modified materials underwent thorough characterization using various techniques, and their adsorption capacity was evaluated through high-pressure adsorption isotherms. Furthermore, their separation performance was assessed using the Ideal Solution Adsorption Theory, which provided valuable insights into their potential for efficient gas separation.

La dislexia es el trastorno del uso escrito del lenguaje debido a la debilidad visoespacial en la percepción de las formas lingüísticas. En este trabajo, se postula que una posible caracterización funcional de los déficits de la naturaleza lingüística en hablantes pacientes que presentan dislexia cuando no se presupone todavía una total adquisición de la lectura y la escritura va a favorecer tanto el diagnóstico como la propuesta de intervención. Para demostrar esta hipótesis, estudiamos el caso de dos hablantes pacientes gemelos que comparten el diagnóstico de dislexia con el objetivo de comprobar el carácter genético-hereditario de la patología y proponer terapias específicas a partir del análisis funcional lingüístico. Así, presentamos el marco teórico que permite el conocimiento histórico y las definiciones ofrecidas sobre este trastorno, las dificultades que entraña su etiología y los diferentes modelos de intervención que existen actualmente para paliarlo. A continuación, realizamos el estudio de caso de los dos sujetos emparentados, comprobando, a partir de los resultados del estudio, que ambos hermanos sufren un retraso lector moderado con problemas de inversión y rotación y una escritura con problemas de inversión, rotación y disgrafía. El nivel de dislexia, aunque es similar, no es idéntico, lo que sugiere propuestas de intervención diferentes., Dyslexia is a disorder in the written use of language due to visuospatial weakness in the perception of linguistic forms. This paper postulates that a possible functional characterization of the deficits of a linguistic nature in patient speakers who present dyslexia when a full acquisition of reading and writing is not yet assumed will favor both the diagnosis and the intervention proposal. To demonstrate this hypothesis, we study the case of two twin patient-speakers who share the diagnosis of dyslexia, with the aim of checking the genetic-hereditary nature of the pathology and proposing specific therapies based on linguistic functional analysis. We thus present the theoretical framework that allows the historical knowledge and definitions offered on this disorder, the difficulties involved in its etiology, and the different models of intervention that currently exist to alleviate it. Then we then carry out a case study of the two related subjects, verifying, from the results of the study, that both siblings suffer a moderate reading delay with inversion and rotation problems, and a writing with problems also of inversion, rotation and dysgraphia. El objetivo de nuestra investigación consiste en la comprobación de los procesos lingüísticos inferenciales que están detrás del fenómeno del humor negro o de mal gusto en la población infantil. Para ello, partiendo de los resultados obtenidos en el Proyecto “Metapragmática del humor infantil: adquisición, perspectiva de género y aplicaciones” (GRE 14-19, Universidad de Alicante), vamos a observar las manifestaciones lingüísticas que emplea la población infantil para expresar el humor negro o de mal gusto. Y nos vamos a centrar en este trabajo en el análisis de los campos del léxico escatológico, como expresión de este humor negro o de mal gusto, empleado por los niños y niñas de edad comprendida entre los 8 y los 12 años., This study explores the inferential linguistic processes which underlie the phenomenon of black humour –or humour in bad taste– in a population of children. To this end, and based on the findings of the Project “Metapragmática del humor infantil: adquisición, perspectiva de género y aplicaciones” (Metapragmatics of children’s humour: acquisition, gender perspective and applications) (GRE 14-19, University of Alicante), we will focus on the linguistic devices used by children aged between 8 and 12 years to express black humour in their language production, looking specifically at the use of the scatological lexicon in this context.
